  • The Regiment arrived and their old Colours were paraded off. The new Colours were blessed and then presented by The Earl of Wessex Prince Edward. The new Colours will be on display for the first time on the 6th April at the Regiment's next change of guard at Buckingham Palace.

So, I'm an American veteran and a military historian. I honestly don't know why the presentation of new colors to a regiment is important, but I do know they need to be replaced every so often. This is clearly an honor for the Gibraltars [who almost have to be nicknamed 'The Rocks'], so congratulations to them.
    Stay safe, you lot.

The colours hold the battle honours of course, and with the army changing and adapting they may need to change their colours say for example if a new battalion was formed. The importance of the colours really just goes back to it being the rallying point on a battlefield, these days it is a rallying point for all those under that cap badge, all of those battle honours are proud moments for members of the regiment and a thing to honour those who sacrificed in those conflicts, they are holy relics of sorts that is why they are blessed on the drum altar and then hung in the regimental chapel when they’re taken out of service. Each regiment has their own colours so it is a unique thing to be proud of for them.

As matteo molica-franco says, regimental colours were historically a rallying point on the battlefield, as long as the colours could be seen then the regiment was still alive. The colours had and still have almost sacred status.
Before a battle commenced the colours were paraded or trooped before the men so they could see and recognise them. This ceremony still takes place most notably at the Queen’s birthday parade by the most senior regiments, the guards.

Blue is the facing colour of "royal" regiments of the infantry of the line, and hence the field colour for their Regimental Colours.

Could someone explain what the difference is between the two colours? Or do they serve the same purpose? Thanks, and congrats to the RGR 🇬🇮

    • @RB-747
      @RB-747 2 роки тому +8

They serve the same purpose, however new colours might be presented where the regiment has changed or the original is full (since they carry the battle honours of the regiments)

There was a time when all of the battalions of Britain's line regiments wore red coats.
Madder red was stable enough, not too expensive, and it allowed your men to distinguish friend from foe ( Of course there were exceptions).
These coats had facings ( The lapels, cuffs and collars) and these were turned back and visible against the red coat.
They were usually in a different colour to the coat and these facings allowed you to identify which regiment the men where from at a glance ( Yes, there were duplicates, but there were only so many colours they could produce).
So the monarch's colour has the Union flag ( Yes Johnny Foreigner, we're British soldiers) and often some small feature to distinguish it from everyone else's.
The regimental standard has a background that was of the same colour as the facings on the men's coats and this allowed commanders to recognise the various regiments in the battle line.
It also allowed men to recognise their regimental colour in the heat ( And considerable smoke) of battle.
Trooping these colours before the regiment ensured this, and men could rally on the colours if the regiment became dispersed or depleted.
Royal regiments were distinguished by blue facings, hence this now Royal regiment is presented with a regimental standard that has a blue background to replace the earlier colour seen in the video that matches their facings.

What a day out for those men, a shame the monarch wasn't in a position to hand them over personally but you can be assured that she approved of their design and quality of the regimental display. The old colours will be safe.

Absolutely splendid! One question though - where is the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Regimental Band? They appear supported here by one of the British Army Bands (Sandhurst perhaps?) - but a few years ago I remember seeing and hearing their own superb band at Buckingham Palace. Why didn’t it come with them to receive their new Colours? A big enough event I would have thought?

Kings and castles in the 21st century ..... Very civilized stuff. These kings are all descended from criminals who stole people's belongings by force and built these castles from them. To be safe from their rivals but also from the anger of their hostages. This world is just embarrassing to me.
