    • Gibson Les Paul 1997's...
    It's a Gibson, ma'am! It's a Gibson!
    I never thought I'd be stripping paint off a Gibson guitar... five years ago, I never would have imagined it.
    After all, Gibson guitars are very expensive. The price is astronomical.
    Thank you for your request!
    The order was for peg hole repair, refinishing, pickup repair, and pickguard repositioning.
    The front PU had a col break and was not producing any sound. The pickup of this age is a base pickup.
    I was puzzled for a moment because I don't usually take apart super guitars like Gibson, but I found the broken coil.
    I found a broken coil and repaired it while pulling my hand (out of focus).
    I re-drilled the mounting holes for the pickguard and modified the shape of the pickguard a bit to fit this guitar.
    I didn't have time to take a video, so you can't see the correction of the peg hole, but it was done. The hole was a little too big for the peg bushing.
    The peg hole was a little too big for the peg bushing. Filled with sanding sealer and colored.
    I thought I didn't need to rub the frets together, but the frets were too flat.
    I had to grind the frets to get the roundness back.
    The refinish is oil finish, maple top is colored black and then painted with oil.
    I thought about using natural, but I found a big knot and colored it black.
    The back is one piece mahogany, and it's beautiful...
    I finished it with my hands. The finished photo was taken inside the house... I couldn't get a good shot... forgive me...
    Please note that this is not a product for sale.
    If you have any questions about your own guitar, please leave a comment!

    • Gibson Les Paul 1997's...

    I have to agree with some. I wouldn't have done that myself on a 80's gibson. However, you did an amazing job on this one. Too bad it's a 3 piece maple top.

    I get the point a lot of people are making about wanting to keep it vintage (and personally me I would have kept it like that myself), but you have to understand something.....it's his guitar (or an order, wasn't too sure of that), so the actual owner can do what they want.

    • @Andybassguitar

      Is the 1989 Les Paul a vintage guitar?

    You take great care in your workmanship and that is to be commended. I was fine with the back and side stain/color, but the top (face) color is a mystery...I see you noted it was requested work - However, I believe the customer requesting this work should have been taken out in a field and shot. If it were mine, a deep cleaning/polishing would have been my request - although only 30 years old, it has some character to the guitar that should have been preserved.

      @Andybassguitar  4 роки тому +1

      I'm sorry I can't understand English perfectly.
      It's clear that protecting Old Gibson.
      Nevertheless, the guitar is a personal property and its shape, color and personal freedom.
      I respect it.
      I think it's good to remove rust and polish metal parts to protect your guitar.
      Sorry for not understanding all the comments.

    Nice technique in recovering the serial number and the "MADE IN U.S.A." stamping. I'm having trouble recovering my White LP Custom ... serial # (?)2115120. Must be a 72 model because it has the volute and the missing dot in the "Gibson" logo. I purchased it 'used' in 1994 from a music store in Mississippi. Thanks for the ideas .... very nice craftsmanship. ALL in La. USA.

    • @Andybassguitar
      @Andybassguitar  5 років тому +1

      In the case of Gibson, there is a feeler in the serial number and the filler is buried, so if you take it off, the serial number may become darker.

    THe way i see it, Gibson Les Pauls are the most over priced and over hyped buitars on the market, It's not like its a 58 standard that's irreplaceable. Just an 80's era paul with nothing special about it and no crazy provenance, and at the end of the day, it's YOUR guitar. I think it turned out beautifully, i personally would have left it alone but then again its not mine! Great craftsmanship. The Gibson purists are kind of like prius owners, smug and fickle.

    You should have left it black and cream. Those are classic colors.

    I like the refinished back a lot. I'm not sure about the top, perhaps a blackburst would be an option, considering the colordifferences in the wood.
    It was a nice video to watch, nevertheless!

    The old paint act like a protective coat.

  • @NowILayTheeDownMFH
    @NowILayTheeDownMFH 4 роки тому +1

    What did you put on the front? Stain or some kind of oil? And did you protect it after that with any kind of clear coat, wax, laquer...?? I love that satin finish, it's what I want to do in a guitar but I don't know if I can leave it with a couple of coats of oil.
    Did I say that I love that finish, btw?? 😉👌
    Edit: I've read your answer to other comments and now I know it's oil. How many coats for being finished? I want to apply an "almost transparent" one just to enhance the wood, but It will be my first time and I don't know how to balance the "protection" of the finish and not to darken the wood more than I want

    • @Andybassguitar
      @Andybassguitar  4 роки тому +1

      The oil finish was applied about 5 times.
      After hardening for a long time, I applied beeswax wax.
      Please note that the oil finish may be on fire.

    Love your attention for detail. I would have given it a gold top or sunburst finish. The oil finish on the back, sides and neck look great. Nice you kept the original parts !

    IMHO, it would a lot cooler if it was natural back/black top, like the Lou Pallo model. But every person has their own taste, I guess. And there was definitely great craftsmanship there, this refinish process could've easily gone wrong in a number of ways if done by someone without the required skills.

    Hi, I have a pair of hb-r and hb-l from a 90's explorer and I would install in my r8 les paul. But looking at the base plate, the bare wire is disconnected from pickup. do i have to reconnect bare wire on the pcb, then on the volume pot with the black wire? thank you

    The oil finish on the mahogany is a great idea, but whatever you did to that beautiful maple top was criminal.. By the way, that's not a restoration.. Restoration means you return a guitar to it's original "like new" condition. in this case you should have painted it with black lacquer.

    So around the 7:25 mark it appears that you've drilled out some blue plastic from the end pin. Does Gibson commonly use spacers for the end pins? I had a Les Paul Classic a few years ago, that fell apart on me within the first few months of owning it. It showed signs of being dropped on it's end pin. The pin literally fell out while I was playing, and sawdust and a blue spacer-type piece of plastic fell out of the guitar (not to mention that the factory-installed Bigsby fell off and the paint of the guitar checked/shattered from the incident).
    At the time I wondered if it was common practice for Gibson to use devices like this to fill over-drilled holes. Seeing it here in your video only made me wonder that again.

    • @Andybassguitar
      @Andybassguitar  4 роки тому +1

      Gibson at that time would have been such a fill-in.
      It's a shameful job.

    How about at the end of a "Guitar" video you actually play it so we can hear it's sound? Not a piano...
