Thanks for the tips James, very useful, I'm doing it in September. I totally agree on the ultralight thing, I'm aiming for around 13kg which I train with, including a chair, as I'm nearly 60 and that is something I have come to really value having. I've done the Haute route in Switzerland so I know what to expect with steep climbs and false summits. I'm really looking forward to this one, it's right up my strasse.
Finding these vids helpful for our own trek, thanks! I'm thinking of getting a filter, mad you say about South Downs, my first hike was South Downs in a heatwave and I've carried at least 4 litres water since! Scarred man it was like a desert, 13 years ago I think and we still talk about it! Totally good with drinking from tarns etc but it feels so wrong to not carry loads - you're inspiring me to jump out the comfort zone for this hike. And SHOPS wow, Coast to Coast sounds very different!
Followed you across 1 mth later and had watched so many videos before and since - I did a little lazier trip - organised with a guide (no map or compass for me), hotel to hotel (no tent and food provided), luggage transfers (only carrying lunch, water and waterproofs). As I live 4 mile from St Bees, the first couple of days were already well known - 1 pub and 1 shop (which shuts fairly early) between St Bees and Ennerdale so great advice about learning the route. Not the Cumbrian Way (that goes N/S Ulverston to Carlisle) - the Cleveland Way at the start of the North York Moors (and a short distance of the Pennine Way at Keld) - not many signs on the Cumbrian fells - easy to miss the route to Kidsty and end up going up High St. Loved your midge protection when you camped at Ennerdale. As for doing the route again, I am considering organising my own hotel-hotel reverse trip (I'll have more to carry as I'll need all my clothes) - but I can walk from RHB to SB and then walk straight into my front door.
All sound advice here James. Im going to be attempting this myself next May and found your series of videos really enjoyable and informative so thanks for making them and maybe I'll see you on the route next year ;-)
really good advice, no skipping over the tough bits and very concise - thanks
Glad it helped.
Your presentation style is fantastic, very relaxed and genuine.
