    Great, simple builds for your table.
    I noticed you used pocket holes on the sides of the boards. Since the boards expand to their width, and not their length, would you have been better to use your two screws on the end grain sides rather than on the sides of the boards?
    BTW, much better on your music. Any music while you are talking is distracting, and you didn't raise the volume so badly during your time lapse. I could enjoy watching your build much more with this project.
    Thank you

      @swh213 3 роки тому +2

      Putting them on the sides where he did will help prevent the top from cupping over time. As far as wood expansion, you are correct - but the pocket holes will provide enough “wiggle” room for the small amount that top will move. If it was a concern, you can always elongate the screw part of the pocket hole with another bit down from the top of the apron.

    I am really glad I found your channel. You build normal things that don’t require industrial equipment, making your projects accessible to people. Your videos are also very well made.
    I am planning a build similar to this table in the next week or two and used a Father’s Day gift card to order a palm router. I was wondering how you cut slots for the Rockler fasteners (when you use them). I heard you say that you use a 1/8 bit but what depth setting do you use for the edge guide to get it in the right spot?
    Also, I think my wife will want the distressed look with black paint. If I use pine, would you recommend staining it first? If so, what stain do you think would look good under black paint? Thanks for any advice!

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  5 років тому

      Any darker stain should work. However, if you stain it then paint, the paint may not stick to the stained wood very well. May be better to paint the undertone a dark color first? I set the depth according to the clip itself. I just hold it up to the depth gauge and adjust it to the right height.

Thanks for the help :)

      No worries, I figured since you went into more detail on the lower shelf, using 1x6 and cutting it down to 4” and using two of those, I just went with 8” aprons...boards are all cut now...I’ll be using a domino jointer to assemble them, that will be tomorrow’s task :)

  • @greatbigz
    @greatbigz 5 років тому +1

    Hi Matt, found your channel and love your videos. They have helped me a lot in starting up doing woodworking. Quick question; I cut up and made up my first tabletop out of 2x8 construction lumber from home depot. I glued it up and joined it with pocket hole screws. I came back to the project 2 days later and my boards are cupped, without a thickness planer Its pretty much trash. Any suggestions on how to prevent this?

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  5 років тому

      Each individual board is cupped or the entire table top? If it is the table top, did you joint the edges (even using a table saw). This is what helped me more than anything. Also alternating the grain will help. If you look at the end of the board you will see the grain pattern, turn one pattern facing down, like frown, the other up, like a smile.

    • @greatbigz
      @greatbigz 5 років тому +1

      @@731Woodworks each board is cupped. I did not alternate the grain. I didn't hear about doing that until after I did this one. I did join the edges using the method you use on the tablesaw. I think the wood was too wet... I am going to try evening it out with my belt sander but it may be a lost cause.
