i use the other version of it and its always in my bag, for a few reasons it works amazingly with any prims effects i use. has replaced my 50mm f1.4 for the Z setup
I just ordered this lens as I couldn't find any other lens that could be an everyday carry with the Zf. The plastic mount is hydrophobic so it actually can resist water quite well vs a metal mount. I'd still transplant a metal mount (with gasket) from an FTZ adapter though if I can find one cheap. Quite excited to receive the lens. I've been using the Zf with an adapted Minolta 58mm. While the images are quite nice, the combo just doesn't give me the "everyday carry" vibe I had with the Fujifilm X-E4 + 18mm f2. I'm hoping this lens will give me that feeling again.
@@dlovisuals It is. Even with my current lenses, I do enjoy it quite a lot. Hoping the 40mm would make it my daily snapper. If I had Sony glass, I would definitely grab an AF adapter. So many choices in the Sony system right now especially their 1.4 GM primes. :)
@@dlovisuals Saw that too and saw other users use their 50mm 1.2 GMs on their Nikons. Pretty neat stuff especially how small the Sony lens is compared to the Nikon 50mm 1.2. I just despise the size of that thing haha. If you've got Sony lenses, it could be a worthy investment.
It's a great lens. At first I didn't expect much of it, but it's a joy to use and I've shot some lovely pics with it Nice to see more folks enjoying this
@@pjc3163 yeah! It becomes a 60mm on DX, perfect for some portraits. Kinda wish Nikon would make a 65mm f/2 like Sigma. It’s def an interesting focal length.
Three cheers for the character lens! It's a great little lens for a great little price. Lovely bokeh, nice falloff wide open. If you want metal lenses for your Zf, my fave 40mm is the Voigtländer 40mm f2 (which is F mount, with the FTZ adapter). Voigtländer also makes a 40mm f1.2 native for Z mount, and it does have a nice bloom wide open, but I've found the bokeh is a little onion-ringy, and the falloff just a hair too busy for my personal taste. But you can't go wrong with that 40 in your hands right now; plastic or not, it's a great little lens 😊
I like flaws in a lens but I truly despised the photo quality of that lens and traded in for a voigtlander 40mm 1.2. But it is weather sealed. Something to do with how they designed it completely out of plastic they were able to make it weather sealed without using any gaskets. And I had it in a very heavy Florida rain once without issues so it worked. I really did want to like it since it did look so good on my camera. Just couldn’t get over how strange the rendering was at times.
Thanks for the correction on the lens being weather resistant. I can totally see how this lens isn’t for everyone. I think for me, it’s refreshing to use since a lot of the lenses I have reviewed over the last year have all been super clinical. Also that voitlander has been my radar for sometime. Love to hear your thoughts on it.
@@dlovisuals The voigtlander is something truly unique and special. From 1.2 to 1.6 you get a special kind of rendering that isn’t clinical but old school look. But the photos still easily sharpen and the bokeh is the chef’s kiss! I have these Nikon Z lenses and haven’t removed it from my ZF in almost 4 months I enjoy this lens so much. Also on the ZF you get full face detection and tracking and a nice green box when you get into focus even though it’s a manual lens. They made it truly a pleasure to use a manual lens.
It’s fun to take out my ZF with the 40m on it. It’s like “hey, no pressure”. If I want perfection then the Z8 comes out with my 50mm 1.8. (Time to make money!😂)
It is a nifty fifty in a 40 length. As for those who snoot the plastic mount? Nikon guru Thom Hogan points out that it a very high end material that will actually help preserve the camera’s mount due to the lack of metal to metal abrasion when changing lenses. Anyway It is a fine all around everyday carry mounted on my Z6.
Yeah I agree. I think many people hear the word plastic and the immediately think of cheap lens. Maybe 10-15 years ago with the OG Nifty Fifty but certainly not the case with this lens.
@@Copainbig yeah, it was brought to my attention and I corrected that in my 28mm f/2.8 SE review, where I mention that the 40mm f/2 is dust and moisture resistant.

Still use mine 😊. I think they still make those (if I'm wrong, they're easy to find on eBay)
@@WolfgangWhyte that’s awesome! The OG plastic fantastic was my first prime lens. Man that takes me back to my early days as a photographer.
