    Funny story about Johnny Football. He was supposed to speak at an event last week for a group of A&M alums at a fundraiser event in Corpus Christi and he totally blew it off. Stunned Rashaan Salaam wasn't on the list. He was an absolute monster for Colorado in 1994, running away with over 2000 yards and the Heisman Trophy that year. He was drafted by the Bears the following year, but the workload from his time at CU (and playing almost all his games on artifical concrete...er turf) led to injuries and he only stayed in the league for two years (I think). Rest in peace.

    Jason White went undrafted due to injuries. He missed two years due to knee issues and got a sixth year of eligibility after winning the Heisman due to medical hardship. Though the Titans signed him as a free agent, White retired to avoid further knee injuries.

    • @gmb858
      @gmb858 11 місяців тому +7

      Kansas City also gave Jason a workout as a courtesy to see if there was potential, but his knees did not give him the mobility he would need to withstand the rigors of the NFL. He can't be categorized with the worst Heisman, that should go to Johnny "Football." Jason was and remains a leader in his home town and a credit to the Oklahoma Sooners.

    Gino Toretta won the Heisman in '92, Marshall Faulk was clearly the best player, but played at San Diego State, same in '00, Tomlinson was the best player, but Florida State the powerhouse, and TCU the "small school"

    • @j.menapace625
      @j.menapace625 11 місяців тому +3

      Agreed and this deserves more elaboration. Miami in the 90s was what 'Bama is today and Torretta was an example of giving the Heisman by default to the quarterback of the best team in the nation. Other players like Marshall Faulk, Charlie Ward, and even Drew Bledsoe were all better candidates for the trophy than Torretta, but the media had such a hard-on for the Hurricanes that they basically dictated the result without regard to the players' merits.

    • @marcusking332
      @marcusking332 5 місяців тому

      San Diego State also played very weak competition in both of those seasons of Faulk's and stats were padded via playing really weak teams. Not to mention that SDSU finished 6-6 in 93 with Faulk and losing 4 straight, and in 92 they finished 5-5-1 including Miami blowing out SDSU 63-17 and completely shutting down Faulk.
      Tomlinson & TCU played in a very weak conference with a weak schedule as well, so wouldn't of been right to have given the Heisman to Tomlinson when his performances were against weak teams. As that did nothing to prove his Heisman worthiness.

  • @miknak5254
    @miknak5254 11 місяців тому +10

    Success in college football depends on the system in which the quarterbacks play in. There are many gimmicky offenses there. The NFL is a whole different ball game. Stats in college can be other-worldly, and many fans and some owners become enamored with some Heisman winning college QBs. The NFL-ready QBs are not always crazy successful, statistically in college, while just about every Heisman winning QBs are.

    Berwanger becoming a foam rubber salesman is important, conceptually
    It was out of foam rubber that NFL kicker Fred Cox developed his invention: the Nerf Football, which would go on to spark countless careers via young kids having a ball they could play with!
    Also interesting to note, the Browns retired #44 in memory of Ernie Davis before the season began, becoming one of two players in NFL history to have a team retire their number without ever playing a single down; the other was the similarly tragic case of Stone Johnson, a Chiefs signee who suffered a spine injury in a preseason game that would lead to his death

    All I’m gonna say is that out of all the Earl Campbell highlights I’ve seen, 7:10 is the nastiest.
    That is just disrespect on a level not often seen in this game 😂

      There’s a universe where the Chiefs take Ward in the first round and let him sit a year under Joe Montana. Quite the “what if.”

    What about (bust) Andre Ware from University of Houston? Drafted by the Lions in 1990, never really seemed to get a consistent chance, then out of the league after 3-4 seasons.

      I think the NCCAF and Heisman Trust finally heard all of the non-stop, incessecant complaints and gave Bush back his Heisman, a trophy he never should've been stripped of in the first place because what he was accused and USC was found guilty of in 2010 is now commonplace and legal with the NIL contracts with college superstars, most notably Caleb Williams.
