That pre-chorus riff is badass though. It caught me off-guard as I wasn't expecting anything that heavy from them in this song. The echo on his voice somehow makes it sound good too, as he utters the line "permanently midnight!".
i love this part so much. i really do think it captures how trapped the narrator feels. i think all of the riff changes symbolize a real human experience.
Hey Bryce, I just came across your channel while surfing the net for some new Metallica content. Honestly speaking, I was looking for a channel that would give me good insights into Metallica's latest song, and that's exactly what I found. So far I binged a few of your videos. Your production quality and editing are on point. Moreover, the person you come across is very genuine and knowledgeable. Just felt like I had to let you know how I felt. Looking forward to seeing more of your content! Cheers!
This comment is an absolute day-maker! Thanks for being here. People like you are the reason I make this stuff, so I’m glad we found each other. I hope you’ll find lots to enjoy here, even in the not-Metallica stuff. What did you think of this song? Did you learn anything new from the video?
@@MidnightNotion I'm really glad I could make your day Bryce! I'll surely check out the non-Metallica stuff. About the song, my favourite part was the chorus. It's a killer riff. Also, on the contrary, I enjoyed the pre-chorus riff. The riff is very groove metal-esque, and I'm a sucker for groove metal. Also, the harmony part in the solo took me back to the old times when Metallica would use a lot of harmonies quite literally everywhere. The intro built up just the right about of anticipation and tension. My only gripe would be the main riff. It sounded quite uninspired to me. I did learn a thing or two from watching your videos. I usually analyse songs from their riffs and song structure and never really pay attention to the time signatures at play. But after watching your video, one realizes when said song goes into half-time, on which beat does the snare land, etc. Sorry for the late response, was quite busy. Anyways, looking forward to seeing more of your content!
i like his channel too, He's got kool energy and of course , that he knows his shit... METALLICA , has a New album out ! I just can't believe it ,that's fucking awesome , I love that the haters are gonna hate, just lame mofos that will go out of their way to go see some BTS or Rap shit, I would like to see how long they'll last not even a half hour, our METALLICA has been around for 42 years and counting . Just enjoying the fact that \m/etal , it's still alive and growing eternally... I kinda lost my point , there were no rules , it's only thrash metal's finest Band jammin' some new stuff , enjoy it ...
Also... The prechorus instantly hooked me in!!! i'm not sure why people aren't into it. to me, it seals the narrative in. To me, the verse is the root of the internal experience, the prechorus is the experience itself, and the chorus is the root of the external experience. It's phenomenal songwriting, if you ask me. Hetfield can write these gems in his sleep. i love how he is opening himself up to share his process of healing from trauma in a way that to me is much more mature and vulnerable, in a loving way. It resonates with me in a major way. He has come so far.... to play on one of your songs (wink).
@@sneezemachine Thank you so much! Despite playing music myself (and even covering their music sometimes), in a lot of ways i tend to focus more on the experience and connectivity of something, versus how it sounds, when it comes to Metallica. i think the songs i've heard from '72 Seasons' so far capture very real human experiences in much more healthily vulnerable ways than past albums. i also love how Rob is being highlighted in these songs, and i actually do love Kirk's 'joyful abandoned' approach to his playing. i love Lars' (who is my greatest musical inspiration at this stage in my life) 'less is more' approach to his playing. i love that James is asking real existential questions. And even with the bridge and solo of the song- some call it the middle 8; to me, it is similar to 'Puppets' in that it captures the narrator in a particular physical or emotional trajectory, which is elation, or busting out of the drudgery of life. You can call it being high... on drugs, life itself- whatever you imagine it to be. The third verse brings you back down to that drudgery and harsh reality. The chorus sounds very cathartic. '72 Seasons' is an immensely well-crafted song. To me, it really IS up there with 'Puppets' and 'One', in terms of its skill in capturing, again, a particular human experience: 'One' captures someone who is experiencing immense pain (and lonliness and ideation) as a result of an injury/quadruple amputation plus (as an amputee i relate heavily to this song); 'Puppets' succinctly captures someone in the midst of addiction, and the highs and lows which ensue. The songs from 72 Seasons capture a range of experiences based on the desire for human connection and self-reflection. But the title track perfectly describes someone who is trapped by childhood trauma and desires to escape that, but doesn't necessarily have effective tools in which to do it. Despite being into this band for getting close to a majority of my existence on this earth, it wasn't until now where i realized how much i actually truly do love this band. Be well...

I think I agree with all of your opinions on this song, with the exception that I think the pre-chorus is fantastic. On another note, is it just me or does the beginning of this song sound like that surf rock guitar song "Miserlou" by Dick Dale (the Pulp Fiction song) - it took me a really long time to find the name of that song. The only information I had when searching for it online was the guitar melody in my head "ding di gui di ding"... I'm always expecting half-time drums and a tambourine to come in when I hear the intro to "72 Seasons".
What did you think of Kirks solo? I thought it was nothing super outstanding but more coherent than the others so far. I liked the melodic and harmonised lines added to it and not just fast arps. I'm not a big fan of the prechorus either but it seems to have earworm qualities after a few days and a few listens.
Honestly, Kirk’s solos have been in one ear, out the other since DM. I’m no longer impressed by fast playing, and there hasn’t been a real stand-out melodic solo since Halo on Fire. At this point, the bass and rhythm parts are more intriguing to me than any solo.
To me, this song lands somewhere around ManUnkind and Murder One: I wouldn't necessarily listen to it in my spare time, but if it was on, I definitely wouldn't skip it. So I guess that makes it... not great, not terrible - just good. However, I do love the ridiculous amount of references to their previous albums. There's probably at least 7-8 different songs mixed in one long song, it's almost like a Metallica medley in a way. So if all these references were put in there deliberately and not because of their lack of imagination, that's a big win - it's not easy to incorporate so much familiar material into a song and still make it sound somewhat new and fresh. As for the new review structure, I think it's cool for the viewers since we get both the sincere reaction and the analysis, so I love it. But I understand that it's probably a ton of extra work, so if you decide to go back to the old format I won't judge ya :)
This is the second best of the four singles, best being Lux Æterna. This song sounds similar to That Was Just Your Life, with a long, slow-burning build, an old-school, thrashy main riff, a heavy pre-chorus, and a big, loud chorus. The solo was really awesome, as were the guitar harmonies after. I love how Rob's bass is front and centre on multiple songs on this album. I am prepared to say this is the loudest bass in a Metallica record since Ride The Lightning. Overall, this song is really catchy and awesome. "Feeding on the wrath of man" is a cool line, and pretty memorable. I think the only problem with this song is the hi-hat section just after the second chorus, which felt a little longer than necessary to me. I feel this song is talking about the chaotic and powerful forces sculpting who you are in the first 18 years of your life. These could be parents ("violence, inheritance", "split in two"), or the wider world, like technology, or social expectations ("feeding on the wrath of man", "choking on the stagefright"). Overall, this album is much more human, honest, and grounded than most of Metallica's early work, which were all about blood and thunder, like Kill 'Em All. It is definitely more realistic, talking about rough upbringings, the pressures around everyday life, and the risks of letting that early life go to waste. A bit long, but still a great opener to a great album. Score: 15/20
Hardwired - Lux Aterna Moth - Suicide Atlas - Darkness Spit - 72 Seasons is it because I'm not a musician nor know music theory, or are the singles very similar and they kinda go with each other? not sure if that's good or bad. maybe the only thing I'm a bit disappointed with is the guitar tone also feels a lot like on the last record. for the sake of variety, I mean. otherwise, pretty nice so far. hyped for the album and the 11-minute album closer! 🤘
Composition: 4 Memorability: 4 Emotional response: 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Instrumentation: 4 Score: 20!!! i have been into this band for about 32 years, and i never declared myself a fan of this band- until this song. And there are times they've come pretty close. This album might actually beat out St. Anger for me, and that is saying a lot.
Hold on hold on hold on… I met you *at a Metallica concert across the country from your house*, and you’ve “never declared yourself a fan”? Come on, now. You made like a 6-hour documentary about their most hated album. What does it look like when you’re actually a fan of something? 😂
@@MidnightNotion HAHAHAHAAAAA! It doesn't even make sense, especially since i am seeing them a bunch of times on this upcoming tour. i consider myself more of an appreciator than anything. You are right though- i AM a St. Anger stan! But this song actually made me a fan of the band! i can't explain why this was the song to do it. 'Just A Bullet Away' came pretty close though. And it was cool to finally meet you in person!
I’m not here to tell you how to label yourself, but I highly recommend you rethink your definition of “fan.” You’ve got encyclopedic knowledge and book-length blogs about them. If I had the same definition, I wouldn’t be a fan of literally anything yet. 😆
Cool reaction I like all the singles so far cuz they are all different from each other. I'm happy to that 60 they're still making new Music and I'm 55 happy to hear it. Been fan since 84. Hopefully next 8songs are Brutally fast and loose heavier than the singles if not it ok. Classic Rock Magazine heard the give it 8.5 out of 10. So that to me is GD album. Last song on album is 11minutes long. It fast riff wise. 2of my favorite bands are putting out new music on 14 Metallica and Overkill can't wait.
Is there a way you could do a review of the song “All My Best Friends Are Metal Heads” by Less Than Jake it’s fun fast ska song that I would love to hear your thoughts on!
I've really been liking what Metallica has been putting out recently. is it weird to say i like 2008 onward era Metallica a lot more than the first couple albums? ps. i rate this song 12/20 this album will rival hardwired for my #2 album
I think I do prefer this reaction format, sometimes breaking the flow of the song can negatively influence one's reception of the overall experience. Maybe as small suggestion, you could change something visually indicating this is the second listen (could be an effect, a text or even simply a different shirt) it'll automatically guide the viewer. Either ways, good breakup! Question : how do you rank it as an album opener? (for reference, Sandman is one of all-time greatest at this imo)
Funny enough: I think I was accidentally holding a guitar for all of my second viewing (in this reaction). I have to refine the workflow, because this version was really messy and much longer than any of the others. It helps to know that you like it though. As for album openers, by points alone, it’s 13/14, just above Frantic. Oddly enough, they both start with hi-hat and fast picking, so there’s another reference to their catalogue! But for an album opener, I prefer either a little mystery that builds (That Was Just Your Life, Battery), or to just get right into it (Ain’t My B*tch, Fuel).
you should rocker react to "-Human" also by Metallica, yes its on S&M which is a live album, but this song was created solely for this album and doesnt have a studio version
Hey, welcome to the channel! I’ve actually reviewed every single Metallica song they’ve ever released. It’s a long playlist starting way back in October 2020, and it goes in album order. The first few are a bit clunky, but I find my way eventually. I hope you’ll check it out and try to rank the songs yourself! ua-cam.com/play/PLQJkBy5twOllul9b0ozr6TrsFK1TCGxH_.html
Ain't gonna get anything different. Difference between us old Metallica and newer fans is.... us old guys r happy w this sound. We know it's all going to come to an end soon. U young "fans" by the way u critique makes u sound like u can do better. I'll tell u I waited damn near a decade before death magnetic for a band to take they're place, and u know what happened? Nothing except more great Metallica songs. Everyone is entitled to an opinion...even if they don't have a clue what they're talking about 🤟
I don’t think we can categorize fans into “young” and “old” so plainly. I’ve met a lot of old fans who think the band stopped being good after Justice, and I’ve met a lot of young fans who can’t stand the sound of Kill ‘Em All. It’s all relative. Let’s just remember that if someone likes the band, they’re a fan, and that’s the only measurement anyone should need. There’s no use trying to figure out which fan is better or smarter or more of a fan. We’re all here because we love Metallica. 🤘
Good song, second best of the album so far for me. Think all the sections sound really good here but some of the transitions are just a BIT wonky here. There’s also that weird false build in the intro where they build it up with adding Lars’ but then he drops out at the next intro section and ruin the build. I think the two common problems I’m starting to notice in these songs are false building and too much Lars just hitting the high hat when they need him to do something besides an actual beat or if there’s any bits of time between hits or something. Maybe it’s just me but I prefer when the drums just drop out entirely to keeping quarter notes on the high hat and think it’s better to do that in the studio even if they keep the beat live. Still enjoyed everything so far and excited for the album! Favorite part of this song is by far the key change to A flat, I’ve had that stuck in my head since I first heard the song. I also think this might be the best James has sounded in the 4 songs, this or Lux I’d say
METALLICA COULD DO A LOAD/RE-LOAD PART 2? FORGET YOU HATERS!!! IF DON'T LIKE IT... TOO BAD... THEY MADE YOUR FAVORITE BANDS!!! SORRY... THEY'RE NOT TEENAGERS NO MORE... IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!! PICK ON ANOTHER BAND!!! METALLICA SOLD MORE ALBUMS THAN YOUR BAND'S AND OLDER AND GETTING BETTER!!!🎼🥁🎸🤘🔥💯🙏😎🎶🎵💀🔥
i know you’re a man of statistics , and i just looked at this so here you go: your least “popular” (according to youtube) Metallica rocker review is Nothing Else Matters, followed by Seek And Destroy, and your most popular, non-72 Seasons one is Hate Train. thought this was a rlly funny statistic and wanted to share it.
Seems like this is an unpopular opinion, but as structurally formulaic it may be, I really like the pre chorus. I think it's super groovy and heavy. That said, I agree that the song is structurally boring.

i have been into this band for about 32 years, and i never declared myself a fan of this band- until this song.
💀 💀
@@MidnightNotion HA! Touche?
I've really been liking what Metallica has been putting out recently. is it weird to say i like 2008 onward era Metallica a lot more than the first couple albums?
ps. i rate this song 12/20
this album will rival hardwired for my #2 album
Waiting reaction on all tracks from this album
Was the cough a bad seed reference? :)
I was wondering who would be the first to catch it. 😉
you should rocker react to "-Human" also by Metallica, yes its on S&M which is a live album, but this song was created solely for this album and doesnt have a studio version

@@MidnightNotion im so sorry about that i didnt find it when i searched for it, i just watched it now though, thourougly enjoyed it, thanks
Let’s be honest, it’s not “fuel”…:) , but it’s still good. By the way only a drummer can pick fuel over blackened….
Why are you yelling?
Also, who are you talking to? Nobody here dislikes Metallica.
Lol Imagine if it was another rick roll edit: 😂 lmao I commented that before I even watched and you got me good
Hell yeah! I’m so good at April Fools! 🤣🤣🤣
Bro you got more songs from this album to react to!
I know I know! My work/life balance shifted drastically, so it’s been tough. I’ve got lots to say, and I WILL, but I just need time.
I agree. New songs just seem a bit boring….or something… Can’t quite put my finger on why I’m not fully enjoying the new stuff
i know you’re a man of statistics , and i just looked at this so here you go:
your least “popular” (according to youtube) Metallica rocker review is Nothing Else Matters, followed by Seek And Destroy, and your most popular, non-72 Seasons one is Hate Train.
thought this was a rlly funny statistic and wanted to share it.
Interesting! I had no idea.
Seems like this is an unpopular opinion, but as structurally formulaic it may be, I really like the pre chorus. I think it's super groovy and heavy.
That said, I agree that the song is structurally boring.
Waaaay too much taking man 🥴🤦♂️
Feel free to not watch 🤷♂️
