Hi there, I have picture defects on disc 4 and 7 from ETD where the picture pans down during a fight scene with Williams and Parsons. Do you have that issue?
@@3rd-Wave_Rebel Sorry about the late reply I had to go back and rewatch it, I'm not noticing an issue with that scene, it does look like the camera operator definitely pans slights towards the tail end of the fight but nothing that would be done in post it was in camera from what I could tell. If anyone else notices otherwise please comment down below!

The "visual error" you're describing does not appear to be an instance of the letterbox mattes/black bars shifting/warping during the disc's playback. Instead, there appears to be an object obstructing/entering the frame at this moment in the scene as the camera pans, which could appear at first to be a part of the mattes. If you go frame by frame and adjust the contrast on your TV (for the purposes of this test), you may be able to more clearly see that this obstruction is inherent to the filming of the scene, rather than a defect in the film's master/transfer. It is likely, given the low angle of the shot at this particular moment, that the filmmakers had placed the camera behind an object like a chair, and when the camera pans at this particular moment it catches the edge of the chair/object which created this additional black edge on the image. Of course, this film is a classic in its own right, but please keep in mind that the filmmakers who produced ENTER THE DRAGON did not approach the making of this film with the utmost attention to detail, as is common for many films of this genre (or of this brand of filmmaking, in general). I've verified that this "visual error" is present on other prints of this film, including the version currently streaming in the US on HBO Max, and on an old bootleg Hong Kong DVD of the film that I own. With this in mind, we will not be able to provide you with a replacement disc. However, we'd be happy to send you a replacement for the damaged booklet/insert you received with your copy of BRUCE LEE: HIS GREATEST HITS (this damage was likely caused while your copy was in transit, as these booklets can shift and bend inside the packaging).
@@3rd-Wave_Rebel Thanks for posting the message oh that section was definitely the top of the chair if it is what you were describing, it was a worms eye view for the camera and a pretty low angle. Sounds like they definitely investigate the heck out of it haha they even went to the hbo max and bootleg versions to verify.
The thing that makes this better is you are getting everything all in one place and this is the first one to have enter the dragon with the rest of his movies sold this way that you never got it this way before that makes it more up to date and know one has been able to buy it this way the others did not have enter the dragon with them before
Exactly my friend! Honestly it’s the box set Bruce Lee fans have been waiting for, and it is honestly the last Bruce Lee boxed set that needs to be released as the definitive one in my opinion.... at least until the next format comes out lol, thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the comparison review. Awesomeness. I already have the Master Collection DVD box set, but I want to watch them cleaned up, so I just ordered the Criterion Collection (thanks to this vid helping me pick). Oh, and I do know that the blu-rays look better in the Criterion Collection because they were mastered in 2k. That makes a big difference, even if only on a 1080p player & HDTV. Between the cleaner restorations and having the theatrical version of Enter, I just *HAD TO* get it.

For sure, it’s going to be a matter of time before it comes out on 4k stateside and UK wise, the only thing is what are they going to include with it? They’ve recycled special features on the criterion from the shout factory release so I hope they get some good extra features. I’m not 100% sure they’ll be able to extract a better picture from what they’ve done so far but that’s my opinion

My son Has been a bruce lee fan for a long time he is looking for bruce lee films on blu ray along with original poster in side he has the films on dvd but not with original posters inside at least he has them he looking forward to find enter the dragon with extra stuff to hope so on blu ray with new cover the one in the middle of the table i have not seen that version ill look it up and see what it has in it thanks for sharing your video with us happy new years to you and your family sometimes you cannot find the film or films you want to find because dvds and blu ray s going away later on we are already have been watching shows and movies streaming only it was hard to find a few movies because they were 80s rare films on dvd

I was so excited to pick this up because Enter the Dragon is the only film of his I’ve seen. I can’t wait to dive into this soon (watching other Criterions that I bought first).
Honestly I totally agree, I have a funny feeling the 4k treatment will be coming in the near future. As far as special features that has been the worst of the box set, there is hardly anything in the way of new special features and what little there are have not been having a lot of replay value for me. I don’t particularly need 4k personally and as for the collection i’ll be keeping this as my final Bruce Lee boxed set until the next format , but even then not sure if that will be of major interest to me.
Yes, some of my other viewers have informed me, while cool it appears it’s only an overseas release currently. The package, collection and extras look pretty cool from what I read.
Yeah definitely a missed opportunity but it was probably a rights/money issues, looking at the restoration they definitely paid attention to detail but on the supplements they left a bit to be desired for sure
As long as they include the music score from the original USA release of “The Big Boss”… which, due to an import issue, was released in the USA as “Fist of Fury”… with that wonderfully cheesy… but catchy music score!
Sadly I won’t be, unfortunately I haven’t gotten into collecting any foreign releases of films which are sometimes more robust releases with better transfers and features than alot of the American releases of some of my favorite films but the collection looks amazing and is jam packed with tons of bonus content from what I can see. If They ever release it in the USA region format I’ll have to see if I can get my hands on it. Thanks for the comment!
Awesome! As a Bruce Lee fan I own all of those editions previous to the Criterion. Even own the later SHOUT! 4K Remasters (not exactly 4K) but a great video upgrade to the Blurays from the SHOUT! yellow Collectors boxed edition. I’m really hyped for the Criterion Collection to added it to my collection, I hope that finally Enter The Dragon could have in this Collection a greater video and audio quality over all the previous editions available. No problem my friend! From my eyes I feel the quality is great, and it restored the original version of ETD which I always preferred personally, definitely the last Bruce Lee boxed set you’ll need until the next format or until they actually release the Green Hornet show on dvd/blu ray haha

Wish Criterion took their time with the set. It's so same... I would rather have real pictures of Bruce Lee and The O.G. Movie posters on each Disc. I'd also wish the menu of the discs had scenes from the films not just the black and yellow picture. Still fun because they're all together and you get Original ETD cut but their is definitely room for someone to improve on this and make a badass boxset. Thats just my opinion. I might get this for ETD cut.
Hey my friend I totally agree Criterion’s aesthetics are built on their same menu template for the most part doesn’t matter which release it is they seem to keep it the same, I’d say the collectible aspect was well done on Shout factory’s legacy collection I compared it to but this is the one box set to break for for what it’s worth but this will be the last one for me for sure

The newest ones Criterion are the best quality and they have all of his films including Enter the Dragon’s original cut (which I prefer) this one has the mini magazine with the write up of the films. But if you find the shout factory one with the book, it is blurays and dvds, with a couple extra discs with documentaries that one has lots of special features, and original art from the movies and a Bruce lee booklet but it doesn’t come with Enter the dragon. Also they do sell the shout factory ones separately with the covers which look like the original posters I believe, I could be wrong though.
Big Boss, Fist of Fury, and Way of the Dragon come with Cantonese, Mandarin, and English dub. The Mandarin is listed as original audio, I suspect that the Cantonese tracks may not be despite being Monaural but can't confirm because I never watched them in that audio presentation growing up strictly the English dubs that have been carried over from the original releases.
Hey jd7 was just wondering since you have the collections if you can help me out. So for the longest time all I’ve wanted was the original Bruce lee films with a Dubb that sounds more like Bruce. (Other dubs just sound way off). Does this collection have a better Dubb? Or can you recommend any of the other collections that do. If not I really wish they would make cause that’s be awesome
Hey Joe, unfortunately the dub you seek I’ve tried to find as well but the way they used to film these movies was typically without audio equipment and it was redubbed by different actors for each market to my knowledge, I wish there were dubs done that sounded like Bruce but unfortunately none had been made, the only Film of Bruce’s to feature his voice was Enter the Dragon. Sidenote**** If in the future anyone sees this comment and by some miracle this is no longer the case please sound off below!
I have questions about this now. Is The Big Boss in the Criterion has the US dub when Cheng sits by the river and talks to himself? Does the Criterion version for The Big Boss have the annoying additional sound effects that were used in the 2005 collection? Because I hope it doesn't in this. Also, are there no Cantonese additional tracks in the English version of The Big Boss? It will be a relief if it doesn't.
Hello there! Yes all the wacky extra sound effects are gone, audio for Cheng while he is sitting by the river is present. There is a Cantonese and original/new mandarin audio track but for me the English dub is how I watch Bruce’s films regardless so I haven’t listened to those tbh.

What I mean about the additional Cantonese soundtrack in the English version is that on the 2005 version, there will be some scenes with the Cantonese tracks playing in the English version. It plays out of place sometimes. I was wondering in this, we don't have to hear them in the English version from the Criterion.

I have been waiting for the day when I can buy everything in collection that you have the hong kong movies with the one Warren brother's movie enter the dragon to make it a completely each movie were everything comes. 5:40 - 5:45 I'm new to your channel admittedly, but I'm extremely confused as to why the shout factory release coming with DVD copies of the film matters. I mean if the argument is not everyone has a blu-ray player, I'd argue that if you were spending as much as the Bruce Lee Legacy Collection is currently listed on eBay, you would probably benefit more from just buying a cheap blu-ray player and the criterion blu-ray box set instead. But maybe I'm missing something, care to elaborate?
Hi Steven thanks for your comment, more than anything the point was to try and be as comprehensive as possible when describing the contents of each boxed set as best as I could. Not necessarily an argument or debate to be made but rather being informative as to what each boxed set comes with so people can decide which boxed set they would rather own and what their money would be buying. It would be up to them preference wise if they don’t have a bluray or if they would like dvds to be companions to their blurays or simply buying the blurays.
@@JD7Videos Yeah, I've heard rumors that the removal of the dislike counter is actually a big factor as to why. Allegedly, the change impacted the website's base code. This is a bit technical, but if true, it's not entirely unheard of for glitches like that to happen. Technically, it could be possible for basic code to be changed without having any negative impact whatsoever, but it certainly can lead to problematic issues. It could potentially be so bad, not just base code, but code all across the website would have be altered to account for the change. But like I said, this isn't confirmed, it could just be complete coincidence after all. Just something to keep in mind.
I promise you this Arrow collection coming out soon will be the very last Bruce Lee set I ever purchase.. I have them all and some look Ok as an improved transfer but this Arrow set looks restored the best. So much wasted money and I'm done with it already.
I understand, I just can’t bring myself to dole out anymore money towards the films currently. There’s only so many times I can rebuy the same series, Rocky, Bruce lee, Star wars before I feel a sense of diminishing returns. GAME OF DEATH 2 / TOWER OF DEATH absolutely should be in all of these sets. It's a pretty major piece of context regarding Lee's posthumous career AND more importantly the mindset of the Hong Kong industry at the time, a philosophy of 'if it worked before, keep doing it at all costs' that carried their film business well into the early 2000's before pandering to the Mainland market ultimately robbed true Hong Kong cinema of nearly everything that made it unique. GOD2 is shameless, even tasteless, in how it uses earlier Lee footage to cash in on his legacy so many years after his death, but nonetheless unlike the onslaught of movies featuring the Lee clones, this one DOES feature the most footage of him outside of his own pictures, and is thus important to an overall understanding of how long-lived his impact was in Hong Kong itself, and the lengths to which his own studio was willing to go to bleed more money from his legacy. Beyond that, if GOD2 was made as a standard martial arts picture without a single frame of or reference to Lee, it would still be an OK little action picture in terms of story and action choreography, and very much representative of similar pictures being made at the time. Cheers.
When you put it into context as this, I can certainly see where you’re coming from but overall it is in terrible taste, I can barely stand to watch G.O.D. 1 because of the fact they used his literal funeral to produce the film and basically did away with his original concepts, aside from that I feel like the documentary Golden Harvest made at the time of his passing was even worse, it was like they were paparazzi sticking the cameras into all of Bruce’s family’s vulnerable moments shortly after his passing. @@JD7Videos There's certainly no disputing that what they did was in bad taste, especially to westerners, although GOD1 wasn't the only film (over the years) to use the funeral footage as you note, only the highest-profile production, and probably the most offensive because the footage was used to support the death of a 'Billy Lo' in the film, rather than as part of a 'tribute' as in GOD2 (depending on which version one watches; there are at least three). In fact, at the time of Lee's death it wasn't uncommon for famous HK people (not just actors) to have very public memorial ceremonies, with open viewings of the body, paparazzi galore etc. (actually, that was common in other cultures, too). His wife and kids couldn't have liked that, but the cultural expectations probably gave them no other option. That aspect on its own wasn't considered bad taste in the Hong Kong of the era. Exploiting it in a film like GOD1 several years later was undeniably questionable, but even that wasn't particularly scandalous, locally, at the time because they'd been exploiting Lee's legacy (via the clones) for years; the moral outrage came largely from the west in the ensuing years, and persists to this day, with each new generation that 'discovers' GOD1+2 voicing their shock while rarely placing them within the greater context of showy, freewheeling, anything-goes Hong Kong culture at the time, in which it makes a lot more sense despite the obviously crass nature. Again, those are the reasons that both should be included in any Bruce Lee collection; neither outshines his 'official' films, but both provide fascinating, troubling codas to his life and career. Criterion probably could've done more to contextualize those aspects via commentaries or interviews for BOTH GOD1 and GOD2 instead of just the first one, but it sounds like they simply chose to include the latter for its historical significance and let viewers figure that one out for themselves, which I think robs them of the bigger picture. The old Fox set (shiny blue box) did the same thing, as did it's Hong Kong counterpart, although the latter at least included the HK version of Enter The Dragon. Thanks for the reply!
Wow I never realized the extent of the normalcy it had in culture, I think you’re spot on as well they did use Bruce’s popularity to their advantage always, a star of his caliber wouldn’t just stop being relevant despite his passing even today people are still tapping into some of his myths and life, just look at random films such as Birth of the Dragon taking artistic liberties to new heights with little or no historical accuracy. I agree criterion’s inclusion of GOD 2 definitely sparks my interest of its inclusion even if it came across crudely in my video! Thanks for the great dialogue!
@@JD7Videos I actually saw Birth of the Dragon at TIFF. Something seemed off about the whole concept of it (especially a white guy being the main character in a film with that title!) before I went in, but it was a rush ticket and it was playing next to a theatre that I'd just left. I just couldn't believe that they still felt a borderline 'magical Asian' movie would still be a good sell in 2018. Another shit version of the Lee legacy is the TV series 'The Legend Of Bruce Lee' from Mainland China (as if they had ANYTHING to do with his legacy). 50 episodes of constant inaccuracies and barely subtle pro-China propaganda, as if they "gave" him to the world. Frankly, it's probably just as offensive as either GOD films because it was made in a supposedly more enlightened age. But hey, Mainland China is like an alternate reality at the best of times; no surprise they'd do the same with a Bruce Lee series. Another needless cash-in on Lee's life was the documentary 'I Am Bruce Lee' from a few years ago. It's not bad or disrespectful, per se, but it's pretty pointless because it uses tons of footage of Lee to background a bunch of relative nobodies and MMA meat-heads fawning over how much he "meant" to them even though they're all far too young to have ever met him. It's basically "I watched his movies or read his book and got inspired". All super-positive and blatantly self-serving. I'm sure there are other opportunists out there who've made good cash exploiting Lee's legacy. Sadly, this kind of coat-tail riding will go on forever . . . Cheers.
Actually, there is a 7-disc version of the Ultimate collection boxset(blue box) that does include Enter the Dragon as well as Tower of Death/GOD 2. So I guess technically the Criterion boxset isnt the first boxset to feature all of his films including ETD? And its hard for me to pick a favorite BL film. I love them all...including Game of Death.
@@JD7Videos It may have been region based? Not sure, but I do own it and its not region restricted. It can be played on any dvd player. Presentation is pretty much the exact DVD set like the Ultimate collection boxset you mentioned in the video except it includes Enter the Dragon and a bonus content disc(Which has the movie trailers of all the films, photo stills, game of death outtakes, and some old asian celeb interviews like Sammo Hung and so forth. So 7 disc instead of 5 disc. It has the option of either an english or Chinese? menu. Only thing is, I believe most the films are in Cantonese and mandarin dubs only(even enter the dragon). The exceptions being Game of Death 1 and 2. Those are only in English. And Enter the Dragon is the full version, not the theatrical version. As well as having the Golden Harvest/Hong Kong opening credits( Thats similar to the opening credits of his first 3 films) and not the US opening credits version where you see Jim Kelly and John saxon arriving in hong kong(which is a bonus feature on the bonus content disc as an 'alternate' ETD opening).
Damn, it’s always outside the USA that gets awesome releases/boxed sets half the time, I’d say this one is one of those times too, but luckily we have this box set too. Not gonna lie I’m a bit biased to this newest release because it’s criterion, even with some of the better supplements not included, but that is definitely something worth noting on that release’s end! TBH I wasn’t thrilled at first, the pop art style that they use is okay, but they could have done something a bit less funky and given a better presentation, but CC has been on that pop art kick for awhile and I’m sure they wanted to make it pop for better or worse

My son Has been a bruce lee fan for a long time he is looking for bruce lee films on blu ray along with original poster in side he has the films on dvd but not with original posters inside at least he has them he looking forward to find enter the dragon with extra stuff to hope so on blu ray with new cover the one in the middle of the table i have not seen that version ill look it up and see what it has in it thanks for sharing your video with us happy new years to you and your family sometimes you cannot find the film or films you want to find because dvds and blu ray s going away later on we are already have been watching shows and movies streaming only it was hard to find a few movies because they were 80s rare films on dvd

I feel this was rushed, Bruce deserves fat better. True 4k picture and sound for one. New special features, better packaging, no bent magazine, etc
Honestly I totally agree, I have a funny feeling the 4k treatment will be coming in the near future. As far as special features that has been the worst of the box set, there is hardly anything in the way of new special features and what little there are have not been having a lot of replay value for me. I don’t particularly need 4k personally and as for the collection i’ll be keeping this as my final Bruce Lee boxed set until the next format , but even then not sure if that will be of major interest to me.

Yes, some of my other viewers have informed me, while cool it appears it’s only an overseas release currently. The package, collection and extras look pretty cool from what I read.

Yeah definitely a missed opportunity but it was probably a rights/money issues, looking at the restoration they definitely paid attention to detail but on the supplements they left a bit to be desired for sure
As long as they include the music score from the original USA release of “The Big Boss”… which, due to an import issue, was released in the USA as “Fist of Fury”… with that wonderfully cheesy… but catchy music score!

Sadly I won’t be, unfortunately I haven’t gotten into collecting any foreign releases of films which are sometimes more robust releases with better transfers and features than alot of the American releases of some of my favorite films but the collection looks amazing and is jam packed with tons of bonus content from what I can see. If They ever release it in the USA region format I’ll have to see if I can get my hands on it. Thanks for the comment!

Awesome! As a Bruce Lee fan I own all of those editions previous to the Criterion. Even own the later SHOUT! 4K Remasters (not exactly 4K) but a great video upgrade to the Blurays from the SHOUT! yellow Collectors boxed edition. I’m really hyped for the Criterion Collection to added it to my collection, I hope that finally Enter The Dragon could have in this Collection a greater video and audio quality over all the previous editions available. Wish Criterion took their time with the set. It's so same... I would rather have real pictures of Bruce Lee and The O.G. Movie posters on each Disc. I'd also wish the menu of the discs had scenes from the films not just the black and yellow picture. Still fun because they're all together and you get Original ETD cut but their is definitely room for someone to improve on this and make a badass boxset. Thats just my opinion. I might get this for ETD cut.
Hey my friend I totally agree Criterion’s aesthetics are built on their same menu template for the most part doesn’t matter which release it is they seem to keep it the same, I’d say the collectible aspect was well done on Shout factory’s legacy collection I compared it to but this is the one box set to break for for what it’s worth but this will be the last one for me for sure

The newest ones Criterion are the best quality and they have all of his films including Enter the Dragon’s original cut (which I prefer) this one has the mini magazine with the write up of the films. But if you find the shout factory one with the book, it is blurays and dvds, with a couple extra discs with documentaries that one has lots of special features, and original art from the movies and a Bruce lee booklet but it doesn’t come with Enter the dragon. Also they do sell the shout factory ones separately with the covers which look like the original posters I believe, I could be wrong though.

Yes they all have English dubbing and Enter the Dragon was done by Warner Bros so that was done in English
Do these movies have the original audio in Cantonese?
Big Boss, Fist of Fury, and Way of the Dragon come with Cantonese, Mandarin, and English dub. The Mandarin is listed as original audio, I suspect that the Cantonese tracks may not be despite being Monaural but can't confirm because I never watched them in that audio presentation growing up strictly the English dubs that have been carried over from the original releases.

Hey jd7 was just wondering since you have the collections if you can help me out. So for the longest time all I’ve wanted was the original Bruce lee films with a Dubb that sounds more like Bruce. (Other dubs just sound way off). Does this collection have a better Dubb? Or can you recommend any of the other collections that do. If not I really wish they would make cause that’s be awesome
Hey Joe, unfortunately the dub you seek I’ve tried to find as well but the way they used to film these movies was typically without audio equipment and it was redubbed by different actors for each market to my knowledge, I wish there were dubs done that sounded like Bruce but unfortunately none had been made, the only Film of Bruce’s to feature his voice was Enter the Dragon.

I have questions about this now. Is The Big Boss in the Criterion has the US dub when Cheng sits by the river and talks to himself? Does the Criterion version for The Big Boss have the annoying additional sound effects that were used in the 2005 collection? Because I hope it doesn't in this. Also, are there no Cantonese additional tracks in the English version of The Big Boss? It will be a relief if it doesn't.
Hello there! Yes all the wacky extra sound effects are gone, audio for Cheng while he is sitting by the river is present. There is a Cantonese and original/new mandarin audio track but for me the English dub is how I watch Bruce’s films regardless so I haven’t listened to those tbh.

What I mean about the additional Cantonese soundtrack in the English version is that on the 2005 version, there will be some scenes with the Cantonese tracks playing in the English version. It plays out of place sometimes. I was wondering in this, we don't have to hear them in the English version from the Criterion.

5:40 - 5:45 I'm new to your channel admittedly, but I'm extremely confused as to why the shout factory release coming with DVD copies of the film matters. I mean if the argument is not everyone has a blu-ray player, I'd argue that if you were spending as much as the Bruce Lee Legacy Collection is currently listed on eBay, you would probably benefit more from just buying a cheap blu-ray player and the criterion blu-ray box set instead.
But maybe I'm missing something, care to elaborate?
Hi Steven thanks for your comment, more than anything the point was to try and be as comprehensive as possible when describing the contents of each boxed set as best as I could. Not necessarily an argument or debate to be made but rather being informative as to what each boxed set comes with so people can decide which boxed set they would rather own and what their money would be buying. It would be up to them preference wise if they don’t have a bluray or if they would like dvds to be companions to their blurays or simply buying the blurays.

@@JD7Videos Yeah, I've heard rumors that the removal of the dislike counter is actually a big factor as to why. Allegedly, the change impacted the website's base code. This is a bit technical, but if true, it's not entirely unheard of for glitches like that to happen. Technically, it could be possible for basic code to be changed without having any negative impact whatsoever, but it certainly can lead to problematic issues. It could potentially be so bad, not just base code, but code all across the website would have be altered to account for the change.
But like I said, this isn't confirmed, it could just be complete coincidence after all. Just something to keep in mind.
I promise you this Arrow collection coming out soon will be the very last Bruce Lee set I ever purchase.. I have them all and some look Ok as an improved transfer but this Arrow set looks restored the best. So much wasted money and I'm done with it already.
I understand, I just can’t bring myself to dole out anymore money towards the films currently. There’s only so many times I can rebuy the same series, Rocky, Bruce lee, Star wars before I feel a sense of diminishing returns. Maybe if they reveal a release for the US I’ll consider it but until them I’m out on it. Thank you for the comment!

GAME OF DEATH 2 / TOWER OF DEATH absolutely should be in all of these sets. It's a pretty major piece of context regarding Lee's posthumous career AND more importantly the mindset of the Hong Kong industry at the time, a philosophy of 'if it worked before, keep doing it at all costs' that carried their film business well into the early 2000's before pandering to the Mainland market ultimately robbed true Hong Kong cinema of nearly everything that made it unique. GOD2 is shameless, even tasteless, in how it uses earlier Lee footage to cash in on his legacy so many years after his death, but nonetheless unlike the onslaught of movies featuring the Lee clones, this one DOES feature the most footage of him outside of his own pictures, and is thus important to an overall understanding of how long-lived his impact was in Hong Kong itself, and the lengths to which his own studio was willing to go to bleed more money from his legacy. Beyond that, if GOD2 was made as a standard martial arts picture without a single frame of or reference to Lee, it would still be an OK little action picture in terms of story and action choreography, and very much representative of similar pictures being made at the time. Cheers.
When you put it into context as this, I can certainly see where you’re coming from but overall it is in terrible taste, I can barely stand to watch G.O.D. 1 because of the fact they used his literal funeral to produce the film and basically did away with his original concepts, aside from that I feel like the documentary Golden Harvest made at the time of his passing was even worse, it was like they were paparazzi sticking the cameras into all of Bruce’s family’s vulnerable moments shortly after his passing. @@JD7Videos There's certainly no disputing that what they did was in bad taste, especially to westerners, although GOD1 wasn't the only film (over the years) to use the funeral footage as you note, only the highest-profile production, and probably the most offensive because the footage was used to support the death of a 'Billy Lo' in the film, rather than as part of a 'tribute' as in GOD2 (depending on which version one watches; there are at least three).
In fact, at the time of Lee's death it wasn't uncommon for famous HK people (not just actors) to have very public memorial ceremonies, with open viewings of the body, paparazzi galore etc. (actually, that was common in other cultures, too). His wife and kids couldn't have liked that, but the cultural expectations probably gave them no other option. That aspect on its own wasn't considered bad taste in the Hong Kong of the era. Exploiting it in a film like GOD1 several years later was undeniably questionable, but even that wasn't particularly scandalous, locally, at the time because they'd been exploiting Lee's legacy (via the clones) for years; the moral outrage came largely from the west in the ensuing years, and persists to this day, with each new generation that 'discovers' GOD1+2 voicing their shock while rarely placing them within the greater context of showy, freewheeling, anything-goes Hong Kong culture at the time, in which it makes a lot more sense despite the obviously crass nature. Again, those are the reasons that both should be included in any Bruce Lee collection; neither outshines his 'official' films, but both provide fascinating, troubling codas to his life and career.
Criterion probably could've done more to contextualize those aspects via commentaries or interviews for BOTH GOD1 and GOD2 instead of just the first one, but it sounds like they simply chose to include the latter for its historical significance and let viewers figure that one out for themselves, which I think robs them of the bigger picture. The old Fox set (shiny blue box) did the same thing, as did it's Hong Kong counterpart, although the latter at least included the HK version of Enter The Dragon.

Wow I never realized the extent of the normalcy it had in culture, I think you’re spot on as well they did use Bruce’s popularity to their advantage always, a star of his caliber wouldn’t just stop being relevant despite his passing even today people are still tapping into some of his myths and life, just look at random films such as Birth of the Dragon taking artistic liberties to new heights with little or no historical accuracy. I agree criterion’s inclusion of GOD 2 definitely sparks my interest of its inclusion even if it came across crudely in my video! Thanks for the great dialogue!
@@JD7Videos I actually saw Birth of the Dragon at TIFF. Something seemed off about the whole concept of it (especially a white guy being the main character in a film with that title!) before I went in, but it was a rush ticket and it was playing next to a theatre that I'd just left. I just couldn't believe that they still felt a borderline 'magical Asian' movie would still be a good sell in 2018.
Another shit version of the Lee legacy is the TV series 'The Legend Of Bruce Lee' from Mainland China (as if they had ANYTHING to do with his legacy). 50 episodes of constant inaccuracies and barely subtle pro-China propaganda, as if they "gave" him to the world. Frankly, it's probably just as offensive as either GOD films because it was made in a supposedly more enlightened age. But hey, Mainland China is like an alternate reality at the best of times; no surprise they'd do the same with a Bruce Lee series.
Another needless cash-in on Lee's life was the documentary 'I Am Bruce Lee' from a few years ago. It's not bad or disrespectful, per se, but it's pretty pointless because it uses tons of footage of Lee to background a bunch of relative nobodies and MMA meat-heads fawning over how much he "meant" to them even though they're all far too young to have ever met him. It's basically "I watched his movies or read his book and got inspired". All super-positive and blatantly self-serving.
I'm sure there are other opportunists out there who've made good cash exploiting Lee's legacy. Sadly, this kind of coat-tail riding will go on forever . . .

Actually, there is a 7-disc version of the Ultimate collection boxset(blue box) that does include Enter the Dragon as well as Tower of Death/GOD 2.
So I guess technically the Criterion boxset isnt the first boxset to feature all of his films including ETD?

It may have been region based? Not sure, but I do own it and its not region restricted. It can be played on any dvd player.
Presentation is pretty much the exact DVD set like the Ultimate collection boxset you mentioned in the video except it includes Enter the Dragon and a bonus content disc(Which has the movie trailers of all the films, photo stills, game of death outtakes, and some old asian celeb interviews like Sammo Hung and so forth.
So 7 disc instead of 5 disc.
It has the option of either an english or Chinese? menu.
Only thing is, I believe most the films are in Cantonese and mandarin dubs only(even enter the dragon). The exceptions being Game of Death 1 and 2. Those are only in English.
And Enter the Dragon is the full version, not the theatrical version. As well as having the Golden Harvest/Hong Kong opening credits( Thats similar to the opening credits of his first 3 films) and not the US opening credits version where you see Jim Kelly and John saxon arriving in hong kong(which is a bonus feature on the bonus content disc as an 'alternate' ETD opening).
Damn, it’s always outside the USA that gets awesome releases/boxed sets half the time, I’d say this one is one of those times too, but luckily we have this box set too. Not gonna lie I’m a bit biased to this newest release because it’s criterion, even with some of the better supplements not included, but that is definitely something worth noting on that release’s end! TBH I wasn’t thrilled at first, the pop art style that they use is okay, but they could have done something a bit less funky and given a better presentation, but CC has been on that pop art kick for awhile and I’m sure they wanted to make it pop for better or worse
