- I've found a new way to enjoy playing Ragnarok Online again. And it's all about putting the RPG back in the MMORPG.
I created a Discord server so that we can play together! The link is in the first comment pinned!
Many people commented in this video that either they already play like this, but alone, or that they would like to play like this. I was very happy to see that feedback! So, I created a Discord server. This way, we can organize on where and when we can play together! :) Also, it can be a nice place for us to simply share our experiences. That's one of the reasons I loved private servers, some of them will offer totally custom experiences that are interesting. It's hard to find one that does exactly the sort of thing you want though, especially if you need to re-download/update/register a client just to try it out, that's the main downside.

In 2019 I had a "mental breakdown" from farming so much and focusing on content that could benefit me financially.
I deleted all my maximum level characters and selled my end game equipment.
During the pandemic, I decided to play Ragnarok again but with these "self imposed rules" and when I got bored, I played the conventional way.
Since then, I haven't stopped playing Ragnarok, even alone sometimes, I can have a lot of fun without getting attached to the "meta", "grind" or "farm".
I would like you to share your discord so we can talk and develop ideas for gaming methods.

This is why I main Super Novice these past few years. I noticed I enjoy the game more the less productive I am, just sitting around and appreciating the server's small community.
é engraçado né, a época que lembro com maior carinho de Ragnarok foram enquanto ainda aprendia sobre o game, upando nos lobos em payon com pts enormes(mesmo sem os bonus de xp) onde todo mundo trocava ideia. A medida que fui ficando mais por dentro dos itens caros, up hard, virou um game mais sobre up do que sobre rpg mesmo. Gostei demais desse novo modo que tu apresentou, nao focando em ficar forte e com os melhores itens, mas sim e aproveitar o universo de ragnarok, junto com os amigos, trocando ideia, aproveitando cada mapa e suas pecualiaridades, isso que fez esse jogo encantar tantas pessoas antigamente.
Recomendo muito experimentar jogar desse jeito!
Mano, n sei se ja viu OSRS (oldschool runescape) mas la tem uma galeeera que joga assim, pelos msms motivos. Só pra dar alguns exemplos tem gente que se prende em 1 região do jogo e n pode sair de la, imagina um payon-locked player com o objetivo de fazer todas as quests possiveis e matar e dropar os itens de mpvs. Esse é só um exemplo mas tem muitas ideias criativas de como jogar. Eu, apesar de amar ver esse tipo de conteudo, nunca tinha pensado em fazer com rag, vc me deu uma otima idéia @@gamecitizen

you can do that on UARO, a classic Episode 13 99/70 Server with 5x Rates and around 1000 players. :)

There was a server in PRO that teleport was disabled in kafra and no bots.
Those were the best times of my life other than the first release of the game.
Edit: server name is Thor after looking it up.
It was bot free until a couple of months after and the warp was also reverted back I think.
Valhalla server on the other hand was purely bot free

what was the last server you played? Maybe you quit before it was released or missed it. There was a time where it had strict anti-bot rules. It had a brief time where bots got it using posiedon proxy but got patched after a couple of weeks. They also disabled warps, however, I am not sure if they eventually allowed it after a couple of months; maybe it was only on the first few months.

Thor - my server, had no flywing or kafra warp service; no bots but eventually had bots thanks to posiedon proxy

With the generation today with shorter attention spans and are more impatient, kids won't be enjoying this game LOL! They are also into graphics nowadays and the hype. People enjoying RO are just old people.
This is how Ragnarok Online used to. With all these mobile ragnarok version left and right having stamina limitations obviously removes the RPG in it. /sigh

So, we are playing in the official Brazilian server, bRO. But there has been many people saying they would like to play like this together with others, so I am thinking about opening a Discord server and sharing it in my next video, so we can organize and decide on a server to play together! Basicamente de anos em anos eu volto a jogar, upo um Wizard até o level 80/90 e ja fico cansado. Eu amo jogar no modo ultra hard, upando com o que o jogo te fornece, equipamentos base e usando minmhas skills para jogar em mapas mais dificeis, é assim que eu me divirto, não consigo jogar de forma facil com rops entre outros.
Uma vez vi um pro player de anos recentes dizendo que para montar um skill set da pra começar com o preço de um celtinha velho...sério, a que ponto chegou...
É um absurdo mesmo, o quão cara é uma build meta. E, na minha opinião, qual é a graça de pagar milhares de reais e já ter a build perfeita prontinha?

In 2021 I tried to go back after 15 years of not playing the game, first I've tried to play like it was back in the day, but it didn't work. I was getting pwned then I've found out they changed the base system of the game and now it was supposed to be getting eden quest gears...
I did it and the game just became dull. Eden just gave gears that made the game too easy.
Exactly, they made the game way too easy for the early game, which is precisely where we get our nostalgia from.
I find it funny how the RPG is a part of the title of this genre and people completely ignore it and wonder why theres no fun anymore. Sure we can blame the developers for shitty systems that offer nothing to bring a community together, but sometimes the answer also lies with how we interact with each other.
Exactly! The game has many problems, but out attitude has been one of the problems. Funny thing is that, when it comes to tabletop RPG, the game only works if we have the correct attitude. I guess we tend to get lazy when it comes to video-games. But MMORPGs are only as fun as we make it to be!

The good thing about RO is that they kept almost all of the old content, unlike maplestory where they got rid of almost all of them.
Exatly! That is key. That is the reason why people like me still play the game. The old ragnarok (at least most of it) is still there.

Highly recommend you get some friends for the challenge! Regarding servers, I think iRO works in your region, no? It's as a good a server as any, considering you will be playing with self-imposed rules, blocking any concern about pay-to-win stuff.
Muito bom o vídeo. Sinto falta do Ragnarok classico, onde tinhamos que fazer grupos, organizar itens e correr mapas para pegar um MVP as vezes. Hoje em dia está tudo muito acelerado, todos os personagens são horrivelmente fortes; voce faz tudo sozinho e nao precisa de ninguém, oque é muito chato.

I came back to this game in February, you know what I like the most about Ragnarok? The BGM, and after playing for a month I turn'd it off just to focus on the grind and watch some youtube videos while I play, after a couple of months the game started losing its colors and became just another grind simulator, just like Lost Ark and Black Desert which I stopped playing just for the nostalgic experience that is coming back to Ragnarok, the moments I have the most fun are the beginning and leveling, so now I think about making different characters, explore other jobs and enjoy the game just like I did in the past (never getting past lv 110 but having fun regardless)
I don't understand why people focuses so much on endgame, meta gear and hard content, but I do want to be part of it to experience the newer content and now that is my goal, no rushing, just taking my own time, maybe after getting to the "endgame" I'll start an "Ironman" gameplay just like you guys are doing, it sounds really fun and chill

Cara, eu penso da mesma maneira! Eu acho super válido competir no meta. Eu concordo com o pessoal que reclama dos nerfs em equips novos, pois de fato atrapalha essa competição no meta. Mas o que eu realmente gosto é, basicamente, o conteúdo antigo. Que ainda está no jogo! Essas regras extras forçam a gente passar mais tempo nessa fase inicial. Mas também aproveitamos os novos updates que fornecem equips free-to-play para low level. Recomendo muito jogar nesse estilo ironmen! A gente tá voltando a jogar por agora, se quiser, manda um oi lá np fórum! A gente se organiza pelo Discord. Ou a gente se esbarra em Rune-Midgard!
I feel you. The last time I played a year ago, loved the heck out of it but stopped and left around 110. Pretty much what happens every time.
Doing a solo leveling journey is pretty relaxing. I remember I leveled a monk years ago using heal/teleport cheesing as an acolyte and it was a lot of fun dodging around glast heim churchyard to get insanely fast levels.
But that's part of the problem, if you could do something like this back in the day you would've been in the top 1% of the server, now it's pretty simple. People have just gotten too good at gaming in general.
Or you can drink and play on drugs.

This reminds me of the ironman community in OSRS. I've tried to find people who play like this in RO and have seen some on forums and message boards but never found anyone willing to play together.
If there was a server dedicated to RP or restricted playstyles then I'd definitely give it a try even if its a renewal server (still would prefer pre-re tho) cause 90% of the fun in playing like this comes from sharing it with others who are also doing the same thing.

Yeah, the problem with official servers is the ip block. So, most likely, to play together with people around the world, a private server might be a better fit.

Man I recall our party of 7 before. we call ourselves Rogue7.. consisting of 1 LK, 1blitzer, 2wiz (frost and LOD) and 1 priest, 1Sinx and 1agi priest. man our party once called Osiris killer we I remember we creating lore about Osiris being traumatized because being sealed by the Rogue7. good old days. we are now more on drinking beers and just talk about our mishaps back then. cheers!

When I first started playing Ragnarok, I was very young and a complete newbie, first online game I every played. I thought that the thief class could steal from other players, so I would try to stay away from them! Good old times!

Ngl it was better that way since I get all the RO friends irl to play with there instead of just ingame friends. Also a complete newbie to mmo in general at the time, others focused on trying to max level fast, me Im just traveling around the world of RO instead bahaha. Glad its my first mmo since it such an open wide world with many map instead of other mmo which is more instance-based and small at the time. Theres that airship travel, doing quest to open some area like biolab and abyss lake and stuff. Good ol' times.

Thanks! I ahve a theory about old mmorpgs. I think the ones that got really big, they never die. Well, maybe one day, but I think they are like white-dwarfs, you know, the stars. They remain small, but with a very long "after-life". Only a few selected games ever reach that stage! I am happy I got to play Ragnarok in its golden age, during the golden age of MMORPGs, but I'm also happy that I can still play Ragnarok. I think it goes beyond nostalgia. It's part of our identities!

I am playing Ragnarok again here in the Philippines, and the server is 1 month old, its a episode 5 low rate server. And man, Im so addicted playing it again. It so nostalgic and kinda redemption for me because wayback 2004, I did not make my characters get rich level 99. And now I have 99 Sage and rogue.

You can use cold bolt as a fire mage because let's say during your enligtenment the fire and cold is simply the presence or absence of heat. You simply flip the formula of your mastered fire bolt and you came up with cold bolt. 😆
Hahhaha! Now, that would be a smart excuse! Not a fire-mage, but an entropy-controller-mage! Hahhahah! In my next video, I will share how it was my journey as a fire-only mage, and the job quest to become a wizard was a real challenge!
Never played ragnarok because i felt i couldnt get into it (too overwhelming at this point) and also unfun to play alone without connecting with a community i hate that notion of powerleveling just to have a character you don't even know how to use.
But this idea is gold if there's actually a decent amount of people playing on the same server or guidelines and chatter i could see myself playing for the experience of it
Indeed, being an old MMORPG, it's very bloated. It's hard for a complete beginner. And, actually, this whole thing started with a guy who wanted to play Ragnarok again, but they stopped 19 years ago, so the game was too confusing for him. And he wanted to play with others. Well, it worked! I'll try to build a small community of people who want to play together with these extra rules, making the beginning of the game the most important part. I'll keep sharing how it goes, and then you can join us at any time! You'll be most welcomed!

if you want to play the real ragnarok play on low rate private server
I think that, with these self-imposed rules, anyone can get an experience similar to low rate in any server. I will talk more about this in my next video. But, yeah, low rate servers are usually better!
This brings me nostalgic feelings about the late 2000s and early 2010s where role play clans where a thing and you could have unique experiences and build relations with people that would go outside the game.
I was a important part of my late teens and definitely was a part of what I am today.
Makes me happy to know that this flame never died and somehow rekindled again nowadays. I pray that this brings back the strong RP community that bRO once had.

I highly recommend you trying! Besides the rules we used (like, not using Kafra storage), I think the rule that brought me most fun was the rule to use only fire magic!

It is harsh! So much so that the one member of our group that hasn't taken any break from the challenge, he has started using storage. Mainly because he created many characters in that style. But it's all about rule number zero: have fun. If a rule is too harsh, simply drop it when it's no longer fun.

Playing without storage/kafra would be miserable.
It is miserable! Hahahha! The most committed person in our group gave up that rule, but mostly because they created several characters in this style in the same account. But, for a good amount of time, some of us had merchants as alternate characters, and they would be the "storage". We had to literally travel to meet the merchant so that we could "store" an item! But it was fun!

I made my own offline server to scratch the itch of the good old days of Ragnarok online in early 2000, it's been fun but lonely so I added a priest bot to accompany my adventure (lol)
Well, I guess I enjoy sharing the world with strangers. While playing with this "hardcore-character", strangers would find it interestering and start talking. I'm, like most fo us I guess, mostly a solo player. Idk, I guess it makes the experience more "real" somehow. How long have you already spent in your offline server? It would be inviable, but imagine adding tons of bots to make the world look alive! xD

Indeed! I never knew about Nuzlocke, but I liked it so much now! Though, in Nuzlocke, I'm not sure if rp elements are added.
I could think of a few rules that would be in the spirit of that. Such as, you can upgrade gear but you MUST upgrade gear after a certain amount of time or battles (to simulate eventual item wear/repair), if you do not have the upgrade materials at that point, you must throw away the item (you can't repair it, it's broken, it's trash). You might highroll some well-upgraded gears this way, but you're probably gonna lose a lot more, and have to keep up with ways to find replacements.
And permadeath as well, because, of course.

I've been playing iRO chaos for a month now and I'm so enjoying all the new contents, 4th job, etc. I might do this when I got bored but for now there's still so much to explore for me.
Definitely! If you are enjoying the new content, keep on it! Actually, I think this style of gameplay works best after you have reached all the good gear, max lvl, etc. Once you get bored with the end-game content, you can try this different style of gameplay!
I started playing with my bff and my boyfriend, the latter hasn't played the game before.
We have a lot of fun just discovering places, their history, etc.
I do a lot of grinding on the side in Kunlun.

I wish to come back to Ragnarok, but official servers now have restricted drops because they sell it in their own store, I searched for low rate and the idea of low rate for people nowadays are 100x (lol), I swear that I'm almost studing eAthena to create my own 3/3/2 private server.
Yeah, the restricted drops are so bizarre, considering that bots ain't a problem anymore! Not to mention that restricting drops never stopped bots from harming the economy... I think that, if you add self-imposed rules, any server can be good. I really mean it. I think that the essence of ragnarok, that old ragnarok that we loved, is still in the modern servers, but buried under cash shop items and other things. But it's still there. Playing with these self-imposed rules make the game harder in a way that is different from simply lowering the xp rates. I would totally do this. How? I stopped playing RO without ever achieving lvl99 transcendent job (is that the name? Anyways, lord knight and high priest were my characters, also had a lvl 90 blacksmith, never transcendent). The lack of teleport is a bit of a bummer, but manageable as long as there are maps available. Anyways I doubt any friends of mine would ever join…

O algoritmo do youtube anda fazendo maravilhas ultimamente. Eu gostei bastante dessa ideia de um modo praticamente ironman (como usam no runescape) e com uma certa enfase na parte de RP. Eu queria muito que existisse um server de RP do Rag, que é um dos poucos (senao o unico) jogo que eu de fato fadia um RP, levando em conta que eu fazia bastante com meus personagens babies e com minha parceira de jogo na época. Ganhou mais um inscrito meu bacano e to ansioso pra ver continuação disso e quem sabe até participar dessa jornada, embora eu não goste muito do bRO por causa das limitações do servidor com relação a certos drops e habilidades.
Obrigado! Muita gente comentou neste vídeo sobre quererem jogar desse jeito ou que já jogam desse jeito! O Thor tem alguns limites chatos, mas eles já retiraram alguns (por exemplo, agora noviço pode usar teleporte e portal). Mas, olha, jogando nesse modo "ironmen", sinto que qualquer servidor de ragnarok se torna bom! Eu acho que a essência do ragnarok tá aí ainda, só que soterrada debaixo de um monte de item overpower de cash shop e outras insinidades que a Gravity trouxe.
Houveram servers focados em Roleplay. Eu cheguei a mestrar em um desses inclusive. O maior problema é o pouco interesse e tal.

O melhor a se fazer é só ter uma comunidade dedicada a isso e ter missões cativantes que façam as pessoas se sentirem imersas lendo. Tipo o que Final Fantasy XIV faz. Existe uma comunidade dedicada a isso e a história é incrível :)

For me what renovates the gameplay is variation, there are like 2430879879243 maps to level and explore different types of mobs, but we are used to go to the same places everytime.
I rather exchange eficiency for variation for the sake of the experience.
Even to this day i find the mob/map design and the graphics very charming.
Indeed! There is an immense variety of builds. I consider as one of the main qualities of the game. Even sandbox MMORPGs, like Albion, are still far from having the same amount of build variations as Ragnarok.

Its been a long time since I played Ragnarok Online these way
I've always role-played as a Knight my whole life, tried to be a real one of characters too, something like only limit myself to a Peco-peco for fast-travel only, not Kafra teleportation but walking through all the map itself. Using one spear and sword weapon counter-changeably for the sake of skill, using a remedy tools like potion on a limited amount and finally, decided to surrender myself to the legion of hidden Dragon Knight by the end of my character journey story. The thing is, I only played by myself, its a bit lonely but its fun none the less. Thank god I'm not the only one think of these

Recently started playing again on iro official chaos server and I've been loving every minute of it. Glad a lot of us seem to be returning as of late.
5:35 agreed looping daily/weekly instant dun is really boring even i play solo too when in open dungeon even it's only solo no party but not silence and lonely.
What ruioned my self from playing Ragnarok(And many many many many other games) was playing league of Legends
Mobas have RPG elements, its casual, fast pace and we get what we need very fast.
I might say League of legends sucked 1/3 of my life.

I used to install Ragnarok On Xmas late night, then start to play as archer and going to all nostalgia places leveling.

I feel you on the instances. I've felt a similar way even back in the days when WoW came into popularity, where a lot of the endgame revolves around instances. In that game as well, even 20 years ago, and even with a party, the instances were good but they heavily incentivized playing them over, and over, and over again to get everything you actually want. It really took over the parts of the game that were actually good, and it's sad to see it only leaned on more heavily as the years went on, in WoW and many other games and eventually RO.
I last got into the game a year ago, a returning player similar to the one you're describing. I found my own fresh ways to play, primarily the Doram race, and started developing my own self-imposed rules, not super strict but things like going unarmed because their high ASPD ranged attacks are funny. My build ended up being more melee-focused than the common Doram builds, and it felt nice and unique, even if I wasn't nearly as powerful as them (also helps that Doram is OP for early leveling so you really can do whatever you want). And of course, hats, Ragnarok Online's original popular self-imposed restrictions, I almost always prefer looks over stats for those, as I and many players have done through RO's existence.
I do love self-imposed restrictions, I can offer many more examples but this post is already very long. Thank you for reading, as a reward, quick tip about picking up items. You can 'cancel' the animation and pick up another item instantly if you click an item on a different tile, and you can repeat that back to the same tile or another one as much as you need. You will pick up more junk this way, but it's far more quick once you get the hang of it. I play on North American server but it should work anywhere, I'd think. Give it a try.
I never played WoW, but from what I have read about WoW, I think Ragnarok leaned too much towards that style, at the expense of its original style. And I didn't know that trick about getting items on the floor! All these years playing the game and I'm still learning new things! Thanks!
cara, sempre joguei no bRO e sempre pensei em algo assim, QUE-LEGAL. É basicamente entrar num roleplay mais "pesado", constante e compartilhado, o que torna a coisa realmente divertida e empolgante por um período mais longo.
Parei de jogar há quase dois anos por n motivos e tenho me tentado manter longe do jogo por questões de saúde mental, mesmo, mas ESSE ragnarok proposto por vocês, que lembra muito mais o ragnarok de 2004, este é saudável :) talvez eu me junte!
Problema de MMORPG, principalmente quando é bom, é o perigo de viciar, e pior ainda quando caimos na armadilha de gastar dinheiro na loteria dos tickets de promoção. Mas, cara, jogar dessa maneira, com regras adicionais e um role-play leve, não apenas tem sido muito mais divertido, como me fez desencanar completamente de gastar com rops, exceto com visuais. E jogar de leve, aos poucos, sem pressão. Recomendo muito! Se algum dia vc quiser entrar no jogo, manda um rodex, apenas mensagem, pro meu char, Flamma de Geffen. Ou dá um oi lá no fórum!
I'm playing Ragnarok M for about 3 years now, but it is so lacking in gameplay, and it is so pay to win, and so lore unfriendly that it makes me sick. Your video really makes me want to go back to og Ragnarok.
Come back! :) You will probably get shocked by all the insane overpowered cash shop gear that is available, but if you play in this ironmen-rp-style, any server will be a good server to play ragnarok!

Ah outra coisa que eu gosto muito que eles fizeram nos ragnaroks de celular é reformular várias skills e adicionar habilidades novas, isso é especialmente bom pra classes que precisavam parasitar pra conseguir upar, como o Sábio por exemplo que usava as habilidades de Mago apenas e sempre tiveram uma dificuldade imensa de upar sozinhos. Gostaria que existisse isso nos servers de Ragnarok convencionais.. :(
Sim, essas mudanças foram em todos os servidores oficiais. Algumas das mudanças mais recentes, de poucos anos pra cá, de fato melhoraram o jogo, principalmente pra iniciantes. Mas os Ragnarok de mobile tiveram mais liberdade criativa, com mais classes e skills. O clássico de pc continua igual, com as classes 4 agora (no bRO, deve chegar ano que vem). Mas com os equips de cash shop, meio que introduziram "novas" skills. Tipo, equips que buffam alguma skill básica fraca, tornando ela forte e mudando a dinâmica de jogar com a classe.

After Ornstein's Return To Morroc server, which was IMO the BEST ro experience I've ever played I'm enjoying in RTM based servers. Now I'm on Echoes Of Morroc and they are doing a great job so u should give It a try.

Gravity cares so little about the quality of the original ragnarok. They are explicity about just making cash grabbing mobile games "inspired on Ragnarok" that only last a year or so. They even admit that in their yearly financial report!

Pretty much! I used to play D&D just before discovering Rangarok Online, actually. For me, role-play in D&D is a lot about acting according to the character, more than "acting". That's why I think it works super well not only to add extra rules, but to joint them with a light role-play background. It can be a lot of fun, I recommend!

Exellent choice. I've been doing this for quite some time. We havee to spice this up when you are an old player and you have most of the gear. My self impose rule on one of my characters is that he was allergic to fish and sea products, so I couldn't use Fresh Fish to heal. With other I made her vegetarian, so no Meat, no Monster Feed, No Fresh Fish and so on. It is certainly interesting.
Oh that is great! You could make one that is "drunk", so the character always over spends pots. Very good idea!

Basically! :) But, in addition, there is also extra rules. I mean, the rp goes hand-in-hand with the extra rules. It's like how in D&D, role-play is not only about acting "in-character" but also making decisions that make sense with the character you are playing. For instance, if your character has low intelligence in D&D, you should avoid making intelligent choices, even if you don't go full-on acting "in-character". I like to act "in-character", but I also strongly recommend others to incorporate light rp background into their gameplay!
Subscribed! Ragnarok is one of my first love! It is the game of my dreams, but I feel sad that I don't get to play it with others anymore. The most fun I had with Ragnarok is having to play with others. I wish I can join this new way of playing Ragnarok Online.
To my surprise, many people commented in this video saying either that they already play like this or that they would like to play like this, but with others. So, I will open a Discord server, and announce it in my next video, inviting people who would like to play in this way. In that Discord server, we will be able to organize and decide on a server to play!

this is how ive always played this game. setting up rules. Forcing myself to use crappy builds. only using under whelming gears and weapons. Leveling to 99 in low level maps. "Hmmmm i wonder if i level to 99 at alligators how many ygg seeds i will be able to accumulate" stuff like that.
I only discovered that way of playing now, and it was much better than I imagined. I mean, I thought I would get tired soon, but quite the opposite! And it's the best way to enjoy the older parts of the game, which are still there.
im playing this game again like 2 week ago, and the best time im playing when i can play with my friends and being crazy like dead and kill every seeing mvp like were in sam team and still enjoying playing this game with my friends, and alwasy looking new places for searching experience not repeating
