I worked for midas for a week. I left when the service advisor told this old lady she needs brakes. It was a 95 Honda civic (this was 2010) it had 23k kilometers on it. No rust ridges and the calipers still had the OE paint on them. They had never got hot enough to take the paint off. They told this 80 year old she needed pads calipers rotors on all 4 corrners, the works. I quit after coffee that morning.

I took my 2010 camry to the local firestone shop to get the safety inspection about a year ago. Miraculously they found my power steering reservoir was leaking profusely. It never leaked before, and it didn't leak going into their shop, but there was a big puddle under the car. I'm positive they messed around with the hose clamp. They quoted over $300 to make the repair. I brought the car home and replaced the hose clamp, it hasn't leaked since. Total ripoff attempt

some have lost morals and have replaced them with money, but hey! that is the world we living in right? Is it supposed to be this way? what happened to hard, solid work!??
It all comes down to the top heads in dealerships or chain repair shops = the very people who push their technicians to have an environment of sub-standards, placing their employees under stress, if they don't meet the criteria, then they are terminated. This behavior is of corruption, and corruption is a sure way to exterminate our OWN HUMAN KIND! No war, no disease, nor death itself can make vanish of our kind, but corruption will bring our race to the brink, if not extinction itself.

I outlived my dentist. I had one doctor at Kaiser. Then I had his son doctor at Kaiser. The son retired a few years ago. My primary auto mechanic had his building torn down in November. He was so good that he did not advertise or have a website! My secondary mechanic used to work for my retired mechanic for years and has owned the shop now for 4 years. He doesn't advertise.
Conversely, last year I went to Costco for my "free tire rotation" and the "mechanic " failed to tighten the lug nuts and I had to call AAA. Costco also managed to strip my lug nuts over time and I replaced them.

I run a small chain of shops my father started 30 plus years ago and I see this all the time people bring me the quote from dealerships saying they need $1000 plus worth of work when in actuality they don’t even need work or they need minimum work done. The worst scam around me is firestone when they sell tires and include a “lifetime” alignment but when you go in for an alignment they try to sell them thousands dollars of front end work. I had a customer go to FS and they said no alignment because everything under the front end needed to be replaces. Customer came to us we looked at it and everything was damn near perfect. She went back to FS and they told her everything was bad again. It was a older lady and she called me from FS crying. I drove to FS and went to go look at her car on the lift when I walked in I spoke to the manager and had a small chat and when I left the finally did the lifetime alignment. She asked me what I told the manager and I told her the truth. The manager at FS brings all his personal cars to us to fix because he doesn’t trust the mechanics at firestone to fix his own car and he is the manager.

True, But its because people are willfully ignorant. Learning the basics of car maintenance to at least keep mechanics honest is not a difficult thing. I work in asset management and its the same thing. People will do anything to NOT learn about their car or finances in general. There is some sort of taboo in America and the general population think that car repair work is beneath them and finance is something you pay an "expert" to handle. Guess what? We're in the middle of a market crisis as it has dropped 30% this year due to COVID-19. Last year, none of my family members wanted to hear a word about finance or investing from me. I decided to move 90% of my 401k to bonds because an election year was coming and I was happy with the returns I had over the years. The bull market had to end at some point and we all know the market was propped by Trump's corporate tax break in 2017 and company buy backs. What happens this year? I'm up 2% YTD and a family member comes to tell me he's down 20%. He's 57 years old and this is costing him dearly. Imagine this guy has a $500k-$1mm retirement account balance. He just lost $100k-$200k!!!! But hey, that's the American way, we don't worry about things that we can pay someone else to do. To clarify, I work in the industry but I'm not a financial advisor so I don't benefit by talking to people about investments. Anyway, its a sad state of affairs and the goons that run these shady shops know it. American people are lazy by nature and will continue to fall prey to scams.

Here in Wisconsin those steel Power steering lines most certainly do go bad, they rust right through. There is a thing called preventative maintenance. There’s tons of things that can be passed off as: “it’ll be fine” “I’ll keep an eye on it” “it’s an old car” “I’m getting rid of it soon” As a mechanic it’s our job to inform the customer about potential problems, safety, reliability and neglected maintenance. Some people don’t know the difference between that and trying to sell you something you don’t need.

I do a lot of my own stuff, Some jobs il get a mechanic to do because of health and tools, when I had my 'toy' vehicles they NEVER went to a place other than a couple of places to do big jobs I needed a cert for like the rollcage. But I still keep my hand in.

That's why I love you, Scotty. I'm so lucky to have a good mechanic like you out here in CT. I always get told, eh you can wait on that just keep an eye and if anything changes come back. They could have tried to sell me a transmission on a 2004 car, but they didn't. We tried some stop slip in the thing and when it got too bad... They told me to junk it. I love honest people like you who don't try to screw people over. You try to educate us and get real.

My favorite quote came from Firestone I was there Getting two tires put on. They told me my brakes And rotors were bad and they would work up a quote even though I told them I wasn't interested. My brakes and rotors were perfect Their quote was almost $2,000 for cheap brake pads and turning my rotors. I laughed And said hell no. I did witness several other people getting scammed while I was in the waiting room. They always come out and say hey, can we talk to you we found something and that's when the scam starts. Most of the victims I witnessed were older People and fell for it Hook Line & Sinker. Firestone scammed these people between 1500 and 2500. Firestone has been doing this for years.

I've seen this many times. I remember as a teenager I had a neighbor (eldery widow) with 74 Nova. The only thing that it needed was normal things for maintenance like cap / rotor / plugs, air filter etc. She took it to Firestone because of the "super coupon". On the estimate list was things like rotors, drums, muffler, shocks, tires, battery, brakes all around, power steering pump, etc etc. It didn't need any of those things. It had a very slight miss when cold and a dirty air filter. She ended up selling the car for $300 dollars to a car lot because they said it needed 1800 dollars worth of work. The car lot was just as bad and handily bought the perfectly fine nova was basically swindled from an old lady who didn't know any better for 300 dollars. This nova was in great shape by the way being drove only by an old lady about twice a week to the grocery store etc.

My only issues I’ve had since I’ve owned the car were a pulley getting worn, transmission mounts going out, and a tune up which also had an ignition coil going bad. It can make us all look bad. I’m always straight with a customer I never try to upsell nothing. Then if something needs immediate attention obviously that needs to be addressed to the customer but if there’s something else in the next six months then advise the customer and let them know that they don’t need to repair now and plan on having it done later down the road. Thanks again Scotty you have a great day my friend.

Loved your story at the end about the "Muffler Shop" Mechanic. Glad you pointed out that there is sometimes a bit of "overlap". As a young kid, I bought a 1972 Caddy Fleetwood in Fort Worth ... huge 472 engine and rode like a Land Yacht. So one day it had rained in the morning but dried up mostly so I floored it getting on the freeway and went thru a "puddle" and the engine died. No knocking so coasted to the side and restarted the engine ... ran fine and no knocking. Placed in Drive and it died ... repeat many times until the Tow Truck came and hauled it to the Sear Garage near my house. They couldn't figure it out and wanted to completely tear down the engine .. at great expense to a 19 year old kid. I (thank God) said no as I couldn't afford it. A friend said the old Man down the road at the "Muffler Shop" might be able to help. We "chain/pipe towed" it down and he told me to come back after Lunch and it would be ready ... and it was ... for $30 !!! Seems that Cadillac's design Engineers elected to use a "double wall" exhaust construction method (Tube within a Tube) and when I hit the puddle, it caused the inner tube to "Bubble" up internally ... like a Banana in the Tail Pipe; enough to idle but with no flow, choked off at any higher RPMs. Never forgot that Old Man !!!

my wife brought her 2017 Macan S for its yearly oil change (3000 miles per year). They told her the “recommended” maintenance was for all new spark plugs (9112 miles total). When I asked how plugs wear out over time when not in use, the service manager admitted that they don’t, but they were required to tell all customers that. When warranty over, going to my local, honest mechanic. By the way, the “3 year” recommendation is for the Macan Turbo, not the S. He argued until I showed him the Owners manual. I hate Porsche dealerships, but it’s her money, not mine.
