How to put Rear Brembos on your GD WRX (2002 - 2007) or Forester XT (2004 - 2008)

  • If you have a WRX and you want to up-grade your brakes, the fronts are easy to do, that there are many options. One of the popular ones is to get the Brembo calipers off of an STI, which are a very nice up-grade for the WRX.
    But if you are up-grading the front calipers, and putting on a much larger rotor than stock, you will also want to look at your rear brake system as well. This is especially true if you are tracking the car and using aggressive brake pad compounds, etc.
    There are much fewer options for rear Brake Kits for the WRX, and in large part this is because of the added complexity of the parking brake in the rear.
    But through the years, various companies, including Brembo themselves, have made rear conversion kits to put the same Brembo calipers as the STI onto the back of the WRX. This is done with adapter brackets, and special conversion rotors.
    If you are piecing a kit together yourself though, there is still a lot of confusion involved in getting the correct parts to get everything to work properly, so we wanted to go through the process for you in the hopes of making that more clear.
    In addition to that, KNS Brakes has come out with another solution for the rear parking brakes when doing this conversion that may be appealing to you as well. So we wanted to feature that new solution too.
    Thanks for watching!

    Awesome, was going to ask if a timesert would work to repair a caliper. I have no intention of this conversion, but I love to learn more. I drive a 96 Subaru legacy. Aluminum is ideal for longevity of a caliper in the Rust belt, so I did think about this kind of conversion. I do wonder if it would work.

  • @asdreww
    @asdreww 4 роки тому +1

    Hi Flatirons, you mentioned the handbrake size is related to the r160/r180 diff - is this actually the case or is it possible to swap the hub/handbrake mechanism only from an STI to a WRX? The reason I ask is that the JDM Forester STI uses an R160 rear diff, but the rear brake discs are identical to the same model year 2004 STi so it's clearly a 'combo' of what we'd think of R160/R180.

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  4 роки тому

      Thanks for your question. The sizing of the parking brake shoes is built into the backing plates. If the Forester STI does have the fittings for the larger STI shoes, then yes, that should work for a conversion.
      However, as the KNS adapter shoes work for this as well, I would guess that those are more readily available.
      Hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!

    If I want to put rear 2pot calipers on a 06 FXT.
    Can I just get a pair of backing plates instead of the caliper adapters?
    (26704FE000 & 26704FE010 for the 316 rotors and brembo 2pot from 04 STI?)
    (26704FE080 & 26704FE090 for the 290 rotors and red 2pot from 07 WRX?)
    And the special thicker e-brake shoes if I want the 316 rotors with brembo.

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  2 роки тому

    I have run into a little snag in the rear. My DBA conversion rotor sits right up against the rotor dust cover. Do I need to swap that out?(if possible) or just remove it all together?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  5 років тому

      Thanks for your question. Yes, because you are putting on a larger rotor, and the dust cover normally hangs over the stock rotors, you will need to trim it, or remove it to be able to run those larger rotors.
      The easiest way to do this is to drill out the spot-welds that attach the outer portion of the dust shield. That is what we have done on the ones we have installed.
      Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

    • @FlatironsTuning

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  6 років тому

      Thanks for your question Kano. The emergency brake cable doesn't connect to the Brembo caliper. There are parking brake shoes that work inside the rear rotor, and they connect to them.

      Thanks for your question. Up front, the Subaru 4-pots use the same rotor as your 02, so no need to change.
      In the rear, you would need the 06-07 WRX rear rotor if you put on the Subaru 2-pots.
      And remember to check wheel clearance. Your stock wheels will need a 3-5mm spacer to clear the 4-pots up front.

    Are the dust boot necessary? My dust boot tore due to track use, do I have to rebuild them?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  6 років тому

      Hello Johnny. If you mean the dust shields, you will have to trim them, somewhat significantly, to get the larger rotors to fit. We haven't had any issues running without them, but it would be worth keeping an eye on your ball-joints, tie-rods, and other suspension bushings, etc., that would be close to the heat.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @johnnyh788

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  6 років тому

      Hello Johnny. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Those boot seals are rather important. They keep dust and debris from betting behind your brake pistons. A worst case scenereo would be that your caliper pistons could get scored which could cause them to stick/seize in the caliper and cause a failure.
      I would definitely look into a rebuild kit if you could.
      Hope that helps!
