    Cracking Day for Freight at Hellifield
    Despite the Rain!
    22 May 24
    A trip to Hellifield on what proved to be a very wet day! Thank goodness for the historic canopies and the 24H Cafe, museum and shop to keep me warm. All this after scorching weather only a couple of days before!
    [Correction]
    We have a Class 150 unit doing route learning trips from Clitheroe to Blea Moor and return in anticipation of a Saturdays only service from Rochdale via Manchester Victoria, Bolton, Blackburn and Hellifield to Ribblehead from the June timetable.
    We see the train of cement empties heading for Castle Cement at Clitheroe.
    The Gypsum empties from British Gypsum at Kirkby Thore returning to Teesport hauled by an appropriately named Class 66.
    We have a new traffic flow of aggregates from Carlisle to Dewsbury.
    There's 6K05 Engineer's train from Carlisle to Crewe Basford HAll
    The logs run for the first time this week from Carlisle to Chirk
    And finally the Weedkilling train from GBRf! Its second of three planned runs over the S&C.
    All this fitted between the passenger services on the Settle & Carlisle line and the Bentham line to Lancaster and Morecambe.
    The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.

    Love to hear a class 66 wind up from a stand. Glad you were able to keep dry and had refreshments to hand.😊

    The rain cascading of the canopy onto the logs. Splashing on the logs showed how wet it was. The cafe is worth a visit even with no trains.

    Hurrah for the canopies Les! Hellifield has the 'faded splendour' look about it, obviously very important in the past. It's a nice touch to see the 24H shed code on the raised bed too.

      It is a great place - just needs the old loco shed and it'd be 1880s again!

    Looks like you had a canny day of it Les. Lovely bit of variety there, particularly with the 150 on Yorkshire Dales Explorer route-learning duties. The blokes manning the weedkiller train have the best seats in the house.

      Thanks - was very lucky apart from there being nothing from Ribblehead or Arcow!

    I hope the canopy kept you dry Leslie. That was some collection of freights. Great stuff.

      It certainly did Tim. Thats why I chose that location (I'd considered Ribblehead but would have got soaked!)

      The joys of Hellifield include a warm cafe, a warm little mueum and a warm waiting room / book and curio shop!

    Another great video Les. A pity one of the busiest days for freight for a long time was also one of the wettest. Just one small error, the Rochdale to Ribblehead via Clitheroe and Hellifield is for the upcoming new timetable is not for a Sunday service but a Saturday service for two trains a day in each direction.

      My mistake! I knew it was two return workings and should have remembered they'll be Saturday workings. I;ll correct the description. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Amazing video Leslie the weed killer and cement was interesting, I’m not 100% sure but it looks like (From workings on RTT) that 20901 & 20905 will be passing Carlisle next week so that’s something quite interesting, again great vid!

    Hellifield looks like it was a really busy place back in the day. I've taken a look at it on Google maps satellite view and there is a circular area north of the station that suggests there may have been a turntable alongside 6 sidings that are no longer there. Once again some very interesting footage.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 місяці тому

      Hellifield had a 4-road shed and was base for the MR snow ploughs. In its final days it was used to store National Collection locos.

    (…cont) 17:55 A rare occasion of steam drifting from a diesel locomotive. Watching the 'Logs' go through, I pondered on the difference of quality in the product from Chirk with wet logs (like today) as opposed to dry logs (as of last week). 24:30 An indication of how bad the weather was. The platform had enough water to reflect the loco headlight. 25:30 So that's what a weed-killing train looks like. Just a shame it's never been seen within the bounds of Carlisle station. Thanks, Les; that was certainly a different experience.

      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 місяці тому

      Thanks! I did catch the weedkiller a year or two back one night at the station but I don't recall which video. I believe the pulping requires passing the timber through various liquids so no issue from rain.

    Superb video les ,l love going to Hellifield with the wife, the cafe is great, its a shame about the shed that's not use I think it belongs to WCR I think there was a problem with planning permission it' should have been a steam center anyway keep up the good work 👍.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 місяці тому

      The shed does belong to WCR. I'd heard from a former councillor there that it and a museum just never got finished, along with replacing the turntable etc.

    Very great work with the weather. In fact, the best shot was not a train, but the old switch handle/arm alone in the rain (or whatever it specifically was- imposing and brilliant image either way).

      It is a good spot although you have to check what trains are running. I didn't see any aggregates from either Ribblehead or Arcow. But I'm not complaining.The 37 section is good

    • @OscarTheTrainGuy
      @OscarTheTrainGuy 2 місяці тому

      @@LeslieGilpinRailways yeah, I guess it was just a lucky day because they were both scheduled through on that day. I thought the aggregate would come through, as they seem to go through Skipton towards Leeds every day, but very rarely weekend as I have seen it before. still, great catches

    I didn't realise that 24H was the engine shed code for Hellifield. I thought you were meaning an 24 hour cafe. Silly me. Clitheroe - Blackburn via Blea Moor? Long road for a shortcut, I thought. Just as well you explained that. 10:42 That guard (or is it conductor?) in his shorts must have thought it was summer. Wait, it IS Summer, it's raining! You have a good eye for B-roll material (11:35). 11:55 4 frames in colour negative. 12:45 Is this the train that used to go to Longport? 15:00 I presume the new driver came off the Leeds train. Therefore I also presume the off-duty driver used it to get back his depot in Carlisle. Somebody in HR had their brain in gear when that was decided. (cont…)

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 місяці тому

      How the heck did 11:55 happen? Its not on my original clips! I didn't mention the guy from the 150 collecting his hot lunch from the cafe! Thats why the chap in red waves as it enters.

    Hi Les, was the cafe named after a long gone shed number?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 місяці тому

      Hellifield had a 4-road shed! Its last use in the late 1960s was to hold preserved National Collection locos before they went to the old Clapham museum.
