- Arirang 아리랑 is by far the most popular folk song in both Koreas, often considered the unofficial national anthem of Korea and played at the Olympics as a common anthem. There are about 3,600 variations of 60 different versions of the song, all of which include a refrain similar to, "Arirang, arirang, arariyo (아리랑, 아리랑, 아라리요) It is estimated the song is more than 600 years old.
Arirang is included twice on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. South Korea successfully submitted the song for inclusion on the UNESCO list in 2012. North Korea also successfully submitted the song for inclusion in 2014. In 2015, the South Korean Cultural Heritage Administration added the song to its list of important intangible cultural assets.
I'm not Korean. But would like to see a united Korea in my lifetime.

Sorry for the late reply., This is the heart song of korea, Where men left for war , In koreas new war era, When japanese killed myeongseong empress and when literachy purge happened, People sang this, Nobody lnows where arirang came from, They sang it when they are sad, When they are happy and when they are hurt, But it is believed that one weeping woman sang this for her husband when he left to join kings army and then people who were cultivating used to sing this a lot. Now it is the song of the nation.

North Korean are more authentic and traditional. South Korea become more westernised and slowly losing her tradition. This is the same with many countries in the world.

What I realised about this particular song, that Every artist reflected their own thoughts while singing the song ,and this simple song has become extra ordinary by their own reflection of judgement...m it's like cooking a basic instant noodles which literally tastes different in different familymmit happened in my area.. whennwe shared our tiffin in school, everyone's maggi tasted different, I don't know how it's possible... But I guess hearts do matter in singing and cooking
