I’m new to your channel and a long time Nikon user. I work primarily with a Z9 since it came out and am very happy with the system. Only gripes is that it syncs with flash up to 1/200 when before my D810’s used to sync at 1/320s which was great. I hate using HSS but resort to it when pressed. Now, let me say why I’ve posted. For my family and travel photography I want a lighter body that’s fun to use and light enough to take everywhere. For that I’ve kept a D810 and use old vintage Nikkor glass, mostly a 35mm Ai f/2.8. It’s all manual focusing though, which kind of adds to the experience but there are times that I wish I had an autofocus which is as small and light. I’ve got Loads of other f-mount Nikon lenses but they’re all so heavy that they don’t inspire me to use them that much. I looked into the Leica Q series but I think they’re too expensive. Like the feel they give though so they’re always at the back of my mind. Also looked at the Nikon Zf and was tempted but having to bulk it that much with such a ghastly long adapter would go against my logics. It’s not an option for me. What I wish is that Sigma starts to make Z-mount versions of their Contemporary line of lenses. Now that is what Nikon should be making. I’m particularly interested in the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN contemporary lens. The lens is currently available for Sony and I’m really astonished in that you haven’t looked at it yet knowing that you love that vintage feel, especially knowing that these Sigma contemporary lenses have aperture rings on their lenses! It would be great if you get one to try out on the Zf and adapt it with small adapter ring of yours. It just might sway me into getting a Zf myself to replace the old D810.
First time I picked it up in store I genuinely disliked it. Gave it another shot a few weeks later and then went all in. Much happier with it than I ever was with the X-T5.

Excellent, well written and produced review. The Zf opens so many exciting options to experiment with great MF and vintage lenses. I appreciate your sharing your experiences so far and hope you will post regular updates describing other lenses and adapters you've found interesting on this wonderful camera. I'd love to hear more about how well the Megadap or Neewer Sony FE to Z adapters work with the compact Sigma DG-DN i-series FE lenses on the Zf (losing auto distortion corrections in camera) , since Nikon appears not to want to bring back classic clicky aperture rings on their new native Z glass. I don't have the Zf yet but its tactile retro design seems to enhance engagement and fun factor that can inspire one to get out and shoot more often, while also being very versatile. New subscriber.
Thanks for the kind words! I do want to try sigma compact lenses on this system since i love having an aperture ring. Manually focusing on all manual glass has been so fun.
@@luischavezphoto I'm looking forward to your future videos on your experiences with this camera. Re. adapted manual lenses, I noticed you used both the Thypoch 28mm f/1.5 MF and the Nikon Z 28mm f/2.7 AF lenses. I'd love to see a video comparing these lenses on the ZF. I don't know if I need such a fast lens for bokeh, so I'm mostly wondering how the sharpness and overall IQ compares, especially for far landscapes and medium- distance focus. And are you using the Clever Supply sling mostly to carry the ZF and a couple lenses on your personal walks? Love your channel.
I've had my ZF for about 3-4 months now and I love it! I especially love the Voigtlander 40mm 1.2 for Z mount, just an incredible lens. Also highly recommend the Nikon 26mm 2.8 pancake if you want an X100V type experience. Its loud but so tiny and the color is great. I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on that Thypoch 28mm. I've been eyeing that lens ever since Samuel Streetlife made a video on it and I have been so tempted to pick it up.
Contemplating the ZF and 40mm combo. I had a Leica Q2 and sold it for video equipment (lol). I'd like to have something that's similar in ergonomics, AKA it slows me and actually has some style to it. I love the idea of 24mp and good low light. 40mm feels like a great sweet spot for capturing anything documentary/candid.
you can edit this nikon profile and take pictures in RAW. When you open the images in Nikon NX Studio, the program will load them with the profile you used to take them. In this program you can make changes to the raw file, export it to TIF and in Lr mirc colour RAW and Tif as it was taken in camera and edited in NX studio.

Would love to see a video or thoughts on the performance of Sony lenses on the ZF especially the Sony Zeiss 35 2.8. I think that lens looks great on the ZF but curious about the performance.
Really great video, gracias Luis. I went to a Nikon store a couple of months ago and I really didn't like the ergonomics but I'm reconsidering the camera now after seeing many people laud it's versatility. Can you tell me how big of a difference the grips make? My original impression was like a 2/10 ergonomically but if the grips really save the experience then maybe I can buy the ZF and leave the grip permanently on? I also have smell/medium sized hands.
From my understanding, the Z6III is very similar to the ZF in terms of features so going that route might be better long term! The small rig grip is really comfortable on the ZF as well.
Love my Zf, I also dislike the zoom button position, just not where your thumb is naturally. I also map it to AEL button but wish I could map it to the Info button instead.
There are a ton of options to customize your picture controls. Just use the nx studio and copy the picture control onto your SD card. Or in future use the nikon imaging cloud. Currently only possible with z6iii but it will come for the Zf.
Thanks for a great review. I’m also a pro and using two Sony s7iv. Do I need ZF def no do I want def yes. Trying to convince myself and wife that I need it:). Is the eye auto focus on par with Sony? Is it continuous auto focus? Thanks.
just got the ZF; and it does have a setting for Continuous Auto Focus. I was happy to see that there's something similar to sony's dynamic tracking where I half press the shutter to grab focus on a subject and then am able to re-compose while half pressing. For me, sony feels unbeatable, but I'm not unhappy with the ZF so far.
can you back button focus with the ZF? Even if you can map the button to do so, I'd be concerned about the placement to use it to do so. deal breaker for me if I can't
Hey great video brother ! Just curious what were your minor tweaks to the rich tone portrait color setting ? Have the same camera and loved your pictures thanks
@@artsilva that's maybe the fact if you are using Lightroom, but Capture One for example really implements grain to the different areas of an image. Darks/shadows have a different amount of grain compared to bright or overexposed areas! It looks much more realistic. Even different kinds of grain are available (soft/harsh/etc.)
Do you use any filters on this camera. I am just getting back and got a ZF a week ago and learning again. But wondering if you recommend any type of filters.
At the beginning of this year, I also bought a Zf and have been looking at Techart Pro TZM-02 AF Adapter Leica M Nikon Z version II, but have not bought it yet. It would be great if you could do a more detailed review of that.
What do you want to know? I have one on my Z6 (using it with my M-mount glass). What you should know is that it is not a quiet focus mechanism and it tends to hunt a little before hitting focus. So not the best for video. Sometimes it won't focus at all.. my solution is to adjust the manual focus on the lens to near focus.. focus on something close.. then back to infinity and it usually works. It's not foolproof, so I wouldn't use it for critical applications/paid work. I think it's best to compare it to medium format autofocus lenses in speed. I do think it will work a little bit better on the Zf, since that camera is so much better at hitting critical focus than the Z6. In any case, even with the Z6, my recommendation would be to get one if you have more than one or two (not too heavy) manual focus lenses that you want to pair it with. Also make sure not to hold your camera by the lens, since the whole lens moves and you don't want to over-exert the motors in the adapter. As long as you are fine with that, it's really cool experience. Oh and buy from somewhere that offers some kind of warranty.. some people have reported adapters breaking, but mine has been solid (knock on wood).
@@Renzsu thank you for your insights! I would like to use the adapter with the Voigtlander 75mmF1.5 for protraits, will have to take the plunge I think 🙂
great video, very informative. i didn't even know you could mount sony lenses to nikon so thats nice! my work has a bunch of sony kit but i dont like the sony raw files.
I'm comfortable with a light camera without grip. I'm comfortable with a heavy camera with a large grip. But I can't enjoy a heavy camera without grip, Zf is not what I expected from Nikon.
I found that not every time with all adaptors things work out well, in my case it did not. I have an issue with my FTZ2 adapter -- I love my Voigt 58/1.4 Nocton (F mount), I was using it previously with my Nikon DSLR, now I have adapted this lens on my ZF, but it turns out that, first, it made the focal length maybe 60mm, I have compared shooting from the same distance on both bodies, and it is a bit longer on the ZF with the adapter. The other negative and very annoying thing is that now I have to return a tiny bit the focus ring back from infinity for zone focusing, which slows shooting significantly. So ZF is great, my lens is great, but adapting it is a nightmare, so I might actually get either 40/1.2 or 50 APO native Voigtlanders, but not sure I will get the same results as with the 58/1.4 Noct.
I also got rid of my Q2 for the Nikon ZF and I have zero regrets. This camera has been so much fun to use. I also plan to get an adapter so I can use my Sigma glass on this camera. Great video as always brother!

Please do review the Techart TZM02. I'm very interested in getting one for my Zf so it would be great to get your thoughts on it.
working on it!
if you use the picture control website you can upload s-curves onto the camera via sd-card.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I do plan on making a dedicated lenses video in the future.
Can you share details of the leather camera strap?
Great video! Keep up the good work. The ZF will definitely be my next camera.
Does the manual focus confirmation and IBIS work when using the TechArt adapter or is it better to get a native z-mount Voigtlander lens for example?
which soft release button did you get? i ordered one for mine but its a bit small. yours look a bit bigger.
ps: i LOVE the Zf. i just got her few days ago. i only used D-SLR´s until now but havent really shot much the last couple of years. this thing made my excited again and i go out with her to take some shots every day. wesome little cam with lots of capabilities.
I’m not exactly sure but it was on Amazon! One of the first options.
Would love to see a video or thoughts on the performance of Sony lenses on the ZF especially the Sony Zeiss 35 2.8. I think that lens looks great on the ZF but curious about the performance.
on the B&W switch, it will use the latest B&W profile you used (Built in) I think you can edit and the values will go.
Yep! I love the black and white profile just wish I could add grain to it in camera but it’s a very minor grievance. Haha
Yes please do a review of the Techart adapter!
How does the image quality compares to the Sony?
Rich tone portrait is my favorite especially for the 8 bit video
Love my Zf, I also dislike the zoom button position, just not where your thumb is naturally. I also map it to AEL button but wish I could map it to the Info button instead.
Nice job on this video.
Regiont needing higher megapixel counts, why not select a smaller image size within the menu?
Yes please do a video about adapting lenses and the adapters 🙏
Photography should be fun! 👍🏾
Does the Thypoch Simera sharpen to infinity with standard adapters? Because I have heard that there is a problem with this.
I use the cheap dummy adapters so those have worked relatively fine for me but I do only use focus peaking so that’s the extent of my experience
There are a ton of options to customize your picture controls. Just use the nx studio and copy the picture control onto your SD card.
Or in future use the nikon imaging cloud. Currently only possible with z6iii but it will come for the Zf.
Is there a way to tweak in camera profiles like white balance, shadow and highlights, sharpness etc. for the zig?
Any solution for missing sensor shield?
I think the different is very minimal but I do trust the sony more. Mostly because ive used sony for so long.
can you back button focus with the ZF? Even if you can map the button to do so, I'd be concerned about the placement to use it to do so. deal breaker for me if I can't
Of course you can
if only it came in silver 😅😅😅
great video tho dude, was worth the wait and that A roll looking sooo nice 😮💨
You should make a petition to Nikon! 😂And thanks for watching.
Hey great video brother ! Just curious what were your minor tweaks to the rich tone portrait color setting ? Have the same camera and loved your pictures thanks
I’m going to make a tutorial soon!
You CAN add grain in post to your photos.
Yep! I do it all the time. Would be great to do it in camera but it’s a minor thing.
@@luischavezphoto In the end it's all the same; artificial grain overlay of sorts.
@@WorldinFastForward Like I said, you can do it in post, regardless of what editor you use, some different than others obviously
Hoping one day they update this camera to have a more photography first 3 way tilting screen like the z8.
yo love your videos as always! not photography related, but where did you get that green sweater from?
Are all of the images straight out of the camera or edited ?
Do you use any filters on this camera. I am just getting back and got a ZF a week ago and learning again. But wondering if you recommend any type of filters.
NDs and a circular polarizer for sure if you are going to shoot in bright daylight. There are other creative filters as well
I am making a dedicated accessories video but I mostly just use NDs when shooting video.
damm boi! always killing the reviews!
Always appreciate you man!
Great tips!
I definitely want to do a more detailed video about my experience with this particular adapter. Thanks for watching!
@@luischavezphoto looking forward to it
@@Renzsu thank you for your insights! I would like to use the adapter with the Voigtlander 75mmF1.5 for protraits, will have to take the plunge I think 🙂
What leather strap are you using?? 😍
It’s from clever supply!
great video, very informative. i didn't even know you could mount sony lenses to nikon so thats nice! my work has a bunch of sony kit but i dont like the sony raw files.
Glad I could help! I love the mounting my e mount glass on the ZF!
I want to sell my Fuji XT5 and get this camera. Only concern is weight. Is it heavy?
It’s definitely more heavy than the XT5 but I enjoyed using the ZF more
amazing and informative video
Thanks for watching!
Major fail for Nikon to not build Z lenses with aperture rings, even if it was just a couple of SE for this camera
Why don’t you just remap the front custom button if you’re happy with your auto white balance? There’s your extra button.
I'm comfortable with a light camera without grip. I'm comfortable with a heavy camera with a large grip. But I can't enjoy a heavy camera without grip, Zf is not what I expected from Nikon.

Third!
I don’t do any zone focusing on the ZF but I have heard others say similar things about it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
