      Just assume the sky is a thermal camera and act accordingly.
      You are under enemy surveillance at all times, and you need good IR clothing to stand a chance of going undetected in the open.
      I'd personally use drones only from a safe location with multiple launch spots.
      Heck, automate carrying the drones out to launch spots with other land based drones, so human flesh isn't ever presented as a viable target to the enemy.
      That's the future, no more tanks with human crew, everything will be anti drone defences, human safety measures, whilst offense will powerful drones in large quantities.
      Any human army that has to fight what drones are fast becoming, will stand no chance at all. You'd either need some form of electromagnetic weaponry, or drones of your own.

    My guess is they will only unlock their true potential in combination with at least partial autonomy. The fact that they are ground based combined with enemy EW and the relative slow speed forces the operator to stay pretty close, compared to flying drones.

    • @qdaniele97
      @qdaniele97 5 місяців тому +1

      They already have partial autonomy. With the remote you only tell it to go forward, back, left or right, but it's the robot that then decides what steps it should take to go in that direction without tripping, falling down a stair or loosing balance constantly. And if it happens to fall it can right itself on its own.

Would be useful for walking into enemy trenches and dugouts or buildings with much more accuracy than an FPV, Especially at night when it's both harder to fly and harder to spot incoming drone dogs. The most expensive portion is the LiDAR. You could replace the LiDAR with a stereo (3D) camera and dramatically reduce the cost (you can get a good 3D camera for around $300USD). You can buy all the stepper motors of of sites like AliBaba or Octopart super cheap. The battery is just regular Lithium cells (you could use an eBike/scooter or even EV car version). Then, the second most expensive part is a computer that can process the Point Cloud from the 3D imaging (either LiDar or stereo cam). A decent small dev board with an Intel/AMD processor (or better something like a dev board with an lowend nVIDIA GPU) would work. You can get those for $200USD to $400USD. As for the robot body etc, that is just basic machining of Aluminum or Steel stock. It would be helpful to have a decent GPS/GLONASS receiver, but not absolutely necessary.
      If you didn't have to pay for labor or software licenses, you could probably build one for about $600USD - $700USD, especially if you were doing large quantities.

    If battery life allowed and it could move slowly enough and be quiet enough, I could imagine a camouflaged dog move up on an enemy position by moving just slowly enough that you don't notice any movement, and then get into a perfect position to observe to help plan for an attack.

    An RPG or gun mount would synergize better with a robot dog than a drone since it's a more stable mount. Robots are really necessary for fighting an enemy in buildings or entrenched in tunnels where drones are just impractical.

    I wonder what potential these dogs have for de-mining purposes? Like could you just send 50 specilized demining dogs to clear a path through a minefield instead of sending a MICLIC vehicle?

    • @johnrose411
      @johnrose411 5 місяців тому +1

      You could just automate one of the pre existing mine clearing devices and it’d be cheaper than these robots. I believe each one is 60k but that was 2 years ago. So 3,000,000 VS 83,000 (For the M58 MICLIC).

    These seem like they could be used by small supporting elements of an assault squad in certain terrain. They could resupply ammo, grenades and medical equipment between pinned down squad elements during an active battle.
    Just have it follow you/carry it with you and when needed you can send a pack of grenades to the guys clearing trenches,
    or send extra bandages, blood and tourniqets to a medic that is taking care of several wounded men.

    Tactical recon is IMO the most likely role these dogs, at least at first. That could be both out of sight of accompanying (human) infantry or under cover of friendly weapons. I can imagine russian troops hiding or leaving if they see one of these bots due to ukrainians providing covering fire for their dog. There have apparently been cases in Iraq of US troops showing up at a repair depot with a box, asking if their shot up packbot the packbot is fixable. The US troops appreciated the packbots' taking hostile fire and provided (accurate) covering fire.
    In terms of explosives, one thing that could be added is a powered mount (pan/tilt) with a camera and an explosively formed projectile warhead. This would turn the dog into a mobile command detonated off route antivehicle mine as long as the battery holds out.
