Another symbolism is that at that moment the goalie was another first overall draft pick who turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments in The NHL history.
Mike Lange is in the hockey HOF. Back in the day, when hockey was on tv less, you could listen to the Penguins on the radio and get a great picture in your mind of the action. His goal calls are also unbelievable.
Anyone notice how alone next to the net he is left this first year? SO many tap in goals. Lots of examples of goalies underestimating his shot here too
There is literally no doubt that Crosby is more skilled, more athletic and more technically sound than Wayne Gretzky. Strip away the rules of the game, the weak competition Wayne had, the nonexistent physical challenges Wayne had… Crosbys game would wipe the floor with Wayne’s.
Hahaha! Sometime in the late 90s/early 2000s some American networks put a chip in the puck so it glowed blue and looked like a red meteor when someone hummed a hard shot because the picture quality was so bad lots of new viewers complained that they didnt know where the puck was. Back then, you had to have a degree of knowledge of how the game is played and positioning to know where the puck was, so until we have gotten better definition cameras and tvs, it was very much a niche viewership and difficult for new watchers to follow
Could say the same about Crosby and many other hockey legends from the previous generation. The pens team was terrible in his rookie season, Crosby had 102 points while second highest was Gonchar at 58 points. On Mcdavids rookie team he had Hall and Draisaitl with more points than him. Crosby still had a far better rookie season than Mcdavid. Wasn't even close really. Saying "the difference is insane" between them especially at this stage in their career is a casual take
@@YoYoYoYoYoYoPeace true also crosby practiced with a washing machine and mcdavid had a billion trainers around him his whole life. its a different era so its not worth comparing
And yet they put up almost identical numbers through their first 6 seasons. Both hit 500 points in 369 games. Crosby plays a very different game than McDavid, he's not nearly as spectacular as McDavid (although he has a lot of beautiful plays that have been lost due to the less in depth highlight reels from that time.) His game is based on having unbelievable hockey sense and incredible vision more than beating guys one on one in open ice. Super casual take to claim the difference is insane based strictly on highlights.
Sidney Crosby is the greatest hockey player to ever live.
Hope you enjoyed the video bud :)
yeah lets not get there
SIKE
Uh did Gretzky die or something...
@@michaelh1974 Gretzky was only good for his time period
1:37 Lemieux to Crosby...this was the official passing of the torch. What a moment!
I know right, I'm glad that extended clip still exists!
Another symbolism is that at that moment the goalie was another first overall draft pick who turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments in The NHL history.
5:13 Pens fans had a little foreshadowing of how big an impact Malkin would truly have the year later.
Give it up for HOF announcer, Mike Langs! "Slap me silly, Crosby" and "He beat him like a rented mule!"
That guy is the greatest announcer of all time.

That’s what a first overall pick looks like! What a beast!
Lemieux assisting on Crosby’s 4th goal is pretty legendary ngl
I know right
its 2022 and im here reliving the dream!
Yep!

Slap me silly Sidney
Who was it who said that?

Back when Crosby was 18… back when I was 18 as well. Time flies…
Sidney Crosby is an elite talent and at 34 he’s still going!
Favourite player of all time. I think he’s the best as well
he’s top 10, arguabley top 5 all time
So good

The 4th most goals he ever scored. There's some guys from the 70s and 80s who never made an all star game but had more 40 goal seasons than the kid.
Different eras.
That Pittsburg announcer tries so hard, bless his heart.
Hell yeah, Mike Lange is a legend.
The pens changed their goal horn mid season?
I don't know.
they have a 2 horn system and the one horn stopped working for a bit
@@bradymosberger6271 Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up!
He had Dipietro's number that year lol
xd
Who didn’t?

“SLAP ME SILLY SIDNEY!” The penguins announcers are very weird.

Holy shart the image quality of 15 years ago looks like turds
It does lol.

@@thekiatty6953 Oh yeahhh I saw old footage with the glowing puck hahaa. You do need to have a keen eye sometimes.
Yeah true though most of these clips are worse quality than the native broadcast tho. And the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals can be found online in HD.
original broadcast looked way better. poor quality is due to 15 year old clips being screen recorded with a rock from who knows where
I don’t watch hockey but.. wow.
Is that a good or bad thing?
Idk, ok I guess?
5:22 lol bob errey is such a doofus
watching Crosby highlights makes me realize just how good Conor Mcdavid is. The difference is insane.
