280ZX: The Smash Success… That Vanished | History of the Nissan Z-Car | Ep 4
The 280ZX represents a transitionary period for the Z-Car: The transition from 1960s engineering to 1980s engineering. The transition from pure sports to sporty luxury. The transition from natural aspiration to forced induction. The transition from being Mr. K.’s pet project to being developed without his guidance.
The transition from the Z to the ZX.
In today’s episode we’ll dive into the development of the 280ZX, it’s notable features, and it’s legacy.

Don't Overlook the Datsun 260Z & 280Z | History of the Nissan Z-Car | Ep 3
Переглядів 8 тис.Місяць тому
The Nissan S30 was more than just the 240Z. Often overshadowed by its older sibling, the Datsun 260Z and 280Z were the direct continuation of the S30 into the mid and late 1970s. They have styling, power, and a dedicated following. So why is it they're so often overlooked? In today’s episode we’ll dive into the history, development, features, and legacy of the 260Z and 280Z and find out what ma...
Is the Datsun 240Z the Most Iconic Z? | History of the Nissan Z-Car | Ep 2
Переглядів 4,1 тис.Місяць тому
There are just a handful of vehicles whose importance spans multiple generations. The kind of car that automotive enthusiasts of any age can get together and agree is beautiful. Is timeless. Is an icon. The Datsun 240Z is one of those cars. I’m your host, Rick Pierce, and this is the second episode in our series on the history of the Nissan Z-Car. In the last episode, we discussed the origins o...
The Forgotten Origins of the Fairlady Z | History of the Nissan Z-Car | Ep 1
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 місяці тому
The Nissan Fairlady Z is one of automotive’s greatest legends. For the last 50 years, each generation of the Z has turned heads on American streets wherever it went. And with good reason: the classic sweeping lines remain timeless. They exude the very concept of the term “Sports Car.” The Fairlady Z - better known in North America by its numerical displacement designation - is a staple of the A...

Nissan started their business by the theft of other people's designs.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series. I’m actively searching for a Z car.
How do you have only 1.34K Subs??????????!!! Your video production is Awesome! I love everyone of your videos. I grew up Z and 510 and the Lil' Hustler. I am telling all my motorheads about you. You should be at 500K subs at least!
I really enjoyed this. Thank you. 🐯
I had a 73 240Z and an 81 280ZX I would LOVE to have them both right now. Amazing car's.
A black and gold ZX was outside my Dentist's office 2 weeks ago. It's still a magnificent machine and I am a Vette driver.
When I was a highschooler, the neighbor had a silver 280ZX. I decided I was going to one day own a Z car. I now own a 1990 TT that I bought in 1995.
Bravo! I am life long fan of the S130. I owned quite a few over the years and have even started my own channel based on my S130 and other JDM cars. This was a very good homage to the 280zx.
I never liked the 280ZX... saw them around a lot as a kid in the early 80s and hated them... & at almost 50, I still don't like them... they seem like a kind of bastardization of the original 240/260/280 which I do like-a lot actually... but, it was still very cool to learn about this '2nd generation' and evolution of the Z... even with the addition the 400Z, it's never been more cool than the original Fairlady
and still have 260z
Ive owned 3 datsuns 240z 260z and 280 z best cars ever made .
Basically the deal is there was nothing in common with the original 240Z which oozed “1st principles” with the later 70s S30s 260Z etc. As soon as you added somethings a “fix” whether legal or comfort, you are a fail. It needed a complete ground up design. I had a ’82 S130 2+2 Turbo with T Tops all options Blabbermouth Betty etc and it was 10x away from the 240Z - the ONLY fun driving part was the turbo boost from say 50 - 90 on a highway otherwise it was a fancy gack loaded girl magnet for cocaine after all it was the 80s here in LA, a toy that was a boulevard cruiser at best. Way too expensive for what you got, but it was a “free” gift, common in the biz in those days so I cared not anyway, lol hence the unbiased opinion, don’t get me started on my beloved HemiCudas back in ’71 either…lol 👀
I had an '84 Rx-7 GSL SE. I loved the 280ZX! Made lots of money off those kids.
🐯🐅
nobody said shit about wanting it to be good for the environment back then

Great to see @5:33 a Holden HQ GTS Monaro coupe
I bought a well used 1978 280z in 1988. I’ve owned a lot of fun cars and this one was at the top of the list. It had no smog equipment but had the “new” to me anyway fuel injection. I was a young guy and drove that car like a rented mule. It cost me $500. It was blue with a paint matched front spoiler and black louvres on the back window. You could not blow the motor up and I tried. The car was light and the torque was amazing. That little car would fly! It already had some rust in the rockers, they weren’t built for a long life. The metal was thin. But what a car!
I'm Nissan in 1975? I take a victory lap, turn off the lights, and lock the door behind me for the last time. I go out as a champion. What I don't do is hang around to become the broken Muhammad Ali of car companies, getting worse with every round of product releases
Heh! The ME Generation! Makes perfect sense! Always love it when someone remembers what the boomers were CALLED BY THEIR PARENTS!
Rod Stewart? Wait, let me gouge out my ears now!!
Inline 6, best power plant
Childhood memory unlocked. Used to walk past a 280zx in my neighborhood all the time as a kid on the way to the park. Even at 12, I just loved the lines of that car.
5:34 Aussie made HQ GM-Holden Monaro GTS ❤❤ WOW
The 240/260/280 Zs were really special. I'd place them at probably in the top 5 most beautiful cars ever produced in history and they're the only Japanese vehicles I really admire the design. It is obvious to me they were going to be a knock off of the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. But someone took that and smoothed out all the ugly blunt lines (like how the rear just cuts off, etc) and made something really beautiful. It's German level design.
The most MIND BLOWING UA-cam video intro I’ve ever seen ❤born in the middle 70’s growing up in the 80’s that’s what I call “ NOSTALGIA “ 🔥🔥🔥🙌🏼🙌🏼🇦🇺
junk when new . no one wanted them never see them around now ..
The power steering on the s130 was a recirculating ball type, at least on the series 1 cars.
Datsun was around before Nissan, Nissan did not "invent" the brand name. Datsun was acquired by Nissan in 1934. I honestly think Nissan should've kept selling Datsuns as the entry level brand and positioned Nissan as the luxury brand (instead of Infiniti). Perhaps with the soiled reputation Nissan has now, it may be a good idea to bring thr Datsun name back in the USA (provided Nissan goes back to making the high quality, fun, and inexpensive cars they are renowned for).
I remember when the voice warning came out. "A Door is a jar".
I bought a new 1980 280ZX and when I wore it out at close to 200K, I found a clean low mileage 1982 280ZX and drove it till it got close to 200K. Not perfect but well balance daily drivers!
🐯
I own a 1980 280zx, it always has lived in Arizona. The plastic interior has not survived. Would love to find good dash board. I have a dash cap.
Have learned a lot about Z cars, but thought the length might be an indication of more details. Did not disappoint! Very good! Started vid with images of Black Gold edition. I love that car! Saw a handful in the 80's and it was pure sexy.
Now a days a Datson is what you get when Jonnie Quest's friend Hadji identifies himself with pronouns😂
I was in high school when the Z became the ZX. I LOVED Z cars, and tried to like the ZX. It was ok, but it was a lot like that band you liked who put out an album later in their career that just didn't measure up. Sure, you played it - and it probably had a couple of good songs. But at the same time you were kind of forcing yourself to like it.
My first car was a 1978 280Z ❤️
Invent a time-machine, go back to 1980, invest heavily in Microsoft, Apple, buy Datsun Z cars to mothball for 2025, date several big hair shoulderpadded ladies and comeback home.
One of the best Mercedes Benz of all times.
Best car Nissan ever put out. The Datsun 240s and 260s were just as good. I still see Datsun trucks on the road.
You didn't mention the 1982 280ZX Turbo w/ the Borg Warner 5 speed manual transmission. It solved the lack of manual transmission problem, that the 1981 mode had. My brother had one, & it was awesome. Really pulled away, when that boost kicked in! It was the pinnacle of the 280ZX series.
You knocked it out of the park, your production and eye for details were great! I had a 1980 black & gold 280ZX slick top 2+2 with the 5-speed manual. A really fun car that went like lightning in a cloud of rust, it too became a victim of the midwest seasons. Not exactly a supercar by any stretch but it was right for the time. Woefully underpowered compared to the earlier models but it didn't suffer from the carburetor problems or clunky feelings of the 260 and 280Z. I had the Teleray sub model that had some extra trim and interior touches, tack-on gimmicks that gave it a more refined feel at the cost of the sportier intent. This is a car that will never have a parallel in the future.
The name 432 is because it has an engine with 4 valves per cylinder, 3 carbs and 2 overhead cammes.
25:39 I'll never be able to see that 83 and not think of Smokescreen
When introduced to the US the Z cars succeeded for the same reason the E type (which was a bit heavy and long in tooth by then) did. It looked as good as a Ferrari, drove as good as a Ferrari and handled as good (in truth a bit better) as a Ferrari for a fraction of the price. Plus they were more reliable. They were light nimble and fun to drive. When the ZX was introduced they were headed down the same path that doomed the RX7 and Supra. In moving upmarket they became more luxurious but gained size weight and price loosing some of their nimble handling along the way. The latter two began to drive off a good chunk of their original core buyers. Fortunately the Z family of cars lasted longer than those of the Supra and RX7. My personal favorite is the 280Z 2+2. A friend in high school had one, I thought the longer roof line look more elegant and when the 2.8 wasn't being strangled by emission equipment it was decently quick.
I was the unofficial owner of a 1974 260Z for a few minutes when I was 9 years old. It was late 1978 and my future sister-in-law wanted a new car but said no one would buy her old car. I said I had saved $7 and offered it to her for the car. She looked at my brother, smiled and said yes. I got the money from my bank, gave it to her and she handed me the keys. I was so happy. I wanted to go sit in my car, so we went outside and I sat in the driver's seat. When we came back in, my brother said to give her back the keys and she handed me back the $7. I didn't want to do it, but I knew that it wasn't a fair deal for her. I knew that cars cost a lot more than that.
Yes he is a superstar
Terrific work 🐯🐅
Had a 1981 280 zx turbo.. was bought as a beater and drove hard.. so much under body rust it was not safe.. fun car tho
