I don't get people bitching about Laughing Matter, it's a damn fine work with a great range of sound and themes and plenty of psychedelic edge. I feel like most of the disappointment I've heard comes from people who are very into Ganglion Reef and Golem which are amazing records but I feel like if Wand didn't push out of the doomy heavy-psych box we'd be getting a lot of the same. I'm happy to see them grow and evolve, seeing them in Denver for their Laughing Matter tour was one of the most unique and incredible live shows I've ever been too.
Usually just the agro, masculine touting bros who "like their harder stuff".. but i agree. This newest record is truly something special. Still heavy psych elements in it too! That fucking solo at the end of Airplane? Like holy fuck.
Cory hope you're reading this!! U A BOSS
It's the same people who would have got upset at Bob Dylan going electric or David Bowie's many persona shifts. Some people don't understand the idea of artistic growth.
Nah its just to me, they leaned in an awkward position of psych rock. Like...to me its like they didnt lean in all they way, so it comes off as just okay. But I with a few more listens I'll be able to like it.
EDIT, about a year later: Nah. Laughing Matter is so...boring and even after multiple listens I just can do it. Scarecrow and Wonder are the only real highlights of this album.
wow. So if someone doesn't share your taste he can't have any idea of artistic growth... very unartistic analysis and/or statement and what a bullshit man. You could and should write in music press for sure
I don't get what what you don't get? People got into wand bacause of their heavy psychedelic doom sound. You don't get why so many wouldn't be into this more atherial stuff?
This band is incredible, it's insane how they aren't bigger.
0:19 Wonder
7:25 Thin Air
13:09 Interview
17:30 Scarecrow
24:20 Airplane
i've lived through the early 80's and 90's, which some people talk about as a great period for alternative music, but it really does seem like a great time for music now, when there's bands like this. Sadly people who moan a lot about the state of music today, are being drawn away from the present moment.
I couldn't agree more. There are tons of great new bands out there, you just need to have the curiosity and interest to discover them.
Definitely. People who do that moaning are people who either are too lazy to dig for the good stuff or people from older eras idolising the past. We're in a great musical age currently with some exceptional bands out there.
@@mhbackman yeah, older guys used to do that in the 90's when i was younger, but sometimes we were guilty of looking back to the 60's and say how great it must have been, and a much better time for music than the time we were living in. If you want to get the most out of something, you have to try and live in the present, but i do also think the 60's had some of my favourite music.
i lived through the early 80's and 90's as well, and totally agree, there is such great music being made today. it's so much easier to record it and so much easier to hear it. but still hard to make a living at it.
I am in my 40s and am very thankful for all these great young bands now, I feel like music now is better than it has been in 40 years.
they seem like one of the only bands I know that all band members seem to have equal input to songwriting and performance and i really enjoy that about them
I really dig them, but I still believe it's mainly Cory's input
@@goozerboozer8543 it's definitely been very "democratic" from Plum and onwards. Cory brings most of the lyrics, but the music is almost entirely formed from improv sessions
edit: looking back, i wrote this comment very confidently as if i was there when they made the songs - i should clarify that this is just what i've gathered from several interviews & the band dynamic in general, but ofc i could be off the mark
Wand + KEXP = I clicked this so fast. Although sad to not see Cheryl gushing over them for a third time!
Marcus Backman my thoughts exactly
Yeah - Evie has some way to go to match Cheryl
Great drummer!
Check out his other band Behavior
@@youcallthatascoff i knew i had seen him before! They opened for guerilla toss in seattle! Honestly i watched him for most of the set because he moves his arms so loosely and wildly it's distracting
@@BustaShenanigans he was also in this band from Chicago about ten years ago called Caw! Caw! and they were great too. He is always captivating.
He's a corner stone in this band imo. Had the chance to meet him a couple of times
@@youcallthatascoff thanks for the shout out. I was in caw caw. so happy for Evan and what he is accomplishing!
First time I've really given Wand a good go and this sounds gooooood
listen to plum!
The title track on Perfume still gives me chills when it breaks into the jam towards the end. They're a great band.
Check out their other kexp performances. Them playing fire on the mountain got me into them. (Not a Dead cover haha). The end of that song is perfect.
Listen to sleepy dog. You will literally thank me with tears.
@@joebowles06 bro I jam perfume so fucking hard. It's dangerous how hard I thrash to that song. Im gonna get in a wreck
Wand is awesome @kexp should make sure to invite them whenever they are in town.
Saw them last night for the first time...truly a mind-blowing experience. Really overwhelming musically and visually, I could not believe it.
I come back to this for the solo at the end of Airplane.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhmfg. What a beautiful chill powerful intense wonderful experience.
Thank you god. And the Algorithm. This introduction was long overdue.
Drummer is fire!
it is my " night of discovery"...that's right I'm new to this...what an incredible band! pink floyd meets beechwood sparks....fantastic!
Opening for Stereolab on the new tour got me here.
So glad.
el grupo favorito de tu grupo favorito
what a good band. wow.
Wish I could get these live wand performances pressed to vinyl, these sessions are always fuckin on point
Tell me about it, would kill to have Cory's Zebulon acoustic performance
Been waiting so long for this.... only on 2nd track at time of writing, cant wait to hear the live version of scarecrow

I love how the set was so perfectly executed! it really finished strong with airplane wow! so unbelievably talented and under rated.
Love them, really cool guys :) was blown away when I saw them perform here in Switzerland
One of the best albums of the year so far.
I just saw them last week at Nrmal festival in Mexico City and they blew me away.
Fantastic set. I'm seeing them live again in Glasgow on Saturday, can't wait. They are one of the best live bands I've seen, and I've been going to gigs for 40 years.
best band
My favorite band
Fawk yeah gimme some Wand r somethin! Miss the super heavy psych a bit but this Laughing Matter stuff is groovy too.
I have seen them live in Annecy France, this year, it's a really great and cool band! thank you so much for those exellent songs and performance.......
Awesome band! What a 70s SG too!
Mint condish
I saw them live in Mexico City after hearing all their albums for a while, but man! Live they are such a powerful and unique experience. I'm so freaking happy I got to see them
I love Wand!
airplane is basically everyone plays serenely as cory fuckin shreds on his guitar
been wit it since the very beginning always much love thanks for keeping me above ground
Liked the questions, Wand is always amazing obviously
Outstanding performance!
Can’t wait to see them at Desert Daze ♥️
Such a mesmerizing treat! Thanks KEXP and Wand.
Really helpful interviewees
I always mix up Wand and Pond
LIke 'em both. There is a Pond video at Prima Vera where the into music is Melted Rope!
Phenomenal band!
That guy plays guitar like I do. Cept I don't have a bow. Or any talent. Or a band. Or a home. Or a guitar.
do you offer private lessons?
Fed Put hahaha seriously
really awesome band.
Demaaaaaaaais
pHENOMENAL!
Tambourines and shakers are undervalued in live performances...
Bruh laughing matter is brilliant idk what everyone is bitching about. I like golem and ganglion reef all the same, but this record is such an evolution
Facts guy
Laughing Matter was boring as shit lmao
This is rad!
now THAT is what i call shredding a guitar whew
Holy shit this band has three performances just on KEXP
Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull
34:00 SOFIA HAS SUCH A CUTE SMILE AHHHH
I want that tambourine gig
Find awesome band > check if they've got a session on KEXP > find session > rejoice
"Yeah, that's real fine expensive vintage gear you brought out here, Mr. Wand. 'Course I don't know what that bastard shark's gonna do with it, might eat it I suppose. Seen one eat a ’59 Fender Twin one time. Hey chieffy, next time you just ask me which amp to bring, right? "
(haha! those beautiful Boogie amps & guitars & a Roland Space Echo, i just had to,
you guys are putting them to very good use though! ;)
Like Radiohead back in the day
It's creepy how much he sounds like a young Thom Yorke
Only difference is that wand is good
I just wanna know where Cory got his sick duster from
I think he's still got it from his time with Ty and the Muggers, see that KEXP show for reference
Ya'll really cast a spell with this one, I tell ya hwat
Nathan Grant that's what wands do :)
Saw them in montreal... When i got to the venu I was taken by how it wasn't a theatre. They played to like 50 people. Wtf! I was like where the fuck is Oh Sees crowd and all these people?
Stephen Malkmus brought me here.
Hartzel the slave
There’s that drummer again. What’s his name?
Tom Yorke on drums
Early) Radiohead called...that 13 yr old drummer is On It!😄👍🤟🏾
what band did they mention they're listening to? Emdu Maktar?
Mdou Moctar
Gotta say that Wands new stuff is really good, but there earlier stuff is much better at least in my opinion.
Yeah. I saw them touring on this album. Wanted to leave almost the whole time, I was actually bored - and they seemed to be too. Best part was when they played a couple old songs for the encore and the place lit up for like 10 minutes....
Frank Vazquez yeah... I wanna see them when the open for Stereolab in Seattle. Just worried that that will happen. I do really like their new album it’s just they had something so much better before. Hopefully someday they’ll go back to their good old selves
2018 or 19?
nice beholder tattoo

I come back to this video when I want to hear Airplane and am stoned but dude why are none a the comments about the tension between Cory and the annoying kexp host. Dude. They wanted to talk to Cheryl. You probably said some other dumb SHIT before tapes were rolling and YOU started the metaCOMMENTARY asking if they listened to a lot of SILENCE in THE VAN before he CORRECTED YOU and told you what it REALLY WAS. That you AREN'T CHERYL. GOT it ? ::laughing whike I was writing this hey enjoy this set it's so good::
ASMR DJs.
That Radio host was so cringy 🤐
Amazing. KROC... I mean KEXP?
Come on.
Такая музыка шикарная и такой невнятный вокал...
Cory's sounding a little bit out of breath, maybe he was tired or something
KIDS AND MY CHILD SAID ITS TO MUCH CUSSING
I I said that guys not my mom I did
Is this even the same band? It's like straight up indie rock now instead of heavy psych.
What are you on dude
This is a band growing and pushing their sound. How boring it would be for them to continue that psych-rock sound which they really mastered on those first three albums. Plum was the beginning of huge change (Blue Cloud in particular), and Laughing Matter pushes that even further. It's beautiful.
Imagine being this close-minded.
Ye bro they are like a shittier Nirvana now, wtf. #makewandgreatagain #slownlow #heavyorgtfo
@@thirdeyelandslide_ I mean...hes kind of right. I love me some Psych Rock but this is just boring besides songs like Wonder. I loved Plum, but this just feels like the most average psych album. I really wanted the album to really lean into the songs in a direction like Scarecrow.
Laughing chatter
meep...
i discovered this band when they opened for Ty Segall around 2015 and loved their first handful of albums, but i just can’t get into anything they’ve done starting with Plum. it’s... boring
a bit too poppy for me but still a great band
shaunone 😂😂😂
How insightful and constructive!
Can't hear him because too many band players drown out the song???
Yeah the music is way too busy
what are you talking about?
Hmmm dunno about all this psych revivalism and falsettos...just give me ICEAGE
Joyless players - cliche guitar licks - all been done before by better players - highly derivative band - Pink Floyd they are not.
Joyless listener - cliche review - been said before by better reviewers - highly derivative take - Pitchfork you are not
