Such a tasty build -- that drive train really pops, and the Brooks saddle/bar tape combo is excellent! If Calvin's dad had this bike he'd quit his day job, no doubt. 👏🏻
I’ve drooled over a hell of a lot of bikes in my time and this is right up there amongst the most beautiful. If only I could take it for a spin. Superb work 👍
Awesome video! I just got my Outback frame today. Your video answered a bunch of questions I had. I appreciate your organized approach. Lean and to the point!
Not only the sickest build I've seen on this channel, but this is one of the SICKEST builds on the internet! Love my Ritchey Zeta Disc wheels and bars. Great company and great support if you need it!
I just picked up an Outback Break-away. Haven’t built it up yet but doing something similar. Running Advent X 1X. Been wanting a bike that will fit in a suitcase for years. Stoked!
Wow. Stunning. Have to say that whilst I love my Paul Klampers...my shoe occasionally clips the rear brake..whereas the design of these brakes pulls more to the center,so would not be an issue. Beautiful bike
I built a very similar Ritchey Swiss Cross recently with the same Growtac brakes, TRP levers (non-drilled version), 1x bar-end shifter (Microshift) and Brooks (but Cambium). Beautiful build!
Nice build! For those who want a wide range 11 speed cassette without modifying the derailleur cage, e13 makes a 9-46 cassette. But it does require an XD hub.
I’m running that on my bike presently. But the 9 tooth is unusable for me had to set the limit screw to make it a 10 speed. Chain will slip when pedaling hard in the 9 tooth. And I had to buy another more expensive wheel set with the XD driver from DT on top of it just to use the e-thirteen cassette. But I can still spin in low 30’s using a 40T ring.
@@LoranBriggs That wouldn’t help. The issue is the chain wants to ride over the teeth when you apply a lot of torque. In other words it skips no matter what. Possibly once the cog wears it doesn’t catch the chain as it only happened after running the cassette for a while. But that said, it’s too expensive to replace all the time just because the ninth tooth doesn’t want to catch the chain.
Sweet Outback build! Looks awesome. The blue fade paint job on the frame looks great. That drivetrain 😎. Enjoy it! I have a Ritchey Ascent, built up as a drop bar mtb/touring bike last year. So much fun to ride. I ride it more than my gravel bike or full suspension mountain bike.
Absolutely stunning build. I love that blue, brown and chrome aesthetic! Regards the wheel rim width, I've recently finished a build video converting a flat bar hybrid to a drop bar gravel which had 32mm tyres. I swapped them out for 43mm Panaracer Gravelking SK but used the original Alexrims wheels, which had a 17mm rim width. I was concerned they wouldn't work but they run as sweet as anything. Only done a few hundred miles on it so far, but I've massively fallen in love with it and have largely left the carbon fibre bike I built in the garage!
If I stayed with a drop-bar gravel bike (switched to hardtail), this bike would be #1 on the list. What a great all-rounder! But it should be the breakaway! Thanks!
Perfect timing. Just built up my outback breakaway and went with the growtac as well. Super nice and danty (sp?). A bit fiddley to get em installed although that may have just been the novice builder in me. First ride is today. Went with a 46/30 upfront and 11-40 in back but really liking your 40/50. So much easier! Eager to see how u like that config
@@TheBikeSauce don't have far to carry it when it breaks for the 3rd time. 8 broken frames. I'm done. Even free, nope. Like stuff that works. Like my Timex watch🤣🤣😂
Absolutely exquisite. My favorite is the set of TRP RRL brake levers, although in my experience they are not going to stay that color. Luckily you can easily swap them out for standard black hoods when you grow tired of trying to scrub them after every ride. Stay classy my freind.
I was really looking at buying one of these but w/ the availability (or lack there of) and the Rodeo Labs Flaanimal being available and shipping the same week, I went that route which I am very very satisfied w/ how it came out. All black (bronze decals) with tan walled Maxxis Mezcals. I'm considering backing it off to a more gravelly tire but it rolls along quite nice and off road you can just toss it around like its a HT MTB. They did a really good job with compliance, even in the fork. Might not be quite as good as the Ritchey w/ their 1-1/8th but all in all the compliance for a stock frame is exceptional. Solid build, and I know bike fit is completely personal, but have you looked at running the levers level w/ the bar and running the stem negative to get that "flat" look. It essentially places the hoods in the exact same place but offers a slightly nicer transition to the tops, and less "locked-in" saddle feeling in the hoods. The only problem I've experienced with bar-end shifters is in technical terrain, out of the saddle, is knocking the shifter with the knee and basically dumping the gears. It's actually happened a couple times, and really the only reason I don't still use bar-end shifters today. Either way, should be an excellent ride, it's definitely a looker!
This is the tastiest looking build i have seen in a long while. I am trying to persuade myself no to order the this frameset and barw and the full 2x grx ltd groupset for my ‚forever bike’ build. I wish chrome accessories made a comeback. There are no modernly sized rims and hubs in chrome on the EU market which prevents me from making the decission
@@TheBikeSauce i am currently running the updated version of this wheelset in black in my other bike with 21mm internal rim width and i like it very much. The silver version is using older 19mm rim which is to
In general I don't like gold accents, but in this build they're more than looking fine. That build ended up being nothing less than perfect, kudos and enjoy riding it.
I really enjoyed watching this build, bike really looks classy. Like you got an old frame and put all the modern parts on it but with "vintage touch". Looks really really great and I like it a lot and the shifter sounds amazing. Personally I have an old german road bike which I fully restored last year and it has one specific shifter called Shimano Positron. Interesting idea and it's bombproof, instead of cable it uses thick steel wire, I relly like to ride it.
Love the build. Reminds me of a recent white-blue crust evasion lite build from bluelug. I think gold chain would look banger. True mechanic sense to run full housing. Loved all the part selection, it's like exactly how i would build mine. What size is the frame and what length of the handlebar? Would be interested for a followup / semi longterm review of the bike ride feel!
Sick build man. Really like the way you’ve run the cable on the down tube, looks much tidier. I’d be tempted to nip those redundant lugs off the top tube with a hack saw and blend them in with some touch up paint. Appreciate that would be a butt twitching job though! 😮 Would’ve been nice to se some gratuitous pan shots of the finished build like you usually see in build videos!
Great build. Congrats. Can you tell me what brand or which vendor you bought your brake levers. I ride a 1987 Eddy Merckx using old school brake levers and down tube shifters. Many thanks for any info.
Ive just ordered a frameset purely because I watched your videos. Can't wait for it to arrive
Such a tasty build -- that drive train really pops, and the Brooks saddle/bar tape combo is excellent! If Calvin's dad had this bike he'd quit his day job, no doubt. 👏🏻
I bought an new Outback in 1986, Pullins bike shop, Chico Ca. It was a good time those college years.
I found a store with a 50th Anniversary frame in my size and your parts list is a big bonus helping with my build.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
This beholder's eye thinks that is beautiful!
And very nicely edited too 👍

Beautiful build. Seriously one of the nicest gravel builds iv seen on the net.
Dude. 🙏🙏
43 seconds in omg its beautiful. I love that frame.... generally they are all the same but.... This hits the eye candy button..
Excellent colour combo. Love the comeback of silver parts. Classic to the max!

(this my 14th Ritchey. First is an '87 Super Comp which I still ride)
That is a bike I could love! Welcome to the neo-grouch/friction shifting world! All steel! Excellent!

Nice bike. I ride a Ritchey Swiss Cross V2 and for years rode a Ritchey Breakaway CX w/ cantis. I love them.
I don't know if I can like this bike MORE, so dope!

I love the retro-modern hybrid of this build. Looks great. Looking forward to the ride video
Awesome Build! I have the Breakaway with all Ritchey Classic parts and polished Klampers! Can't go wrong with Ritchey.
a very handsome build, nice work
a derailer is used on a train track, a derailleur is a bicycle component.
When I pronounce it ‘derailleur,’ I get grief for over pronouncing. Can’t win.
Wow what a coincidence. I just got the same Garbaruk cassette with cage same colour too! The bike is gorgeous!
I built a very similar Ritchey Swiss Cross recently with the same Growtac brakes, TRP levers (non-drilled version), 1x bar-end shifter (Microshift) and Brooks (but Cambium). Beautiful build!
I can picture it now. 🤘
What a beautiful machine……. Love it
Gorgeous build and the vibe of the video was a perfect pairing.
a thing of beauty, love those cable ends too!
I know this is a bit old, but WOW that is freaking beautiful

That derailleur cage needs a silver paint job. Other than that: 😍love it!
