Russia has been making .308 rifles for 25+ years. They use .308 in newer designs due to simpler mag designs/feeding from the rimless cartridge, while the rimmed 7.62x54R has no issue feeding from belts, which is why even their newest belt-fed machine gun designs still use it. A second factor is the unlimited supply of match grade ammo for the hunting and sporting sectors of the civilian firearms market, which allows Russia to get a quick logistic stream of precision ammo to their forces, removing the need to retool their extensive 7.62x54R production lines, all while new domestic 7.62x51 production lines can be formed.

@@CH3TN1K313 damn. That's a concise explanation. I have an ar10 that has never had brass. Only wolf and silver bear. So, I speak only to what I know. I have seen some photos of Russian special ops units using HK417s as dmr type rifles. I'm pretty sure I have also seen them with HK416s in the past but they could have just been using them for photo ops. Kinda funny to see such things. It's really hard to deny that the AK platform is obsolete in some ways, particularly as far as modularity is concerned and as far as mounting ir devices for night vision use. It can be done with the zenitco rails but it's quite expensive and requires extensive modification where as the original KAC rails for the m4A1 were very easy to install and hold zero very well.

Unites made of prisoners dont have any freedom or money to purchase equipment as they are used to "test" enemy positions. Elite Wagner forces have alot of freedom of choosing equipment they want to carry and have alot of money to purchase what they want since they are well paid.

yep the whole setup is a bit odd, it looks like they dragged out their air rifle gadgets from the 90s for a propaganda film. I'm sure ukraine will be happy sticking with .50s or lapua (especially the Accuracy international rifles they have) and thermal spotting scopes. Also it seems like it took this conflict for everybody to finally realise that dragunov SVDs are not a bloody sniper rifle, although russia doesnt seem to have worked out the difference between designated marksman and sniper rifles judging by this (about 1000 metres range is the difference). A very nice designated marksman rifle in its day but they are pretty much obsolete now. In fact I would love to see a video on their use in this conflict.
