- 'The Wizards Express' (1Z57) from Manchester Victoria to York hauled by GWR Hall Class 4-6-0 No 5972 Olton Hall [Hogwarts Castle] shown here arriving at Hellifield, taking water and departing on 12th July 2014.
Events after this departure led to the steam loco being put on the rear of the train and the supporting class 47 diesel No 47580 being put on the front due to line side fires between Hellifield and Leeds.
Still watching this in 2016, and what a fantastic trip behind 5972 that was despite the lineside fire.
Great video Allan and what a superb location is Hellifield. Olton Hall looked and sounded in great condition. I liked your close ups of the loco whilst taking on water and the departure was a study in how to control a steam loco with 10 on and 47580. What a lovely bark off the exhaust! You'll have me back down the S&C again soon with vids of this quality! Thanks, Ken
Thanks for your kind comments Ken and Hellifield station is a real gem on the line with that fine architecture which was pleasantly restored in the mid 90 after a look of dereliction beforehand. This station is just a few minutes south from Settle where we visited a while back, so it will be easily do-able for a future day trip. Regards - Allan.
Hi Allan, Sounded as if you had a few friends on the trip!! Cracking looking station and smashing close ups of the train. That's why I like water stops I think you get more value for money, although it's hard to argue against a train roaring through with whistle blasting off !! Nice rolling stock matching the engine in the sun and I should think you are well pleased with the finished article. Liked. Mike
Thanks very much Mike for your comments. Yes these water stops certainly give you more time and scope to get closer and different shots on your videos. I really enjoyed it here and its the first time I have stopped off here to film at this magnificent station. A nice café on the platform available too. The loco caused lineside fires soon after here unfortunately and had to be diesel hauled for the remainder of the tour. A good day all round however. Regards - Allan.
Lovely shots Allan,it really is a smart loco. Thanks John
Thanks very much John for your comments. It sure is a smart looking steam loco. Cheers - Allan.
Good video Allan. Not only good shots of the Hall ( Castle!) but also of the station. Cheers, Dave.
Thanks very much Dave. I have passed this station so many time it was nice to get a video at last as the architecture here is fantastic. A really nice setting. Regards - Allan.
Very nice video this Allan,Great close up shots of it getting water and a nice bit of wheel spin as it departs,Cheers....Trevor.''
Thanks very much for the comments Trevor. My very first visit here, although I have passed through many times. Its a lovely station so I wasn't disappointed. Cheers - Allan.
Magic shots Allan , shortly later at Otterburn she started a fire so things altered very fast with Network rail waving there wand .
Thanks for your comments Stephen. Such a shame about the problems after this departure. I really felt sorry for the passengers as I am sure the steam loco in this case was the prime attraction of the rail tour. Hopefully any steam ban isn't too lengthy and we get a nice mix of sunshine in rain to avoid problems. Cheers - Allan.
Very nice Allan..cheers Steve..
Thanks for watching/commenting Steve. Cheers - Allan.
Super video Allan, glad you got some clips before the problems started. Looks like a good location. Cheers, Jeff.
Thanks very much Jeff. Its an excellent location and the station architecture really adds to the atmosphere. Cheers - Allan.
Nice one Allan - Don't like the Hall in Red, but a fine piece of machinery on the rear.
Cheers, Bob.
Yes a good old class 47 to set the scene. It done a good job today on the rail tour Bob. Cheers - Allan.
Great video Allan, great close up shots of the loco, lovely looking station, great location, thanks for sharing, cheers...Bill
Thanks for your comments Bill.
Its a super station and very nicely restored after falling into dereliction a couple of decades ago. Regards - Allan.
there it is i have a new train the Magic Kingdom Express.
Good to here. Thank you for watching. Allan. 🙂
Another excellent posting. I was at Hellifield myself on one of my occasional visits
to Englandshire to catch this and the run of 60009. I must have been not far from
your location as I had a similar but further back viewpoint as the tour came in.
I decided not to post my shot as it was very similar to yours but much shorter.
Such a shame about later events and the ignominious end to her mainline career.
The continuing hot weather although nice will continue to play havoc for steam
hauled operations and my hay fever when I venture away from my coastal home.
Thanks very much for your comments. This was my first visit here to photo and video although I have been through the place many, many times. What a lovely railway station it is. I was very impressed. Hopefully we don't get a long period of diesel hailed rail tours as a result of this. Such a s shame for the passengers on board too. Regards - Allan.
allan5919 Thanks for the reply,
This was also my first visit here and it is a fine
building with expansive platforms allowing eveyone to get a viewpoint. Sadly the platforms and trackbeds are badly in need of
some TLC with regard to the vegetation to smarten the place up. It needs some group like the friends of the S&C to adopt the place
and return it to looking something like the major mainline station it is and not an
overgrown rural backwater. When you see the millions of pounds Network Rail has lavished
to improve facilies on stations further south,
it should surely not cost an arm and a leg to
keep the platforms and tracks weed free.
Good video of 5972
Thanks Andrew.
It done well has Olton Hall yes. Just unfortunate the line side fires shortened its time on tour duty today bugalugs661. Cheers - Allan.
Great video Allan!
Thanks very much. Cheers - Allan.
Great video Allan. I caught 60009 at Appleby on 'The Cumbrian Mountain Express' that day. I suppose now for 5972 its off to the
Warner Bros Museum. Cameron
Thanks Cameron for the comments. Hope you had a good day at Appleby.
Yes we will not see 5972 for at least 2 years now. Hopefully it still has a mainline future. Cheers - Allan.
I didn’t hear the whistle
❤
Thanks for watching. Cheers - Allan. :-)
That is a fair load for a Hall as well..Although Gods Wonderfuls can" haul" almost anything..Lol..!
Good video Allan.:-) Regards Ulli
Thanks very much for your comments Ulli......much appreciated. Allan.
Hi Allan, very good ,Shame about the landside fire..Dave
Thanks very much Dave. Think we will be having a spell with diesels on some tours as a result. Allan.
Hi Allan. spark arrester needed?. thanks for reply..Dave
Great video,we did the June trip, shame went on static display for so long, prefer to see in steam.
Thank you very much for watching. It's a super steam engine. It would be nice to see it steam once again after so long on display.
Cheers - Allan.
great video Allan, two lovely looking loco's. Good slow departure too, take it the driver was preventing wheel slip?
Thanks very much Tony. Yes I think he must be doing that on the departure clip. Cheers - Allan.
Nothing like an old bit of steam action! Why do they have to ruin the trains wiht diesels at the rear?
A like form me!
Thanks Matthew for your comments and for the 'like' :-) Cheers - Allan.
I think these passenger Cars would be looks good with an american Diesel locomotors like Alco pa , odissey Santa fe and steam locomotors for example up 844 unión pacífic
Now 844 would certainly draw the crowds in for sure. Many thanks for watching and commenting.
Regards - Allan. :-)
