Bowser's laugh is actually made by phase distorting and slowing down a sound file from an asset pack that Nintendo used frequently in the N64 era. By complete coincidence, it's Charles Martinet!
I heard the rumour that it was Charles Martinet about a year or two ago and it has since spread like wildfire but I have not come across a single reliable source actually saying that it is Martinet, so I doubt it's him
@@thundergodgamer118 you mean the secret slide in tall tall mountain? Climb up till ya jump across a waterfall and pass a cloud enemy. There’s a wall that ripples and can jump into it (the DS remake includes a trail of coins to it)
@@BR-jw7pm really? I had this game since the first day it came out in 1996 and I still have it for my N64. I have it for my Nintendo switch as well. I don't remember that slide. I'm Going to try and find it, thanks a lot 🎮🎮
I got the star from the slide without going through the slide. If you jump off of the cliff and kick in the air Mario will wind up inside the little area where the star is. I actually did it by mistake. A enemy hit me and when I fell off of the cliff I kicked in the air with Mario and i wind up getting the star.
Here’s an actual good note: Speaking about that glitch, in the Final Bowser fight, I don’t know if it only happens in the first initial Japanese version of the game, but if you do that glitch by throwing Bowser at the one of the bombs blowing him far away, he actually jumps back in the arena, but if he lands on one of the weak spots of the arena, he somehow jumps off the arena committing suicide, and he doesn’t jump back in, so Bowser will be permanently soft locked, but you can still move around, but Bowser won’t jump back in unless you like die by falling. I found that very funny tbh lol xD
The Creepy Boo Laugh seems to be the result of one of the outdoor ambient track's Boo laughs being pitched and slowed down when it begins in the same frame as the game switches to the lower-pitched, lower-tempo _interior_ ambient track. The Creepy Whispers also sound like the wind effect receiving the same treatment. Maybe they're less intentional and more happy coincidences?
You nailed it! The same thing is happening to the wind. I wouldn't be surprised if it was picked up in testing but they decided to leave it in anyway :P
The whisper sounds like it might be the same sample as the background wind sound effects! Maybe the MIDI notes for the indoor music get loaded in before the MIDI instruments’ patch numbers get updated, so the wind/Boo laughter instruments have a very brief opportunity to play a note they weren’t intended to play?
5:58 I never noticed until now but the level of detail on the doorknob of the doors swaps to a higher polygon count model for a second or two while the door is being opened by Mario. Weird!
4:56 I didn't know about this, and it's actually quite brilliant. Saved them a tiny bit of space on the cartridge too I bet since they didn't have to create another sound file. 5:54 Big Boo's Haunt just got a little bit creepier then it already was.
I could figure out what the root of the Boo laugh was but never knew there was a consistant setup to get it working, super neat stuff! SM64 has some funky pitch bending stuff going on, even pausing and unpausing messes with music and sound effects
The laugh is apparently Charles Martinet's laugh. It was either from a sound effects CD a team would use to make sounds or it was audition tape reused.
For a future video, regarding the enhanced triple jump from talking to Yoshi, at the third jump you won't receive fall damage (the initial third as well as the smaller jump that is automatically executed when landing the third). Also you're even invulnerable from lava and insta kill sand (only after landing the initial third jump).
I don't know if that "tapping to climb slopes" trick is present in DS, but I do know you can actually crouch walk to do it in that version. Be careful to not stop as doing so will cause you to slide down.
The hangable ceiling in the castle courtyard is curious. Might this be because it was simpler to load the properties from one type of ceiling instead of multiple, and since they had the wooden bridge they needed that type? Or might it just be leftover design from early builds since there's no real reason that any of the bridges need to be hangable either.
Cool vid! I think that the 'whisper' in nr 10 is the bowser laugh sample one time slowed down than normal bowser laugh. kudo's in finding all this strange facts😎
Just when you think you've seen EVERYTHING in this game, new stuff STILL pops up! I've been playing Super Mario 64 for over 20 years, and it still amazes me how much more is in it! :D
I feel like I knew the underside of the bridge was hangable, but I didn't put two and two together to assume it would be the case for all ceilings in the courtyard. What the heck did they make that castle out of?
Nice, i always learn at least one new thing through your videos. :) By the way: before fighting King Bob-omb you avoid those two rolling balls in the pit by the mountain, right? however after defeating (or murdering, i guess) him the pit will actually contain three balls.. One of the bob-omb buddies even remarks that 'the king is a dud' after the fight -scary

Wow, i guess that's one trick used for saving N64 resources...😅
I didn't know about it before, but it adds to the atmosphere of Big Boo's Haunt, even if it was unintentional.
Besides that distorted creepy laugh, like it said, you could sometimes hear that disturbing whisper instead. Like WHAT THE HECK. 😲😲😲

I was just thinking that it might be a side effect of the crossfading from exterior to interior ambience.
yea, maybe its that. its nice to see others knowing how the game works
I've been testing this glitch and studying it ever since the all stars version came out, and your theory is the same as mine!
The Bowser / Boo laugh using the same FX Sound could explain the same strategy used in Ocarina of Time with the Poes and Ganondorf.
The REALLY cool thing about that laugh, is that it turns out it's Charles Martinet! It's from an old set of stock sound effects that he contributed to
It actually does sound like him... when you listen to him in interviews, he kind of laugh like that when he does his Mario voice lol
I've heard that for a while now, but still can't find a reliable source.

The dead end skull path has an invisible wall, to prevent the player slipping an huge portion of the slide course...

the bowser surviving the bomb thing: can you do that with all 4 bombs and basically glitch yourself into an unbeatable boss?
Yes.
And this was then patched on the DS version, by making one bomb mine respawn, if all mines are destroyed...
