The new 4k Arrow bruce lee collection ,has the extended madarin cut of the big boss ,and is 10 mins longer and the GOD has the missing log fight footage in the flim ,,i pre ordered mine direct from Arrow video ,which is realeased on the 17 th july , but , expensive,i paid 124 pounds for the yellow exclusive set and get 10 discs ,,the other 2 are the red boxsets 😊

I am very happy with the this set. The audio is greatly improved over the individual Shout Factory collector edition releases which I also own. I also feel that the new 2K transfer of Enter the Dragon improves on the 2013 40th anniversary blu-ray by Warner Brothers; the framing is actually correct and the colors are better on the Criterion restoration.
Do the DVDs have the original Cantonese Soundtrack, with Brice's screams in tact?

Big Boss is such a great film, has the qualitys of a western but with awesome Bruce Lee moves. I love when he thinks about the promise he made his mother before he fights. Funny stuff
Hi Heath! I had the set delivered yesterday as well. I am really impressed thus far. I watched "The Big Boss" and all included supplements on disc 1 last night. It was an absolute treat. I expect that I will get through discs 2-5 in the coming week, and then of course make my way to the two supplementary discs after that. The overall presentation of the set itself is great. I absolutely love the included magazine with the whole 70's aesthetic. It's hard to find any areas of critique for Criterion. They seem to have knocked this one out of the park. Thanks for the great coverage, and I hope you enjoy your set!

So, I'm enjoying my copy right now. Finished watching the Big Boss & the new interview with Matthew Polly. The rest of the special features are the same ones on The Legacy Collection & Shout Select sets. So - I do think my collection of Bruce Lee sets are finally complete. I have The Legacy Collection from Shout & the Shout Selects (which the only Shout Select I really need to keep is Game of Death because it includes the Mandarin & Japanese releases of the movie & I'm keeping the Legacy Collection because of the book & the 3 special feature loaded DVDs included in the collection), The Master Collection from MediumRare entertainment in the UK (completely different special features & commentaries then the Shout/Criterion sets) & finally - the Legendary Collection from Kam & Ronson in Hong Kong. Also, finally - if you're a true Bruce Lee fan - you need to own the 2007 Blu-ray of Enter the Dragon. It has the documentary - A Warriors Journey - narrated by George Takei of Star Trek fame. And it's the only way to get that documentary.
I hope this comment helps those that are trying to get every special feature for Bruce Lee.

Mine arrived over the weekend and I pulled it apart and marveled at it the same way you just did. I'm going to love rewatching all these movies, especially since I've never seen them on blu ray. I've been watching them on DVD for years, so I'm pumped.
Oh man I almost bought this, then, Scream Factory blew out that limited Friday the 13th. Ultimately I’d watch these Bruce Lee movies more but I know this set will be around and the Jason set is super limited. I’ll hopefully get this during the fall B&N sale. There are so many premium catalog releases coming in the next six months my wallet is crying, but I must have this. Bruce Lee movies are the Sunday afternoons of my childhood.

I didn't have much exposure to Bruce Lee beyond Enter the Dragon and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story before I bought this set, and I'm blown away. So glad I decided to make the investment!
Nice! The martial arts movie as we know it really is the result of Bruce Lee and his impact. There had been martial arts movies before him, but he put such a stamp on it and so much style into it, it's never been the same since. Sonny Chiba, Jackie Chan, Jim Kelly, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, they all stand in the shadow of Bruce. He was first, and those movies are so fun.
Great review of a master Bruce I've loved him ever since i was a little kid you certainly helped me make up my mind as wasn't sure which set to get..I've owned the vhs set forever now and it's time i got myself upto date with today's technology I'm ordering it soon as I've written this oh man I'm going to enjoy these when they arrive thanks man

Is Big Boss the uncut version?!
Physical media is better than it's ever been. A lot of people may prefer digital movies because of their convenience. However, collectors of physical movies and those that appreciate having something tangible on their shelves will always lean towards buying physical discs. Physical media is truly a beautiful thing and it's something that I'm more than happy to support. With that aside, the Bruce Lee Greatest Hits collection is amazing, especially since it's on sale at Barnes & Noble. The presentation and quality that Criterion have given this collection is truly deserving for a legend like Bruce Lee. Unfortunately, the only movie that I've seen (and I have seen it numerous times), is Enter the Dragon. It's a phenomenal experience for sure. Perhaps, I can take advantage of the sale that's going on at Barnes & Noble while it lasts. Otherwise, thanks as always Heath for the great video. I appreciate the hard work. Keep it up!

Just got my copy. Couldn't pass it up with the Criterion Collection sale from Barnes & Noble. So happy to get the whole Godzilla Showa Era collection at half price as well. Hope they might give Jackie Chan the Criterion treatment like they did Bruce Lee. Would love to own both Drunken Masters on Blu-ray.

Great release. and I can finally walk she's in HD with the original language it appears. I only have the DVD collection.I'm kind of pissed off because I paid $89 to preorder it from criterion and you can get it here for 62 but it is on backorder. The majority of criterion releases I don't want cuz they're old movies and honestly they're way overpriced. which kind of makes them over rated they do have good transfers and special features but really I feel like they're just a gouging old people since most of movies are old. I mean they should be releasing these at 20 to $25 if it's a set of movies maybe 30. I mean when the average Blu-ray of an old movie is 10 to $15. And most shout factory leases are 20 to 25. I only found two that I wanted. The scanners trilogy. And I had lady snow collection in my cart but then it said it wasn't available which pissing me off because if you put in your f****** cart it should mean that you've secured it. of course I want to look through the rest of the movies and make sure I've bought enough to get free shipping. I've had this happen in the past. basically these online stores are greedy and they don't want to miss selling it to somebody else even though you already have it in your f****** cart because they're not sure you're going to buy it.
Just wanted to hit a couple of these points because I think they represent the way a lot of folks may feel about Criterion (including how I used to feel too). As a fan of lots of old movies, I hear what you're saying, but I wanted to offer another perspective: Criterion almost always does a new scan/transfer for everything they put out, commission new extras, like commentaries, documentaries, and written essays, and they package their stuff like nobody's business. That costs a lot of money, so they're investing in the product in a way that not many companies are. For a couple of decades now, the Criterion stamp meant that you were getting the absolute best of the best, quality wise and movie wise. It's a shame to me that Shout Factory has become some sort of golden standard (they're fine, but they put out lots of bare bones releases). Criterion no doubt costs a lot more than many other releases, but it's partly because they're putting more into them. This is also why these half price sales are big news when they hit a few times a year. It brings the average Criterion release down to 15-20 dollars. I hope you check out some of those old movies! You may be surprised how well you connect with them!

I remember that they re-released all of those films (except ENTER THE DRAGON) with the release of GAME OF DEATH. There was something special about seeing a Bruce Lee fight on the big screen in the seventies. It's hard to explain. But he put the audience into a kind of spell. I also remember my older brother had to take me to the films, because they were rated "R". I ordered my set from Barnes & Noble last week. I think my first watch with be with the old school dubs. So, I can relive that theatrical experience.
I completely understand. I'm usually a stickler for watching movies in the language that they were produced in, but those dubs are so iconic, and some of those English audio tracks have seventies-tastic music that isn't in the original. Like with the Bela Lugosi Dracula vs the Spanish-language version, I sometimes find myself wishing I could combine elements into one super version.

This set is awesome! But did you notice on both versions of Enter The Dragon an audio snippet (the mono) toward the end of the fight between Roper and Bolo? Right after Roper kicks Bolo in the...and the camera pans on Han, there's a bit of audio that sounds like someone getting hit and knocked to the ground, then the camera pans back to Bolo passing out. I never noticed that in any other releases. I don't know if it's a glitch or if Roper hits Bolo off screen. I saw it on the Special Edition version, then checked the Theatrical Version and it's on both. I wonder if anyone else noticed that.
I thought I could resist this because I already have the 5 movies on DVD & previous Blu releases... but this is too sweeeet! I picked it up at Barnes & Noble yesterday. Thanks for the preview, now I can blame you for my weakness. LOL!!

Dubbed in English I found the series on UA-cam there I s one in Chinese and English. I agree, he was one of a kind, and no one else will ever be the right person at the right time with all that charisma. Absolute icon, and we're still talking about him 50 years later.

That's 100 percent up to you, but I think so, because Criterion has done new remasters for all the movies that now look even better than they did before. That Legacy Collection set was the subject of a lot of controversy and replacement discs.

I would be interested to see you compare this to the Shout Factory/Warner Blu-Rays. I have those and want to be sure the upgrades are worth it.
None of my discs were the latest transfers from those companies, so it wouldn’t be the best comparison, since both Warner and Shout cleaned up all the movies further after the editions I own.
Cereal At Midnight my Shout Factory discs are from 4K transfers but I have the older Warner Blu-Ray.

Just what I want it to be for the first time ever done this way all together in one box nothing can ever be done any better than this one ever with out it being the same thing has this one is and it covers everything and the box is a one of a kind in yellow and black that it stands out from the rest that have been done and could be done

No, it's all black inside the slipcase, but that would have been cool!
You may already be aware of this series from 1971, Longstreet? It starred James Franciscus, about a blind insurance investigator, and despite my description, it's actually quite good, but only has maybe 20 episodes. The reason I bring it up, Bruce Lee was featured pretty prominently in 3 or 4 episodes. He teaches the blind investigator martial arts. You can find episodes on UA-cam, but I believe there was a DVD release a few years ago. Just thought I would mention it, thanks for the video.

Hi Heath. Great review! I was on the fence for this set because my Criterion wish list is long with other items in top spots for the sale. I work on a wish list and then just realize I want all of the Criterion releases. Your review helped bumped this set to the top so I ordered today. I got this set too, and I LOVE it, but I also have so many concerns about the lack of certain special features not being ported over from the SF & WB releases (which I also own).
I've seen the comparisons about the quality (which is stellar), but it looks like Criterion didn't include many extras from those previous releases. Rights issues?

Probably, but the transfer quality of a Criterion release is enough to make me cave.
@ Strumm Dogg I would guess rights issues, for sure. Either they were off the table for licensing, or they were cost-prohibitive. With the documentary on Warner's Enter the Dragon Blu-ray, I suspect it wasn't even an option. I kind of doubt that all this stuff will ever be included in a single box set, just due to the nature of licensing and the lower physical media sales numbers these days. Just more for us to collect!

Does Game Of Death have the 2 guys going up the tower with Bruce and the part where Bruce punches out the windows because it hurts Kareem's eyes? I'm looking for that version of the movie and not in some deleted features or bonus footage spot? Please someone respond.

Picked it up today 50% off at B&N! I have the Shout Factory blus but didn't have Enter the Dragon on blu, between this and the Godzilla set Criterion really kicking a___s this past year! Plus for the 1st time in HD we get the theatrical version of ETD! Only thing missing was the Green Hornet TV series, that really needs a home video release!
I have the old hong kong blue ray set. Only enter the dragon was in chinese and bought it seperately. This studio sould stop put regions on their discs becouse their releases are unique. Or put all 3 regions on every disc XD
Where's the true 4k sound and picture, the poster is bent, the package seems rushed and lazy, Bruce deserves far better
I still don't get why they include Game of Death when isn't what Bruce Lee wanted. IMO it's insulting to his memory
They included it as a special feature plus they talk about Bruce sploitation in general. I think they just picked it as the best of Bruce sploitation plus it's probably the only place to find it with a good transfer on Blu-ray. I would just consider it a free movie.
If hey hadn’t, people would have complained. It’s kind of the last chapter in the filmography, controversial though it is.
They included the full 40 minute pagoda sequence they shot before he went off to make Enter The Dragon, which they only used bits of in the original Game Of Death release. It's been reconstructed from previously lost footage and has been released before - in the Hong Kong Legends DVD release for example, and deserves to be seen as part of his legacy in this set.
Had Bruce Lee not died, his version of Game Of Death would've been included in this blu-ray box set the way it should've been. The 1978 version wouldn't exist and I totally wish that was the case.
@@jerelminter had Bruce Lee not died he probably would have gone on to make another 50-60 movies and we wouldn't be having this conversation. We all wish he'd not died but sadly he did, and he left us with this terribly small but very important body of work, and we should appreciate not only his movies but his legacy and influence.
Guys, I have the 2-disc special edition DVD of Enter the Dragon with book packaging (very nice.) I also have the DVD Ultimate Collection box without Enter the Dragon. Now, is this criterion box set worth $116??? That's how much it's going for on Amazon.ca right now. Ughhh, I'm so tempted but it's so pricey what the heck. It's be a no brainer for me if it was in the $60-$70 range.

hi can you tell me if these are proper 4k as i own a oppo 203 4k player its not region free so worried that the disc wont play i know proper 4k hdr films are region free but 1080p upscale region A discS wont play on uk players please let me know thanks
They’re Blu-rays, not 4K UHD. Some of the restorations come from 4K scans, but they’re downsampled down to 1080p.

Criterion is top of the line.
Picture quality is very good but the sound is bad. Had to raise up the volume on my tv to the max. Good if you own a surround sound system or a sound bar but not good just coming off the tv speaker.
Most of the audio is vintage mono, which is how it was created. Given that these are low-budget movies from China in the seventies, that's baked into the source. Enter the Dragon has a 5.1 surround mix, but it was also a major studio picture from Warner Brothers. Also wondering if you've noticed the lower audio on all of the audio tracks, or just English dub. Some of these movies have as many as four language tracks, including the languages in which they were filmed.

There are only four bruce lee movies, not 5, game of death is not a bruce lee movie, it is an abomination to his legacy and should not be a part of this set.
Hot take, Jinxy. You're suggesting that they should have left out a movie with some of the most iconic Bruce Lee fight scenes of his whole career. Did he finish it? No, but he's sure in it, and considering what happened behind the scenes, there'd be riots in the streets if it hadn't been included. It's a minority opinion. @@CerealAtMidnight that is exactly what I am suggesting. The whole movie is an insult to Bruce Lee. Just include the documentary that has the footage on, like the enter the dragon special edition dvd does.
They did that too. Good for Criterion for giving fans the choice of watching Game of Death in whichever form they choose.
@@CerealAtMidnight But its not a Bruce Lee movie, its nothing but a shameless cash grab pissing all over his name and is not a bruce movie, and not even slightly resembling his original vision. Any true bruce lee fan wouldn't give that piece of trash film the time of day.
Some things are preserved for posterity, as a representative of film history and how it happened. Criterion has preserved both the original footage of Lee AND the finished, released version for historical accuracy. We are anti-censorship, and only including Bruce's footage and not the finished product that millions of Bruce Lee fans saw in theaters in the seventies is awfully close to censorship.
