I had a buddy who had an 85 300ZX turbo...a two-seater, but that didn't stop three (I rode under the hatch glass) of us from blasting the backroads of Oklahoma with Siouxie and the Banshees blaring out the open windows. I think that experience definitely shaped my reaction to Z cars as I always dig seeing any generation of the 20th century Zs, but only the 300ZX makes me smile.
You and me both on the parts support. It's nice to see some new parts production start to pop up, I think maybe we're on an upward swing of interest/new restoration effort in these cars.

Remember cruising in friends 300ZX T-Top, sitting on top the roof, cruise adjusted to 40km/h through villages main street, stereos blasting and thinking that we're cool. Sublime quality videos, love for Z cars really comes through! On par with Big Car etc

The Z31 making an appearing in the anime "Megazone 23" was an unforgetable moment for me, and made me desire after this car. The Z31 along with the Z32 are my favorite generation of the Z car.
It's funny how a quick scene in something can stick with us for so long. I remember walking to school one day and spotting a Z31 and not knowing what it was so I went over and looked at the name. Never saw that car again after that day, but the Z31 stuck with me. (Obviously lol)
I had a 1984 300ZX Turbo 5-speed manual…with that small hood scoop…it was quite exotic for its time, and above all, extremely reliable. I did eventually trade it in for a 1992 Dodge Stealth RT Twin-turbo, because I needed all-wheel drive so I could drive it year-round….the 300ZX with rear drive was undriveable in winter….but I did miss the nimble lightness of the Z compared to the 3800 lb mass of the Stealth.
The Dodge Stealth was such a fantastic car though, I can see why you went for it. One of my favorites of all time. I really wish the 3000GT's had had the Stealth's spoiler, I thought those were so cool. I'd love to do an episode on the Stealth/3000GT, maybe once the Z-Car series has wrapped up!
I owned an anniversary 300zx GLL Turbo. All the bells and whistles with the adjustable shocks, digital dash, and 5 speed manual. LOVED that car. It spun a crank shaft bearing and needed a new engine…but weeks after getting it back on the road, my ex wife destroyed it rear ending someone on the highway. I still deeply miss this car and how it made me feel driving it. I have an active search in AutoTrader for one!
I love having alerts setup for dream cars, if only to just check out new listings for them when they pop up. I'm not sure it qualifies as a hobby, but I sure spend a lot of time doing it, haha. Love to hear these stories of old cars, but sorry to hear what happened to it!
Hidden gem of a channel. These videos are VERY well produced, and I'm looking forward for the series on the Toyota Supra - because come on, we both know you're doing one.
I remembered this model being the only one with pop up up and down headlights, so I was not disappointed to hear the James Pumphrey clip. Great review!

300zx and 300zr (vg30de powered) Z31's didn't sell well in Japan due to displacement taxes. The 200zx (vg20et v6) and 200zr (RB20DET inline 6) sold a lot better. We didn't get those options in North America, but that's why there's so much extra space in front of the engine. Most overseas Z31's had inline-6 engines or lower displacement v6's.
Exactly right, I wanted to mention that in the video but had some audio issues with that part and ended up cutting it out. But you summarized it perfectly. There are at least a few of the Japanese 2L Z31s making their way to American shores these days, which is so cool to see.
I am always grateful to have owned an 83' ZX...To me the last true classic with the styling and inline 6. While not as big of a fan of the Z31, it will still make my head turn if I see one today. The 80's really brought some cool cars but the additional complexity and weight on most didn't impress as much. Still, a solid bridge to one of the best Z's, which I'm sure is next.
It is indeed next. :) And I love the S130s as well, such great cars. Part of me really wants to get an '83. Maybe one day if I get some room in the garage, haha.

It's on my short list. It may be at the top of that list right now... I LOVE Preludes. I may or may not drag my feet a little to give Honda the chance to get the 6th gen out and get some reviews, I am super optimistic about it and want to give it a fair shake.
I have a 1987 Red 300zx 2+2 I get more compliments when I'm driving than the corvette C-5 I had a fun car to drive. It was a Affordable car people would say I had a 300zx back in the day
It's amazing how folks will tell me "I've never seen one of those before" when driving the 300ZX around. And I'm a little doubtful, considering how common they were back in the day. But I think maybe they were just a little too common, and now that they've become more rare, folks are able to appreciate them a lot better.
I owned a white 1989 Z31 with tan interior, T-tops and a 5-speed manual...I purchased it in May of 2012 as the 3rd owner...the T-tops leaked, it was prone to overheat if the ambient temperature was above 90 degrees...especially in highway driving...but man, I loved that car...unfortunately in 2015 I had a chance on a 350Z at a good price and didn't have the garage space for 3 Nissans (I also own a track-prepped, gutted/roll caged 1996 240SX)...so I let the Z31 go...😕
Don't blame you for letting it go for a great 350Z, I love those cars. That tan interior though, that's probably my favorite interior on the Z31. Really wish mine had it!

Some of the "Chuki" 1986 300zx cars came with the 4-spoke steering wheel as well. I had an '86 GLL that had it.
