Scotty Kilmer Hi Scotty I read somewhere 90% of accidents in minis are fatal. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
I gave up ......now you should buy a Toyota
My 02 Cooper S has 263k still going really good........
These have a feature for when they break you can roll the windows down, stick your arms out and drive it like a wheel chair.
Flintstoning my car seems like a more reasonable way

Haha hahaha 😂
Haha Not funny
That’s a stupid idea. Everyone knows you’re supposed to cut a hole in the floor and drive it like the flintstones.
"If we take off the stupid beauty cover...." Every time I hear it, I just laugh.
itsnotme07 same here
itsnotme07 Hahaha....me too
I remember my mom had a Mini that failed first smog due to burning engine oil. It cost $11,000 to have the cylinder head rebuilt after only 40k miles. Good thing she had extra warranty. Then she sold it.
@D.O.A. I am not sure either. Maybe the labor to remove all the valves and check everything. It took me a while to replace the thermostat on the Mini. So many hoses and plastic that you hope doesn't break in a small area.
Surprised it did not cost more to fix being POS BMW.
So, at this moment, there is one Mini Copper's owner thinking in your mom in every visit to the mechanic...
@3 AM Paranormale e Horror typical BMW, costly unreliable crap that is fun to drive when it runs. Surprised it did not cost more to fix.
@D.O.A. "Dealer"
“I just found the worst car to buy”
2 minutes later tells us about the low mileage, good price & how it can be a fun knock around car 😏
Or 3 minutes later mini just changed the game
often, worst, good, and best are relative to an individual's wants and needs.
BMW=Bring My Wallet. Before I started watching Scotty's videos, I bought a used Mini. When Scotty says money pit, you had better heed the warning. The Mini got hit by a truck and was totaled. Everyone was fine and I have never been so glad to total a car in my life.
One word, plastic. Even the chain guide inside the engine is plastic.
Thats true on many engines...like my ka24 which is bulletproof.
I have steel chain tensioners in my car. Then a few years later they changed to nylon.
Modern chain guides are made of or use a Nylon 6,6 surface. They use it to minimize chain wear because steel is porous an would require more lubrication which would increase engine design complexity, manufacturing costs, and service intervals. It’s actually an incredibly rugged polymer with a really high density and melting point (about 500F). It can also be finished with a flawless slippery surface rather cheaply, which is another benefit you can’t get with steel guides.
Tyco Bandit that’s got a lot of benefits I’ll admit but I don’t think it stands up well to all the detergents in the oils over time. But my main gripe is that and a lot of other parts aren’t designed to be serviced easily.
@@plightn timing chains are "supposed to" last as long as the vehicle - or maybe the engine. I know some vehicles have time intervals for timing chains for some reason, and some vehicles have problems with timing chains. I know seals go leak - but just like any vehicle, if the engine is fitted in there tight then it's just generally a pain to work on.
$35,000 dollars for a Mini!! I can buy a new Toyota Tacoma double cab for that!!
Rob Huddleston And have a 3x better vehicle. 👍
Ha! Over 50k USED, sold over here, used car dealer told me about a year ago.
You SHOULD buy a tacoma! I loved mine. It was a 2018 inferno orange. I highly recommend the sport trim and tonneau cover. The mpg hit wasn't worth it for the offroad. Also, the 2019/2020 is getting a whole suite of upgrades, including power seats from what I heard!
I mean, there's a lot one can but for $35000. Depends on your priorities.
You want to be bored to tears for 500k miles, get the Tacoma.
You don't care about money and only want to hoon around? Get a hot hatch. It doesn't matter which.
Way better than a MINI EMP by BMW
Scotty made a mistake, the kurb weight is actually 2800 pounds. The GROSS weight may be 3600 pounds. There's no way a car that small can have a kurb weight of 3600 pounds. Mind you, 2800 pounds is still on the chunky side for such a small car, should be 2200-2400 pounds.
I came to get my feelings hurt
Wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be
I have a 2002 Cooper S bought new, still runs great. These things are bomb-proof. Not bullet-proof, all BMW’s have sensor-related hypochondria, it has needed work over the years. But I have no complaints, it’s been a great car for nearly two decades now.
Same I got a 2005 S SUPPERCHARGER 6 speed with 28,000 miles on it 9 years ago
Now I’m up to 130,000 it ……it’s had some issues majorly the balancer ($800) BUT over all nothing horrible there are so many forms to read on what to look for you can nip it in the bud B4 hand, iv did the coollent reservoir myself after seeing the steam between the seal on the old one
now the one thing that’s doesn’t work is the AC (blows and full on refrigerated but no cold air) but that happen 4 years ago I’m use to it
My goal is to get to 200,000 miles on the same clutch ........🤘
I did 😞
I have 170000 miles on my 2008 MINI Cooper S. Yes repairs can be expensive, but if you maintain it yourself, it’s not bad. And there’s tons of quality after market parts. I’ve replaced my entire suspension system myself with after market affordable parts.
"There's no arguing that!" ...needs to be a t-shirt!
I had to change the alternator on one of these things and you have to take off the entire front end , when I say the entire front end I mean the ENTIRE front end . Let’s just say I had a cup of bolts at the end of it all
A church friend had her friend work on her PT Cruiser and he said it was hell just working on the front breaks. And damn thing was always breaking down.
The only guarantee you get with these is a MINI bank account balance 😂😂

i actually own one, i got it wrecked, i fixed it myself. i cant say it was difficult and i cant say its any real difference from a ford fiesta. I loved my fiesta, but i wanted a nicer interior, so the mini was it. i am pretty happy with the car. Key statement is do the work yourself.
That's what I'm figuring. If you do that and don't pay for labor, is repair work roughly similar cost to many other cars?
Got one a few years ago for my wife. A used 13 convertible S & couldn’t live it more! It gets 34 mpg, perfect ride for her run to work every day. Lucky for us the mini dealer don’t rip us off, they are the best shop I have ever dealt with. We are shopping for another used one... not new lol!

But, you have gained valuable experience that you can use going forward.
For the “worst car to buy”, you sure were praising it a bit more than I thought you would 🧐
Right? 😂
He's saying it's a bad car to buy new. Not that the car itself is bad mechanically. The car lost over 40% of its value in a couple of years and 40k miles.
His point was that you should either buy these lightly used for a good price or for dirt cheap as a fun throwaway car.
Don't buy a $10,000 with 80k miles because you're basically getting the worst of both worlds.
My F56 (same as this generation in the video) has 88K miles (bought at 49K) and it's still going strong. Engine and trans are amazing.
Honda parts cost as much,R56 older Mini parts dropped as soon as the gen 3 Mini launched, plenty of spare parts used for F56 in the UK here.
@@teggsy2165 yep!! I drove that Mini (2014) til 100K miles, traded it for another F56 JCW (2016). Drove the JCW until it was totaled at 117K miles.. bought a 3rd F56 JCW (2019). I've never had issues with any of them.
How about having to drop the subframe just to replace the clutch. That's always fun......
That's true of most front wheel drive cars, especially larger ones that have big subframes.
“It’s a cute car, there’s no arguing that” - Scotty
Scotty:
Hey MINI, you lowkey cute let's go on a date.
HAHA my little brother sent that.
Unless...
Scotty's right on those old Minis. I was in England in '71 and they were all over the place. I got to ride in a few. They cornered great but they had a very crude feel to them. And they rattled a lot. And the interiors were Lada-class noisy. I remember the rims being tiny. The engines weren't that great in terms of longevity, but you could almost rebuild them in your own garage, that's how simple they were. Many times it was just the valves and/or valve seals -- easy peasy.
We loved our 2010 Mini Cooper. It had great performance and a lot of room for a small car. At 90,000 miles the fuel pump went out, multiple oil leaks, and a lot of carbon built up in the engine. The repair costs exceeded the value of the car. Sold it. Miss it.
Did u get engine flush w oild change?
Funny thing is Mini is 9th most reliable car in the world. The old mini models had issues but Mini’s like this model are great. Scotty maybe check on updated model reliability. They have 5 star reliability. Don’t judge things based on the past.
"if we take of the stupid cover"... 😂 Scotty you are a legend, I became a mechanic because of you 🙂 I love your videos, it seems always easy to fix.. "Hammer here, there, take apart, put all back together" 😁

Which generation? 3rd?
He's been sarcastic lol
We had a 2011 Mini Cooper with 40k miles.....we got a note from MINI HQ saying for us to extend our factory warranty for the next 3 years it was going to cost $7,000!!
Immediately sold the car as I totally saw that even mini was telling us this car was going to start to give us mechanical headaches

Haven't had a single issue with my 2016 Mini Cooper 3 door. Get good quality oil and do regular maintenance. I disagree with his view that they lack power or speed, does 0 - 60 in 6.7 seconds which is properly quick. Take a car he loves like the Corolla, the 2021 XSE Apex fancy one is what I consider very slow at 8.8 seconds. A Corolla from 2016 is 9.8 seconds. Pretty terrible. A 2020 John Cooper Works goes 0 - 60 in 5 seconds flat, which is properly quick by any standard for a car.
If you’re ok with doing the work yourself, not a bad car. It’s not engineered like a domestic, which is great. They do have their quirks as Scotty mentioned, and do require a bit of preventive maintenance to keep running well. I picked up an 03 for $500, replaced that damn electric power steering pump, and have really enjoyed it since. I see it as more of a hobby I guess. Parts are comparably priced for the base model but do get pricey for the S and Work.

Hey Scotty...thanks for 'endorsing' the purchase of my then new 2004 John Cooper Works MINI Cooper S which has a supercharger, not a turbo and IS my fun car and has only 90,000 miles. You are so right about the struts...my rear right started dripping a little oil 2 weeks ago, but my local BMW dealer is so slack that after 3 days they still haven't got back to me regards replacement cost. However as my MINI is approaching 16 years old, I'm seriously thinking of your lease suggestion when it's time to update to a new MINI. I look forward to your videos as they are really informative and make so much sense...you tell it like it is. Mike in Australia.

I remember taking my leased 2007 Mini in for its first service (covered under maintenance plan). While I paid $0, the dealer printout listed $4,000 in costs! Did they rebuild the car? That said, the car was reliable for the duration of the lease, other than the horrible infotainment system.

Man, I'd love an old Mini, like the one Mr Bean drove. But I'd never buy one of the new models. I'd very much prefer tune up an old one than have my insides sold to pay for repairs in these newer ones.
I added a question about Mr Bean's car and the Mini. Where they well built then?
They are a pain, too. Just to get to the rear tail lamp bulb requires removing the rear shock.
@@657449 The early ones in the 60s were probably no different from any other car standards of the 60s. In the 1970s England had endless problems with car worker unions and these are generally thought of as the worst built models. Mr Bean's one I think was from the 1980s which was a lot better built. However they were so simple to maintain that a teenage girl with manicured nails could probably have the engine/trans out in an afternoon...you could get all the parts cheap including the shell. The automatic version also ran on the engine oil which meant it got fresh oil at every service. The designer (an eccentric) would not install a radio as "it distracts people from driving properly" LOL
I want one but the baseball cap model. I went to work on it myself of course.
My dad has a 2016 Mini Cooper S Convertible with 93K miles. Still drives like a champ.
The worst car ever....wait that’s my car!

The '60s mini was a death-trap. The fuel tank was badly placed and a rear-end shunt could spray the rear passengers with fuel, which could ignite. I had a relative die and another maimed for life in horrifying circumstances. Don't get one, even if you think it's cute.
All small cars from the 60s were 'death traps' compared with modern cars. The mini was no worse than a Renault 4 or a Fiat 500.
I got a friend who got into an accident in a new Mini, her leg and foot got mangled, she is now a cripple for life, granted she got hit by a truck but with how many trucks and suvs are around nowdays your odds arent great that it wont be one that hits you.
