Thanks for the info my friend! Pricing projects I am sure it is always a challenge! Keeping track of your time and and applying an appropriate price, I am sure is always a challenge. Because of my limitations I am thinking real hard about building small useful projects to sell! Nothing to the scale of what you have yet anyway! You make some great looking products! We actually have some stuff from another guy we bought several years ago. But it’s very similar to what your building. As always keep up the great work!!!
I am liking your channel. Messed with woodworking for years. Mostly personal and family stuff. Did sell a few items. Had a partner but he was more interested in the beer from a sale. I didn’t have a problem with that, but he didn’t want to go out and sell jobs. I have always sucked at that. It’s like you said hard to keep track of costs versus income. Have since moved to different state and with your videos I see a path. Thanks for your input. Also, just to throw it out,, I was 4f over an accident. I moved from Southern California at the end of April of 2020, to Northern California, where I have been trying to use my experience to start my own backflow testing and repair business. Unfortunately, many of the backflow testing companies who are in operation are very territorial and don't like to help each other out. Even though I have more experience than most of these companies, they refuse to help me because they want to own the market. After watching your channel for a while now, I have learned that the folks in the woodworking community will go out of their way to help their competitors and others. All that to say thank you for doing what you are doing. I wish the folks in my industry were like you. Keep me and my family in your prayers, as we could surely use them.

Matt. I just found your channel this morning!!! You are as good as any I have found in good while!!! Detailed explanations, easy to understand and very creative !!! I totally agree with what Mr. Miller said. "In my day job finding individuals that are willing to teach you how to do the task is really hard. It seems like the mentor mentality has died out. SO I really appreciate the complete transparency you provide on your channel. Which is why, I believe, you are going to crush in this space. "
Don't know what you are talking about- maybe not heirloom, but everything you're building is definitely multi-generational use and cherish items! And really do appreciate the business end: pricing, marketing, and selling of products on your channel!
First off I'm really glad I found your channel. You are by far the most honest person on here. I have a ton of tools. Bandsaws, table saw, compound sliding miter saws, scroll saw, sanders, and lots of knowledge of wood working. About how much do you think I could make annually starting off. I've seen a lot of garbage people say they make tons of money on. I just don't know if it's worth me leaving my current profession for. I like your simple builds and think you're ready for better jointery.
I just wanted to say thank you! I've been struggling with getting sorted with carpentry, I've completed both my level 1 and 2 courses but after spending two years being fucked around by people I was apprenticing for and therefore being unable to complete said apprenticeship ive decided to start making and selling things, this video has helped so so much with ideas for different types of designs and pricing ranges to look at! I've made a couple planters and am just about to start selling them! It feels damn good to be working for myself
Maaannn, your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. Recently got into woodworking myself and wanted to start selling some things. Definitely helped fight off any discouragement i may feel👍
I just want to learn how to make things for my kids’ places and myself but it’s still great for me just in case. I got a Cricut for organizing my house and now I’m doing other things. My son loves building things so if he ever wanted to do some things, we already have the tools for him to use. My husband’s family did construction so it’s in his DNA. I’m buying the stuff so I can do things to do craft things. I didn’t think I would be this deep into doing stuff with wood.
You said it. We are imperfect beings so we build imperfect things. I have to remind myself that, because I keep trying to make everything perfect which isn't possible.
Matt...you have some great projects and I enjoy your videos. you have the right and unique mix of detail and honesty and when you add jn all the help you offer to viewers, well as I said you've got a great recipe. Thank you
@@731Woodworks You’re welcome! I was in the furniture game for years, but I grew up helping my grandfather with carpentry work. My dad had no interest in it, and it was your videos (and Covid), that motivated me to pull out my grandfathers tools. Man!!! I tell you what! They’re all old Delta and Stanley tools, but he had a 18” planer, a miter saw (manual! I know it’s awesome!), a craftsman radial arm saw, jointer, table saw, a bandsaw, grinder, a lathe, anvil, forge, hammers, chisels, and even old hand crank drills! I spent the first 4 months taking everything apart and refurbishing back to new, which was an adventure! It all still worked, but things were in bad shape on some things, especially the bandsaw, which was Crome the 40’s. Anyways... I started making things and we needed a better tv stand. That turned into a full wall unit, and I used the sliding barn doors on it. After some friends saw it, they started asking me to make them one, and I can’t make them fast enough (I was slow at first). Also, try adding beaded board to your designs. I use it instead of ply to back shelving and people love it. I’ve also been playing with wall paper in my pieces for home. I used it in our master closet and my wife is in love with it.
This video really helps out with figuring pricing for me. Thanks for sharing. I never really know exactly what I should price things at, don't want to over charge and don't want to under charge.. (lol) We're up in North East Arkansas area (moved here from Dallas, TX a few years ago). Lots of folks on UA-cam doing videos from this State...
Thank you for the video! Seems like a good reference for many people out there. Let me give you a bit different perspective ) You are, obviously, free to charge whatever the customer is willing to pay but I honestly think you are overpricing your products. Let me explain. I run a small woodworking shop out of my garage as well but my setup is much more safisticated if you will ) I use helical head industrial planer/jointer, in fact all of my tools run on 220. I have a lot of festool products and use graco 9.5 sprayer with laquer instead of paint for my finishes. My finished product has a much better finish quality. Now let's say I am building an x style console table with 2 shelves, white base, stained top, 5 ft long. Let's assume I am using dimensional lumber and pocket holes for joinery. I also run evrything thru my jointer and planer to make it ideaaly square. It takes me $50 in materials (including screws, paint and stain) and 3 hours of work. Reconsider your workflow if it takes you more time, I am always looking for ways to make it simpler and quicker when it comes to the build itself. I charge $40/hr (it's just me, I don't pay separate workspace rent and insurance). It's a fair rate considering the complexity (those builds are very simple). So we get $120 in labor and $50 in materials. Your price tag should be $170. Please don't hate me but I really think that asking $300 for this type of work is a little too much. You are not running a big shop with crazy expenses and this is a very primitive skill set, let's just be honest here. I would charge $280 if I used poplar for the base and ash for the top and do mortise and tenon (festool domino). When it comes to using construction material and screwing it all together, it doesn't have much to do with woodworking. It's just not. I am trying to be hateful here, don't get me wrong, I just don't believe that it's fair for the customer to pay this much, well, at least I don't have guts to ) Would like to hear your opinion, and best of luck!
To each their own. I understand your argument. Obviously you are a real woodworker with real tools of the trade and much more efficient than I. I’ve never claimed to be professional woodworker and have said so many times on this channel. I think it is obvious I’m not since there is no way I could build it in 3 hours including finishing. If I could build them that fast, then I could see lowering the price. I’ll have at least 8 to 12 hours involved in a table like that. I must work very slow compared to your work flow. I have a planer and jointer as well. I don’t have a domino no have no plans to spend that kind of money on something like that. This channel is geared toward beginners using beginner tools and techniques. If that makes me not a woodworker, then I’m not a woodworker. I’m okay with that.
I finally got my shop set up and workable, but only for personal stuff around the house. Then I started watching your videos and I thought hey, I could do that. I did not however think that you could charge that much for these projects! Not that they aren't nice, I just didn't imagine you could get that much. I'm in Canada, so add 30% to those amounts here...I could take my wife out for something other than McDonald's if I sold pieces at those rates! Incredibly helpful information and I love the transparency. Now if only our flag were as easy to build with wood as yours is...
NEW to wood working and crafting. I really enjoy the videos and you are a great help and pleasant to watch . Thanks for the detail steps !!!!! becoming a fan ty
just discovered the joy I get from wood building. as green as green can get, but with videos like yours it's hard to tell i started that build clueless. looking forward the years to come growing with you. keep it up, WOO PIG SOOIE
I'm getting ready to start working on wood projects. I love your channel because you build simple projects that doesn't require too many tools. Thank you for your work and sharing your experience with us!
The drawer box you made for your daughter. Out here in California the side mount rails for the drawers you used, cost you about $25 per pair. You used 4 pairs that alone will cost us $200 just on slides.
Love this video. I'm always asked to build stuff for people and when I give prices they usually say they can go to a store and get it cheaper. They don't get what goes into it! Before you said what you would charge, I played The Price Is Right and try to guess what you would say. Wasn't far off! So I know I'm not over pricing. People are just expecting quality work for cheap prices! Love all your videos! Keep them up! Currently building some side tables for my guest room based off one of your videos!
" I built my wife this purse storage " " I didn't charge her ... Because I'm not an idiot " 😆 Sir or better yet if I may call you sirVivor? Lol Thanks so much for all your info . you have helped bless my woodworking business in so many ways . from squeezing around in my mancave/garage...to turning into a business workshop with work bench , saw table , shelfs and giving me clarity when I step in this garage; that I have a misson to make a asset out of a liability ... The best quality you share is being humble and honest .getting the job , learn and grow Your very talented at what you do brother!!!hats off to you I definitely been giving my stuff away for free lol but lesson 1 is being humble - getting the job - learning the skill - then on the the next level !! I'm confident and ready to bump up the vaule in not only my wood works and art; yet more important ... In myself Thanks again Liam - from TX
Man I really appreciate this video as a new woodworker breaking into the business!! I’ve struggled with this since I started building and this really helps! Love the content thanks a lot!
First time I view one of your videos. I’m more interested in building stuff for family and friends than a business. It’s awesome that you’re pricing your project for those who do it as a business or would like to make it one. Thanks for your time
It cracks me up when you point out tubafour... I don't even hear it, just sounds like the way it should be said. That, or just tuba and we will all know what your talking about. I loved your glock display. Going to make one for a couple s&w's I have to practice, then it is on to a project for my neighbor who lost his dad and brother is a car accident a few years ago. Instead of the challenge coin, we are thinking of the badges his dad and brother wore. Dad was the chief of police in a small town in Texas and his brother was a volunteer firefighter. Thanks for the inspiration.
Standard bid \ price formula ... Cost of material for build + cost of operation divided by 30 multiplied by estimated days to completion + monthly disposables and maintenance items \ 30 x estimated days of completion. That's break even to beer profit if your good on cuts and completion. It's customary to include " incidentals " wether or not you inform customer or not. It's also customary in bidness to add 35 to 50 percent of your base combined number to final price if you are in a " let's make a deal " or " give me a discount " area so that you can be negotiated down with out losing money.
I haven't bought wood for year's. Construction site's give me their wood they cut when building houses all the time. I've got enough 2/4 & & 2/6 & 2/10, 2/12 to last me year's. I also have tons of ply wood in all sizes roof companies give me from their waste left of overs. A lot of big and usable prices. Everyone check your local build sites for wood projects you're going to build. Everything is always always better when it's free.
Looking to EAS out of the Marine Corps here in January, I am modeling my business and projects pretty similar to your work and your videos have helped me out a lot. Especially this one, thank you for all the helpful tips.
Thank you for the video, I really appreciate you mentioning several times that we are not perfect. Its something I struggle with when making things I see all the mistakes that I made.
I really like your farmhouse tables with the X's. I may build one or two one of these days. By the way. I recently took all my scrap construction lumber, cut it into strips and made a butcher block top which could be used for a bench or table top. Why throw it away? That way there is zero waste. You do have to use a lot of glue, but I buy it by the gallon. I made the top in 12" wide sections and then put it through my thickness planer. Glue two of these together and you have a 24" wide top. For finishing touches, I have a Ryobi hand planer. Then, I sand it with various grits with a belt and random orbit sander. I will not use palette lumber. I ruined blades on both my thickness planer and Ryobi planer.
Love that saying "we're imperfect beings so we build imperfect things". I'll definitely be making that a mainstay for myself. Who the heck gave this video 3 👎? Haters! Keep the great videos coming Matt!
You are having a greater impact to those who lost their jobs then just a channel or income for yourself then you imagine now that IS public service, thank you . The reason for your contribution and success beyond the obvious for that reason why your channel is unique, thank you and keep it coming .....NEXT !
Have been trying to get away from flipping dressers as it's pretty much dead for me got stuck with 5 dressers, pretty sure I've commented this before? going to pick up some material for benches once I get my car fixed and can go more than a few miles from home. Thank you for this, have been pondering what I should price them at.
I really liked your dresser project for your daughter which is how I found your channel. I need to make my younger one a 5 drawer chest (no room lengthwise). I'm tired of particle board junk and I'm getting back into wood working now. Do you have a jointer, if so what brand, and are you happy with it? I think that dresser is too low at 500. The vid looked like you had a lot of work in it. I would say you should go up to 700 at least. I love the kreg pocket hole jig, but that dresser had way too many IMHO. It could have been a Kreg sponsored video. Thanks for the pricing transparency! Your videos are very helpful. I just made a dress up wardrobe for my girls for Xmas out of some leftover veneered plywood, but wound up painting one coat of white. After covid ends going to get a sprayer like yours and some quality paint and give it a final coat and needs more sanding/ wood filler too. I was going to use pocket holes but wanted to use my favorite tool- my router and I made it with dado's 23/32.
This video was very helpful. Thank you so much for what you are doing for the woodworking beginners like myself. Keep up the good work God bless you and your family.
Thank you for your content! Much appreciated. Just built a desk for my wife from my own design. Doing that made me want to continue woodworking as a side gig. Went on UA-cam and searched for DIY videos and your video popped up first! I will use your suggestions to further my goals. Thank you again sir for your guidance!
hey man, im new to woodworking, ive already had a couple of clients but your page has helped me immensely, thank you for the content, keep rockin on dude.
Another excellent video! I can't make nice things, so I call it farmhouse :-) but i do need to raise my prices, I have known that. In Sarasota Fl, $175 for a coffee table, $150 for an entry table, kitchen tables started at $550, bench $125, Sofa Table $225, end tables $100, ... lower prices was good to get started and build a small customer base, but I'm just not making what the project is worth. Thanks Matt.
It can be tough. Have you tried staging your projects and taking really good pictures of them to post for sale at the prices you want? Staging can make all the difference.
Thanks for the video. Great video. I truly appreciate your transparency and information on your builds and your prices. (And from some of you other followers as well). Thanks guys. Not a lot of builders or as open as you are and I think its speaks volumes on your honesty and integrity. Trust me because I have seen probably hundreds of video. Im addicted to UA-cam and woodworking channels, but You sir have inspired me to sell my builds and have given me a baseline to start from. I've been watching your channel for about a month now and you a follower in me man. Thanks again 🤜

I've made a couple planters and am just about to start selling them! It feels damn good to be working for myself
Maaannn, your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. Recently got into woodworking myself and wanted to start selling some things. Definitely helped fight off any discouragement i may feel👍
Thank you 🙏🏻
You are one of my favorite people on UA-cam. Thank you for your knowledge.
Awesome. Thank you 🙏🏻
For someone looking to start to get into woodworking this is REALLY helpful. Thank you. God bless from The Netherlands!
I really would enjoy this new jig I have a kreg 3 pocket hole jig and I really like this one !!
You said it. We are imperfect beings so we build imperfect things. I have to remind myself that, because I keep trying to make everything perfect which isn't possible.
It’s tough sometimes 👊🏻
Thanks for your positive fun attitude. They are sure fun to watch.❤
Matt...you have some great projects and I enjoy your videos. you have the right and unique mix of detail and honesty and when you add jn all the help you offer to viewers, well as I said you've got a great recipe. Thank you
I appreciate that!
thanks man. if you’re ever in West Monroe, stop by & have some sweet tea👋🏻
Very helpful. I never know what to charge because I’d do things for people I know for free.
Keep up the great work. Your prices are great. That’s what I would charge. Have a Wonderful and Blessed Day!!! 😀
Thank you
Hey man, check out adding sliding barn doors to your tv stands. I can’t keep them and they’re super easy.
Awesome. Thank you
@@731Woodworks You’re welcome!
Appreciate that you are willing to share this information. And love your shirt too.
Thank you
This video really helps out with figuring pricing for me. Thanks for sharing. I never really know exactly what I should price things at, don't want to over charge and don't want to under charge.. (lol) We're up in North East Arkansas area (moved here from Dallas, TX a few years ago). Lots of folks on UA-cam doing videos from this State...
Glad it was helpful!
Purse storage, “I didn’t charge her, cause I’m not an idiot.” LMAO
I know my limits
Best line in the video!
🤣
@@731Woodworks really you know your customer and set your limits accordingly. 😄
lol
@@731Woodworks Understandable. I tend to think competition, it's out there ) Best of luck to you!
another fantastic contribution thank you💯🎯
You convinced me! I’m building and selling! Am retired so it will keep me out of trouble!!!
Awesome
Don’t know what I’d do if it wasn’t for
great UA-cam channels like these. Yours especially brother, much thanks.👍🏼
You’re welcome 👊🏻
I finally got my shop set up and workable, but only for personal stuff around the house. Then I started watching your videos and I thought hey, I could do that. I did not however think that you could charge that much for these projects! Not that they aren't nice, I just didn't imagine you could get that much. I'm in Canada, so add 30% to those amounts here...I could take my wife out for something other than McDonald's if I sold pieces at those rates! Incredibly helpful information and I love the transparency. Now if only our flag were as easy to build with wood as yours is...
Glad it helped!
Thanks Man! Just found your channel. Very helpful. And I love your shirt. God is Good!
Thank you. Yes He is!
NEW to wood working and crafting. I really enjoy the videos and you are a great help and pleasant to watch . Thanks for the detail steps !!!!! becoming a fan ty

Cmon now. Another fella wood worker
I’m on the Spring side
I'm a couple hours west of ya'll in Victoria. It's almost 8:30 now. I was up late last night! 😂
Thank you for your service as well as sharing your knowledge. God Bless from our LEO family to yours.
Thank you
I appreciate this, I posted my planter boxes but wondered how to fairly price things. I’m new building but I love it and truly inspired.
Liked and shared!
thanks!
just discovered the joy I get from wood building. as green as green can get, but with videos like yours it's hard to tell i started that build clueless. looking forward the years to come growing with you. keep it up, WOO PIG SOOIE
Awesome 👊🏻
Thank you for the video and passing along your knowledge. Lots of good Karma coming your way!
You’re welcome
Thank you sir! I really appreciate you sharing your tips and tricks. Aloha
Glad it was helpful!
I'm getting ready to start working on wood projects. I love your channel because you build simple projects that doesn't require too many tools. Thank you for your work and sharing your experience with us!
Thank you
The drawer box you made for your daughter. Out here in California the side mount rails for the drawers you used, cost you about $25 per pair. You used 4 pairs that alone will cost us $200 just on slides.
Thank you, Matt
Liked this video, very helpful!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Glad it was helpful!
" I built my wife this purse storage " " I didn't charge her ... Because I'm not an idiot " 😆
Sir or better yet if I may call you sirVivor? Lol
Thanks so much for all your info . you have helped bless my woodworking business in so many ways . from squeezing around in my mancave/garage...to turning into a business workshop with work bench , saw table , shelfs and giving me clarity when I step in this garage; that I have a misson to make a asset out of a liability ... The best quality you share is being humble and honest .getting the job , learn and grow
Your very talented at what you do brother!!!hats off to you
I definitely been giving my stuff away for free lol but lesson 1 is being humble - getting the job - learning the skill - then on the the next level !!
I'm confident and ready to bump up the vaule in not only my wood works and art; yet more important ... In myself
Thanks again
Liam - from TX
I appreciate the kind words! Glad the videos have helped.
Great presentation. Northeast Vermont probably would not support your prices. You got to get what you can. Thanks for the valuable info.
Thank you
Man I really appreciate this video as a new woodworker breaking into the business!! I’ve struggled with this since I
started building and this really helps! Love the content thanks a lot!
Glad it helped!
I like this series alot... we even get to see you boxing with a bug.
lol that bug was all up in my business
@@731Woodworks lol ok Mike Tyson 🤣just don't bite its ear
Matt as always thank you for all the info... I can not tell you how much all your videos have helped me with my new little side woodworking business.
Glad to help!
I'm doing well making Matts farmhouse, plans
Early days but thanks for the information you provide.
From Australia I should add
Fantastic!
First time I view one of your videos. I’m more interested in building stuff for family and friends than a business. It’s awesome that you’re pricing your project for those who do it as a business or would like to make it one. Thanks for your time
Thank you. I have a lot of build videos on the channel if you want to check them out
731 Woodworks I’ve checked a couple more videos already. Thanks
👊🏻
It cracks me up when you point out tubafour... I don't even hear it, just sounds like the way it should be said. That, or just tuba and we will all know what your talking about.
I loved your glock display. Going to make one for a couple s&w's I have to practice, then it is on to a project for my neighbor who lost his dad and brother is a car accident a few years ago. Instead of the challenge coin, we are thinking of the badges his dad and brother wore. Dad was the chief of police in a small town in Texas and his brother was a volunteer firefighter.
Thanks for the inspiration.
That sounds like a great piece to build
Thank you and God bless
Thank you
Love these videos. Awesome content. Wife agreed to give this a go selling projects, can't wait to get started!
Go for it!
Love your T-shirts, Brother! (The ones you wear in your videos)
Glad you like them!
Thanks for all your help, been a struggle figuring out where to break even and make enough to keep going
Glad to help
Thanks . This is a great video , especially since I’m from southeast Arkansas
👊
I haven't bought wood for year's. Construction site's give me their wood they cut when building houses all the time. I've got enough 2/4 & & 2/6 & 2/10, 2/12 to last me year's. I also have tons of ply wood in all sizes roof companies give me from their waste left of overs. A lot of big and usable prices. Everyone check your local build sites for wood projects you're going to build. Everything is always always better when it's free.
👍🏻
Well done. Loved this. Thanks for the info.
Glad it helped
Looking to EAS out of the Marine Corps here in January, I am modeling my business and projects pretty similar to your work and your videos have helped me out a lot. Especially this one, thank you for all the helpful tips.
Glad they helped. Thank you for your service
Love these videos! Starting a woodworking business on the side and these videos will certainly help, thankyou!
Glad they help
Thank you for the video, I really appreciate you mentioning several times that we are not perfect. Its something I struggle with when making things I see all the mistakes that I made.
We all see our own mistakes I think
Just discovered your channel and love how insightful you are. Thank you! Subscribed for sure
Awesome, thank you!
I like honest and your work is quality. Thank you.
Thank you
I really like your farmhouse tables with the X's.
Good idea! Thank me for sharing
@@731Woodworks Thankyou!
Thanks for the info 731 woodworks very helpful!
Love that saying "we're imperfect beings so we build imperfect things". I'll definitely be making that a mainstay for myself. Who the heck gave this video 3 👎? Haters! Keep the great videos coming Matt!
lol thanks. Can't make everyone happy
You are having a greater impact to those who lost their jobs then just a channel or income for yourself then you imagine now that IS public service, thank you . The reason for your contribution and success beyond the obvious for that reason why your channel is unique, thank you and keep it coming .....NEXT !
Wow. I appreciate the kind words.
Have been trying to get away from flipping dressers as it's pretty much dead for me got stuck with 5 dressers, pretty sure I've commented this before? going to pick up some material for benches once I get my car fixed and can go more than a few miles from home. Thank you for this, have been pondering what I should price them at.
👊 Chilo Homie. Best video I've seen. God bless
Thanks!
Got up early to catch this before work. Very helpful video. Thanks Matt!
Awesome. I really appreciate that! Have a good day.
Thank you for being willing to share so much....God Bless you my brother
You’re welcome
Thank you. I got a jointer recently. It’s very nice.

Great rundown without a cornhole board in sight! ;)

Awesome! Go for it!
hey man, im new to woodworking, ive already had a couple of clients but your page has helped me immensely, thank you for the content, keep rockin on dude.
Glad it helped!
I appreciate the kind words 👊🏻
