Here Today - lyrics
And if I said
I really knew you well
What would your answer be?
If you were here today
Here today
Well knowing you
You'd probably laugh and say
That we were worlds apart
If you were here today
Here today
But as for me
I still remember how it was before
And I am holding back the tears no more
I love you
What about the time we met?
Well I suppose that you could say that
We were playing hard to get
Didn't understand a thing
But we could always sing
What about the night we cried?
Because there wasn't any reason left
To keep it all inside
Never understood a word
But you were always there with a smile
And if I say I really loved you
And was glad you came along
Then you were here today,
For you were in my song
Here today
That performance was particularly heart-wrenching.. the way his voice kept breaking ffs.
+Taylor Lynn All things must pass... including McCartney's voice
@@mattlongman2770 From what he said at the end though, it seems like his voice was breaking in part because he was trying not to cry, not just because of old age.
On the morning after, I was on my way to work via #7 train from Flushing to Manhattan. It was the first time I ever rode a NYC in total silence. Literally no one spoke. People got on and off with nary a word, nor a glance. We all seemed to be in a state of Trauma. John had a TREMENDOUS IMPACT on our world. So So Sad! The funny thing is on the day of his birthday in 1980 Yoko hired a plane and had "Happy Birthday John and Sean" written over the city. I remember thinking, "Only a Beatle could have Happy Birthday written in the sky over "The World's Greatest City"! To this day I have trouble(as do many others) hearing certain songs("In My Life") and watching certain videos (his hysterical antics at Shea) without tearing up. God Bless John! Thank You for making my childhood such a wonderful time to be alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+BOB DUNNE Besides close friends I never met anyone from New York who went through that night, specially from Queens. I was in Elmhurst working on some lyrics for my band and I got the call (I was not watching TV) and I got dizzy , I am not sure if i had an embolism and being a kid in a promising band I remember asking "So what do we DO???" In some weird kind of alternate dimension I thought "Okay THE MUSIC'S OVER.. turn out the lights" The band mate who called me and I just stayed on the phone sobbing . It may sound silly for any other generation but to US it was "So what's the point...? then it was "let's go to Manhattan!" What's the point? "Okey I'll drive over your house.." What's the point....? and in that series of "What's the point ? a melody grew up.. the phrase had a rhythm . So we did get together and wrote it.... BUT the damn song was not a sad melancholy ode to John , more like a John Lennon .. ditty .. and THAT is how we got through that night.... but to this day to me when all seems bleak that day and that phrase pops up.."what IS the point?"
mickavellian You are right about other generations not comprehending what WE were going through. You can have your One Directions and your Justin Biebers, they affect a small % of a generation. THE BEATLES affected an ENTIRE GENERATION. I guarantee you in 50 years they will not be doing JUSTIN BIEBER lunch breaks on radio stations. My friend George said to me "My life is over". It had that kind of impact. I always think that the Beatles coming so close after the JFK assassination helped lift OUR GENERATION out of the doldrums. It was going to be OK.! John, Paul, George and Ringo made us forget all about everything. The music(WHAT GREAT BLEEPING SONGS) and the laughs(A bunch of us got kicked off Football team for skipping practice to go see A HARD DAY'S NIGHT 10 times--hey that's where the girls were.). It was a wonderful time which will never happen again. John was so funny(always goofing off for the cameras or having some quick witted response to a silly question. If you can go to YT and watch Shea concert(1 or 2 I forget which)where Paul forgets words to a song and camera pans to John. His face is priceless. When I have time I will check and cue you where to go. Wow, I just looked up, I can BS. Though the lights went out for a generation that night, I still have one shining beam in my life. One of those girls we went to movies with and Shea concerts with is still with me everyday. I am lucky. Be Well Be Safe!
+BOB DUNNE EVERYONE from that generation has tons of stories how somehow in some ways The Beatles changed their lives. You see I was born in Cuba and it was illegal to listen to The Beatles but I have a VERY cool dad who was in his late 20s and was a sound engineer, so he'd bring Brit/USA music and my house was Beatles central and more than once we got busted and kids thrown i jail , but it did not matter everyone kept at it. I remeber my mom not too much into music humming And I love her. We were not affected by Kennedy's death (well my family was cause we were against Castro) but to EVERYONE thhe bleak dark strangling communism sort of went in the background and our lives was no longer the REVOLUTION , our lives was The Beatles . And boys made guitars out of chunks of wood, I spent months carving drumsticks, grew our hair and hope not to get caught. The WORLD changed . I got out of Cuba and A hard days night was already a few years old and was still playing in small movies and we sat there and watched it 7 times and there were only like 5 people in the theater. This was in Spain. So I saw YOUTH in Cuba , Spain, England and the USA and we were THE SAME . They changed the world PERIOD. Nothing positive will just sweep the world in that magnitud . And this may sound petty, but THAT is one of the things that is MINE it is OURS and when I read kids or noobs posting sheer bull as to what they said or they did or how this or that happened it TRULY upsets me, because they are playing with my life. I firmly believe we are alive because the Beatles made the Russian kids and the Western kids we were the same kids . How can I kill someone who's dressed exactly like me and humming the same song? And the old "BOSS" meant nothing screw politics . We were SO lucky to be smack in the middle of that period of time . No one will ever know again what it was like to go run , buy Abbie Road tear that wrap off and just stare at the cover WOAH just a picture . WOAW . No one took the album out it was a ritual of WHOW - Paul is barefooted WOAH . Look at Ringo's Jacket.
We were lucky myfriend . and to see that they are BIGGER than when you and I were drooling over Beatles boots. So we must lend them to the noobs but I do it with trepidation because they do not have the respect.
i am TRULY happy (and it is not BS) I AM happy your girl is still with you , the stories you can share . I think everyone of us has a book in them as to how the Beatles changed their lives
A hug , to you and your girl...
mickavellian Great story---Haven't even thought about The Beatles being in Cuba. Cool--There is no way to explain to anyone(our Grandchildren like The Beatles-but don't comprehend the connection to our lives) unless you were directly affected by them. In 1992, I went with "My Beautiful Girl" and our two children to London. Went to Abbey Road studios and of course walked across the street about 100 times. Cars kept beeping but, hey it was ABBEY ROAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On the wall in front of studio people write all over the wall. The cabbie said, "They have to paint it every two weeks". So somewhere under clobs of paint are our names. I have said to many people "I would not trade my one lifetime for a shot at a million others". They think I am full of it--They don't understand those times COULD NEVER BE DUPLICATED--N E V E R!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Be Well! Be safe!
+BOB DUNNE I actually lived in London for over a year and never went to Abbey Road. It was a weird sense of being overwhelmed and I can get kinda emotional and did not want to make a fool out of myself. I get very "trapped" in the moment and time goes by. I studied art and when I went to the VanGogh museum in Amsterdam I broke down crying for 2 hours (there's a side room for nuts like me :) - So I KNEW I'd loose it. I did walk past Paul's house on Cavendish Ave I don't know if he still lives there but there were a lot of "I Love you Paul" on the wall fence, some wrote whole stories. I met a girl online who lived 2 doors away from Ringo's house in Liverpool (the house in Dingle) and she says it is still a pilgrimage on the "Magical Beatles Tour" . She is young but is a fan , while other kids do not even KNOW the relationship with Liverpool and The Beatles, strange.
I agree. Most people's live history is full of tragedy (the early 40s generation was all war) but we had the BEST and it has not gone away which I find incredible. I saw a LITTLE kid like 7-8 at Starbucks with a Beatles t-shirt and I found it amusing cause I have the same t-shirt and I asked him what his fave Beatles song was.. I was knocked out ! He sort of thought about it and it was no "obla-di-obla-da" he hits me with "Hmm "RAIN", "Happiness is a warm Gun" & "A day in the life" I looked at the mother and she smiled and said "Do not ask ME, he knows more about that period than I do. There was a "young one" who KNOWS The Beatles and man , it makes me so proud !
Cheers to the family Bob.
heart breaking stuff
+David Walsh 💧
I love it how the crowd went silent when Paul started singing 'Here Today'. True friendship lasts forever, bro! John is still there with you, in your heart, and smiling.
Here I am again, crying my eyelids out.
Thank you for this moving tribute, Sir Paul McCartney!
This is one of the most touching songs i have ever heard and it always makes me cry. Was 35 years ago tonight and at times, it still seems to be like last week. A special gift from God has been stolen from us. DAMN.
I love this. So touching. I'm learning to play Here Today in the ukulele. Love my main 2, Paul and John.
Maria Belen Sanchez upload it man ill check it out later. 👍
I wonder how he could get through that song at all without his heart breaking all over again.
+Jeff Rey He can not complete that song he just can NOT. At some point he'll crack. but I think the TRUE masterpiece of his love for John is "Two of us" . Paul details their lives together with so much hidden clues "burning matches, lifting latches" Every line has a John/Paul reference but this KILLS me
"You and I have memories
Longer than the road
That stretches out ahead"
+mickavellian Actually he wrote "Two Of Us" for Linda. He said that himself. But well, it might have been some inspiration from John too, who knows?
+Mister Green He had both Linda and John in his mind when he wrote that song.
+mickavellian Even reading the lyrics to Two of Us destroys me. It's one of my favorite Beatles' songs, but I tend to refrain from listening to it in fear of crying for the rest of the day. It really affects me that much.
It's never to late to sing what you mean, always liked that one.
omg this song is so beautiful
It´s no matter how many times I watch this video, I just start crying every time! John was a great man!
thanks Paul for this beatiful song....
Here Today - one of Paul McCartney's masterpieces!
It's not possible for me to get through the song without crying so I couldn't imagine what it's like for Paul :(
I'm not crying . But this song is amazing you're right
Always in our hearts. The Beatles will live forever. Thank you for the music and the memories.
Why did I have to click on this video!!! Now I'm drowning in my own tears
That song was so powerful when heard in a stadium, I couldn't hold back the tears... Again, thank you Paul
Love you Paul!!!! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!!! We love him too:):):)
The song is so beautiful. Best part is not here. It is when he says...I looooove youuuu
Best song ever. Real feelings i love you paul thanx for the love and peace you give us
Touching and emotional, but that is what binds people. still have tears in my eyes 35 years later and every year this date. Let's celebrate Sean's birthday and thinking of John today.
when he said: “If you want to say to someone you love them, tell them now, ‘cause, you know, there may come a point when it’s too late, and you think, 'I wish I’d said that" about here today?
That's true?
@@rpproducciones86 when did he say that? Did he say that in this video?
Not in this video... in reference to this song! I only want to now if that this is true.
I love this video.
I 💖 Paul McCartney, he is really amazing! 💖✌☮
Touching. Thanks, Sir Paul.
*sniff* this was the song I gave to my aunt who passed away from cancer 😭😭😭 I sang my own version of this song… it was the last thing she heard
Paul is still flourishing and so is Ringo
Great tribute, thank you Sir Paul McCartney.
This physically hurts
It's sad to think that ringo was neutral.... paul wanted the beatles to go on forever... and all the others didn't and the last remaining of the beatles are paul and ringo sharing that loneliness
Awww I'm legit crying 😰😰😰😰😭😭😭
It just hits the same every time my heart ah :'(
This is so beautiful and heartbreaking
Beautiful song. God bless them all.
ah Christ .. this is beautiful. . one true friend to another ..
I had just moved to NYC to start a writing career in Summer 1980----and it was always in my mind to go and try to shake John's hand. Then it was too late. But he's still the hero in a world of psychopaths.
Heart breaking but beautiful.
Miss you John
This song always makes me cry
beautiful
We will never forget John Lennon
Забудем мы . Уже забыли . Взгляни на мир . Все в точности да наоборот .
