  • I take out the Zero SR, kindly supplied by the The English Electric Motor Company (englishelectricmotorco.com), on a 75 mile trip to test the range, the ride and everything in between. I also stumble upon Windsor getting ready for the Royal Wedding.
    Lots of info, pictures, etc.. on my website, Facebook, Instagram & Twitter:

    Bought my zero sr two months ago. Get an average of 75-110 miles per charge, goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. And sneaking up on pedestrians then honking to scare them is mildly satisfying lol.

    I would say that having a silent bike is probably dangerous because peds won't hear you coming... but RJ already has one of the loudest bikes I've ever heard and he gets enough people walking out on him to make montages lol

      @cartmanrlsusall 6 років тому

      I'll never trust the sound of my bike to expect a pedestrian to do something clever... quiter or louder I always expect them to be zombies idiots. So to have a Tron-like sounding bike is quite enjoyable I think.

      Have ridden a zero, because there are no pipes YOU can here traffic much better. You being able to hear cars coming up from behind is far more reliable (you are paying attention) than people in cars hearing pipes (they aren't paying attention).

    • @oharra
      @oharra 5 років тому

      @@bikebudha01 Lol, and what's the big benefit of "hearing cars coming up from behind"?? You have mirrors for that too, but I don't think that posseses a real danger :).It's more moments when for example a car does a manoevre, turns left/right and doesn't hear you coming... So I agree that's is very usefull to have a loud bike to protect yourself, there are a lot of idiots on the road, and that way they'll at least know you are there...

    Hi everyone
    I’ve road tested the same bike and RJ’s comments are spot on
    The only let down at the moment is the prices but that’ll change the more we buy it etc etc etc

    When I buy my SR, the first non-factory accessory I will add is... a traditional "Brrring! Brrring!" bicycle bell. I see you are riding with us in the UK, I have to say pedestrians here are life-threateningly oblivious to vehicles - and doubly so with quiet/silent EVs. Sure it's got a horn (a bit obnoxious for peds), and you like to whistle, but I can't whistle for $hit.
    Great vid, brother.

    I think you should ad a Zero to your quiver. I have the DS and love it. No shifting, just twist and go. While going through the village you exposed a weak point in regards to peds. They don't hear you! So you you have to be extra careful around them. With cars people say loud pipes save lives and I have discovered it's not always true. If someone is not going to see you a loud pipe won't always help. They won't see you no matter what you're riding. But I have discovered that with the electric bike I can hear things going on around me that I couldn't hear before. Cars approaching etc. What's really fun is filtering up to a stop light and surprising people sitting in their cars. You are much less intimidating on a quiet bike and it brings out the friendly side of people that would normally just ignore you. It makes riding through the city even more fun. The torque doesn't hurt either! Ride Safe...

    A loud pIpe has never saved anyone's life. Riding with more awareness than the cagers is what protects you in the end. Riding in traffic and around pedestrians meandering about the road, it's perfectly fine to use your horn - in a polite manner, not blaring. A friendly 'beep-beep' is usually all that's needed to remind a pedestrian they're not supposed to be walking down the middle of the road.
    I miss filtering, it's illegal in most of the 'States, even for bicyclists! Great review R.J.

    I like almost everything about this bike. The two issues I have are range and the absence of sound to other vehicles. I couldn't have it as a primary bike because I enjoy riding all day and 70 miles of range only covers 1/3 to 1/4 of the distance I'd want to cover. Great as a commuter bike though.

    They've come a long way with their range. That was the biggest complaint in North America with the earlier models. Now if we could get more quick chargers in rural Canada, it would make this a more dependable ride.
    Where I live, I know of only 3 quick charge stations in the county. 2 of them are private, set up for company employees. 1 is public and in the middle of the busiest town in the county. It is in a nice location though. It's on the riverfront with walking paths and picnic areas, as well as being close to the downtown shops and eateries (It's even powered by a windmill). They're quite common to see in our cities, but still scarce in the small towns and rural areas. In Canada, our larger cities are very far apart, as Canada is still mostly rural. But it's nice to know that the newer ones would make a good commuter bike as I have an 80km round trip to work.

    When I get an electric bike, I'm putting a device on it that plays a repeating loop of sound recorded and saved digitally, that I can activate by a button on the handlebars (button will probably one from Revival Cycles in Austin, TX). It will play the theme song of the Tenth Doctor Who played by David Tennant. That will allow pedestrians/drivers to hear me coming, like on that one street in the video with all the pedestrians at about 14:30.

    As a long time electric vehicle driver (and some tiding) there are two things that eat battery and range; speed and acceleration. To get max range only accelerate of brake when you must and don'[t exceed 60mph. Ideally keep it under 40 mph. Save the blasts of acceleration for when it's fun.
    FWIW, my 2nd generation Chevrolet Volt has slightly more torque than my old 2011 Subaru STi. That silent whoosh of power is absolutely addicting, and this isn't a "fast" EV. Even my old "Slow" Nissan Leaf could beat most cars to 30mph. It's fun to make a game out of maximizing your range.
    I've ridden the previous SR. Was a hoot. The now gone Brammo/Victory Empulse I rode was certainly faster at freeway speeds thanks to a normal gearbox. More electric bikes are coming. I look forward to see what they come up with.

    Hi RJ,
    Yet another fantastic review, but I need to say a few things;
    1) is the regenerative braking as good as they make out? Is that how you stayed at 40% so long?
    2) do you have to use more braking because of reduced ability for engine braking?
    3) round town for you feel you need to make revving sounds with your mouth to alert pedestrians and cyclists?
    4) would you buy one of these at the current 18k price tag?
    Cheers

    I think it's a great bike. Does it have it's limitations? Certainly but that's why we have a 2nd bike or car or truck or bicycle. It's not meant to be a replacement for a cruiser or touring bike. It's a tool that does it's job exceedingly well.

      Perfectly put. It is funny how a lot of these guys who never ride further than 200km a day all of a sudden take trip to West Africa every Tuesday when they hear the range

    Come on RJ, your telling me you'd hear the tick tick of the indicator on your piped s1000r or Nuda ?? Not convinced. I wouldn't hear it on my tuned bike over the pops and bangs and wind noise. But very nice bike and great instant torque for city and medium paced ride out.....I guess the future is quiet and you go home early? Great review as always :) thank you.

    Does the bike have some sort of hand brake function as an alternative to leaving a bike in gear when you have to park on an incline?

      There could be one last one, comparing it to the Nuda. Haven't edited it yet or decided to publish it. However, there could be a nice road trip on one soon, nothing promised.

    Should attach a carbon can to the swing arm for fun. Also, could you review a sinnis 125 at some point? I'm thinking of getting one and I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. Great video RJ.

    I wonder if the exhaust manufacturers will make "sound packs" that will basically be a speaker with an emulated exhaust note. Feel like riding a 45 degree twin, select A...want a screaming 4 cylinder, select B.
    Really interesting review, thanks.

    In sport mode, the bike does zero regeneration. It's better to set up a custom mode with 100% power and some regeneration, if you want more range.

    It takes some getting used to the engine noise. At moments it sounded like something was chafing/grinding. And the obvious downside is the lack of sound which was clear from the part near the end with those pedestrians.

    How'd you find the commuting into London? I ride a similar route in as you down the M4 A4 flyover and really tend to value the full system exhaust to part traffic both at higher and lower speeds round central. Did you feel more vulnerable riding silently at all? Less people notice you etc?

    I have an electric longboard. It’s not exactly the same thing, but kinda close. One you get used to using sport mode, it’s impossible to be satisfied with the slowness of economic mode.

    I wonder what the minimum size gasoline generator would be able to recharge the battery as you ride. Like for a long range ride with no charging stations. Like... I wonder if a little model airplane engine could do the job, if nothing else, just to increase the range.
