The trick is to fan your guys out so their 25d6 fireball / 8 level drain / 20d8 chain lightning / triple strength deathfog breath only hits one of your frontliners at a time.
I’ve just completed my first blind playthrough of the series (Played as a Lawful Good Cavalier Paladin). This fight was the stuff of legends. My conflict with Firkraag lasted almost the entirety of SoA. I first met him around Level 9, and he kicked my ass. Every time my party leveled up, I would go back and try my luck again, getting closer and closer with every attempt. Around level 14, I left the Underdark in pursuit of Irenicus and Bodhi, and regained access to the world map. The final clash with the Shattered One was close, so I decided to dare the dragon one final time. I marched back through Windspear Mountain, Dragon Blade in hand, determined to end this vicious strife once and for all. “Ah, well. It is... as they say... your funeral. Time to die, manling! HAHAHAHA!” The battle was long, arduous, and absolutely glorious. I finally got to hear this epic soundtrack in it’s entirety. After a mighty struggle, I struck a critical hit against Firkraag, bringing down the red tyrant for good and for all. I was elated to discover that within Firkraag’s hoard was easily the best sword for my class: Carsomyr, the Holy Avenger. As you would expect, it never left my grasp for the rest of my playthrough. Overall, it was one of the greatest highlights of my Baldur’s Gate adventure. 10/10 would slay again.
you just described the reason why I think this is the best game ever created. You meet Firkaag when you start, game doesnt worry you going to uninstall like a baby.

By far one of the best moments of the game. Facing a massive beast that has 10 times your size, power, magical might, and intellect. You start cocky as usual, sending your arrows and magic missles his way as if he was a regular boss... only for your entire party to be thrown aside by a flame attack like leaves by a gust of wind, left with little to no HP and unconscious after a single second of the fight. Then a flurry of hostile spells flies your way, incapacitating most of your team instantly. Before Firkraag spits fire again, most of your team is either dead, or impossible to control. What an epic fight this was. I must've tried it more than a hundred times with my original team, bringing new group members, potions, spells, summons and builds every time to think of an optimal strategy. And even years later when I became a BG2 pro and completed the game with a solo character dozens of times without using mods or exploits i still perceived this to be one of the most challenging and my favorite fights in the game. This fight is the very definition of epic.
This is a truly underrated comment. This moment will always be one of my absolute favorites. No other enemy shows you just how inadequate your really are. Dragons in this game are truly legendary creatures! In every other game when someone boasts that they have slain a dragon, I'm forced to shake my head and reply, "No. That was no dragon."
@@deydraniadiancecht8298 I still need to do my evil playthrough where I side with Firkraag and this forms the soundtrack to the battle against Adalon, just so I can use her blood to finish my human skin leather armour. And then go back and kill him off anyhow because I fancy having Korgan wear his skin. And as for Nizidramaniiyt and Thax'llsilya and Draconis and Abazigal and Saladrex (the green dragon in Watcher's Keep), they're going down as well.
Games werent harder at all. You just had a shittier internet thats why it felt harder. Any single player rpg can be trivialized in minutes reading a guide.
Years later and this theme still exponentially embodies the moment. As soon as you hear it; you immediately get some amazing vibes and know you are about to clash with one of the most powerful creatures in all of Faerun. Never before or since has it ever felt so exciting to kill a dragon. :')

I mean most of us nowadays are veteran players who can cheese the system in two hundred ways and solo Demogorgon, but even if you knew your 3.5 D&D, there is a near certainty, that your party would get obliterated in seconds during a first playthrough. Firkraag is a dragon done right, it's literally the archetypical epic dragon encounter, almost straight from an adventure book. As for the other ones... Let's see- The Shadow Dragon has to be cheesed with his level draining breath, otherwise he's impossible to take down for a noob, the one next to Irenicus can get challenging if you don't have a good party and are often underleveled AND don't know what you're doing, same for the silver one. Nah, in vanilla if you chose to fight a dragon... Welp, may gods have mercy on your soul, dead one!
@@trazyntheinfinite9895 The time you meet him in the game for the first time if you progress like most players he's gonna wipe you. Over and over again. Every try you get better, every try you find the right spells for the right time, where you have to place your characters so his breath attack isn't wiping everyon at the first round, which characters you need to equip with which item. Firkraag is still the most powerfull and true dragon encounter in all PC games. He's played be the rules as a common encounter and not a silly event (like many modern games would do it), he's OP in comparison to the things you kill just before him in his dungeon (Goddamn Kamikaze Kobolds lol), he *is* using magic against you as well and his treasure is even worth doing it. He's an optional boss enemy for a reason. Firkraag wasn't yet topped by another encounter, the only thing that got close to it were the other dragons in BGII and perhaps the Adra Dragon in PoE1 came somewhat near it. But yes, if you're not *exceptionally* good at employing all tricks in the game he *is* gonna give you a *very* hard time.
This should be submitted to the London Symphony Orchestra next time they do their 'Best of Gaming' covers. This song became ingrained in my head back in the day before fancy cheats and such! I *EARNED* that win. Buffed the hell out of my party after summoning some meat shields and stripped Firkraag's resistance and fought long and hard. And I'd never walk away. I wasn't going to let Firkraag think he'd won even for an instant. He tried to ruin my life, so I came into his house and shit on his couch. Oh, and killed his ass dead and wore it after a trip to Cromwell...
Out of all the videogame dragons I've slain in these years of gaming, those dragons from Baldur's Gate are literally the most terrifying, don't get me wrong, there are other games that have powerful and intimidating dragons, but those Baldur's Gate dragons had so much vibe to it, you get it? it just felt so much different, next level, truly amazing.

The most beautiful thing about the Firkraag battle is that he feels *smart* in the fight. Self buffs, dispels, switches targets to the most convenient foes, he knocks you around and focuses on the isolated targets. It feels like a dragon should feel. You're outgunned on all counts, half of your party has no weapon capable of hitting him if you do his quest early, and the game doesn't really care about that. You walked into the dragon lair, and now you understand why that carsomyr ended up in his hoard.

"It is, as they say, your funeral." The most satisfying way I've punked this jerk is by nuking all his saves and then polymorphing him into a squirrel. Practical? Not really, but definitely fun.
Idk if you can do this on any other difficulty (game is too hard for me outside Story Mode, no I'm not a video game journalist), but one time as an experiment I casted Disintegrate on him, AND IT WORKED! DEAD! FIRST TRY! I just sat in my chair thinking, YOU CAN DO THAT!? Times like that I LOVE D&D, always full of surprises! BUT! THERE IS A TWIST! IT'S PREFERABLE YOU DON'T CAST THAT BECAUSE THEN YOU DON'T GET THE LOOT INCLUDING HIS SCALES AND CARSOMYR! Thank god for quick saves.
Firkraag isn't immune to instant death attacks, so provided you lower his resistances and saving throws (Lower Resistance, Doom, Greater Malison, etc.), he'll be quite susceptible to them. Finger of Death, the monk's Quivering Palm, Disintegrate, Flesh to Stone, even the 1st level Chromatic Orb can kill him outright.
Gotta love 2015. When this game came out I begged a friend who knew how to make mp3s and get music out of a game to make an mp3 out of this, because the official BG2 soundtrack disc didn't have this tune, and it was my favorite. now all you need is Google.
Firkraag should've been the main villain. Or at least he could've played a bigger part in the story. During the conversation, you realize he is well aware of what's going on, and he might know more about Irenicus than any other character. Waste of a great villain!
Firkragg could've certainly made for an interesting main antagonist. All the markings were there. He had a reason to kill you even though you had nothing to do with it. Considering that Firkragg does give your character the choice to live another day and go on to fight Irenicius since he was interested in how that battle would pan out. Although not in league with Irenicius; it nearly seems like once Irenicius is defeated Firkragg (if spared) might actually start to worry as he would see your characters power becoming an ever increasing threat to him if you came back to challenge him some day. I could definitely see him as the main antagonist in a follow up if your character chose to not kill him at the time.
Irenicus was a great villain, brilliantly written and perfectly voice acted by a great actor. Firkraag was good but no way could he had topped Irenicus.
@@exorder2005 Still, his past tied him with Gorion. He had a grudge to deal with and since Gorion wasn't available, he chose the next best thing: his pupil! He chose to take on the main character because of who he was. On the other hand, Irenicus only wanted to harness your power and had nothing personal against the main character. But of course that didn't make Irenicus a bad main vilain either. It kinda sucks that Firkraag and Kangaxx were only sub-bosses that had no ties to the main story though!
@@TheFlamingPike If you think about it, it's probably the most complex story ever written in an RPG. And even though it feels good to say, "this character was so awesome, too bad he wasn't part of the main story", I don't know, what exactly would his relation to Irenicus and his scheme would have been? Another reason why I like the game so much is that every "side quest" feels epic, so In a way I am glad he was completely separate from the main story.

Played my first archer through BG1 Export to BG2 Decide to pick "Dragon" as racial enemy Goof off doing various chapter 2 quests Decide to head to Whisperwind hills for mr firkaag! Get to the final battle with him Buffs out the ass, animal summons, death wards, you name it.. Talk to firkaag for fight! Fight starts!!! Firkaag casts Stoneskin Neera casts Breach casts Called Shot casts Heart Seeker ability called "Aim" Commence to start launching arrows of piercing HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT Firkaag dead My gob hits the floor..... "25 minutes of planning the fight and All i needed was haste and one breech spell and about a total of 25 seconds of game time to kill? NERF DRAGON RACIAL ABILITY!"
In my first playthrough as a Fighter/Mage, the first dragon I encountered was Thaxxilssiliya. My average level 10ish party had to bust their ass for that fight (about 15 attempts). But when I met Firkraag later, it was easier. In my second playthrough as a Cavalier (has bonuses against dragons) I met Firkraag first (to take Carsomyr of course) and it was so difficult I had to level up before meeting him again. After finally finishing him off, went to Thax. This is how the shadow dragon died. Thax casts Protection from Magical Weapons and Stoneskin Aerie casts breach drinks haste potion starts attacking with Carsomyr Thax casts some dangerous spells at who is resists with MR and immunities Average duration melee fight. Thax dead. Breach, Haste and Carsomyr is a broken AF combination.
All these years later, I'm only now realizing that the brass trill (I think it's a trumpet?) in this composition's refrain is meant to mimic the sound of a roaring dragon.
Ah yes! The joy of being thrown around all over the map, gathering your party and all summons to walk up to Firkraag just to be thrown away again while dieing like flies all while hearing this song. Such fun times.

"Carsomyr!" I picture a chain of PCs (Player Characters, for those that aren't in the know) handing one another the Carsomyr until it is finally passed to the party's paladin. Once he takes hold of it, a smile forms on his face. This is the expression of a man about to give evil a thorough ass-kicking with righteous steel.
Remember my first time fighting Fiikraag...Had a Paladin and all the " starting characters "+ Aerie. Since i never fought a dragon before i just went straight on. Everyone went unconcious and got knocked back, and when we woke up and started attacking, everyone were killed one by one from about 6 hits. I never played dungeons&dragons so i had no idea how pretty much anything worked or what the spells did, but that part was one of the hardest i ever had, until i faced the mind flayers and Irenicus at the end. I still don't know alot about the game mechanics, but i've beaten the game once and as difficult the game is, it's still one of the best i ever played.
This music lets you know you're in for a fight. As an aside, I thought it was fun to play this for the most deadly battles in Dragon Age. It seemed so appropriate. I feel like the game was influenced in many ways by Baldur's Gate, and they couldn't have picked a better source of inspiration. Pretty good remastering, by the way.
Many many years ago I had my party leader Ash from Evil Dead, chaotic neutral goofy warrior, with sounds and portrait. This fight starts, this music starts playing, I send him to charge alone like the fool braggart he is and he says the battlecries "you are going down!!" and "...whistle... let's go!!", that moment will be in my memory forever.
Going through the game by myself for the first time (watched a playthrough a few years ago). I first encountered the dragon in the ruined temple (don't remember its name) as one of the first places i visited outside athkatla- it absolutely kicked my ass- I could barely touch it (even with buffs & summons). A few levels amd some good items later i came for Firkraag. He also kicked my ass but i could at least hurt him so with the help of quick-load (and quite a few of them) i took him down. I then returned to the ruined temple, prepared and assaulted the dragon. Imagine my suprise when this time, I kicked its ass almost without issue (Keldorn came close to dying but with help of some potions, didn't)... If you're wandering, my party is a pries of lathander, Keldorn, Valygar, Jaheira, Jan & Neera.
"Eh....another Lich battle...no big deal - fought a couple already to get these weird gold bones. Okay! Got him using the same old strateg-? Huh? No victory fanfare? Oh! Oh no! Oh god!"
Just for fun, the developers decided to shove another demi-lich in Watcher's Keep on the 4th floor, in a tucked away room. No foreshadowing, no announcement, nothing. You just stumble in the room and BOOM - demi-lich is right there in your face.
I just muted the in-game music and put this on in a UA-cam tab until the dragon was almost dead. Then I'd swap back because I didn't wanna miss any of the non-combat music that'd play in cutscenes.

Let the mighty priest-warrior finish the job. And the loot was just useless to me -.-
초회차때, 마지막 보스던전에 다다랐을 때에는 엄청나게 긴장된 그런 구조였죠. 게다가 발더스 게이트가 아닌 플레인스케이프 토먼트를 포함한 모든 D&D를 합쳐도 저 지역인 "윈드 스피어힐" 만큼의 스토리만큼 기승전결 서사가 깔끔하게 끝난 소름끼치는 퀼리티를 자랑했습니다. 심지어, 마지막 퍼크라그에서는 "그래봤자 용이 얼마나 약하겠냐 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ" 하다가 6인 파티 전원이 전멸하는 최악의 결과를 도래했습니다. 그만큼, 퍼크라그의 배경음과 퍼크라그의 포스만큼은 그 어떠한 드래곤이 와도 그만한 포스가 없었어요. 언더 다크의 실버드래곤은 이미 에픽레벨 도달하기 직전이라서 쉬웠고 감시자의 성채(와쳐'스 킵)은 살라드렉스가 있었다고는 해도 그 시점에서는 이미 양자일행들이 이미 레벨30이나 되는 괴물스펙을 자랑하는 정도라서 크게 긴장감은 되지 않았으나 아무래도 성격이 느긋하고 양심있는 성격이다보니 성격적으로 한 몫을 했죠. 반면, 퍼크라그는 치밀하고 주도면밀한데다 아군끼리 싸우는 혼란을 가속화시키고 자신에게 도전하러 온 부하들을 시켜서 자신에게 도달하지 못하도록 소모시키도록 만들고 전부 소모되었다면 다른 악당들 찾아가서 일일이 자신의 던전을 수복하는 미친 짓거리가 가능했고 윈드 스피어힐의 영토를 엄청나게 날려버린 장본인이죠. 게다가 양자를 괴롭힌 이유가 고라이온이라는 대마법사 때문인데 계가 자신을 엄청나게 상처를 입히니까 화풀이로 저런 일을 저지름. 심지어, 기습공격도 아닌 전투 준비하라는 양상까지 말하라는 말까지 하나부터 열까지의 포스가 엄청난 드래곤이죠. 현재는 파훼법이 많아진 지금이야 뭐, 포스가 없어 보이긴 해도 초회차에서는 그게 아님. 섀도 드래곤은 그나마 약한데 얘는 문제가 있음. 광역스킬로 레벨드레인 때립니다. 저게 문제죠. 심지어, 마지막 최종보스가 섀도 드래곤보다 약하니까 더더욱. 바알의 유산에서는 아바지갈이 있으나 퍼크라그 이상의 강함을 지녔어도 그만한 포스가 없는데다 드래곤의 힘만 믿고 에픽모험가들에게 들이대다고 보기 좋게 털렸죠. 즉, 최종보스로는 이레니쿠스와 사레복이 있다면 중간보스는 퍼크라그만한 작자가 없다는 뜻이죠. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Damn, there was a talking red dragon, a - somewhat friendly, I think - silver dragon in the Underdark, a black one near the end (probably more), and endless other stuff inbetween and around (nothing feels like filler); this game is so adventurous. This is notably also the fight music against Lichs, which are close to end-boss difficulty but can be defeated with tactical approach in the middle.
There's also a shadow dragon in the temple of Amaunator, as well as a copper dragon that you can fight in the Nine Hells (only if you're evil, though). There are twin silver dragons you encounter if you do Dorn's bloody path companion quest (Enhanced Edition only). In Siege of Dragonspear, there's a green dragon near Boarskyr Bridge, as well as the ghost of a metallic (good) dragon who guards the entrance to the ruined city below Dragonspear Castle. There is also a young green dragon in the Forested Area that asks the Bhaalspawn for assistance. In TOB, there is a red dragon in Watcher's Keep, as well as a green dragon guarding the final seal. In Abazigal's Lair, there is Draconis, a brown dragon, guarding the entrance, and a green dragon bound by a geas cast upon her by Abazigal. She is forced to guard his inner sanctum. She can be freed by a scroll of reversal, at which point she'll give Abazigal's Wardstone to the Bhaalspawn. And of course there's Abazigal, your half-brother, himself. A very powerful blue dragon and fellow Child of Bhaal. Also, this track is used for the fight against Kangaxx, the demi-lich. Demi-liches are far, FAR worse than your standard run of the mill lich (which are also quite nasty in their own right).
It reminded me of battle vs demi-lich Kangaxx. Nothing to say. You probably know what is happening here - imprisonment with to saves or resistance. Spell trap and good blunt +4 or +5 weapon to go.
first time i beat firkgraag was by setting thief traps by the entrance -> going back downstairs and resting -> coming back up and setting traps -> repeat. i did it like 20 times and half the time you'd be woken up with a fight when trying to rest. eventually i pulled firkraag to the traps and they one-shot him another time i beat him using literally only the boomerang dagger for 1 damage a throw, and all my party standing way back from the arch way which he was too big to get through
His father is a lightweight, compared to Draconis. Still the strongest enemy I conquered on my main character. Minsc took ol' Firkraag. I still found Firkraag more challenging since I went at him at a very low level.
Alton4 Yeah Draconis was definitely the hardest dragon in the series. While it's true to say Draconis probably wouldn't be the strongest ; his tactics made him a very nasty piece of work. A dragon is hard enough to beat but a tactical dragon that catches your party members of guard? Yeah nasty stuff. His father was most likely stronger but he was just brawn with no real noteworthy tactics and thus much easier than Draconis since it was pretty much just beat him up till he dies. It's definitely one of those battles that proves strength alone doesn't make a foe challenging; it's what they do. It's sort of like Firkragg; he's more powerful than the Shadow Dragon but because the shadow dragon refuses to let you summon monsters,protects from magical weapons and level drains party members, he is considerably harder to take down. Firkraggs tactics are easier to work around in general :)

Medivhmen That may very well be true. I played through on normal and i had more difficulty with modded Abazigal but Draconis is definitely tough as hell. He may scale harder with increased difficulty levels too.
+Aedan McInnes Dragon Battles were also way more dynamic, and each one different from the last one you fought, you had to delve deep into the complex tactics of D&D to beat each one. Not even comparable to hitting right trigger/right mouse over and over until the dragon falls over. Skyrim shouldn't even be compared to Baldur's Gate.
I just started playing BG2 in the new Legacy of Bhaal mode, the Goblins in the tutorial dungeon almost killed me, I shutter to think of what it will take to defeat any of the Dragons. Draconis is going to be impossible.
Try downloading the difficulty increase pack for demogorgon/bhaalspawn. Then try soloing the game on insane mode. I beat it using a sorcerer with max lvl max gear. Time stop, chain contingency, breach, breach, pierce magic, etc etc lower res, time stop, summon avatar, comet, comet, horrid wilting, timestop, wilting wilting wilting, wilting, dead. Dragon gets no moves. Only enemies u have to watch out for are enemies with immunity to time stop. The monk bhaalspawn, final boss, draconis was admittedly a pain in the ass, his father in the diff upgrade patch has 2 other dragons to fight along side him. You fight 3 dragons at the same time in that version. And on insane mode dmg is doubled etc etc. Try to solo using maxed sorc with proper spell choices. Ring of Gaxx, ring of prot +3, staff of power, amulet of power etc etc. In the increased diff version Demogorgon regenerates at an INSANE speed so you have to crush his mag def and kill him VERY quickly. Its best to use that spell that eliminates breaks between spell casting, and then walk off screen when demo uses his buffs and starts casting timestop to summon demons. Use a couple of chain/regular contingency debuffs on him before u walk off screen. U will be able to avoid agro of the snake ladies. Then you AOE him to death. Not very difficult. Only has roughly 250 hp or something like that. Demo still pales in comparison to the final boss fight in the patch tho. You have to fight all the bhaalspawn at the same time as that bitch. There are a few cheap ways to make it very ez so I don't use it, you can, before initiating the fight with the final boss, set up a TON of skull traps, use wish to reset spells becuz u cant rest, so basically u have infinite spell usage as long as u don't die, can use simacrulum/mislead/project image to multiply these effects especially against dragons. Think like 30 horrid wiltings hitting a dragon all at the same time with the dragons natural resistances demolished and reduced into negative values. Not a single dragon in the game can survive it.

This is THE definitive dragon battle theme
I’ve just completed my first blind playthrough of the series (Played as a Lawful Good Cavalier Paladin). This fight was the stuff of legends. My conflict with Firkraag lasted almost the entirety of SoA. I first met him around Level 9, and he kicked my ass. Every time my party leveled up, I would go back and try my luck again, getting closer and closer with every attempt. Around level 14, I left the Underdark in pursuit of Irenicus and Bodhi, and regained access to the world map. The final clash with the Shattered One was close, so I decided to dare the dragon one final time. I marched back through Windspear Mountain, Dragon Blade in hand, determined to end this vicious strife once and for all.
“Ah, well. It is... as they say... your funeral. Time to die, manling! HAHAHAHA!”
The battle was long, arduous, and absolutely glorious. I finally got to hear this epic soundtrack in it’s entirety. After a mighty struggle, I struck a critical hit against Firkraag, bringing down the red tyrant for good and for all. I was elated to discover that within Firkraag’s hoard was easily the best sword for my class: Carsomyr, the Holy Avenger. As you would expect, it never left my grasp for the rest of my playthrough. Overall, it was one of the greatest highlights of my Baldur’s Gate adventure. 10/10 would slay again.

By far one of the best moments of the game. Facing a massive beast that has 10 times your size, power, magical might, and intellect. You start cocky as usual, sending your arrows and magic missles his way as if he was a regular boss... only for your entire party to be thrown aside by a flame attack like leaves by a gust of wind, left with little to no HP and unconscious after a single second of the fight. Then a flurry of hostile spells flies your way, incapacitating most of your team instantly. Before Firkraag spits fire again, most of your team is either dead, or impossible to control. What an epic fight this was. I must've tried it more than a hundred times with my original team, bringing new group members, potions, spells, summons and builds every time to think of an optimal strategy. And even years later when I became a BG2 pro and completed the game with a solo character dozens of times without using mods or exploits i still perceived this to be one of the most challenging and my favorite fights in the game. This fight is the very definition of epic.
This is a truly underrated comment. This moment will always be one of my absolute favorites. No other enemy shows you just how inadequate your really are. Dragons in this game are truly legendary creatures! In every other game when someone boasts that they have slain a dragon, I'm forced to shake my head and reply, "No. That was no dragon."

And then go back and kill him off anyhow because I fancy having Korgan wear his skin. And as for Nizidramaniiyt and Thax'llsilya and Draconis and Abazigal and Saladrex (the green dragon in Watcher's Keep), they're going down as well.
...and then you learn about the Greater Malison + Doom + Breach + Chromatic Orb combo and one-shot him.

Years later and this theme still exponentially embodies the moment. As soon as you hear it; you immediately get some amazing vibes and know you are about to clash with one of the most powerful creatures in all of Faerun. Never before or since has it ever felt so exciting to kill a dragon. :')

I mean most of us nowadays are veteran players who can cheese the system in two hundred ways and solo Demogorgon, but even if you knew your 3.5 D&D, there is a near certainty, that your party would get obliterated in seconds during a first playthrough. Firkraag is a dragon done right, it's literally the archetypical epic dragon encounter, almost straight from an adventure book. As for the other ones... Let's see- The Shadow Dragon has to be cheesed with his level draining breath, otherwise he's impossible to take down for a noob, the one next to Irenicus can get challenging if you don't have a good party and are often underleveled AND don't know what you're doing, same for the silver one. Nah, in vanilla if you chose to fight a dragon... Welp, may gods have mercy on your soul, dead one!
@@trazyntheinfinite9895 The time you meet him in the game for the first time if you progress like most players he's gonna wipe you. Over and over again. Every try you get better, every try you find the right spells for the right time, where you have to place your characters so his breath attack isn't wiping everyon at the first round, which characters you need to equip with which item. Firkraag is still the most powerfull and true dragon encounter in all PC games. He's played be the rules as a common encounter and not a silly event (like many modern games would do it), he's OP in comparison to the things you kill just before him in his dungeon (Goddamn Kamikaze Kobolds lol), he *is* using magic against you as well and his treasure is even worth doing it. He's an optional boss enemy for a reason. Firkraag wasn't yet topped by another encounter, the only thing that got close to it were the other dragons in BGII and perhaps the Adra Dragon in PoE1 came somewhat near it.
But yes, if you're not *exceptionally* good at employing all tricks in the game he *is* gonna give you a *very* hard time.
This should be submitted to the London Symphony Orchestra next time they do their 'Best of Gaming' covers.

Out of all the videogame dragons I've slain in these years of gaming, those dragons from Baldur's Gate are literally the most terrifying, don't get me wrong, there are other games that have powerful and intimidating dragons, but those Baldur's Gate dragons had so much vibe to it, you get it? it just felt so much different, next level, truly amazing.

The most beautiful thing about the Firkraag battle is that he feels *smart* in the fight.
Self buffs, dispels, switches targets to the most convenient foes, he knocks you around and focuses on the isolated targets.
It feels like a dragon should feel. You're outgunned on all counts, half of your party has no weapon capable of hitting him if you do his quest early, and the game doesn't really care about that.
You walked into the dragon lair, and now you understand why that carsomyr ended up in his hoard.
Pierce shield, Lower resistance. Secret word, breach. Magic missile, magic missile, magic missile, magic missile, magic missile...

Idk if you can do this on any other difficulty (game is too hard for me outside Story Mode, no I'm not a video game journalist), but one time as an experiment I casted Disintegrate on him, AND IT WORKED! DEAD! FIRST TRY! I just sat in my chair thinking, YOU CAN DO THAT!?
Times like that I LOVE D&D, always full of surprises!
BUT! THERE IS A TWIST! IT'S PREFERABLE YOU DON'T CAST THAT BECAUSE THEN YOU DON'T GET THE LOOT INCLUDING HIS SCALES AND CARSOMYR! Thank god for quick saves.
Firkraag isn't immune to instant death attacks, so provided you lower his resistances and saving throws (Lower Resistance, Doom, Greater Malison, etc.), he'll be quite susceptible to them. Finger of Death, the monk's Quivering Palm, Disintegrate, Flesh to Stone, even the 1st level Chromatic Orb can kill him outright.
I played BG series once, and I finished it barely week ago. But this soundtrack already sounds nostalgic for me.

Firkraag should've been the main villain. Or at least he could've played a bigger part in the story. During the conversation, you realize he is well aware of what's going on, and he might know more about Irenicus than any other character. Waste of a great villain!
Firkragg could've certainly made for an interesting main antagonist. All the markings were there. He had a reason to kill you even though you had nothing to do with it. Considering that Firkragg does give your character the choice to live another day and go on to fight Irenicius since he was interested in how that battle would pan out. Although not in league with Irenicius; it nearly seems like once Irenicius is defeated Firkragg (if spared) might actually start to worry as he would see your characters power becoming an ever increasing threat to him if you came back to challenge him some day. I could definitely see him as the main antagonist in a follow up if your character chose to not kill him at the time.
Irenicus was a great villain, brilliantly written and perfectly voice acted by a great actor. Firkraag was good but no way could he had topped Irenicus.
@@exorder2005 Still, his past tied him with Gorion. He had a grudge to deal with and since Gorion wasn't available, he chose the next best thing: his pupil! He chose to take on the main character because of who he was. On the other hand, Irenicus only wanted to harness your power and had nothing personal against the main character. But of course that didn't make Irenicus a bad main vilain either. It kinda sucks that Firkraag and Kangaxx were only sub-bosses that had no ties to the main story though!

And even though it feels good to say, "this character was so awesome, too bad he wasn't part of the main story", I don't know, what exactly would his relation to Irenicus and his scheme would have been?
Another reason why I like the game so much is that every "side quest" feels epic, so In a way I am glad he was completely separate from the main story.

In my first playthrough as a Fighter/Mage, the first dragon I encountered was Thaxxilssiliya. My average level 10ish party had to bust their ass for that fight (about 15 attempts). But when I met Firkraag later, it was easier.
In my second playthrough as a Cavalier (has bonuses against dragons) I met Firkraag first (to take Carsomyr of course) and it was so difficult I had to level up before meeting him again. After finally finishing him off, went to Thax. This is how the shadow dragon died.

I picture a chain of PCs (Player Characters, for those that aren't in the know) handing one another the Carsomyr until it is finally passed to the party's paladin. Once he takes hold of it, a smile forms on his face. This is the expression of a man about to give evil a thorough ass-kicking with righteous steel.

BG2 was such an incredible leap forward in terms of graphics, storytelling and music when compared to BG1.
Its the official hymn of desperate running around in panic.
Remember my first time fighting Fiikraag...Had a Paladin and all the " starting characters "+ Aerie. Since i never fought a dragon before i just went straight on. Everyone went unconcious and got knocked back, and when we woke up and started attacking, everyone were killed one by one from about 6 hits.
I never played dungeons&dragons so i had no idea how pretty much anything worked or what the spells did, but that part was one of the hardest i ever had, until i faced the mind flayers and Irenicus at the end.
I still don't know alot about the game mechanics, but i've beaten the game once and as difficult the game is, it's still one of the best i ever played.
Music the scale of BG1+2 missing is the only thing I feel BG3 is not living up to so far.
This music lets you know you're in for a fight. As an aside, I thought it was fun to play this for the most deadly battles in Dragon Age. It seemed so appropriate. I feel like the game was influenced in many ways by Baldur's Gate, and they couldn't have picked a better source of inspiration. Pretty good remastering, by the way.
Many many years ago I had my party leader Ash from Evil Dead, chaotic neutral goofy warrior, with sounds and portrait. This fight starts, this music starts playing, I send him to charge alone like the fool braggart he is and he says the battlecries "you are going down!!" and "...whistle... let's go!!", that moment will be in my memory forever.
Going through the game by myself for the first time (watched a playthrough a few years ago). I first encountered the dragon in the ruined temple (don't remember its name) as one of the first places i visited outside athkatla- it absolutely kicked my ass- I could barely touch it (even with buffs & summons). A few levels amd some good items later i came for Firkraag. He also kicked my ass but i could at least hurt him so with the help of quick-load (and quite a few of them) i took him down. I then returned to the ruined temple, prepared and assaulted the dragon. Imagine my suprise when this time, I kicked its ass almost without issue (Keldorn came close to dying but with help of some potions, didn't)...
If you're wandering, my party is a pries of lathander, Keldorn, Valygar, Jaheira, Jan & Neera.

Just for fun, the developers decided to shove another demi-lich in Watcher's Keep on the 4th floor, in a tucked away room. No foreshadowing, no announcement, nothing. You just stumble in the room and BOOM - demi-lich is right there in your face.

I just muted the in-game music and put this on in a UA-cam tab until the dragon was almost dead. Then I'd swap back because I didn't wanna miss any of the non-combat music that'd play in cutscenes.

초회차때, 마지막 보스던전에 다다랐을 때에는 엄청나게 긴장된 그런 구조였죠. 게다가 발더스 게이트가 아닌 플레인스케이프 토먼트를 포함한 모든 D&D를 합쳐도 저 지역인 "윈드 스피어힐" 만큼의 스토리만큼 기승전결 서사가 깔끔하게 끝난 소름끼치는 퀼리티를 자랑했습니다. 심지어, 마지막 퍼크라그에서는 "그래봤자 용이 얼마나 약하겠냐 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ" 하다가 6인 파티 전원이 전멸하는 최악의 결과를 도래했습니다. 그만큼, 퍼크라그의 배경음과 퍼크라그의 포스만큼은 그 어떠한 드래곤이 와도 그만한 포스가 없었어요. 언더 다크의 실버드래곤은 이미 에픽레벨 도달하기 직전이라서 쉬웠고 감시자의 성채(와쳐'스 킵)은 살라드렉스가 있었다고는 해도 그 시점에서는 이미 양자일행들이 이미 레벨30이나 되는 괴물스펙을 자랑하는 정도라서 크게 긴장감은 되지 않았으나 아무래도 성격이 느긋하고 양심있는 성격이다보니 성격적으로 한 몫을 했죠. 반면, 퍼크라그는 치밀하고 주도면밀한데다 아군끼리 싸우는 혼란을 가속화시키고 자신에게 도전하러 온 부하들을 시켜서 자신에게 도달하지 못하도록 소모시키도록 만들고 전부 소모되었다면 다른 악당들 찾아가서 일일이 자신의 던전을 수복하는 미친 짓거리가 가능했고 윈드 스피어힐의 영토를 엄청나게 날려버린 장본인이죠. 게다가 양자를 괴롭힌 이유가 고라이온이라는 대마법사 때문인데 계가 자신을 엄청나게 상처를 입히니까 화풀이로 저런 일을 저지름. 심지어, 기습공격도 아닌 전투 준비하라는 양상까지 말하라는 말까지 하나부터 열까지의 포스가 엄청난 드래곤이죠. 현재는 파훼법이 많아진 지금이야 뭐, 포스가 없어 보이긴 해도 초회차에서는 그게 아님.
섀도 드래곤은 그나마 약한데 얘는 문제가 있음. 광역스킬로 레벨드레인 때립니다. 저게 문제죠. 심지어, 마지막 최종보스가 섀도 드래곤보다 약하니까 더더욱.

Damn, there was a talking red dragon, a - somewhat friendly, I think - silver dragon in the Underdark, a black one near the end (probably more), and endless other stuff inbetween and around (nothing feels like filler); this game is so adventurous. This is notably also the fight music against Lichs, which are close to end-boss difficulty but can be defeated with tactical approach in the middle.
There's also a shadow dragon in the temple of Amaunator, as well as a copper dragon that you can fight in the Nine Hells (only if you're evil, though). There are twin silver dragons you encounter if you do Dorn's bloody path companion quest (Enhanced Edition only).
In Siege of Dragonspear, there's a green dragon near Boarskyr Bridge, as well as the ghost of a metallic (good) dragon who guards the entrance to the ruined city below Dragonspear Castle. There is also a young green dragon in the Forested Area that asks the Bhaalspawn for assistance.
In TOB, there is a red dragon in Watcher's Keep, as well as a green dragon guarding the final seal. In Abazigal's Lair, there is Draconis, a brown dragon, guarding the entrance, and a green dragon bound by a geas cast upon her by Abazigal. She is forced to guard his inner sanctum. She can be freed by a scroll of reversal, at which point she'll give Abazigal's Wardstone to the Bhaalspawn.
And of course there's Abazigal, your half-brother, himself. A very powerful blue dragon and fellow Child of Bhaal.
Also, this track is used for the fight against Kangaxx, the demi-lich. Demi-liches are far, FAR worse than your standard run of the mill lich (which are also quite nasty in their own right).
@@mr.battle20 You should try that insane difficulty mod, Throne of Bhaal has a fucking 3 or 4 dragon at once fight. I got stuck there. It was brutal.

Hardest difficult and then he was a real challenge. Immune to magic, imminue to death, immune against all magic.
Alas, the dragon failed its save upon Minsc’s second strike with the vorpal blade.
It reminded me of battle vs demi-lich Kangaxx. Nothing to say. You probably know what is happening here - imprisonment with to saves or resistance. Spell trap and good blunt +4 or +5 weapon to go.

first time i beat firkgraag was by setting thief traps by the entrance -> going back downstairs and resting -> coming back up and setting traps -> repeat.
i did it like 20 times and half the time you'd be woken up with a fight when trying to rest. eventually i pulled firkraag to the traps and they one-shot him
another time i beat him using literally only the boomerang dagger for 1 damage a throw, and all my party standing way back from the arch way which he was too big to get through

draconis is by the far the hardest dragon battle.Even his father,abazigal , isnt that hard compare to him
His father is a lightweight, compared to Draconis. Still the strongest enemy I conquered on my main character. Minsc took ol' Firkraag. I still found Firkraag more challenging since I went at him at a very low level.
Alton4 Yeah Draconis was definitely the hardest dragon in the series. While it's true to say Draconis probably wouldn't be the strongest ; his tactics made him a very nasty piece of work. A dragon is hard enough to beat but a tactical dragon that catches your party members of guard? Yeah nasty stuff. His father was most likely stronger but he was just brawn with no real noteworthy tactics and thus much easier than Draconis since it was pretty much just beat him up till he dies. It's definitely one of those battles that proves strength alone doesn't make a foe challenging; it's what they do. It's sort of like Firkragg; he's more powerful than the Shadow Dragon but because the shadow dragon refuses to let you summon monsters,protects from magical weapons and level drains party members, he is considerably harder to take down. Firkraggs tactics are easier to work around in general :)

Medivhmen That may very well be true. I played through on normal and i had more difficulty with modded Abazigal but Draconis is definitely tough as hell. He may scale harder with increased difficulty levels too.

Yep. Quivering Palm is an instant-death attack, to which Firkraag isn't immune.
These dragons....I get always the biggest gap from them with laying traps around them. There is no saving throw from each of them

+Aedan McInnes Dragon Battles were also way more dynamic, and each one different from the last one you fought, you had to delve deep into the complex tactics of D&D to beat each one. Not even comparable to hitting right trigger/right mouse over and over until the dragon falls over. Skyrim shouldn't even be compared to Baldur's Gate.

I just started playing BG2 in the new Legacy of Bhaal mode, the Goblins in the tutorial dungeon almost killed me, I shutter to think of what it will take to defeat any of the Dragons. Draconis is going to be impossible.
Try downloading the difficulty increase pack for demogorgon/bhaalspawn. Then try soloing the game on insane mode. I beat it using a sorcerer with max lvl max gear. Time stop, chain contingency, breach, breach, pierce magic, etc etc lower res, time stop, summon avatar, comet, comet, horrid wilting, timestop, wilting wilting wilting, wilting, dead. Dragon gets no moves. Only enemies u have to watch out for are enemies with immunity to time stop. The monk bhaalspawn, final boss, draconis was admittedly a pain in the ass, his father in the diff upgrade patch has 2 other dragons to fight along side him. You fight 3 dragons at the same time in that version. And on insane mode dmg is doubled etc etc. Try to solo using maxed sorc with proper spell choices. Ring of Gaxx, ring of prot +3, staff of power, amulet of power etc etc. In the increased diff version Demogorgon regenerates at an INSANE speed so you have to crush his mag def and kill him VERY quickly. Its best to use that spell that eliminates breaks between spell casting, and then walk off screen when demo uses his buffs and starts casting timestop to summon demons. Use a couple of chain/regular contingency debuffs on him before u walk off screen. U will be able to avoid agro of the snake ladies. Then you AOE him to death. Not very difficult. Only has roughly 250 hp or something like that. Demo still pales in comparison to the final boss fight in the patch tho. You have to fight all the bhaalspawn at the same time as that bitch. There are a few cheap ways to make it very ez so I don't use it, you can, before initiating the fight with the final boss, set up a TON of skull traps, use wish to reset spells becuz u cant rest, so basically u have infinite spell usage as long as u don't die, can use simacrulum/mislead/project image to multiply these effects especially against dragons. Think like 30 horrid wiltings hitting a dragon all at the same time with the dragons natural resistances demolished and reduced into negative values. Not a single dragon in the game can survive it.
