Old Testament God vs. New Testament God

  • Many people say God acted much differently in the Old Testament than he did in the New Testament. They say the God of the New Testament is merciful and compassionate, but in the Old Testament he is often harsh and unforgiving. A thorough look at Scripture reveals that this is not the case. God is in fact merciful and just throughout the Bible. Fr. Mike clears up a great deal of confusion between the Old and New Testaments, and shows how God has stayed quite the same since before the beginning of time until now.
    Fr. Mike addressed a similar topic a few years ago in his video, “Did God Change”.

    Problem with yahweh is he leaves no room for repentance. And he was so ready to kill, ordered his people to steal, and destroy.
    It's more than what is in view in the discussion here.
    Also Jesus contradicts yahweh many times, He even questions what kind of a father gives snakes to children asking for bread.
    Also Acts 7 says a lot about this issue, and reveals who yahweh is, whom the israelites mistakenly believed to be Elyon or the Most High.

      l r Yeah, I always found those passages questionable. Thou shalt not kill doesn’t seem to square up with that. Can’t help but think that there are parts of scripture that had a very human hand. Many who commit genocide convince themselves that it’s what God wants. 🤔

    • @paulmiller3469
      @paulmiller3469 5 років тому +7

      @@73cidalia Some of that may be allegorical. The promised land absolutely is allegorical for heaven, and the struggle to get there for a generation in the wilderness, after the baptism of crossing the sea and nourished by manna, is allegorical as well. The intent to have this people live separated from those who worship idols and sacrifice their infants may not be literal wars of conquest. By the way, who led the Israelites into the promised land? Joshua, right? And what would that name be in Greek?

    • @siegfried.7649
      @siegfried.7649 5 років тому +2

      @@paulmiller3469 I know you say this with good intentions, but I don't think you can assume so easily that these passages are purely allegorical. There may be some sort of allegorical dimension to what is being said in Scripture, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. The book of Joshua, specifically, was written as a history book, so clearly, the intention of the inspired author was not to describe an allegory but rather historical events. The same goes for the books of Judges, Kings and the Maccabees. All of those are books recounting the history of the people of Israel, and so I'd be very careful of assuming that they are solely speaking in the allegorical or symbolic sense.

    • @paulmiller3469
      @paulmiller3469 5 років тому +5

      @@siegfried.7649 I never said 'purely allegorical.' The Catholic Church teaches that Sacred Scripture should be read in four senses, and that any given verse can have multiple meanings, even beyond what the human author intended (even history books). Additionally, the literal and allegorical sense are objective, meaning that there is one right interpretation. (The other two, moral and anagogical, are subjective, meaning they can be applied to different situations in different ways.) But just because it is a history book does not mean everything in those verses literally happened. Look at Judges, for instance. And here's the kicker - if the human author intended the story as an allegory, then the allegory is literal sense and not allegorical sense.

    • @paulmiller3469
      @paulmiller3469 5 років тому +2

      @@siegfried.7649 Besides, as you may know, there are literal contradictions and literal mistakes in the history books. Things in Kings that don't correspond to things in Chronicles, for instance, not to mention when names and timelines don't mesh with known history. The Catholic Church doesn't pretend otherwise, and one of the English translations (NAB, which is the translation on the USCCB website) does a pretty good job of pointing out those instances in the notes that are printed alongside the verses.

    The big question I get from most is that if god is perfect and his judgement is perfect then why did God change "the rules" so to speak from old to new testament?

    • @whyyouneedmyname2434
      @whyyouneedmyname2434 5 років тому +3

      Why is God so different in the Old Testament than He is in the New Testament?
      At the very heart of this question lies a fundamental misunderstanding of what both the Old and New Testaments reveal about the nature of God. Another way of expressing this same basic thought is when people say, "The God of the Old Testament is a God of wrath while the God of the New Testament is a God of love." The fact that the Bible is God's progressive revelation of Himself to us through historical events and through His relationship with people throughout history might contribute to misconceptions about what God is like in the Old Testament as compared to the New Testament. However, when one reads both the Old and the New Testaments, it becomes evident that God is not different from one testament to another and that God's wrath and His love are revealed in both testaments.
      For example, throughout the Old Testament, God is declared to be a "compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness," (Exodus 34:6; Numbers 14:18; Deuteronomy 4:31; Nehemiah 9:17;Psalm 86:5, 15; 108:4; 145:8; Joel 2:13). Yet in the New Testament, God's loving-kindness and mercy are manifested even more fully through the fact that "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Throughout the Old Testament, we also see God dealing with Israel the same way a loving father deals with a child. When they willfully sinned against Him and began to worship idols, God would punish them. Yet, each time He would deliver them once they had repented of their idolatry. This is much the same way God deals with Christians in the New Testament. For example, Hebrews 12:6 tells us that "the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."
      In a similar way, throughout the Old Testament we see God's judgment and wrath poured out on sin. Likewise, in the New Testament we see that the wrath of God is still "being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness" (Romans 1:18). So, clearly, God is no different in the Old Testament than He is in the New Testament. God by His very nature is immutable (unchanging). While we might see one aspect of His nature revealed in certain passages of Scripture more than other aspects, God Himself does not change.
      As we read and study the Bible, it becomes clear that God is the same in the Old and New Testaments. Even though the Bible is 66 individual books written on two (or possibly three) continents, in three different languages, over a period of approximately 1500 years by more than 40 authors, it remains one unified book from beginning to end without contradiction. In it we see how a loving, merciful, and just God deals with sinful men in all kinds of situations. Truly, the Bible is God's love letter to mankind. God's love for His creation, especially for mankind, is evident all through Scripture. Throughout the Bible we see God lovingly and mercifully calling people into a special relationship with Himself, not because they deserve it, but because He is a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in loving-kindness and truth. Yet we also see a holy and righteous God who is the Judge of all those who disobey His Word and refuse to worship Him, turning instead to worship gods of their own creation (Romans chapter 1).
      Because of God's righteous and holy character, all sin, past, present, and future, must be judged. Yet God in His infinite love has provided a payment for sin and a way of reconciliation so that sinful man can escape His wrath. We see this wonderful truth in verses like 1 John 4:10: "This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." In the Old Testament, God provided a sacrificial system whereby atonement could be made for sin. However, this sacrificial system was only temporary and merely looked forward to the coming of Jesus Christ who would die on the cross to make a complete substitutionary atonement for sin. The Savior who was promised in the Old Testament is fully revealed in the New Testament. Only envisioned in the Old Testament, the ultimate expression of God's love, the sending of His Son Jesus Christ, is revealed in all its glory in the New Testament. Both the Old and the New Testaments were given "to make us wise unto salvation" (2 Timothy 3:15). When we study the Testaments closely, it is evident that God "does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17).

    Hello Fr. Mike, I have read the bible almost non-stop since I became a christian, but I am having such a hard time accepting the old testament. The new testament, even the anger of Jesus, is easy for me to accept. The God of the old testament seems to be burning with anger and ready to destroy constantly. Impatient with his people and vengeful. Needing constant sacrifices and jealous. There's lists and lists of nsmes, numbers, sacrificial items, cities, animals and people destroyed. I can't seem to accept it. But the words of JESUS make sense to me and I can accept them. I don't understand how god is the same yesterday, today and forever.

      They are different Gods, I and many others have come to that conclusion. The Old Testament is essentially an amalgam of older tribal stories taken from Sumer and other ancient civilizations. The Jews (imo) adopted it and claimed to be the "chosen" people, etc. The God in the OT is egotistical, violent, jealous, and even murderous...Yahweh. When Jesus came, he never mentioned this God, he specifically mentions the Father, over and over and over again. He even rebukes the Jews for how they worship. Think about it, when Jesus was asked about the commandments, he says to follow the last five, not the first five, which revolve around the OT God and a certain level of ego. Trust Jesus is what I've chosen to do for now.

    Who is Yahweh? Refer to 2 Samuel 24:1 "and again the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah" Now cross-reference this to 1 Chronicles 21:1 "And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel". Also
    Gen 3:1-8 "Satan came in the form of a HISSING SERPENT", Isaiah 7:18 "And it shall come to pass in that day, that YAHWEH shall HISS".
    The mystery of the ages which has blinded and confused the Christian world these past 2000+ years is that the OT is a Jewish book of stories about 2 gods, their tribal god called Yahweh, and the true God, the Father which Jesus came to reveal and to save us from the condemnation of Yahweh.
    Why do you think Yahweh gave them the 10 commandments? The law kills like Paul said because it's a setup! No one can keep them, so Yahweh is guaranteed to bring death to ALL mankind (The wages of sin is death). Jesus beat him at his own game by "fulfilling" all of them and being killed sinless! Why do you think Jesus rose from the dead? because he didn't earn the punishment of death! Death could not hold him to any sin!
    There are two ways to know which god the OT is referring to at any time. 1. look at the original word for God, Lord, and see if it is Yahweh or EL (EL is the Father). 2. The Father (True God) is love, cannot lie, has no darkness in Him, does not want sacrifices, and much more, Yahweh is the complete opposite, he comes to steal, kill, lie and destroy.
    Look it up yourselves and be free of the religious matrix.
    Peace.

    I will make a claim for Christians:
    what if your ignorance of the Quran is just the same as what Jew.s do with the Gospel?
    if you don't know, we as Muslims believe in Moses and Jesus as prophets.
    Moses came with Torah, then
    Jesus came with Gospel as confirming and completing what was in the Torah, then
    both books have changed, after that
    Mohamed came with the Quran as the last revelation and a miracle. -peace be upon all the messengers-.
    and there is a lot of evidence for that, one of them is:
    The Quran is the only book in the entire world that has not changed for more than 1400 years.
    This is confirmed by the verse: ''We have, without doubt, sent down the Quran; and surely We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).
    2- It has been memorized by millions of people.
    This confirmed also by another verse:
    "And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will be mindful?".
    I just want you to reflect within yourself sincerely and think: what if this person tells the truth? what if we really do the same as Jew.s do? everyone has their own responsibility to find the truth, don't just count on what you found your fathers following or believe what the media says.

    I left Catholicism precisely due to really reading and studying the Bible. Definitely not a place to find moral guidance. Forcing a victim to marry her rapist, stoning people to death, beating salves, etc.... Sure doesn’t sound like a caring father to me. Sounds more like a story written by humans.
    And the “chosen people“ part of the Old Testament.... dead give away right there. These are the writings of a civilization of people desperate to gain more significance, importance, and superiority to other civilizations.

      The reality here is you are dealing with an entity that created, linear time, quantum mechanics, dark energy and dark matter to name a few things. These things are not easy to do and take a great amount of intelligence to do. We will skip over a "linear time" argument for now and focus on a more simple concept of free will. God knew by giving humans free will sooner or later we would do something he did not approve of (this doesn't have to have a label it is simply God disagreeing with our choice). If Adam and Eve never did anything wrong only they would ever be allowed to have sex because everyone else is blood related as brother or sister and the phrase "go multiply and be fruitful" is going to be limited in the extreme. But anyway by not doing something God approves of God decided he CHOSE to apply a punishment not to just 2 people as he should have done, no, he CHOSE to apply that to 90 billion humans and counting. That's a staggering overreaction from a creature that is this powerful, and then he doubles down and says "I've got to kill someone to put it all right"???? I'm sorry but this is a God that created and understands altruism but shows normal explains why the actions of 2 people has to have a physical manifestation of punishment automatically applied to the entirety of the human race. Sin, which is what doing something that God doesn't like, is an opinion so you need to explain why God chose to take his opinion and instead of focusing on the 2 people who did something wrong why he applied that to 90 billion and counting.
      The reality is he didn't, Gensis is an allegory tale, it is not a factual account of what happened (if you need to know more you need to understand linear time and it's effects and consequences).

Those who didn't need saving, were a blessing but Gods greatest glory was to show the people he was God and to win their hearts and minds so that they can return to the kingdom. Hmmm, in reading the Old Testament, I see stories describing an entity that first gives “do not kill” order in the 10 commandments and then turns around and orders the Israelites to kill thousands of people, including women and children, left and right. Also, another example, Cain killed his brother and lived. However, when a guy during the Exodus picked up a few sticks during Sabbath, god ordered that he would be stoned to death. Also when the poor Israelites started complaining in the dessert about lack of food and water, they got serpents and stones. Hmmm, this to me not only is NOT justice, it’s scary, immoral, beyond any kind of ethics. No wonder St. Paul emphasizes that the god of this world is evil itself. And Jesus Himself comments: “what kind of father would give his children serpents to play and stones to eat??” For sure, Jesus is THE TRUE WAY TO THE TRUE GOD. And that is the God of Love, not the character mentioned in the Old Testament, who pretends to be God while killing people left and right for the slightest offenses.

I converted to LCMC Lutheran several years ago...moved and then attended a Methodist Church. I gravitate toward Pope Francis and the way he seems to emulate Christ. I've been doing a 1 year Bible reading plan with my sister. I had not fully read through the books of law in a long time. Truth be told, I do see a huge contradiction in the way God is in these books as opposed to Jesus' mercy... I found myself understanding the Pharasises and Sadusises behavior when Christ arrived...really can you blame them...their religionius tradition was one of laws and rules...which followed made you obedient and not subject to the wrath of God. I can see where you get the Old Testament God being a just God who loved his people through the book of Job...he's harsh but loving... But, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers... Is pretty rough... It almost makes God look like a being I wouldn't like very much.... I understand correction....but a lot of these practices were torturous... Drinking bitter water of a woman who had an affair to cause her pain and become barren... Etc... The list goes on. Having multiple wives/ compubines and then casting them aside when the head wife is jealous. Killing full people groups and even tricking them in some cases to eventually kill them. I'm feeling an incongruence. This incongruence has also been felt significantly by me as I watched Christian leaders defend and back Trump the last five years. Then the emergence of QAnon, and it's weird mix with Christianity. It's very unsettling and has me wondering what is Truth.

He spoke to Moses face-to-face (Exodus 33:11), walked through the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:8), and visited Abraham (Genesis 18). However, in the New Testament, God was not omniscient. "No one had seen God at any time" (John 1:18). This leads me to believe that God had changed; once needing scouts to survey Sodom and Gomorrah, to now knowing everything (1 John 3:20). However, God doesn't change (James 1:17)-- how am I to make sense of this?

The same is said for God in the New Testament. He could've built His Church and Compiled Scripture all in an instant. In the Old Testament, he was the God of the Jews, who he chose. So what changed to make him accept all of humanity as his people? Furthermore, doesn’t this change in fact make it seem that God does change? Thank you so much!

    If you want to know EURO Christian religion, read the New Testament. But to know the LORD (ABBA, YHWH) and the MASHIAH (Christ) YAHshuah (IESU, YESU) then read the Epistles of YUDE, SIMON(Peter), JACOB (James), YOHANA (John), and Books of REVELATION, HEBREWS, SEPTUAGINTA (Old Testament). The LORD "HATES" ALL god- creature cults, and does NOT appreciate being referred to as a god creature. For they are blasphemous usurpers of his GLORY, praise, recognition. These are what the MASHIAH YAHSHUAH and the LORD STAND AGAINST FOR. HAVING ALL THE COMPASSION, TRUTH, DISCIPLINE NEEDED TO FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT. TRUTH versus LIES. For Christos being the LOGOS does not contradict the HOLY SCRIPTURES (Septuaginta) which are "INFALLIBLE" REVELATIONS. EVERYTHING, ALL, that is about the good, bad, evil on earth and about the schemes of the evil ones. All is revealed. B. I B. L. E.= BACKING UP INFINITY BEST LIFE EVER!

    One big difference is this, Mathew 19:8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard.
    But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
    Stating that, there is another side to the coin on this. Many moons ago, the medical field noticed that there was considerably less STDs among Jews than the general population.
    So it was theorized of why that is, is because Jews are circumcised. So hospitals advised parents of new born enfants to be circumcised. Rabbis disagreed with this finding.
    Their argument was that really matters is remaining loyal and abstinent rather than going astray, which no one, at the time, paid any attention too.
    It came out and was proven that being circumcised does not prevent one way or the other of getting or not getting an STD

    The New Testament is the continuation of the Old Testament. In both books is the same God. John 3:16-18
    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not judged; but he who does not believe has already been judged, because he has not believed in the Name of the only Son of God. Through these words, John shows us that God is justice and gave us Jesus to show us (to see) that He (Jesus) represents His (God's) feelings for us. Because sometimes we need tangible things. ( John 20 27-29 ) 27. Then he said to Thomas: “Bring here your finger and look at my hands and bring your hand and put it in my side; and be not faithless, but faithful."
    28. In response, Thomas said to Him: "My Lord and my God!"
    29. "Tomo," Jesus said to him, "because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, but have believed."
    Jesus is the word but he is not our judge. ONLY GOD WILL JUDGE US

    were solely based on justice and God's law with no mercy. The new covenant with Christ having subjected the demands of justice with His extended arm of mercy shows us how the preferred kingdom of God will look like eternally, with God's law and justice meted out by a merciful king and judge. This explanation is given us in the story of David, Solomon and Adonijah. Adonijah (Jehovah is my Lord) is the rightful heir to David's kingdom, yet he was a man of war like his father David and also Jehovah (Ex 15:3). The Lord told David however, that Solomon (Peace) would be king as he would be peaceful and the throne would be established with him forever. This typifies how The LORD as Jehovah the law giver was heir but not the preferred King of the Kingdom of God. But, The LORD as Messiah, The Christ, the Prince of Peace, He will rule and reign forever the Kingdom of God with mercy and healing in His wings. Without our New Testament God the brutality of the law and justice of God would rule and reign. The good news is Christ!

    I swear 90% of Christian’s have NOT read the Bible at all. I think the question is why was god asking Adam and Eve where they were? Or asking Cain where able was? Was god seeing if they’d confess? 🤷‍♂️ the Bible doesn’t say. God seems present and communicating to his people directly, while in the new testament he doesn’t talk, not even to Mary the mother. It’s such a strange thing. But the answer to that is clear to. Not all stories in the old testament (and Paul’s books) aren’t historically accurate. It’s to teach a lesson. Example is the story of Job is about how bad things happen to good people and it’s not their fault. The Bible is so fascinating and widely misinterpreted.

    The answer as to why God is different in the Old Testament (Jewish Torah) compared to the New Testament (Good News of Christ) is self-evident if you read Scripture:
    No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
    John 1:18
    39 They (The Jews) answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do what Abraham did, 40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this is not what Abraham did. 41 You do what your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came forth from God; I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
    John 8:39-44
    54 Jesus answered the Jews, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is your God. 55 But you have not known him; I know him. If I said, I do not know him, I should be a liar like you; but I do know him and I keep his word.
    John 8:54-55
    4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.
    2 Corinthians 4:4
    13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 instead of giving heed to Jewish myths or to commands of men who reject the truth.
    Titus 1:13-14
    Jesus comes from the Father, the God of Truth, Love, Forgiveness. The Jewish Old Testament refers to YHWH Elohim.

    Actually, I studied the Bible and theology very closely, mentored by university level scholars, including members of the Jesuit order.
    God has not changed but the view of him has. Probably the best way to contrast the Old with the New Testament views of God is that the Old Testament God was seen as one or several tribal deities in a polytheistic world view. This is very clear in the Pentateuch, Kings and Chronicles. The New Testament view of God is influenced by the Persians (who freed the Jews from Babylonian captivity) and introduced a new concept of monotheism involving an all good creator or the “Wise Lord” and an opposing evil force “Angra Mainyu” who we know as Satan. In the time of Jesus, Zoroastrianism was the state religion of the neighboring Parthian Empire and continued to influence the Jews and religious thinking in the East. Many of the teachings of Jesus reflect this.

    And also, why we have a purgatory?
    I have more questions, but I think that would be fine.
    I already answered them and as the time goes by, it becomes a debate (but only in UA-cam and Facebook). I told them to do this in face to face. And I told them not to worry about all the expenses they have cost because I will pay all of it. But I will pay only if they win.
    But they refused it and gone like nothing's happened. No more reply. hehehe
    I hate it when other religions try to destroy the other religions. Because that is not what Jesus told and teach us.
    But I love it when I see that they care, help etc etc. . . And I am so proud of what they did.
