Great video! This was my first attempt at whittling, my tree didn’t turn out as clean as yours but I’m happy with it!

Hi thanks for your great video, I saw you use always this knife and it cut the wood as butter, what is it?

That would be the excellent Helvie knife! If you want one, you're probably gonna have to send them an email and be put on a waiting list.

For the tree trunk can I make it a more cylinder shape rather than a tapered shape?

Yeppers!! I just like the way it looked personally and wanted a wider base for it to stand on.

Do you use Pre-stain or anything like that before you paint the wood? I’m using Basswood and am worried it might absorb my paint.

      @CarvingisFun  2 роки тому +2

Currently no, but if you are thinning the paint, it would be a good idea to put a clear primer base of some sort for best results

Love your channel. Learned a lot. Just posted a video where I hang a hatchet with an opinel. Would have never tried one if I hadn't seen your review.

      Thanks!
Those opinel knives are super useful, I usually reach for mine if I need a decent blade with a super sharp edge.
By the way, do you have any good suggestions for carving axes? Always wanted to try one out but have yet to start looking at what to get.

@@CarvingisFun High priced Swedish axes aren't my thing. The steel is harder but it's sometimes impossible to sharpen without power tools. I and most prefer axes soft enough to be file sharpened. Edge retention with an axe you use only on rare occasions is nice but I still prefer the ability to easily sharpen since axes are a lot thicker than a carving knife.
Do you want to buy a finished product or are u OK with hanging a hatchet yourself? I used to use a hewing hatchet for carving but honestly most hatchets can be set up for carving. If you're serious you can get a hewing hatchet with a single bevel but i suggest the cheapest u can find so u can practice sharpening without messing with a premium priced carver.
Premium axes should come finished. Meaning you don't have to set a primary bevel. The prices of premium carvers can be very high. When you hang it yourself the prices are much more reasonable. Even on ebay you can get a single bevel vintage hewing head for 30-60 dollars. I make my own handles for free by air drying wood I process myself but hatchet handles are very affordable.
There's some hatchets that are sold new now for 30-70 thst can be set up for carving but that will take a little time with a big file to set up. I'd personally love to see you carve a handle and hang a hatchet though but that's selfish haha.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind hanging my own hatchet. I have never done it but have been curious about the process and wouldn't mind giving it a shot!
I'm all in for quality tools and like to start off with a quality cutting edge right from the beginning. Sharpening won't be a problem, my wife tells me I spend too much time sharpening my blades anyways.
What are a few quality brands of both finished hatchets and hatchet heads that aren't, in your opinion, overpriced? Wife said I couldn't buy any more knives, she didn't say anything about hatchets 😆

@@CarvingisFun the great thing about vintage axes/hatchets is they don't even need to be branded to be useful tools. As long as they still have hardened edges they're good to go. Looking out for how worn/over-sharpened they're can be important. If you are at a flea market you can check an edge by hitting it with something up and down the axe head and seeing if the pitch gets higher near the edge where it should be harder.
Some of my favorite vintage brands are mostly for full sized axes. Can't go wrong with plumb, council tool, collins, Kelly. Pretty much all old vintage stuff is good honestly. You don't need to spend much. Even online I only paid 50 for a plumb victory hewing hatchet head.
Some more affordable new hatchets are council tool, Husqvarna. There's cheaper ones and more expensive but those are solid. Will take some work on the edges to thin for carving most likely.
Weight is also important. 2lbs is sort of heavy but you can get used to it. 1-1.5 is probably what most people prefer. The heavier it is the more material you can remove at once. With handle length I prefer shorter. 14 inches is great. Over 15 is too much. People have different preferences.
Another great thing about axes/hatchets is how you can customize them to your hands and needs. So it pays to experiment with shaping your own handles.
