The closest one was the 1990 49ers. If Roger Craig doesn't fumble that ball, the 49ers most likely get that one more first down to ice the clock away. For the 90's Cowboys, if Jerry's ego didn't get the better of him, Jimmy's Cowboys don't go down 21-0 to the 49ers in the 1994 NFC Championship after 3 possessions. Jimmy has that team ready. The 70's Steelers, even if Franco and Rocky were hurt, the Raiders on that day were a better team.

At 11:12, the quote about the 49ers becoming the first team with back-to-back 14-win seasons is a bit misleading. The '85 & '86 Bears went 15-1 and 14-2... per wiki, "In going 14-2 (in 1986), the Chicago Bears were the first team in NFL history to have consecutive seasons with 14 or more victories." So the 49ers were the first team to win "exactly" 14 games in b2b seasons.
Leonard Marshall's hit on Montana, while devastating (he literally rode his body down to the ground, flattened him and fracturing his sternum, while twisting his hand giving him a spiral fracture) it didn't knock him out for the subsequent two seasons. Montana's notoriously bad elbow did that. I love that Montana still holds a tiny grudge against the Niners for moving on. In an interview he related a story where DeBartolo (or Carmen Policy?) said it all worked out because they got another SB win with Steve Young and Montana responded that they would've gotten a FEW more if they kept him! After years of healing, it seems clear that the '92 & '93 Niners simply didn't have enough of a running game or pass defense to beat those Cowboys, but it would've been interesting to see what a wily veteran Montana might've come up with.
Well I can understand Montana's bitterness. But at the same time he missed a complete season, and was a big risk health-wise. it was a cold-blooded move, but it ultimately proved to be the right one. And really who knows how well Montana plays if he stayed a 49er, or if he would ever win again. What we do know is that the 49ers got 8 more years of HOF QB play, and another SB win. Pretty good trade considering the alternative pitfalls.
@astrostar49 To be fair, Young could have won several Superbowls if they kept the roster intact. Instead, we lost players left and right. By the time around 1996 to 1998 Niners were shadow of former self. For example, that playoff game against the Falcons,; if we prepared a depth of good running backs that season we probably were not one dimensional against them and possibly advanced to the Superbowl that year.
@@CaptainAmerica2k7 Young played largely in the salary cap era. 49ers couldn't keep everyone like they could in the 80s. Still, they were able to keep most of their key pieces. Just came up short a few times.
@@CaptainAmerica2k7If you mean 98, I don’t think the Niners are beating Minnesota in the next round. Their defense was pretty average that year; far worse than Atlanta, and it’d face one of the best offenses there is. The Niners had a better offense than Atlanta arguably, but not by as big a margin.
Montana wouldn't have made a difference in either 1992 or 1993. Young was magnificent both years, but like you mentioned, the lack of a pass D (specifically a pass rush) greatly hindered their ability to thwart the balanced attack of the 'Boys. Dallas probably had the most balanced team of all the dynastic Super Bowl winners throughout history.
Wont be listed here but the 2016-2018 Pats were the actual closest to a 3-peat since they made the Superbowl 3 straight seasons but lost the middle one to the Eagles.

That ‘94 team was even better than the 90s Super Bowl teams. The Niners just played better that day in the NFC title game. The Boys got down early and could never dig out. Niners had a really good team in 1994 and could’ve repeated in 1995 as well if Steve Young didn’t get hurt. But if we are playing hypotheticals, if Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones got along, maybe Dallas fourpeats regardless.
@@aloominknottyheadtap900 Yes, Troy loved Jimmy, and after Jimmy left, Troy said the team’s discipline started to slip with each passing year. I still think from talent standpoint, it was the best. This is why the Buffalo Bills of the 90s were so remarkable. There are five reasons Super Bowl three-peats have never happened: Head-coaching changes, QB changes, coordinator changes, star injuries and age. Do any of those apply to the Chiefs? Nope. I'm not a KC fan but if there's any team in the history NFL that can pull a three-peat, I'd have to say it's this Chiefs team right now

The 3 teams who had the best chance to 3peat were the '76 Steelers, the '90 49ers, and the '94 Cowboys.
Facts
The closest one was the 1990 49ers. If Roger Craig doesn't fumble that ball, the 49ers most likely get that one more first down to ice the clock away. For the 90's Cowboys, if Jerry's ego didn't get the better of him, Jimmy's Cowboys don't go down 21-0 to the 49ers in the 1994 NFC Championship after 3 possessions. Jimmy has that team ready. The 70's Steelers, even if Franco and Rocky were hurt, the Raiders on that day were a better team.
I agree with that last part about Steelers Raiders since the Raiders were a monster team that season and nothing was gonna stop them, not even one of the greatest defenses of all time

At 11:12, the quote about the 49ers becoming the first team with back-to-back 14-win seasons is a bit misleading.
The '85 & '86 Bears went 15-1 and 14-2... per wiki, "In going 14-2 (in 1986), the Chicago Bears were the first team in NFL history to have consecutive seasons with 14 or more victories."
So the 49ers were the first team to win "exactly" 14 games in b2b seasons.
The pats lost the second super bowl which means the third super bowl didn’t mean anything so they wasn’t the closest to achieving a three peat the 1990 49ers then the 1994 cowboys was
That ‘94 team was even better than the 90s Super Bowl teams. The Niners just played better that day in the NFC title game. The Boys got down early and could never dig out. It’s interesting that both Troy and Michael mentioned that ‘94 NFC championship game in their HOF speeches. That game showed their grit, toughness and heart. 💙
Airman also admitted they weren't as good in 94 as they were previously. The 92 and 93 Cowboys were all time great teams.

Also, even if they’d lose (and they more than likely would have), the AFL teams they would have played would get more recognition for being early Super Bowl teams.
