Fans getting upset about this result is ridiculous for so many reasons. The purposes of this match were to get some minutes into the player legs, take a look at as many players as possible, see what they have so far embraced from the manager's instructions and figure out what positions we need to fill via incoming transfers. Much rather this than a meaningless "win" in what was basically an intense pre season training session against visiting opponents. To use a well worn cliché "you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs"

Preseason is just for match fitness, that said its nice to concede less and score a few Purley for confidence, but in reality this score means nothing. I've seennus have good preseason and bad season and the other way round. If anything, maybe it will make our owners push just a little further when buying in new players. KRO

The first time many of these players had even played together against another team, and with no attempt by Davies to put out the first XI. What on Earth were fans expecting? Who will even remember this fixture half way through the season? It's only a glorified training session, after all. 10/10 for scenery though! I kept expecting to see Julie Andrews running down the wing in acres of space.

I've been a tad concerned, given the exuberance of fans this summer, that if we get off to a slow start fans will be disproportionately disappointed, given that we've hyped ourselves up. Hope that makes sense. You've called it right imho. No one wants their team to lose especially by 5 goals, but as long as we ain't losing 5-0 in a league or cup game when it really matters, I'm not going to lose sleep. TBH these days I won't lose sleep if we lose when it does matter, I've learned to put my mental health first. Who says you have to be barmy to be a bluenose? lol

I can't see any of them starting this season, but maybe off the bench or in the BSM cup. Hanson looked decent, and so did Keshi tbh. I was surprised that we had 2 games of 45 minutes. We lost the first half 2-0 and the second half 3-0. I agree that we do need at least 6 new players, maybe more. Definitely need all areas strengthening!

I can only assume he wanted to give every player an opportunity, and to assess if they will play a role this coming season, or will the go on loan or drop back down. I agree watching it live the fitness levels was most important. The one thing that did stand out for me was none of the youngsters really stood out as they may fight for the starting squad. The regulars didn't exactly standout but you could tell them apart from the youngsters. It's apparent we need at least 6-8 players at a minimum and that's if we only lose a couple. DAVIES has said that you need super fit players to play the high pressing game he wants. Under 4 weeks to go and a lot of work to do to be anywhere near fit enough for the Reading match. Emil Hanson was by far our best player. Donovan and Khela looked promising but the other youngsters looked out of their depth, especially Josh Home who was very poor I felt sorry for Alfie May , he didn't receive any service from midfield at all.

Agreed, Emil Hansson looked fast and tricky in various parts of the game and as usual Romelle was busy. Agree not worried but i would have started my best 11 in first half to see what it can be at this point then bring on the rest in the next half. One thing i noticed which may be of concern was how small the team was in compared to paderborn. Literally Blues looked avr 5ft10 height and they were like 6-2. Felt we were pushed around easily losing balls and no presence in the box. Hopefully some new players they get have some size to them as well as the other qualities you mention..

There was also a lot of youngsters used, most of which will not make the first team next season. You make a good point about the height of the team and that is something that myself and Matt have discussed in previous podcasts. We are thin on the ground - I believe we need 2 centre halves 2 midfielders and possibly 2 strikers. I would also look at cover in the full back positions too. We need quite a bit KRO

Great video. I watched the game. Anderson and hanson both did fine..pity in the same posjtion. No problem for me starting all the kids. Theyve come along to be part of pre season so good for the manager who for me basically said, your part of the squad so your not going to be left out when we have an opportunity to play you. If it was me then l would feel ten feet tall at pulling on a first team shirt and given a chance. You are right. The starting line up against reading will not be anything like this...its all about building togetherness. KRO

We have nearly a month until the season starts when it comes to that first game against reading and I have no doubt this team and squad will be ready to hit the ground running and we will bring in quite a few players between then and now. It was a taring exercise to look at the youngsters and see how they cope under pressure. Padeborn was picked purposely because they are known to put the pressure on the oppression. It's a learning carve for the youngsters and a taste of what's to come in Legae 1.

It was a bit meaningless and it should be remembered that this was our 1st friendly and it was Paderborn's 4th. I would be more concerned that the players came through it uninjured. There was one player who I could see may have a good season however and that's Hanssen. I can see him making a big impression in the coming season if he can stay fit. He has good close control and he has the one thing that frightens opposing defences and that's pace. I would have liked to see him, Alfie May and possibly Jukey on at the same time. 5-0 was disappointing I know but there are more coming in as we speak ( Cochran for one ) and it's much too early to press the panic button.

Especially in League 1 where it is going to be an extremely physical league. Khela had a few moments as did Donovan. Although it was a meaningless friendly what was concerning was how little we created up front. I thought Kamara, Khela and Fogarty looked good. I do think the high press leaves us vulnerable to the counter. Bielik needs to play CM. The lack of players is a bit concerning.

Pre season is about fitness and getting the team to play in the formation he wants to play . The best thing about the game was the blues fan singing on the announcers microphone otherwise it was a forgettable match.

Completely agree we need at least eight new players (likely 12) for that very reason that it’s highly likely a few players will still leave. Great that Bielik is staying - for me he was the most important player to retain. Hope Paik, Buchanan and Miyoshi stay too. High numbers of new players will take time to gel, so we need to remain patient as we won’t hit proper form till likely 5-10 games.

Agreed, Emil Hansson looked fast and tricky in various parts of the game and as usual Romelle was busy. We will be able to look at Alfie May much closer when Chris Davies starts to put more first team players around him, however I'm sure he will get plenty of goals for us this coming season. Agree not worried but i would have started my best 11 in first half to see what it can be at this point then bring on the rest in the next half. One thing i noticed which may be of concern was how small the team was in compared to paderborn. Literally Blues looked avr 5ft10 height and they were like 6-2. Felt we were pushed around easily losing balls and no presence in the box. Hopefully some new players they get have some size to them as well as the other qualities you mention..
Thank you for your comment. With the new additions that will undoubtedly arrive I'm not sure that there was a first 11 available for the Padeborn game. There was also a lot of youngsters used, most of which will not make the first team next season.
You make a good point about the height of the team and that is something that myself and Matt have discussed in previous podcasts. We definitely need more height and a greater physical presence and hopefully that can be addressed with some of our new recruits. KRO and kind regards (Gary)
We are thin on the ground - I believe we need 2 centre halves 2 midfielders and possibly 2 strikers. I would also look at cover in the full back positions too. We need quite a bit KRO

Great video. I watched the game. Anderson and hanson both did fine..pity in the same posjtion. No problem for me starting all the kids. Theyve come along to be part of pre season so good for the manager who for me basically said, your part of the squad so your not going to be left out when we have an opportunity to play you. If it was me then l would feel ten feet tall at pulling on a first team shirt and given a chance. You are right. The starting line up against reading will not be anything like this...its all about building togetherness. KRO

I like that CD gave the youth players some minutes cause as you say it lets them know they are part of the squad and ultimately gets some experience and minutes into the legs.
We have nearly a month until the season starts when it comes to that first game against reading and I have no doubt this team and squad will be ready to hit the ground running and we will bring in quite a few players between then and now.

It was a taring exercise to look at the youngsters and see how they cope under pressure. Padeborn was picked purposely because they are known to put the pressure on the oppression. It's a learning carve for the youngsters and a taste of what's to come in Legae 1.

There was absolutely no point in getting concerned about the result because none of the two starting line ups in each half will bear any resemblance to the team that will start against Reading. It was a bit meaningless and it should be remembered that this was our 1st friendly and it was Paderborn's 4th. I would be more concerned that the players came through it uninjured. There was one player who I could see may have a good season however and that's Hanssen. I can see him making a big impression in the coming season if he can stay fit. He has good close control and he has the one thing that frightens opposing defences and that's pace. I would have liked to see him, Alfie May and possibly Jukey on at the same time. 5-0 was disappointing I know but there are more coming in as we speak ( Cochran for one ) and it's much too early to press the panic button.

Totally agree that it would have been good to see that link up with him and Alfie May as he was non-existent really in the first half but he was getting no service and not much action sadly. Will be totally different once the season starts for sure. I also thought Donovan looked lively in parts as well and it was nice to see him getting some minutes on the pitch.
As you say, all about fitness, avoiding unnecessary knocks and injuries and just getting some minutes into the legs with some match practice. We move onto the next friendly against Solihull Moors on Wednesday evening.

I agree that sending a few of the younger players out on loan will do them the world of good. It is a very big step up to go from the U18's or U21's to competitive mens football. Especially in League 1 where it is going to be an extremely physical league.
Khela had a few moments as did Donovan. We do have a knack of getting some very good players from our academy system 🙂

Although it was a meaningless friendly what was concerning was how little we created up front. I thought Kamara, Khela and Fogarty looked good. I do think the high press leaves us vulnerable to the counter. Bielik needs to play CM. The lack of players is a bit concerning.

It was an underwhelming performance for sure and no one likes getting hit with a 5-0 loss regardless of the context or kind of game it is. Alfie May in the first half had absolutely no service or anything to work with. I look forward to seeing his link up play with Hannsen.
I personally think Bielik is a much stronger CB then CM. He looks a lot more comfortable there as it's his natural position however we 100% need to recruit a player like him in the CM. We need someone who will break up play and get stuck in. I have no doubt we will see several CM's come in during this window. I was hoping to have Marc Leonard at the club by now but that noise sadly seems to have gone quiet.

Pre season is about fitness and getting the team to play in the formation he wants to play . The best thing about the game was the blues fan singing on the announcers microphone otherwise it was a forgettable match.

Completely agree we need at least eight new players (likely 12) for that very reason that it’s highly likely a few players will still leave. Great that Bielik is staying - for me he was the most important player to retain. Hope Paik, Buchanan and Miyoshi stay too.
High numbers of new players will take time to gel, so we need to remain patient as we won’t hit proper form till likely 5-10 games.

I do like how Evan’s has recruited players with experience etc. This league will require hard graft. Quality I do feel needs to come late. It’s the wrong league for pretty football in my eyes

The first few games of pre-season are all about minutes in the legs and fitness levels. Odd results pop up all the time and every year. Alex Cochrane looks like a great player. I am hearing nothing but positives from fan forums and the hearts fans etc. Looks like a steal for the price as well.
