Dan Marino getting 5k yards in 1984 is still crazy. Notable that the year *afterwards* was when the Bears had their star defense...

Coincidentally it was Dan Marino and the Dolphins who SCORCHED that mighty Bears Defense for 38 points on Monday Nite Football in 1985 (Marino threw 3 TD Passes). Otis Wilson, Wilbur Marshal, Dan Hampton, Steve McMichael, Gary Fencik, Dave Duerson, Richard Dent, Mike Singletary.............had no answer for Marino, Clayton, and Duper in '85. More Teams should have used those Dolphins Game Plan: PASS THE FOOTBALL! "Points come out of the Passing Game". Strong Passing Offenses will always out duel those "Defensive Minded" Teams because "Defensive Minded" Teams (like those '85 Bears) can't score enough points to "keep up" with a strong Passing Team.

2009 was a crazy year for QBs. You had Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, and Kurt Warner who were all active and well known at this point. Aaron Rodgers was starting to get well known. Nearly a quarter of all NFL teams had a future Hall of Fame (or likely HoF for those not in yet) QB starting for them with legit hopes of winning it all.
That's just the QBs that are either currently in or probably going into the HoF. Joe Flacco, Eli Manning, Donovan McNabb, Philip Rivers, and Matt Ryan were also active. Some of those guys had SB rings or starts at that point, others would get one later or at least make it to the game. All of them were legit contenders to at least go deep into the playoffs.
There are a bunch of pretty decent QBs I'm not mentioning that also played that year. This was a seriously stacked season for QBs. I don't know if any other season was this deep.

Not passing 55-60 times a game like Brees! Imagine if Marino had twice the attempts? And you couldn’t touch his receivers after 5 yards? Or hit him after he threw it? He was definitely a good numbers guy. If i want a guy whos gonna put up good stats? Hes the guy. But if need to win 1 game? Theres at least 10 guys I’m taking before him!

13/19 seasons he was selected for the Pro Bowl
When he retired he was the all time passing yards leader, he was 2nd in touchdown passes, 2nd in completion percentage (first if you exclude Deshaun Watson's smaller sample size), tied for 1st in touchdowns in one game, most seasons leading the league in passing yards, amongst other accolades.

For comparison, Brady led 13 such offenses in his career, and Peyton led 12.

Some aren't going to like it, and I don't care if they do, but Patrick Mahomes has an argument for his 2022 season being the greatest for a quarterback in NFL history. 5,250 yards and 41 TD passes, leading the league in both, 105.2 passer rating, only .3 behind the league leader, broke the record for total yards in a season for a qb with 5,614, won league MVP, became the first quarterback to lead the league in yards and touchdowns and win league MVP to win the Super Bowl in the same year, and won Super Bowl MVP.

@@D-Lo23The best argument for an MVP is 2009 in my opinion.
In retrospect though, the teams Brees was on weren’t very good defensively when he was more in his prime.
2018 was probably his best chance to win a second title (defense was 14th that year; better than some of the years before it), and that team might’ve been more well rounded than 09 even, but the no call happened in the NFC Championship Game of course.

@@fortynights1513 I have to say, you are correct. In my opinion though I feel that the fact that he was on below average teams and yet was still able to surpass 5000 yards numerous times and lead the league in passing on numerous occasions should have been enough, but sadly it was not. Quite unfortunate.

    • @fortynights1513

@@D-Lo23People say defense wins championships or offense wins championships.
I say well roundedness and execution win championships.
In Brees’ case, he was the quarterback for seven or eight different top five offenses, but three or four of them were paired with defenses that weren’t even top 20.
He executed, but his team was not exactly well rounded.
