Andy, as a business owner, never apologize for making money. I was a small business operator for 42 years, and harder do successfully than anyone can imagine. If you run a business honerably and ethically as you do, you have every right to make a profit. In fact, it has to be right up there with your other values. You owe it to yourself, family, customers and viewers to make money in order to continue providing the value that you do. And, as with any other trade, performing bike repair "right" is subjective. It is dependant on your customers and the bikes they ride. So try on to take the negative comments persally. We all ride bikes and therefore, are "experts". And thanks for the wonderful content. I love all of it. I have been a cyclist since I was a kid delivering papers on my old beat up Huffy that my dad purchased at a local bike shop. That might have been the most valuable bike I have ever owned even though it was a piece of crap. And this comment is "good enough for who its for".

While I don't think an apology is in order, I personally wouldn't buy a bike that someone donated, likely with the intention of helping a person in need, to sell for a profit. A financially struggling person could've purchased this to use for college or work. A lifelong friend of mine purchased one as a broke college student and rode it 12 miles one way daily to an internship. Now he's a very successful person, but that inexpensive bike from a charity shop was one of the stepping stones that helped him get to where he is today.

Haters gonna hate. I've been fixing up old bikes for 30 years as a hobby and flip some of them to help pay for my hobby, sometimes I even make a little money on them LOL. I also keep WAY too many of them. I got pretty decent at it and my old LBS, may it RIP, even offered me a job. Too bad I was already making 3X as much, I would have loved working there, I definitely would have enjoyed it a lot more than what I was doing at the time. We have the same view on bikes for the most part and I've picked up some good alternatives to my methods watching your videos. My methods have served me well but it's always good to have a backup. Keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep watching.

About your comment in regards to keeping too many bikes. I would consider myself a slightly above averagecasual rider back in the day, averaging 45-54 miles per week. Due to life's little surprises, that number has been reduced dramatically. With that being said, I own four MTBS, some altered for road, fire trails and then one for rougher terrain. Also got a foldy to take into the grocery store when I do food runs. I currently own five bikes. I cannot part with them as they represent parts of my life that I associate with each bike. I am curious as to how many you usually keep on hand?

Watching your video has inspired me to get into resurrecting older bicycles. I was an automotive mechanic for over a decade and got burned out on the industry and now run a lawn care business (much less stress).
I miss wrenching on stuff and only get to in the winter when our equipment needs maintenance. Project cars are just too expensive with 4 kids these days. I e always been into BMX bikes since I was a kid.
Fixing bikes is what got me into fixing cars.
I tried to get into fixing old BMX bikes but they are absolutely absurd in price these days. So I stumbled across your channel some how and have two older mountain bikes that I will start to mess around with.
One is a complete Ross Hi-Tech Bear Mtn. very good survivor example that I think I will just service and put back together all original.
The next project that I’m most excited for is a 1993 Trek Antelope 800. It’s in rough shape but the frame/fork is actually in great shape as well as the awesome paint scheme it has. Wish it was a U.S. made model but it’s still a great bike. I think I may put some different handle bars on it to make it a bit of a nice road cruiser.
I’ve always avoided the mountain bike scene as I always got the gatekeeper/elitist vibe from the community. But I really appreciate that your channel just simply caters to regular people who just like to ride and fix bikes. Thanks for the great content!

Thanks for investing in the tech and taking the time to make this series.
Four years back I decided that my bike was getting more lost in the shed with every season due to the need to do simple maintenance to keep it ride worthy. A few UA-cam videos like yours and it was out of the shed and with some tinkering I was riding again.
The biggest win was replacing the el-cheapo drive train with 11 speed LinkGlide (before the market CUES branding). I set it up in the first attempt without issue and was really impressed with how reliable and consistent it is. When compared with drivetrains that are on multi thousand dollar performance racing bikes the shifting is slower as the shifting is delayed until the next shift ramp on the cassette is engaged. This keeps the loading on the drivetrain even and minimizes mechanical transient shock loads.
My take is given the target market for CUES (or LinkGlide) is the e-bike market (much heavier bikes) where drivetrains can be shredded by the high torque loads of the electric motors. I am a an ATB rider, not a racer so for my use case the CUES drive train has significantly improved my ride time and minimized my fix it time. I am loving the low cost, high quality, robust design and build and ease of install and setup that Shimano has incorporated into CUES.

The simple fact is that people who comment that kind of crap don't have the slightest clue what is like running a business, if they did, they would know that you don't charge only for labor. First off, you charge for what you know, not what you do, second, the labor is but one part of what you need to charge, there are other expenses associated with running a business and you have to factor that into the final cost of a service...

The last of American high-quality steel bikes made in the USA by Trek before the industry started moving to aluminum for cheaper weight savings.

heads up. CUES is always slow going onto the smaller cogs because it's designed not to shifed UNTIL it hits the shift gate in the cassette, thats the whole point of the linkglide and CUES ecosystems. and the reason it does this is because it's designed for ebikes. it explained this to me on the Shimano Tec documents and trainings, its to help it not rip the mech off when its used on ebikes, which is what its origional design is for

LOVE this build! I did something similar with my trusty old 90's Specialized mountain bike, although I went a little deeper down the rabbit hole...to the tune of about $1500 in components, LOL!
One thing to keep in mind with Shimano CUEs is that LinkGlide prioritizes durability and the ability to reliably shift under loads (including mid-drive e-bike loads!) over shifting speed. Even when set up perfectly, it's always going to feel a little sluggish to change gears compared to what we've become accustomed to with Shimano's HyperGlide+. The trade off is something that should be more reliable in the long run....and something more tolerant of maintenance neglect.

I think for sizing chains; big cog and big ring, plus 3 links works. As long as the chain doesn't rub on the front of the derailleur cage in the smallest cog and ring, and the chain is long enough that it will shift into big and big, you're good. With a single chain ring there should be lots of margin. What you did looked fine to me.

Pro-tip: For brake cables you can wind out the barrel adjuster on the levers about a quarter inch. Now at the calipers just cinch it down fully tight before nipping up the bolt. When you screw the barrel shifter back in you get a really consistent pad gap every time without chewing up the cable.
