As Mr. Spock himself might say, "Fascinating." In all fairness, at 3:55 when Mr. Nimoy said his iconic ears cost $600.00, according to the "Inflation Calculator" - "$600 in 1966 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $5,617.83 today." Not exactly the paltry amount implied in the interview. But looking back, it was a worthy investment that did its part to help "Star Trek" stand the test of time. Thanks for posting this!
Aw, I miss Leonard Nimoy. Not just his acting, which was great. But, man, he knows how to tell a story. I could listen to him for hours going on and on about this stuff.
Was the MGM makeup artist the same one that did the pointed ears for the ultra evolved human (David McCallum) in Outer Limits a year before? They sure looked similar.
They should have gone to Friends, Romans, Countrymen. They've been known to lend people ears. Or they could have bought some from the Ears Roebuck catalog.
I remember how Spock’s ears varied between the series and the various movies. I liked the series version better, how they swept up at an angle and then went straight up at the very end. Some of the movie versions looked more like bat ears than Spock ears.
I liked season 1 aside from the alternate factor which was unwatchable. I liked some of season 2 but it had more misses. Season 3 was bad overall. I think snw is good all throughout so far.
Gene Roddenberry took the idea of the pointed ears from an early "Outer Limits" episode entitled "The Sixth Finger" starring David McCallum. ua-cam.com/video/RJuh1PM56CY/v-deo.html
That's somewhat candy coated truth. Gene Roddenberry said in his book, he wanted to exemplfy the devil because he hypothesized that women wd not be able to resist the seducer of the original woman, Eve. Since all women evolved fm Eve, the character was sexualized. He's right abt the red skin, though which also falls into GB atheistic premise. But what people don't know is that GB wasn't an atheist. He had a religion & worshipped a god. He named the character after the man who asked him to produce a tv program that wd draw people away fm God, & give them an alternative to worship, negate God per se. That man was Dr. Spoke, the controversal baby dr who stole all his theories fm his interviews with mothers & published their findings, not his own. Eeeh, not entirely true, that stuff you said about the V sign. It's a jewish ritual sign Nimoy saw during a ritual and got fascinated by it. Nice theories about Babylonian gods, but not at all true in the Star Trek case.

I love how the Human captain taught the Vulkan officer a lesson of humility. 😁
I wonder if he wished Spock a Happy New Ear
🤣👍
The early Spock was harsher-looking than the later version, particularly regarding the eyebrows, which were more slanted and distinct.
I bet the studio gave him a earful for that lol
You must be a surgeon, because you're quite a cut - up, LOL.
@@DanielAppleton-lr9eq lol thanks
I saw them as Elvish
Can you imagine if Leonard Nimoy had played an elf in a _Lord of the Rings_ production?
@@Ragitsu .... Definitely Elrond!

We know, you're gonna be ear all week!

The best ears in the business !
Cool insight. I didn't know that. No bucks no Buck Rogers, well, no Mr. Spock in this case.
So glad the makeup man knew his business.
Easily seen at the beginning was Spock's unique zipped uniform-shirt collar; the ears couldn't be damaged in putting on and taking off the shirt.
Thank you for this.
Thank you for your acknowledgement.
@@DavidRLentz rip Leonard nimoy 😢😢😢😢
“Ear ear!”
Other interesting question is if Mark Lenard (Sarek) was chosen beacouse they could use Leonard Nimoy's pointy ear with him .
wow didn't know that, thanks for the vid!
How earie...
This and Strange New Worlds is the best so far out of the Star Trek franchise 😉 in my opinion

I've always wondered if you touched the top of his ears if you would prick your finger. 🤔
Spock's ears give me oo-mox
What an eary story
Are you telling me, that nobody tried to make pointed ears on an actor or human being ever before spock? That seems impossible.
3:52 $600 in 1966 would be the equivalent of $4,874.31 in today’s money.
Fun fact: Spock may have pointy ears, but he has no heart.
Nah, as McCoy said in one episode, his heart was where his liver should be. Vulcan anatomy was different from humans, but not completely foreign.

What ears?
So, it wasn't a mechanical rice picker wot did it after all?
