1:13 in the video is an IS-2 with a stepped slope. As others point out, the later production variants also had the fully sloped front. I don't say that infantry riding on the tank is a bad idea. I say that infantry riding on the tank when the TC is no longer able to communicate directly with the infantry because he's inside the turret is a bad idea, as it implies there is lots of hot metal flying around.
1) There are plenty of reasons for a fender to be 'sprung' to stay in place. What is unusual about IS-4 is that the spring system is more in-depth than the typical single bar. 2) No change. If the area is not so hot that the infantry are not at inordinate risk by staying in the tank, the TC can probably keep his hatch open and his head out.
Soviet tank forces went through incredibly painful learning process in WWII. One of the lessons learned was that tanks needed infantry, artillery, and air support in combat. In the time before IFV's, infantry simply rode into combat on top of the tanks and then filed in behind tanks. Its an easy solution that helped them develop new combined arms doctrine.
I was told that the IS-2 with the stepped front was actually called the IS-122 and the one with the completely sloped frontal plate was the full production variant which was called the IS-2.
I have one question,....why is there a 'violence' warning on this video? Is Mr. Moran gonna bust out his ninja moves and go postal on us? Or is it just not PC to look at tanks,...in a museum? Really?!?
Anything military, gun, tank or anything like that gets ad issues since UA-cam don't like premoting military stuff, or guns or things that don't fit their agenda

this museum is open for everyone. ticket is something like 3$. There are hangars with german tanks, soviet and Usa/Britan tanks. Museum is really big and interesting to see. More of it, there are special days when tanks are going out of hangars.
