I largely agree with Fantano's take on this album. Great riffs, interesting poetry, all wasted on poor composition and arrangement. There was honestly a lot of potential here and if they'd spent a lot more time working on Lou's poetry to make it compatible with the music, this would've been a legitimately great album. I often listen to (and yeah, enjoy) Dragon, The View, Cheat On Me, Junior Dad and Pumping Blood. I think they have some of the best riffs James has written in decades. 1:17:50 is one of my favourite riffs ever, shame it wasn't used on a better structured song.
Metallica did this for Lou reed b/c Lou already knew he was dying. Both 'talica and Lou were huge fans of each other, Lou asked them to do this so they did as a kinda farewell to Lou reed. I always loved a lot of the riffs but the lyrics are just verbal vomit. Never could get past 'em. I respect the effort and reason just not the final product as a whole b/c of the vocals.

1:42:00 - That has to be the Grynch. If we consider this an official Metallica song, this is the second lowest tuning Metallica has ever used. They are... KORNTALLICA!!
"The View" is in D standard. It should have been in dropped C (like most of St. Anger), so they wouldn't have to move up a string for the C power chord. I think that has my two favorite riffs on the album. The entire album.
FRUSTRATION, DRAGON and JUNIOR DAD are my MOST FAVOURITE SONGS!!! I especially enjoy JUNIOR DAD (the only song with REAL VOCALS on which James Hetfield plays solos). This was last Lou Reed's album EVER
I actually liked this album… I wish instead of taking the piss out of every song and talking over every meaningful lyric youse actually listened and thought deeply about what’s being said
I was right to be scared because the listening experience, while definitely one of a kind, was so WEIRD! Lou Reed's "voiceover" was atrocious; he seemed like one of those babbling drunks you might find outside a train station, and he didn't get a note right, which made everything even worse. Same goes with James but I don't really care that much because he only did some backup vocals. What I liked about this album was only the instrumental background, which is unmistakably Metallica, and I just like how they play (I thought they weren't the best choice too, though.), and the songs Pumping Blood and Junior Dad. Especially the first because of the connection to Jack "The Ripper" and because that's where we understand what the heck is the deal with Lulu as a character. She's messed up big time and in this song (and in Frustration) it's really highlighted. Instead I liked Junior Dad because there's finally some melody in the vocals and the lyrics are not pure cussing and disgusting images. It's too long however. I could've done with at least 5 minutes less of that instrumental part. Overall some lyrics were really TOO over the top and I'm not one to make much of a fuss over "taboo" topics. Some lyrics were especially disgusting and confusing and I want to erase them from my memory. They depicted clearly the tragedy that is this character, but also end up making this record a tragedy. I didn't like it, the chances of me listening again are very close to zero, but I also get why some people might like it, conceptually speaking. Definitely not my cup of tea, but I expected worse so I'm just happy that I got through it without falling asleep or closing the video. I don't consider it as canon Metallica record to me and it has to be taken for what it is. A weird thing.
