Joe Ely "The Road Goes on Forever"

  • Joe Ely does the Robert Earl Keen song. The Road Goes on Forever. There's a verse missing in the song. Not my fault. The verse goes like this.
Sonny was a loner older than the rest.
He was going in the Navy but he couldn't pass the test.
So he hung around town and sold a litte pot.
But the law got wind of Sonny and one day he got caught.
But he was back in business when they set he free again.
The road goes on forever and the party never ends!

One of the great story songs in history. The Ely version is probably the greatest because of his rock and roll interpretation. But the REK version is pretty damn good as is the version by Johnny, Waylon, Kris and the Red Headed Stranger. You are allowed to love them all.

Joe Ely is one of the best fucking singer/songwriters in the business. I swear the water in Texas produces amazing artists like no other but when they made Joe they broke the mold. This man is one of the kindest and unpretentious people I've ever met. When we seen him in Iowa City he let me and my wife sit back stage while he performed just like we were long lost friends or family! I think Letters to Laredo and Live @ Antones are two of the best albums I've ever owned. No one spins a tale the way that he does and I've seen Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, J.C. Mellencamp and even Neil Young but they all fall short in comparison. Who else can sing a song about a chicken ( Gallo del Cielo ) and make you cry? To my knowledge there is no one. Every time I see him he always has time for me to chat, get a picture, whatever! NASCAR drivers don't even do that anymore. When I play out with my band we always cover a couple of Joe's tunes and the crowd always loves them. I'm not just a starstruck groupie either as I was a union stagehand for 14 years and I've seen a lot of acts onstage. Joe Ely is the cream of the crop in my eyes and I will be more than a fan for life. Thank you Joe for coming into my life and letting me tag along. If you have not seen Joe you are sabotaging your life. We love you Joe!!

Excellent comment. I wholeheartedly endorse your words! Absolutely right, Texas seems to sprout earthy song writers like weeds. We have all sorts of independent artists doing country that are not bad either.

Met Joe in 71 when the Air Force sent me to Lubbock. After all these years, I must say... he is probably the best performer I've ever seen. We were not friends, just acquaintances. But he and Butch Hancock turned me on to the first house I rented there when they moved out of it. Jimmy Dale Gilmore lived next door. Didn't realize anything at the time, I was only 19 at the time. How to explain the influence. Keep Rocking Joe!!

He cut his teeth and built a following on open mike nights at the Main Street Saloon across from Texas Tech University. @Englishbobwv I can't allow people to call Joe Ely 'nothing special'. Joe is a damned fine singer and songwriter, a great one in my mind. Fine if you like the REK or Highwaymen version, but Joe does a great job. And Joe;s written many a tune better than this one, that he doesn't have to worry about who does a better version of a tune.

Joe IS a damned fine singer and songwriter like you say. First heard him and met him in 1973 in Lubbock when I went to TT. He would play at a place out the Tahoka highway. He played country on a big box guitar with his band. We would drink beer and dance as long as he'd play. Met him again in 82 when I was at UT, he was playing some club in Austin and then he played Gruene Hall in New Braunfels. He rocked the place till after 2am. His band was absolutely the best.

They grew up in the same area and Joe took guitar lessons in the same house that Buddy grew up in. He also met Waylon Jennings who was a member of Buddy's band, The Crickets. In fact, Waylon lost a coin flip to Richie Valens which put Waylon on the bus and Richie on the plane. Ironic how losing a coin flip works out.

I stand corrected, JD. I may be confused about band members but I am NOT confused about electronic reproduction of clean sound or video. This, and many other You Tube postings are worse than trash. Just because someone got a high price ticket and took illegal poor quality recording does not mean it should be available to the world. It's an excellent song. The recording method is crap. I speak as an audio technician and a music collector. Very disappointing posts on You Tube come from phones.

That is the whole raw fuckin point, Johnny mixing board, rawness and that the mere fact that the outlaw prick that paid too much for the ticket cut that retched turd, and the power of music and performance transcended the bootleg This version peels my scalp back hits me "like that Single Shot 410. Come on lighten up Poindexter, really, don't lose sight that you don't exist without the MUSIC.

Love, Love Joe. This band has no soul. Way out of sequence. Everyone's trying to keep up with one another. There are much better versions from Joe.
