    Thank you for such a helpful video! I’m new to all of this. I’ve been using my USB Apogee Hypemic, with my iPad Pro, and I use the MetaRecorder app to record audio. It’s an easy setup, I bring it into my closet that I treated with moving blankets… but I’m wondering now If I need to get an XLR microphone and an interface….but can I use that with my ipad? Will that work with the ipad just as well as it does with a computer? Otherwise I’d be using the desktop Mac in the office, and I’d have to do a new setup for sound treatment in there…it’s hardwood floor and windows… :(

For equipment, do you have any thoughts/feedback on using a porta booth? I have very limited space for a studio and wanted to see if you've ever heard anything about them. Additionally rn I only have a Chromebook. Is that sufficient for recording? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Angela, I just got my first project through ACX. First-time narrator
    Before this, I was in vocal music
    I already own:
    Shure SM58 dynamic condensor XLR mic
    Popfilter
    Isolation ball
    Shockmount
    Mic stand with boom arm
    Isolation shield
    IRig Pro Duo interface
    Laptop PC with Audacity and ACX plugin and large monitor to read material
    My biggest issue is sound proofing. I have a designated recording space that I have tried to soundproof, because reverb is a huge problem.
    Am I good to go? I'm really nervous about this. My auditions have all met ACX standards. Should I record in Audacity, or can I just use the voice recorder app on my computer and upload the files to Audacity?

    • @VoiceOverAngela
      @VoiceOverAngela  6 місяців тому +1

      Good start for gear! You're best bet is to treat the room around you with soft surfaces, acoustic foam or hang blankets etc. Also note the floor, ceiling and desk top in front of you. That should help reduce reverb. You got this!

      @@VoiceOverAngela I was able to purchase a mini vocal booth (3D foam isolation box) on Amazon as well as soundproof moving blankets. Thanks so much for your help!
      The isolation shields I use for music just aren’t cutting it.
      Also, it’s a dynamic mic, I accidentally said condenser before - I’m sure you’re familiar with the Shure SM58-it’s so popular! I’m scared to get a condenser mic as I have only used them in professional settings. Are you they worth buying for home recording?

      Hi! Wearing headphones while recording is an individual preference. Some only wear them while editing, some wear one off the ear while recording to listen to what is being recorded. I love your videos. One question you never really cover is how to setup the text on your computer so you can read it easily. I've been reading holding a book in my hands and read best with the sun on the text, but this is obviously not optimum. I have a pc and use audacity to record the audio from my yeti microphone. The best sound comes from being close up to the microphone. I've heard we are not supposed to hold the book because the microphone will pick up the sound of the page turning. Would love to see what you're reading from.

    • @VoiceOverAngela
      @VoiceOverAngela  Рік тому +1

      I use my monitor to read from, but you can use a tablet or some other form of digital device. Also, be careful with being less than a few inches from your microphone, you may pick up plosives or burn the audio when you speak loudly. It's best to be around 4-6 inches from your mic.

    I just need audio equipment ( the kid at walmart said the blue yeti would do...should have listened lol), but on the bright side I decided to buy the computer first so I went top dollar (or close) with Dell Optiplex 3050 with an i5 cpu processor and 16g of ram and harddrive. However I didnt consider fan noise and I am sure there is a way to muffle it or something, I was thinking to make a recording studio. Im a writer who writes horror stories but also want to start narrating them because I know some people having a lot of success with this. One of my stories was narrated by Madame Raven and is called Perception by David MorningWay. She doesnt edit anything and messus up some sentences and delivery...but she nails the ending and that particular story the ending is EVERYTHING! Perception was a lovecraftian style story I tried out, but have finished an epic story called The Mountain, it can be stand alone but im intending ti to be a prequel to a much larger universe im creating with stories that will all eventually merge together 😈😎😇

      In regards to the fan noise, I've had some purple suggest replacing the fan with one that was silent? I'm not sure if there is such a thing? @VoiceOverAngela  5 місяців тому

      @deucedaprodeuca very true. However, I was not referring to the microphone as much as your ability to record, master and edit with the phone software. The mic does play into this and a phone's mic, however good, could never match the sensitivity of a broadcast quality mic.

      @VoiceOverAngela What I'm saying is, I love what you do and I repsect you, but you're wrong. Phone mics and software can rival many studio mics and definitely rival the cheap mics that I see people using to do voiceovers. I'm saying, the top tech UA-camr in the world has done the comparison. He shot an entire video series and compared it to professional cameras and mics, then at the end of the series, he asked people what they thought about the audi/video quality, did a direct comparison to a professional setup, and most people thought the phone was the professional setup, that includes audio and video. Get with the times. I'm not talking about phones you buy at airports and grocery stores.

      If you’re only doing audio, you’d be more than fine with just 4gb of RAM. Angela’s advice about getting the most you can afford is spot on though especially if you plan on taking on larger projects. In todays age though, you’d be hard pressed to find a reputable prebuilt PC with only 4gb, especially if it has a more beefier cpu like an i5.
      A lot more goes into a well running PC than just its physical components though. I’m assuming your PC is running Windows. Do a UA-cam search for “Optimizing Windows for Audio Production”. You’ll probably come across more videos pertaining to recording music/instruments but the PC optimization is the same regardless of what you’re recording. The DAW (digital audio workstation) you decide to use can also have a taxing affect on your PC’s resources. I like to use Reaper. For voice recording, it is ALL you need. It comes with an indefinite “free” trial but only costs a one time $60 price for a personal license. Reaper is a fully functioning DAW with nothing behind a paywall (besides a license, which you should purchase anyways if you make money using it but is not required to fully use the program) and with only recording vocals, your PC hardly even knows the program is running. I’m not affiliated with Reaper but I advocate it’s use for beginners because of its cost and functionality. The cost of other DAW’s are extremely off putting to new comers and a lot of their features are behind a paywall of some kind. It’s extremely easy to set up a single mic application in Reaper.

    Love your videos! I finally dove in and got some equipment and finished my starter "sound cave" as I'm calling it 😆 But I'm curious, how should I set up my profiles and applications for the different sites when I'm a total beginner? How do I sound respectable when I have zero experience narrating audio books? Or how could I get experience before auditioning on these sites?

    hello. excellent video. for some reason, it sound like tire mic is far from off.. even worn you on speaker and audio all the way up it's as lthough you're talking from the next room in decibels-- hard to hear. I will put in my head phones And see if it's easier to hear. don't get a " loud enough to hear ( straining to make-up the words) worth my phone on the desk right in front of me. that doesn't happen on youtube much anymore. however, I can tell that the quality of your voice is crisp and rounded good tones!! just the loudness makes it so hard to hear and thus dismaying, as the conntent is excellent!!!!!!!!! and quality of sound excellent!!!! the loudness; can hardly hear💜💜💜💖💜💜

      Interesting.... thanks for your comment! I went to listen to this video and it sounds the same volume as the others on my end. I'm not sure why it's so quiet for you, but thank you for the heads up!
