Appreciate your time putting this together, thanks. My wife and I just started with our own pawns and plan to follow this series for the rest of the set. We are finding this to be a very calming, meditative hobby. Great stress reducer!

Having looked at your video, I cut all my blocks to 2 inches. I’ve done the knights, and was just about to begin these pieces. Luckily, I didn’t throw away my wooden ends that cut off. My idea from here is just gorilla glue to use as the peg bottoms. Whew.

Love this. Have you ever tried burning the basswood to make the black pieces? instead of staining?

I literally just picked up a new wood burning kit to start playing around with. Currently dont have a lot of time using it but I think it is a viable option.

Hey, love the chess series! Keep em coming!
I'm looking to get into whittling, what knife/other equipment do you recommend? Thanks in advance!
P.S. I live in the Netherlands, so "guidelines" would be better than exact products

      Howdy!!
If you want a basic guideline to what you will need to start whittling check out this video showing several options you can use: ua-cam.com/video/KlxFIzSV-Zc/v-deo.html
Here is a quick breakdown for ya:
Knife - most pocket knives will get the job done. thinner blades will slice through the wood easier and shorter blades are easier to control. Good whittling focused brands that sell worldwide are Flexcut and beavercraft.
Sharpening and honing tools - keeping your knife sharp will be what makes or breaks many peoples first experience. A basic sharpenig stone or set (400 grit and 800 grit) or sand paper (same grit, wet dry automitive sandpaper) glued to a flat surface will be good for shaping the edge. You will also need a leather strop with polishing/honing compound to get your knife sharp and is what you will primarily use to maintain the edge. Beavercraft makes an excellent honing strop kit.

These bihops are definitely harder than the other pieces! I blew out my first bishop working on the hat and head. Just gotta figure them out and then the king and queen which look even harder!
