  • For every new bike we review we take a look at a used option. We've just come back from the launch of the Ducati 959 • Ducati 959 Panigale Re... so here's a slightly more affordable option, the 848.

    Awesome review, and thank you for realising that the people (like myself) that can't afford a new bike and don't want to sell their soul for finance need bike advice as well! Also, it's nice to see the admission from within the industry that you don't need to spend stupid amounts of money to have a proper laugh on two wheels. Thanks Bike World!

    I think doing a short review of an alternative more affordable way to go, for those who don’t want to shell out big bucks for the latest bikes, is a very mindful and supportive service, which you extend to your loyal following. I see some here complaining about the shortened review time, but it’s totally understandable as this isn’t really a New Bike Review. Besides, Luke manages to provide all the really pertinent information in a short block of time. It’s good to have someone who knows these bikes in such great detail! Thumbs UP!

    I must agree with this review. I bought a 2012 848EVO Corse SE and I absolutely LOVE the bike. The bike is an absolute joy to ride! I've only had a single issue with my bike and it seems what it likes to slip into a false neutral while using the quick-shifter :( So far I haven't been able to find anyone (ducati mechanic) who can resolve the problem. I've only done some minor modifications, a Zard slip-on, racing air filter, bar ends, rear sets, an ECU flash, and this spring I'll be switching the rear 39T sprocket for a 41T sprocket (seeing as how top speed is not a concern of mine, I'd rather have a better torque ratio!!) :) An absolute fabulous bike...LOVE it!!

    LOL to the rumor about Ducatis failing in rain. I rode my 1098 over 1,100 miles from Dallas to Toledo overnight in the rain the second week I owned it back in 2007.

    • @kenwu7
      @kenwu7 8 років тому +4

      how do you ride over 11 hours over night??? and that's assuming you were at a constant pace of 100mph. And it wasn't rainy from dallas to Ohio I'm just going to say that 😂

    • @MotoErgoSum
      @MotoErgoSum 8 років тому +6

      kenwu7
      Started out at 9pm, finally got in sometime around noon. That's 1,100 MILES in around 15-16 hours. That's an average of 65-70mph. Not hard to do when I was hopped up on caffeine, jamming to music, and there were practically no cops for most of the trip. Oklahoma has 90mph speed limits on the turnpike in some areas.
      It started pouring just north of Dallas and I had 50ft visibility over the border into Oklahoma. The rain didn't stop until about 3-4am and then the damn hot July summer sun dried everything out shortly after sunrise in Missouri. Continued through Illinois and caught another rain in Indiana where I realized my Frog Toggs had blown out from wrist to waist. Threw them in the garbage and just dealt with the light rain until the Ohio border where it let up again.
      Because I had Bose earbuds that didn't seal all the way to block out wind noise, my ears rang for three days and my entire body was sore. I learned some valuable lessons that trip and the corrections I made for the return (in nice mild dry weather) was a cakewalk by comparison. I wouldn't recommend riding in a thunderstorm like that, but if you HAVE to, it's not a big deal so long as you stay easy on the throttle.

    • @kenwu7
      @kenwu7 8 років тому +3

      Great story. Plus 1 on the ear plugs. I started wearing them last season and they make so much difference. I rode a 2hour trip once and my back was killing me so i need better posture I'm thinking. That and riding specific exercises done in the off season similar to the pros. Stay safe man!!

    • @MotoErgoSum
      @MotoErgoSum 8 років тому +2

      kenwu7
      One major thing that helped both legs of that trip was wearing an Axio hard shell backpack. Let me relax my back but maintain decent posture. Shure e3c earbuds saved my hearing on the way back and there was no exhaustion for the return trip. Amazing how much something as simple as wind noise can cause muscles to tighten up and all these tertiary pains on a long road trip.
      Totally agree that good diet, exercise, and training to upgrade the rider is worth a lot more than any one upgrade on the machine.

    also just bought a 2020 ducati cafe racer. it is a more relaxed easy going and forgiving bike than the 848. i enjoy taking it around town for errands and cruising. Then taking the 848 out for carving up the country back roads and setting personal land speed records around the Houston, Galveston and Austin areas. Riding to Austin on the 848 I do have to take a break midway to give my butt a rest. I will mention this service isn't cheap but I am very religious of maintaining them and keeping all service records with my local dealer. FYI The 2021 Austin MotoGP has been pushed back to the last quarter of 2021

      I can just compare it to a Gsxr 750 and must admit that it is indeed a bit less comfortable to ride (especially with someone else on the back), but not as much that i would say it's less "useful" in the city. You will get used to it quite fast and it's so much more fun with just 2 cylinders. But personally I wouldn't take it for just a city ride, it's made for other roads.

    the valve service intervals have increased, but the belts still need 24 month replacement. There is no advantage to desmo and rubber valve drive belts, which is why no one but Ducati uses this antiquated design. Read user forums, they still have issues with electrical components, and even the new Panigales do not clear coat the gas tank. Better, but for the money, buyers deserve better quality and better engineering.

      aluisious agreed. A few spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, new oil, Brake and clutch fluid and check the break pads. We aren't talking silly money. Although if I had a Desmo I would send it to ducati to do, but seeing as my bike is not brand new or a high end bike, I will do it myself.

    848 'Cors', a 'LeoVince' exhaust... gosh, Brits should be prohibited from pronouncing Italian words. Just hold up signs with the words.

      +static age so you're comparing a japanese 4 cilinder liter bike with 180-200 hp to a V-twin with around 125 hp... Ok.

      +Average Guitar Player its the same price as my bike with less power and more expensive parts.. yes it looks good but thats it.

    I just can't watch people who act like they no it all, don't know his dude so I can really judge him, but I will tho, he seem like the type of guy that would tell you he invented the motorcycle if you gave him a chance, he seem to jumped up, the way he leaning on the bike and yapping away is just annoying, and before anyone comments to me, I will say it first..I just as annoying as him that's why I'm writing this crap, we all dislike people who are just like us.
