Microsoft announced a new version of Windows 10 called "Windows 10 S" that will be geared towards educational environments, and is basically a locked down, limited version of Windows 10. It only allows apps installed from the Windows App Store, for security purposes. However, Microsoft will also be putting Windows 10 S on their new Surface laptop, which I think is a bad move. You are required to pay an extra $50 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro just to install regular programs.

It took me around 2 -3 hrs to install Chrome.
I had to activate windows which was hidden so I ended up going through the "troubleshoot" to do that. Then I removed the "S" feature. Then installed all my usual extensions and programs.
When removing the "S' feature your asked to let them know why.
I told them it SUCKED.

I’ve bought a laptop for my daughter (15) and yes it was locked down with Windows 10 S. I was locked into Microsoft’s store. I searched the web and there is now a process to opt out of the windows 10 S and go to standard windows 10. So I did. Apparently once this is done, one can not go back into windows 10 S. Once it’s gone it’s gone. Then I slept and shit myself convincing myself I broke the machine. Crazy eh. So when I watched this video it gave me peace of mind that I did the right thing. Microsoft basically scared me when they say on their site that security is now compromised and basically my machine is started to slow! Thanks for being there and making these videos. Paul.

You can still search with Google on an S computer, you just can't put Chrome on it. I us Google on mine to search. The only thing that I do wish I could put on mine is Zoom. During this time of the virus I would like to put zoom on. I am using my Chromebook instead. But I guess I have another 17" laptop I could us it on. I have so many computers I forget I have some of them.

The store was bad back then, but there were some good tools still.
The store has improved a darn lot since then. Steam is in the store now I believe.
It seems to have worked out as many OEMs use Windows 10 S now.

I don't like ANY of the changes that were made from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I do like some of the additions (Linux and App store and some of the free programs on App store) but all the changes and removals SUCK BIG TIME! They removed all the good win games, removed Windows Photo Viewer. The Start Menu sucks, doesn't even work (some of the shortcuts won't show at all). When they made 8 they ruined a good OS. You have to hack the living crap out of 10 to make it good.

@@elevatorschannel8537 windows 10 education is for a different purpose. It is meant for students to install on their own hardware at no cost. Windows 10 S if for hardware that the school owns/issues to students. One is so that students don't have to come out of pocket to have access to the software that their teachers expect them to have, and one is so that educators can securely manage things like student/school data, and the applications that have access to it.
I wonder if I could install this for my dad. He is constantly browsing malicious websites. I tried add block and the usual daily 3am virus scans... didn't work.

The mac appstore is actually pretty good compared to windows store. If microsoft could copy their guidelines and store design, I think people would actually think of using it. Also, you can install anything on a macOS installation. It's not restricted to appstore apps. It's just like the non-retartded versions of windows.

Thank you ThioJoe. Very informative and professional. I agree with everything you said. Now, regarding the issue of them only allowing Bing as the only search engine in 10s... That is so lame. They tried to do that in Edge in the beginning. Even now, Microsoft Edge still won't let you choose any site you want (i.e. Google) as an option for opening a new Tab. It has to either be Top Sites, Top Sites with suggested content or a f****ng blank page. If I'm opening a new tab, it's usually because I have something that I want to look up. I know you can just start typing in the address bar of the new tab to search, but I want Google there like it always used to be for me. I, like so many other people in the world, loved it when any browser used to let me set it up so that when I click new tab, I can have Google right there with the cursor in the query text box ready to type instantly. But not any more. Even if you set up the home button in Edge as Google, they still won't put the cursor in the search box for you... you have to click in the search box every time. They do it so that we will get frustrated and wear us down over time. I know that sounds like I'm lazy, but it's all about efficiency and flow, right? Plus, if it used to be that way, why would they remove functionality for fewer choices that impede the workflow? The only answer is, of course, to try to monopolize. That is why we have to keep on their asses every time they get out of line even just a little bit. Microsoft is great, but damn they are slowly turning shitty in certain small ways. It is up to us to keep the pressure on them (just like with windows 8 and the start menu disappearing in the lower left corner, right?) We bitched and bitched and bayuum... now it's back. So, a little social media pressure worked out quite well in that instance. They know that if enough people are pissed they will steer away from crappy things eventually, right? Hopefully, I mean. 1. It's laughable that so many people are actually buying to the excuse that the limitations are for limiting students. That feature has been around for years now: Group Policy
2. MS has its eyes set on ad revenue, hence the search engine being locked to Bing
3. They ARE trying to limit you to the Windows Store
Group policy is not actually a comprehensive solution, and administering a windows network is costly and complicated. It is substantially easier to secure and maintain a network of computing devices if you can actually lock down the entire software installation and execution pipeline cryptographically and with mobile-style application permissions compartmentalization. UWP does most of this, and windows store developer accounts cover the cryptographic security end by associating an actual human identity for the developer with a signing key. The main element at play in this strategy is the UWP, which is a portable and more secure sort of execution platform than the entire windows legacy.
Yes, they want ad revenue, and they want to be able to charge for promotion on bing and in the app store. So they need to figure out ways to make bing and their app stores more appealing, and less avoidable. But the main goals are hardware freedom and security. They eventually want to be a contender in mobile and other non-desktop computing spaces and they cannot do that without both of those. As long as windows is dependent on legacy compatibility to be useful, they cannot ever be as secure or portable as their competition, which makes windows a ticking timebomb for microsoft.
Granted, window legacy will be important to a lot of people for quite a while, but eventually that will not be the case, and all of microsoft's competition will slowly creep in and consume their userbase if they don't plan for an exit strategy.

You brought up some valid points, but ultimately encouraged me to buy Windows-10 S mode for my mom. I won't have to worry about misbehaving apps or diagnosing slowness over-the-phone a year from now, since Windows can hold apps in the App Store to a higher standard than those you download from the internet. Also, Steam is now on the Windows app store (8:00), so there's that. I'm happy that switching out of S-mode involves a financial transaction, because it means Mom won't do that accidentally. And, while the Bing thing would be a deal-breaker for me, she was probably going to use Bing, anyway.

Yes, every time I have to use Win-7 to do anything, I think "This would be so much easier on Linux". In the background, I have a program running that is converting a long video to 20 minute segments for something I want to do later. I can watch some youtube videos until it is finished.

They are all Windows programs that work under wine. The main thing that unifies them is that they are quite bug free programs because they have to be.
The "Turn off S mode" option was actually free for me. Like, yes I had to "purchase it" in the store, but it cost $0.00 to do so.
They definitely oversold it with the warnings, I doubt S mode has better virus protection than Norton. Had to turn off S mode before I could install Norton.

To me, education editions of operating systems make sense for the purpose it's named after. Having a locked down variant makes a lot of sense for public terminals regardless of the OS running on it. It makes it more end purchaser friendly in the sense that if say, a library or school or office orders a bulk set, they can open the box and not have to worry about disabling features that could pose a risk to their security without having to have a dedicated person on hand to open and configure every machine. It's also a solid (but fairly straightforward to bypass) way to deter people from wanting to walk off with a portable unit like a laptop. Most people wanting to do that are looking to simply format and resell the systems, so having it locked down (potentially at the bios level) would throw a massive wrench in that operation.
All of that goes completely out the window when talking about a consumer level machine made for consumers. There's no reason to lock a person out of the device THEY just paid for in its entirety, and hide the only way out behind a paid upgrade to a PROFESSIONAL suite. That makes no sense on machines that previously were licensed with personal use/home editions of the software. These units are not sold as business machines and aren't being sold to businesses, so why are customers being forced to pay the difference when 10s and 10 home are the same price, and it's 10 pro that costs more due to being bloated with business applications and other applications that serve no purpose to a home user? It reeks of "if we don't get pushback we will just keep doing this"
S was an attempt to make an actually secure windows platform, and it actually does a pretty good job of this. In april of 2018 Microsoft realized the folly of not providing an escape hatch, and turned windows S into a more reasonable 's mode'. Its just windows 10 with 'install only from store' turned on, in a way that can be verified to have always have been in that state since the operating system was installed by the hardware vendor. This means that no program ever ran on the system that could do random insecure things.
You can technically run almost any windows software in s mode. It just has to be packaged in a way to run containerized, and published to the windows store. Not a whole lot of people actually give a shit about Microsoft's plan to make their operating system secure and portable (yet) so not many people are packaging their software for windows in this way (yet).
What I do not understand is why windows hasn't just started doing this themselves, or campaigning for other people to do it. Its what every linux distribution with a package manager has been doing forever.

you wouldn't be able to if they configured the devices properly. S doesn't just restrict you to the store. Restriction to the store just makes it easier for them to do things like restrict by category. The IT department at your school basically just has to uncheck a box to disallow the entire gaming category.

Thanks so much for doing this video! I was going to get a surface laptop until I did some research. 10S was definitely a dumb move by Microsoft.
My grandmother-in-law just got a new laptop from Costco and it's got Windows 10 S. Good thing she knows someone who can fix that up for her. Being locked down to the Microsoft Store absolutely sucks. It's so cut down!

i totally agree....i feel like ive been duped by the company that sold me the laptop yesterday, when they asked what id be using the pc for, i answered for pleasure not really work meaning able to game and access apps, i didnt think id have to specify that i wanted to download other programs not just be locked into only microsoft programs

I am a new windows 10 S mode owner and it is not as horrible as it sounds. I like having a computer that works well with the already installed programs. Programs work much faster and the computer saves lots of battery. I do not care to add too many programs to my computer. I just want to do basic things, check my email, watch a video, listen to music, write a paper, use excel, make a slide, use skype, make notes, I am not trying to do too much and frankly I am tired of dealing with all of the additional software that is useless to me and uses up available memory. I think this windows version is awesome.
This is honestly such a badly informed video. The OS is primarily for education environments, and while it is installed by default on ONLY the Surface Laptop, it can be changed to Windows 10 for FREE.
ClTRlS free for a few months. Why would I pay $1000-2000 computer than have to pay extra to make it work. There are hardly any programs on their App Store.
Yeah, Surface, that's what Joe also says all the time. Forget it! Microsoft will make manufacturers like HP, Acer and Asus install it on their regular PCs. Before the end of 2017, I bet.
