Paul Carrack is just too amazing. Every version of his songs are superb whether they are recorded or live. I am still enamored with his arrangement. He continues to grow musically forever.

You can really hear the blue eyed soul influence in this version. Carrack's voice is velvety smooth. This reminds me of a Van Morrison song but of course it's Mike and The Mechanics .

To me I imagine this song as a message from a Polish Officer to his wife in September 1939, maybe a flier who then had to run to Romania, France and eventually the UK to become one of the few, leaving his family to experience Nazi and Communist horror and repression,. whose sons and daughters rise up in ‘44 sadly failing, then again in ‘81 and finally 90 when freedom was achieved and if alive still he could finally come home to them but sadly as an old man.....
