They were wrong completely. The reason that Leinster did well and seemed dominant is because they beat Montpelliers mix of second and third team because the 1st team all had reasons they couldn't play. Then Toulouse lost because they were still recovering from a 100 minute game against Munster. La Rochelle are always incredible to watch and always do so well. La Rochelle beat the Irish national selection!! This is phenomenal. Great club that has built itself methodically over the last 10 years or so. They were barely making it to the first division back in the 80’s /90’s and are now a serious contender for the Top14 and European cup titles every year. They also play a complete entertaining rugby. Leinster tried to play safe, La Rochelle scored 3 tries and shut them out. Very impressive.

Losing 2 finals in a row would have been tough for la Rochelle, especially with Leinster scoring only penalties. A well deserved victory over one of the best European clubs.
Can't complain about only scoring penalties when La Rochelle were committing tonnes of fouls whenever Leinster got going in their 22. Hard to score tries when constantly dealing with infringements. If Leinster had the same tactics they would have won.
@@cilliangreene4350 You're being dishonest here. Leinster could have scored many tries had it not been for la Rochelle's defense. The fouls were each time converted in points for Leinster. I believe that if you're not able to score tries, it's up to you. Leinster could/should have played better but they were not on their best day, and la Rochelle was. The best team won that final. And I might be 'old school' but I will always rate tries more than penalties. And 3 tries to nil should end any debates about this final.

Yeah because it’s full of actual Irish players. Your team is a barbarians team with three times the budget of any other team in Europe. It took you til the 79th minute to go ahead in that game and there were 20 players in that squad born in Leinster. Whereas you had the heaviest pack in the history of the competition. And that’s what it came down to. Spending your millions on over seas players who are significantly bigger than our forwards. You’re still a shit team. The fact you couldn’t get ahead til the last minute with all your resources and foreign players just proves that 😂
@@BobH-eh8wu weight, foreigners players ? One of the worst excuses I have ever seen. Firstly, l'm not a La Rochelle fan, I wouldn't even care if they were eliminated in pool stage. Secondly, just because someone is bigger doesn't mean he is better (Btw, Leinster forwards weighted 909kg while La Rochelle's weighted 925kg in this final, no significant weight advantage.) Thirdly, basically you are saying that Irish players are inferior to foreign players ? hiring foreigners doesn't make a team better. Leinster lost because La Rochelle nullified Leinstermen's plan, not because La Rochelle was heavier or has foreigners in it's squad. l don't root for La Rochelle but they don't deserve all those trashtalks. They were the underdogs and managed to beat one of the greatest club of all time. Overall in European history, Leinstermen have accomplished more than la Rochelle but people are just so upset that a rookie club beat a veteran club. It's just disappointing that some people won't admit la Rochelle was better that night and still trying to make excuses.
I won't lie. As a Leinster fan, this defeat was hard to take. The best team on the day won. No question. The question is, where do Leinster go from here? Blitzing through the Pro14/ URC and early rounds of the Heineken Cup each year just doesn't prepare us well enough when we come up against monster packs like Saracens or la Rochelle. I can't fault our players who were brave to a fault. But we need some extra foreign beef in our pack, especially in the front five. Next year the final will be in Dublin, and that could be our best chance to finally get that fifth star. Maybe the addition of the South African teams to the URC will help us long term? Congrats to O'Gara and his players. They surprised everyone and fair dues.
They have a budget 3 times bigger than any other team in Europe and couldn’t win until the 79th minute. It’s literally the same as a light heavyweight trying to fight a super heavyweight in boxing. It’s not a question of skill but of sheer size. And they were able to buy those players because they have an advantage that other teams don’t have with their enormous budget. So obviously that was going to happen. The fact they couldn’t win by more is actually embarrassing let’s be honest. Barely a french person in the team and outweighed us man for man.
BRAVO a tous ces vrais supporters irlandais, et de d'autres pays qui laissent de merveilleux commentaires même si cette année vous avez perdu. Le sport qui a vraiment de vrais fans, des connaisseurs. i was lucky enough to be present for this match in Marseille a few days ago as a Leinster supporter. La rochelle truly deserved this win here. leinster didn’t look like scoring a try at all and la rochelle really put it all on the pitch. i’m chuffed for O’Gara
Massive congratulations to La Rochelle, that was a gritty last 15 mins but you came up trumps. Welcome to the hall of European Champs and enjoy the party back home!
This is because of the "doubloons", i.e. the days when the French team and the championship teams play. Thus Toulouse, which has 9/10 of the 15 players of the national team, is in 6th place and La Rochelle, which started badly, is in 5th place. Castres and Montpellier have a good ranking but are not very competitive with La Rochelle, Toulouse and Bordeaux... This is the reason why it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, for French clubs to perform in the Top 14 and European Cup: the most difficult and longest championship + the "doubloons" + the confrontation with teams who play very little during the year and who are fresh (the "provinces" system guarantees this to the Irish for example)
But Leinster beat the “top” team in the top14 by nearly 80 points, so I don’t think it’s very representative. It’s just which french teams decide to focus on Europe and which teams focus on domestic comps
Unbelievable ! La Rochelle and Lyon have just won the two European Cups and this weekend they must compete for a qualification for the final stages of the top 14.
Disappointed as a Leinster fan, but congrats to La Rochelle and their fans, it was a fantastic effort all around, the team played great, the fans were the 16th man, thoroughly deserved. From a Leinster or rather an Irish perspective in general this just seems like another chapter in the seemingly never ending story of Irish rugby that when our teams face bigger more physical teams that are up for it on big occasions. We get bullied and all the strengths of our game fall apart and we simply just can't handle it. I don't know how we address it, we can't just grow bigger humans, but we have to figure out some way around it, maybe through psychological work, because I feel it's not the fact that we get physically bullied by bigger teams that's the worrying part, that's bound to happen, it's the effect it has on the rest our game when it does happen that is the truly worrying thing and it happens over and over again. I mean how many times have we seen it at this stage? An Irish team playing great rugby going into a big game, then gets smashed back early on by a big physical team a few times and suddenly we can't pass the ball, we're full of handling errors, constant mistakes, we just simply fall to pieces. We need to find a way to address this as a rugby nation somehow.

@@potheadtoker11 Everything has its counterpart, for me this scoring system means that rugby is played in a very conservative way and for many teams it is primary to look for the opponent's mistake passing the midfield before looking for the in goal area. And sometimes we see some games that are a punishment for the spectator.
This was a huge psychological game. To give Leinster an excuse their penalty decisions were almost too hard to turn down the 3points, any other match they would have kept procession and most likely build up tries rather than penalties. La Rochelle pushed their limits and went for tries so very hard to argue they aren't the deserved winners. The bad Omen from an Irish national perspective is that this game shows the blueprint on how to beat the Irish team, have to say I'm fearing the NZ tour at the moment
Agreed, 2/3 penalty’s 5m out, why wouldn’t they go for the try, any other day of the week Leinster are going under the sticks, so makes 0 sense they deny the chance to push ahead for the 3, but as you said, Rochelle got in thier heads, and it paid off for them..

Dudes, never underestimate the French, you have known that the Anglo-Saxons for a long time... ^^ Me? By dint of seeing and hearing that Leinster (an Irish Province team which is practically the base of the great Irish national team) was the very big favourite, logical given their career before the final, I was telling myself more and more in my heart that it was going as always, very motivated the Rochelais and the French club which had not arrived in the final by chance either and which has been one of the great teams of the very high level French TOP14 since years now. But I honestly admit that I didn't expect to see La Rochelle dominate the whole match so much, playing perfectly and like a dream on all physical and tactical levels, stifling the great Leinster team for almost 80 minutes! O_o After Toulouse last year, it's La Rochelle this year. All this shows the great richness and power of the very high French TOP14 level, without a doubt currently the strongest and most difficult national professional Rugby championship in the world, with this year the other European pro Rugby Cups also won by French clubs of the TOP14! With the Grand Slam des Bleus this year, all that further highlights the great all-round comeback and domination of French Rugby in Europe. What else dudes? 😁 Bravo et merci La Rochelle! 👍💪👏

Yh, don’t listen to those guys. As a guy with modest expectation I was utterly ashamed of their spoilt egos, especially that slogger Ger Gilroy & co.
Top 14 used to be stuck in boring conservative rugby. Now a few clubs are really playing fantastic rugby. La Rochelle, Toulouse, Bordeaux-Begles. This season the level has never been so dense with 8 clubs coming close to playoffs without really knowing who would qualify or not 2 weekends before the end with Toulon reviving a bit. Best time of the year with the excitement is pumping up, the weather getting hotter, the game faster. Everybody wants to go to the capital for the final. Love it!

French rugby is the epidom of all rugby competitions. Diverse and very high level and the most expensive rugby competitions.

Leinster is one of the best teams ever, we can't deny it but yesterday night, la Rochelle was clearly the better team.
Secondly, just because someone is bigger doesn't mean he is better (Btw, Leinster forwards weighted 909kg while La Rochelle's weighted 925kg in this final, no significant weight advantage.)
Thirdly, basically you are saying that Irish players are inferior to foreign players ? hiring foreigners doesn't make a team better.
@@BobH-eh8wu Talking about budget while IRFU is paying half of your players :D

Massive congratulations to La Rochelle, that was a gritty last 15 mins but you came up trumps. Welcome to the hall of European Champs and enjoy the party back home!
The fact that La Rochelle is not even in the top3 of top14 makes French teams even scarier
@@SB-uo9to this is probably the best rugby team Leinster have ever had but their not winners which is a shame

Fantastic final!
On est si fier de vous les gars 😭🙏 merci!
Hope La Rochelle play the super pacific champions.

For me it is incredible that in a sport that changes the rules constantly, the try is still so undervalued, the try should be worth 6 points and 1 conversion, it cannot be that a try is less than 2 penalties
Doing this would encourage foul & cynical play from defences and would result in more negative games.
@@potheadtoker11 Everything has its counterpart, for me this scoring system means that rugby is played in a very conservative way and for many teams it is primary to look for the opponent's mistake passing the midfield before looking for the in goal area. And sometimes we see some games that are a punishment for the spectator.
@Jean Llup i agree 6+2 would be perfect

This was a huge psychological game. Me?
