Fun trivia: Hodja, more likely known as Nasreddin Hoja is a Turkish historical figure from the Ottoman era. He has like tons of hilarious clauses based around him that holds up to this day and generation. They got his theme and circuit perfectly and I was very surprised that he is an actual playable character in a game like this. Greetings from Turkey, I am binging your vids atm.
One thing that always stood out to me in this game is the cast of characters. There's a bearded guy with a flying carpet, the frankenstein monster, a surfer girl, a brute, a sumo, a British aviator, a rich kid and a savage? Sign me up! I also really liked being able to customize your own cup with whichever track you want in any order you want. That's cool. Also, soccer mode.
as a kid, I remember seeing an ad for this in Nintendo Power - the game came bundled with the Super Multitap allowing 4 players to play. I had my parents buy me it and it was fun trying out all the different racers and the soccer battle mode
They relaized a fullscreen single-player and a four-player splitscreen mode without any additional chips on the cart like Mario Kart had. Even Nintendo was impressed. Those guys were technical geniuses.
there's a track that looks exactly like luigi circuit from super circuit w out the rain and a track that gives off luigi's mansion vibes. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this game.
Never played this version, although I did rent the Saturn port back in the 90s and it was fantastic, I played that for hours... not sure how good the Ps1 version was
For the time it was nice and when it came out I bought it for like 100 guilders...It wasn't as great as Mariokart but I loved it. Nice music, nice graphics but it kind of died out after a while...Can't imagine what it would have looked today if the game was continued just like Mariokart did...It would probably have looked the same, but with more options, better graphics and more characters. A missed chance...
Its not a bad game or something, but it does get boring after a while. Mariokart has better replayability, but I do like the character design and their weaponry quite a bit.
If the SNES can only show one background layer when using Mode 7 then how come the backgrounds seems to be separate from the track here and also have parallax layers too? And how are they pulling off the even more advanced stuff seen in multiplayer where it has up to four separate play views, all with the backgrounds showing similarly looking separate layers from the track?
I belive that they are switching Modes mid frame. So everything above the track is rendered in a different mode then they use HDMA to switch modes mid frame. This games seems to be very well optimized for being able to do that and stay at 60fps even in 4player mode. That's also how split screen is done. They change the camera position mid frame for each player.
I watched an embarrassing amount of this video in confusion over the characters from the show not being present before I realized.. this isn't Speed Racer
I'm curious, does anyone know if this game runs at 60fps on SNES, or is it running in a lower framerate than normal for these systems because of all the stuff it's doing at once, particularly once it gets into the 4 player split-screen mode?
I just got this game and it seems to run at 60fps even in 4player mode. It's a pretty cool technical showcase for the SNES as well as a pretty fun game
@@inceptional Yeah, it's just well optimized and designed from the ground up for the SNES. People always talk about how the snes is slow, but it really isn't. A lot of programmers knew how to optimize the 68000 (Genesis CPU) better then the 65816(SNES cpu) so a lot of SNES slowdown could have been avoided. It's really a misnomer that the SNES was super slow, people just see a higher clock speed on the Genesis and assume it must be 2x as fast. It's not really as slow as people think. For these old consoles it was more about understanding the CPU architecture and taking advantage of it. The 68000 was just way more popular, especially in the US. But I'm rambling.
@@MrBillgonzo Yeah, I think there's a few games that show what you say to be true, like this game, Uniracers, Super Smash TV, Super Aleste, Top Gear 2, R-Type 3, Scrambled Valkyre, Road Runner, Wild Guns, Winter Extreme Skiing and Snowboarding, F-Zero, Rendering Ranger R2, and even the Sonic the Hedgehog fan demo rom and so on.
@@inceptional Yeah, Rendering Ranger R2 is an especially great example of how the SNES can throw a ton of sprites on screen with no slowdown. edit: Oh man, I never played Super Dimension Fortress Macross before. Amazingly fast stuff!
When I was a child, thanks to Street Racers if my liver Is OK, because I was a Megadriver and has no game to play like Super Mario Kart!!! On Megadrive something is Better....the soundtrack for first
+Lord Maximus You must be tripping, the megadrive version looks and feels better, the graphics in the rumble and soccer mode are much more detailed. The Snes version just looks like they splatted together some tracks. The megadrive game looks more polished, and it definitely played better.
24magiccarrot I'm always tripping, but the SNES version is far superior! Street Racer in mode 7 style graphics comes totally natural to the SNES. The mega drive hardware was never designed for this, its strengths lay elsewhere.
@@owen800xl I would say it's the worst. The Amiga version looks like it runs worse. But yeah, this game was designed for SNES and the MD version is not the same game at all. Same graphics but it's more of an Outrun style racer. Some people like those kinds of games better than kart racers,, but I always felt like Mode7 racers were more advanced since you could actually drive off the track. Outrun style games force you to stay on the track and feel a little more mindless to me. (Not that that's always a bad thing) And the battle and soccer modes in the MD version have no rotation so those modes aren't even the same game either.

There's no surprise about the inclusion of Hodja, as I also come from Turkey and grew up with the wonderful Hodja stories. :)
I played this to death as a kid. Soccer mode is brilliant, spent hours on end on that one. By the way, Hodja is the most OP character ever.

Street Racer is the OG Rocket League!!
I remember playing this game when i was a kid.
So true we played both. 11.11 Angels protect us all
They relaized a fullscreen single-player and a four-player splitscreen mode without any additional chips on the cart like Mario Kart had. Even Nintendo was impressed. Those guys were technical geniuses.
That soccer mode literally was Rocket League before Rocket League ever was a thing :D
I absolutely loved this game. My brotjer had a copy and played it all over Christmas
1:59 "Yeah, it looks pretty damn ugly and your field of view is pretty narrow"
You didnt even see the 8 player split screen in the PS1 port :O
Street Racer was a game I always wanted to play growing up, after reading about it in a Nintendo Power magazine.
Street Racer is like Mario Kart, but made for those - like myself - who didn't like the lose and slide heavy controls and the missile heavy combat.
SNESdrunk the G.O.A.T. Str8 killa no filler.
Straight facts my g 🔥
This is ttue
Legend has it that the Sega Saturn version supports 8 player Split-screen. I'd love to try that out.
I really wish there was an option to turn off all the items and stuff littered on the tracks in this game, which I honestly really can't see anyway.
One of my favorite snes game.
I noticed one thing. It's a fake full screen game:
The background sprites on the top are statics. Very smart programmers!!
there's a track that looks exactly like luigi circuit from super circuit w out the rain and a track that gives off luigi's mansion vibes. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this game.
Reminds me of Battle Cars, underrated SNES game.
bought it blind and tought "a mario clone what could go wrong". but its way more to be honest its a very fun race and technical very well done too.
I had this game the control is also very good
Loved this game when I was a kid :) nice to hear it still holds up
Wow, I had in fact written this game off as a "Cheap Mario Kart Rip-off" turns out I was missing out! I'll have to give it a shot sooner or later...
Rumble mode is the best haha! had good times playing that one with my friends. very funny 😁
Never played this version, although I did rent the Saturn port back in the 90s and it was fantastic, I played that for hours... not sure how good the Ps1 version was
I got the PlayStation version, probably similar enough to the Saturn.
This runs so smoooooooth

Short answer is YES! Great game and funky music!
Its not a bad game or something, but it does get boring after a while. Mariokart has better replayability, but I do like the character design and their weaponry quite a bit.
This game Is a gem, my favorite racer on the Snes
Had a lot of fun as a kid playing this
SMK THE GOAT OF SNES. ALONG WITH NHL 94, MARIO, MKU3, NBA JAM, AND ZELDA.
I always felt this was more of street fighter meets car racing

It's interesting to see that the characters where inspired by street fighter 2.
thehumansilversurfer Well, Sumo San, yes, but aside from him?
Uumm... Darkstalkers i guess? Lol just kidding
I watched an embarrassing amount of this video in confusion over the characters from the show not being present before I realized.. this isn't Speed Racer
Probably thinking why tf do they look like mcdonald toys
Great Game loved it more than Mario kart
Street Racer was da bomb! Wished it was possible to play it on the more recent game consoles.
It’s coming to the Evercade in April 24.
The game font reminds me of Street Fighter 2
1:32 its e honda!!

Since the playable characters in this game are all racial stereotypes, this game would be bashed by social media if it were to be released today.
This game IS racist. Stop acting like people are weird for pointing out things like this.
