  • A few weeks ago, friend of the shop Mike Huml stopped by to let us know about Uniclutch.
    This is a fully contained twin disc clutch that has some very interesting design characteristics. The most significant of which being that it is a modular design that can be adapted to work on a number of applications.
    Mike is using this clutch in his 2023 WRX, and we are testing it in Carter's 2014 WRX as well.
    What is most interesting to us is that this clutch has more capacity than most push-style clutch options for the WRX/BRZ 5 and 6 speed, has very good pedal feel and range of engagement, but it also very affordable.
    The clutch kit that we are testing here only costs $824.00 as we recorded this.
    Here is a link to this clutch on our site if you would like to see more information:

    Thanks for watching and we will follow up in a few more months to give you long-term results on this clutch.
    Stay Tuned!

    Thank you for testing. Really interested for a road driving video if that’s even possible. I don’t mind some noise so long as I understand them going into it.
    Also with the extra long spring and isolators inside of it, do you feel like it’s “too soft”? Just wondering if the sport model would be more what I want based of feel. My car is only 350 ftlbs so would fall into the original model. I do race my car and don’t want a lot of slop.

      On a high level - function and pedal feel truly are top notch and the thing absolutely stands up to their claim of less effort for more clamping. There are some interesting issues and sounds but to be honest, it’s my first twin disc I’ve ever used so I do struggle when I try to figure what sounds are indicative of a real problem and what may just be something I’m not used to hearing and is hard to convey on a video clip :/
      Despite the noises, I’ve been sending it anyways as I do believe it’s just normal noise, and it hasn’t failed to deliver yet

      @@itzdaxx1154 been looking at one. Does it sound what you imagine a twin disk would?
      Which version did you go with?
      Also where in the scale of stock to wild would you rate your motor tq?
      Really looking at this but it’s so new I have no one to ask personally.

      @@dogle9258 I feel you. I really took a leap of faith, I picked it up like 2 weeks after the US release with zero info for WRX or Subaru specific info but I’m glad I did. The pedal feel is better than stock. I’m also running a dark matter x dm-2 shifter with Cobb shift plate, everything feels like butter.
      In terms of the noise - it’s weird. I’m not sure what I expected, because twin disc is brand new to me personally but I really only get noise in 3rd gear and I’ll guesstimate around 1200-4000 rpm. It can happen in other scenarios but it’s more sporadic, the 3rd gear noise is pretty consistent though whether it’s run for a while and hot or still cold. If I had to describe it….it sounds like rough-ish? E.G. maybe like if you had a traditional clutch and a poorly surfaced flywheel so sandpapery when they rub….its hard to describe but its the closest I can get you to what I hear.
      I did do some research thinking I effed the install maybe but I did hear similar reports. Now while I wouldn’t rule out that something isn’t borked, so far 3-4 months later the noise hasn’t gotten worse and the car doesn’t seem to be having issues or exhibiting worrysome behavior. I will say despite considering maybe having a performance shop check it out, it’s so new im not sure they would know either just by listening and I’m not gonna have them pull it to inspect.
      At the end of the day, it runs great, feels great, and the noise is tolerable. As long as the trans doesn’t sound like it’ll explode or just drop off the car (which it doesn’t) I’m just trying to retrain my ear and get used to it.
      I’ve got full bolt-ons and running E60 with FMIC, I’d guesstimate maybe 380 ft/lbs at peak. Uniclutch recommended the 650 ft/lbs sport model for my car just stock, and that’s what I did. It seems a little odd because I typically wouldn’t want to be that far under the torque rating but without much info other than traditional common wisdom, I went with their recommended model based on a few things that I read which said the uniclutch should still work fine despite the 650 rating 🤷‍♂️ is it the source of the noise? Perhaps, but other cars have it too so I’m not super worried.
      Overall, worth it. It feels fantastic, lighter than OEM pedal somehow and seems future proof and durable

      @@itzdaxx1154 thanks! I really feel like I should write more in response to so much good info. That’s exactly what I was asking for and thanks for attempting to explain what the sound even is. I do expect some noise as even in the paid videos they say “quietest twin disk” so I figured something would be there. Just wanted to know what is normal.

    • @Levibetz
      @Levibetz 14 днів тому +1

      You should never adjust your clutch pedal unless something goes wrong between the pedal cluster and the master cylinder. This isn't cable days, the important relationship between the pedal and master is to set it up so you have minimal free play between the pedal and master, but you are not preloading the master, which will cause your clutch to not be able to retract.

    • @xtingtangx
      @xtingtangx 14 днів тому

      @Levibetz I put a twin disc clutchmasters and didn't adjust the pedal, which over extended the pressure plate and warped the discs..

      @Levibetz 14 днів тому

      @@xtingtangx Ah well yeah that's another thing to check, you'd want to setup a pedal stop for that though, the freeplay shouldn't be adjusted IMO.

    Doesn’t work for the STI 6 speed?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  15 днів тому +5

      Thanks for the question. Currently this is only available as a "Push" style clutch, so it wouldn't work on the "Pull" style STI 6-speed.
      I am told that an option for the STI is on its way though, so hopefully it will be an option in the next couple of months.

      We have the pull style for the STI in production now. ETA is early fall 2024. Otherwise, have to use a push-pull conversion kit. Pull style will only be available in the Track version (as of the day I am typing this).

    Now I've gotta wait for 6M version🙄 Moving right along, between an oem helical front diff on a 2008+ STI 6M DCCD trans and a similar quaife front diff, which would you choose and why since they're the same price?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  14 днів тому +1

      Thanks for your question. There is not much of a difference between the OE TBD and Quaife. I think I'd stick with the factory one since you all ready have it. If you were going to switch, I'd say look at Cusco, but that is really more for off-road, or track use. The Torque Biasing differential is better for daily/street use.
      Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  14 днів тому

      @@vannevels6758 Those kinds of differentials tent to be really durable. If you were hearing a lot of bearing noise, etc. I'd say that you would want to tear the transmission down and inspect the differential. But for the most part, the front diff tends to just work.
      What symptoms are you having?

    • @vannevels6758
      @vannevels6758 14 днів тому +1

      @@FlatironsTuning despite an alignment, the car pulls to the right under moderate and up acceleration which I attribute to the front diff. I got STI drivetrain swap into my 06 OBXT. There's no noise besides gear whine. The trans has 160K+- on it so I was getting your thoughts on it.

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  14 днів тому

      @@vannevels6758 Gotcha. Pulling like that could be a lot of things, and the front differential would be quite low on my list of possible causes. A TBD would not usually cause that. I'd guess that suspension bushings being worn or allowing more movement would be the most likely cause. That wouldn't show up on an alignment.
      Definitely take a good look at all of the front and rear bushings. On the Outbacks, the front rear lower control arm bushings are quite prone to failing and it would cause pulling like you are describing, etc.
      Hope that helps!
