    Common question:
What is the best method to throw a cast net? Is the easiest method better? Is there a consistent easy way to throw a cast net?
There are a dozen ways to throw a cast net, but we've found just a few are effective for most people. Try this method and see if we're right. This method was selected specifically for throwing larger bait nets in the 10 to 12 foot range. A bonus to using this method is you can do it without putting the lead line in your mouth.
Catching good bait consistently is the best bet you'll be having a great day on the water once you reach your fishing spot. Common baits people are trying to net are greenbacks / herring , pilchards/ whitebait / scaled sardines / , mullet, shad, and pogies / menhaden. Pinfish can also becaught in a cast net.
In this video we also discuss the reasons why we use different sizes of net mesh.

What brand was the 8ft net?

Ok heard that the 1/4" - 3/8" mesh form a umbrella going slower in the water. What do you suggest for small herring in 4.5-6" size range schooling in deep water off a pier? I'm in Maine. Depth is 50' deep.

Rob Rich That's much deeper than I've ever used a cast net. I stay under 20 ft. Try half inch mesh and 1.8 to 2 pounds per foot. 50 feet is really deep.

Head First Fishing I ordered just after seeing your response 1.65 lbs and wished that I ordered the 1.9 lbs per foot weight. The mesh size was 1/2" and gill netted more than half my herring. See I was concerned with 3/8" mesh netting being compromised with speed for the 3/8" mesh netting size. Looks like I do not have a choice.
I did not mean to sound like I planned on letting the net sink down to 50' but merely meant I'm fishing in deep water with massive schools of fish on the surface.
I also need to ask if you think the clear white netting may spook the herring up here because the water clarity is totally opposite Floridas clear ocean water on the eastern side. I caught 6 herring and just singles in the daytime however when I went at night is when I found out the herring were getting gill netted. I was thinking green marine color netting would work better in daytime but I'm hypothesizing. !!

Rob Rich clear is best for most situations in my opinion, but green can work well too. 6 inch baits usually don't get stuck but your herring are probably different.

Head First Fishing thanks for all your help and yeah these herring are maybe much thinner compared to others and different outline. Glad that you helped me out and greatly appreciate it!!
