It would also be nice if employees were trained to stop the public from putting their mugs in grocery carts. No good of little one should have to sit on an open dog’s butthole. Service dogs, yes, pets, stay home.

This is deeply disappointing. I've been a frequent customer of this particular Value Village for the last few years now. Always had a good experience with them. But now, this incident has cast them in a very unfavorable light. It's shameful how James was treated. To be honest, I don't feel like I want to shop at their location anymore because of this. From your feet to your beak you are truly a wonderful man. As for the employee his disability is not as visible as yours. His disability is his lack of respect and empathy and he should not be working in a public setting.
If y’all actually took the time to dig through the ADA site regarding service animals you would see that: he doesn’t need a card (but probably provides one because of people like the employee in question), his dogs don’t need service animal vests, people are allowed to train their own service dogs, there CAN be more than one service animal, and they CAN be in a stroller. You all have the ability to find the truth for yourselves. The ignorant comments are entertaining af but the reality of the situation is so sad.
I am a service dog handler myself. Im so disapointed, the fact that poeple dont "have time" to educate there employees or have someone else com and educate their employees just maks me mad. And yes under the ADA (americans with disabilites act) you can have two service dogs. Also service animals are protected under the FEDERAL LAW. which means it is illegal to distract, or deny a service dog acess to a public area. Service animls are allowed any place the public can go.
He also stated one stares at him to alert, how can he do that in stroller? Growling to alert is not allowed. He stated his dog barked maybe it was disruptive, especially since that is not a trained task
You are full of it. If the dogs cause a problem or make a mess, they are allowed to tell them to leave. If the dog is not trained for a certain disability it is not a service dog.
Under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), a Federal law, SERVICE dogs, trained for a specific action MUST be allowed anywhere the public can go, even on private property. There IS NO official card or license for a service animal, unless some state mandates it, though a doctor's certificate is a convenient idea. Some confusion occurs due to the existence of comfort animals (emotional support animals) which frequently accompany their owners. These are NOT trained to do any specific action and DO NOT enjoy the protection that service animals do, except for housing, which MUST allow them, by Federal law. People are ONLY ALLOWED to ask an animal owner IF that is a service animal, and what it is trained to do. Failure to allow service animals IS PROSECUTABLE criminally and civilly.
I think the fact that he put them in the stroller probably made them seem less legitimate, but maybe he needed it for Mobility support and as long as the dogs are able to do their task then they’re totally loud under ADA law.
Sometimes dogs have to be close to their handler's head to perform their task. Or at least closer than being on the floor would allow them to be. But at the same time, they're not allowed in carts, and that's a fair rule that has no exceptions under the ADA. The stroller is a great compromise. It's the handler's personal property, it keeps the dogs under control, and it allows them to be close enough to his head to perform their task efficiently.
@asecretcourtofcrowsandcloc4084 yes depending on the disability, like mine I need to have mine in a stroller at times because I use it to help me walk and my service dog is a medical alert dog and is small so it it more convenient and also puts her closer to me where I need her. People need to be less judgemental and just read the ADA laws or just ask the appropriate questions. PERIOD!
To be clear, the cards he carries are _not_ identification cards. They are informational cards. He made it pretty clear that he has difficulty verbalizing his dogs' tasks and his rights, especially in stressful situations like having his rights challenged. Difficulty communicating is a very common thing with NF1, which, due to its very nature, is often accompanied by autism-like symptoms. So he carries the cards to do all the communicating and explaining for him. And since he needs the dogs nearer to his head than on the floor in order for them to perform their task, but he also cannot put them in a cart, the stroller is an excellent compromise. Very clever of him to think of it.
One time bagger, then checker at Kinggates safeway. Very polite, Large donation was set up to help with his surgery, He looked much worse. I remember his dog at the safeway. Large kudos to going forward.
There needs to be some kind of official way to tell which service dogs are real. Service animals for "emotional support" are NOT real. I've seen people bringing their pets into restaurants and placing them on tables. I don't care how clean you think your dog is, do not put them where people are eating.
@@SCP_Gate-Guardian You are a misguided jerk. You have no right to take anyone's Christian-given name and make it into something ugly. So you are full of crap about both things.
This man is so very sweet, and he didn't deserve that. That store would lose my business too if I saw that happen. Very sad he lost his first service animal.
Sue the store, they need to be taught a lesson. A store or restaurant can only ask what the dogs are trained to do and nothing else. What they did is illegal.
Instead of jumping to an extreme, how about Value Village inviting him back and giving a 5-10 'class' on his medical condition along with a company rep going over the service dog laws?
@@drjekelmrhydetrue. It's sad to say but I think they should have real service dogs be given some form of certification to prove that they are indeed true service animals. Either that or they need to figure out a way to prevent people of fake service animals from taking advantage of ADA laws. Currently like you said anyone can buy a vest that says "service animal" which makes it tougher for people with real service animals since there isn't much that businesses can do about the fake service dogs without breaking the law
THERE'S A FEDERAL LAW called the ADA that requires that the disabled must be accommodated. He can sue them. This is not only a legal problem but is a moral problem of the store employees.

WTH IS VALUE VILLAGE DOING, HASSLING CUSTOMERS REGARDING WHO HAVE DISABILITIES? IT IS NOT THE EMPLOYEE'S RIGHT TO DEMAND INFO FROM THE CUSTOMER ABOUT THEIR DISABILITY, NOR ABOUT THE SERVICE DOGS. THAT PISSES ME OFF! MAKE RIGHT WITH THE CUSTOMER, VALUE VILLAGE!
Because they have hundreds of others who walk in with their untrained pets claiming the same things as their animals bark and crap all over the floors. Like everything all the liars ruin it for everyone. A guy threatened to sue me once because his " service snake" nearly bit me when i handed him his order.... smdh
I think the main reason why that happened was because the guy didn't take him seriously. I have been using a service dog for over 25 years and I would never dress mine up like that. My service dog looks professional. Now I'm not saying that his service dog is are fake. Lord knows I'm not saying that but I think that was the reason why that person at Value Village didn't take him seriously. Value Village needs to make this right
People who bring non-service dogs in stores are ruining for people who need them. I've almost been bitten 3 times by random dogs. The state I live in does not allow workers to even question if the animal is a service animal, now every other woman has to bring their dog in stores.
I'm sick of people exaggerating how much non service dogs are in stores or anywhere. It's actually pretty rare. No you people aren't constantly seeing dogs in stores. You clearly just don't like dogs. Okay, then leave. You probably don't like disabled people either . Well enjoy your karma when you become old and disabled because old people become disabled in one way or another due to age. I've been bothered by workers so many times and made on the spot practically blocked , to Announce what my disability is to require one. People in general believing this bs that you have to buy a thousands of dollars service dog born and bred for the disability. No actually. You can train them yourself if you're competent enough. No you don't have to have a dr or therapist examine your dog in a lot of states and I've literally had so many therapists that don't even know their state laws claim this as well . And people think properly trained means they never get excited or wag or try to talk to customers or any dog behavior or show any emotion. They aren't robots. They're dogs. People that don't know anything about dogs or service dogs or service dog laws need to do society and disabled people a favor and just shut up. Stop inserting yourself in people's business and basically penalizing their dog , a little animal for crying out loud and by the way the employee drilling of disabled people emotionally hurts these dogs because they then feel like a " bad dog " and like they did something wrong. Dogs can feel shame and humiliation. My dog will frantically try to assist me if I'm getting anxiety so it's like thanks idiot, you just scared the h out of my dog and now he's in frantic assist mode and he's afraid to because he senses you're coming down on me the owner and him. Also workers and customers need to stop distracting and literally calling and waving and petting and everything else service dogs because you are actually untraining them and embarrassing the owner who doesn't want upset people or hurt feelings or to look like a jerk and causing that owner and dog to get into trouble because the dog will repeat those habits at other places including jumping on the counter if you asked the dog to do that or gestured. I don't think people mean harm by it but it's annoying. Several times I've had to retrain him . A few stores he actually ran amuck because he was treated like a regular dog , get out of character and just hang out which is cute to them but embarrassing to me and I'd get on to him at these places and the workers would be like no it's okay and come here and all that. Wtf boundaries people.
@@calvinh.8882excuse me can you point out a law for his state that says he can't have 2? Do you know for a fact the other dog isn't a service dog and that he's not trained from that one little clip? No ? Then shut up. You just don't like the owner and dogs. You are the one that shouldn't be in establishments until you can learn some empathy and social skills.
Come on now. There is no way anybody with common sense could see this guy, see his dogs, and think, well he needs to be asked to leave. Let alone see his license.
Maybe the worker thought the dogs being in a stroller they were not service dogs. And way too many people bring their pets to the store and try to pass them off as service dogs.
No excuse. The mind is obviously disfigured, had a head disfigurement and he has proper authorization. Prejudiced clerk or stereotyping service dogs to lab dogs and the totally blind.
We should all start calling them and asking them what their problem is with disabled people and their service dogs and that they are discriminating. Shout out loud and clear.
I was thinking new employe, but wouldn't one of the others employee's have said they usually let him in? If the store can't even bother to give an answer, people will start boycotting the store
Service dogs are great. James is wonderful. I have, however, had too many run-ins with people who abuse the system. It's not hard to get a doctor's note for your service dog and that's basically all you need. There are people who purchase fake service IDs online and completely abuse the system. You can't live in an apartment building or condo without a pass, get a fake service dog pass. You're dog is not allowed to fly with you, get a fake service pass. This hurts people with real service needs like James. Don't blame the store. Don't blame the employee who probably overstepped his bounds. Blame the people who cheat.
There are a lot of fake service dogs as you mentioned and people do abuse it. I'm not a fan of big government but there needs to be a federal government certification/licensing for service dogs. There are too many different service dog licensing/IDs, how is one to know which are legit? One license/ID authority is the way.
Actually for housing usually the landlord wants a prescription for a pet. It’s not for a service animal. It’s two very different things. One is prescribed by a mental health provider as well as a medical provider stating having a pet IN THE HOUSE would better the health both physically and mentally of them patient. This in no way has anything to do with service animals or anything outside of the building. It is strictly pertaining to the inside of the house. I had two cats prescribed and my landlord was against it until she actually saw what a difference it made in peoples lives especially how it changed me when I lost my heart and soul. When they passed she saw how I broke and to this day I have never been the same every single person I know says I’m different I feel it I feel empty. Those cats kept me alive they gave me the only joy I had in a life of trauma and abuse. So to say prescription pets are abusive of the system…screw you. They are a completely different system all together and they literally keep some people alive. I know a war vet with ptsd that if not for finding some abandoned kittens on the road he was going to eat his boom stick. They were not something he wanted but he saved them with all intent to find them a home after he got them healthy. Those kittens saved that man’s life for 15 years. He like me is lost without them. So those animals may be the best part of some people ms lives and their doctors and psychologists know this hence the prescribed pet. Yes people abuse all services break all rules and laws but that doesn’t mean you punish those who desperately need those services to survive.

Well Washington state and federal law allows businesses to ask two questions. 1 are these servicedogs. 2 what task do they perform. Both of those questions were answered. But there is no legal id card or badge, so showing that is mute. Now state law does state if animals are untethered or unleashed businesses may ask them to leave, also if they are barking or growling you can ask the to leave. Does not state how many times is too much barking or growling.

This is what happens when these things go unregulated. Those licenses aren’t official. They’re just an online form. People take advantage of it to take their pets everywhere. But now, this incident has cast them in a very unfavorable light. It's shameful how James was treated. To be honest, I don't feel like I want to shop at their location anymore because of this.

Did you miss the fact that the dogs growl at people? Thats not how a service dog acts.
@@CleverClover2023 I didn't even realize he mentioned that.
@@CleverClover2023 thanks for the info

@whatnow5313 him having 2 is questionable.
@ no it isn't Karen.
@@whatnow5313nope, multiple dogs are covered.
Apparently Value Village doesn't value their reputation.
This guy seems like a genuinely good dude .

@@calvinh.8882 ANOTHER LOSER IN THE COMMENTS!!! WHY DON'T YOU LISTEN?

There is NO doctors note... For service dogs... A doctor can obtain the service dog through certain channels if needed... However... No notes...

It's obvious that James isn't one of those people who lie about their dog being a service dog just because they want to take them into a grocery store (where there is food!) or another random store. He even carries them in a stroller- What more could they want? James is a good man. 👍
That's terrible, hope they reconsider your patronage😢
This is what happens when these things go unregulated. Those licenses aren’t official. They’re just an online form. People take advantage of it to take their pets everywhere. Then people who legitimately need a service animal get denied access because of it. If they regulate the service animal industry to require real licensing and certification things like this wouldn’t happen so often.
Cool story bro. Either follow the law or the government closes the business down.
@@SCP_Gate-Guardian there really aren’t any. Right now it’s just whatever the person says. A person could claim a cobra as a service animal. There needs to be legitimate licensing.

"Cool story bro" 🤪
I used to work at a place that trained Service Dogs. Our clients had regular problems because too many people brought their barking and/or attacking and/or peeing pets around with a bogus internet cards. People think youre mean for bringing it up but the truth is a lot of animal’s aren’t cut out for this work and its pretty stressful for them, and dogs that do get placed for this work are vetted and trained for 2-3 years along with the people they are serving.
They kick him out, not the dogs. I went thru this the las few years and its because the "providers" aughing at us, they are not good people and the truth is keep your job, we do not need you.
