Nicholas Moran continues his tour of the most interesting military vehicles. This time, he examines the famous Soviet ISU-152 tank destroyer. How does it differ from the SU-152? What's common between the ISU-152 and some German vehicles? And why should the external fuel tanks not be considered a weakness? You will find answers to these questions and more in the new episode of "Inside the Chieftain's Hatch". Let's watch!

yeah wait until you get the BL-10, it's not called the Troll Cannon for nothing.
He makes commission.
"If you wish to remove half a city block that offended you..."
dont do it
it seems to be the su-152, not the isu-152... or I made a mistake?
The ISU-152 is also useful to take the family out for a nice city tour. Also. No parking problems. You can create a nice parkingspace with the 152 gun which is included in the 'outdoor' package. When upgraded to the 'executioner' package, you get hull colored lightingbezels and complementary log to go. /s
WOT XD
The isu-152......for when you really have to kill that spider
yup. And all of its friends.
And it's house, and it's other relatives
Might as well genocide them
I'm sorry

I was going to comment the same thing but see you got here first. I enjoyed the video overall but good god that music was annoying.
I've watched several of these vid's and I've figured out how to deal with it. I've pulled out my guitar and I'm going to learn the lick so I can play it whenever I want
Once again if the music didn't repeat over and over and over again, these would be much better.

Sounds like porn movie music to me, so you can understand how annoying it is.

"What size gun do you want?"
Well, what are we putting on light cruisers these days?

Much longer barrels and larger powder charges on the naval ones, mind
Still can't match cruiser guns even though the caliber is equivalent to a light cruiser.

The armor on the back of the fighting compartment of this assault gun is actually thicker than the deck armor on the IJN Kongo. A thundering beast indeed.
"If you need to remove a building, or half a city block." LOL
Why bother to fight snipers of you can "remove" the building they use to hide though
Alpha Adhito True. Towards the end of the war with the US and Soviet economies cranked up they could afford to fire artillery rounds at individuals while the Germans had to conserve theirs.
you forgot the part where he says " that offended you "
Chieftain cited somewhere a German colonel defending Aachen: "when the Americans start to use the 155mm as sniper, it's time to surrender"
In Aachen, SPGs went right in line with the riflemen to remove entire building offending them.
Too bad it can't remove that horrid music
I'd like to see a game that puts you in the shoes of a tank crew going through a theatre of war, meaning you gotta take care of the tank (to a certain extent), sleep, etc
This is an excellent series and you are a great presenter, i love that you take your time and show off the little things around these vehicles.
9:05 The Mythbusters tested whether or not you could set off a barrel of gasoline by shooting at it once. No matter what they shot the barrels with the barrels would not explode. Normal rounds, incendiary rounds, FMJ rounds, nothing happened. The only thing I can think of that would cause a barrel of fuel to explode with a tank round is that it's an incendiary shell that somehow slows down enough on impact to still be in the cloud of vaporized fuel and thus ignite the fuel cloud and cause a thermobaric explosion.
The tank also has tanks of diesel which is even harder to ignite.
Thred assasin Just to be picky, diesel ENGINES use pressure to heat the fuel/air mixture to ignition temperatures. Diesel will still burn if you light it on fire.
Dan Wier Okay then. Show the evidence. Back up your statement with examples of exposed fuel tanks/barrels being hit by gun fire catching on fire or exploding.
Well he didnt say explode its more of a leak or something that causes it to ignite and catch fire not explode
theres a formula for that for the perfect explosion for gasoline you need 14.7 parts of air and 1 part of gasoline
i dont know what it is for diesel
I feel a bit inadequate looking at that gun..

The drivers fuel tank. Full of vodka to keep the driver lubricated.
Haha, British tanks need their tea heaters, Russian tanks need their vodka storage.
Plot twist, all of the fuel tanks are full of vodka. Russian Tanks are fueled by vodka.
Ima Popo That would be awesome, and it is possible to run gasoline engines on alcohol. The only problem you would have would be the crew drinking too much of the fuel.
Jesse Sisolack
The Russians were also known for using pure grain alcohol as brake fluid in their fighters such as the Foxbat.
Jack McCrary
but they used it only on very few high-speed planes, like mentioned mig-25. It was because of heat generated by speed of plane, so normal fluid didnt worked.
dont swamp tht with thing that russiians (mainly on more modern tanks) used bread to filter normal brake fluid and then drinked it :).
the music is just painful.. please upload again without it because otherwise this is a very solid video

I was in one of the ISU-152 back in Beijing, they had a tank museum on the outskirts of the city. Very poorly maintained... I was brought there by a PLA army Captain, he outranked pretty much everybody there, so we were free to go into vehicles. They got some interesting stuffs, there was a Stuart parking on the side, al the internals were gone, there was a wood stick in the main gun...
I agree with the comments about the annoying music. Please fire whoever thought it was a good idea to include it.
I don't like the music, leave whoever chose it jobless because my needs are more important than a individuals liveliness.

I'll be waiting for the second part of this tank!!
German tanks did not have those cold weather starting systems, so setting fires under tanks to help get them going on the Eastern Front was common. It is a good advantage to have there in your AFVs.
And those external tanks are diesel, like the T-34, so they are much less flammable and explosive than gasoline. I can see external tanks being a danger for a gasoline engined tank, since a mostly empty tank could explode (although it won't necessarily damage the tank too much), but diesel fuel is not explosive. It can be ignited, but nothing like as easily as gasoline. The only thing I'd worry about is the tank bursting and spreading flaming fuel all over the engine deck, down through the air vents, etc. But it would take a lucky sort of hit to both burst the tank and ignite the fuel. Most rounds and fragments will just perforate it and let it leak out. And like you say, they probably mostly use those for transit, not in battle. I guess they figured the definite advantages outweighed the small potential risk. And since you didn't have T-34s and ISUs burning themselves up all over the battlefield because an incendiary MG round struck it, it must have worked.
After watching the T-34 video, the ISU-152 has a lot of nice features...
Braeden Hamson
Well, this vechicle wasn't rushed into production like the T-34 and 34-85 - so engineers had enough time to make the thing better.
***** T-34 wasn't rushed into production
DarkManLT
While it wasn't rushed as much as the -85 was, it was put into production while there were still numerous design issues with it.
For example the original cast turret was both hard and costly to manufacture, and restricted inside space considerably. Most vechicles weren't outfitted with a radio, leading to severe losses due to lack of communication (waving flags around in the middle of a fight is not exactly reliable). The original gun was underperforming and had to be changed out.
_"For example the original cast turret was both hard and costly to manufacture, and restricted inside space considerably."_
They changed it for the"Gaika" turret.
_"Most vechicles weren't outfitted with a radio, leading to severe losses due to lack of communication (waving flags around in the middle of a fight is not exactly reliable)."_
Which was still common in many armies at the outbreak of the war. In the Soviet Union, the parts needed to make radio were rare so this wasn't a T-34 problem.
_"The original gun was underperforming and had to be changed out."_
Again, this was not unique to the T-34. The KV-1 used the same gun. But in 1941 and 1942, the 76.2 gun was quite adequate. In fact, in 1941, it was one of the most powerful tank guns in the world. Many other tanks had their guns upgraded, like the PzKpfw III, StuG III and the PzKpfw IV.
Braeden Hamson I
you know im sorta impressed by what hes saying. despite the fact that the tanks may not last that long on the battlefield, the Russian tanks were actually very well designed... and the way they were designed for ease of maintenance really reflects that. you look at the german tanks and you just don't really see that. and the forethought of using a diesel engine, and the primitive equivalent of glow plugs for cold starts is very interesting. all the little design perks here and there show this tank was built to last... more so then most
This is a bit of a meme that has been going on for several decades. Everything Russian is crude, cheap, simple and always reliable. Everything German is complex, high quality, expensive and high tech. In reality, it wasn´t so much like that. There were complex or unreliable Russian machines (for example, the T-34 experienced a very high loss rate due to unreliability for a significant part of WWII) and there were very simple, cheap and effective German designs (the StuG III or the MG 42 to name a couple)
Also, during WWII Diesel engines are not an automatic winner over petrol engines. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. It is not a black/white issue.
i really enjoyed how technical he got. Kinda reminds me of the way Jay Leno talks about his cars.
Who else has normal hearing and finds the video perfectly enjoyable and informative even with the music?
Me
Sir Chieftain, I am a dedicated fan and I think you should write a book perhaps on how useful the manuals were in combat - a great segue into describing that state of affairs. I see too that you are cited in Staven Zaloga's "Armored Champion: The Top Tanks of World War II".
Other Nations: oh no our tank get stucked in mud, we need other heavy veichle to help it to get out of the mud!
Soviets: LOG
Odd that this video is flagged as 'Mild violence' I understand they like being safe but what's violent about the chieftain... or a hunk of metal O.o
They are scared that babies in armored vehicles will take over
Is about the music, it give you ideeas
Well, that chunk of metal can destroy your house in a blow, but the “mild violence” is unnecessary.
You’re hiding the truth. SHOW ME THE STALINIUM REACTOR!
That tank could create a whole crate of a lake after a shot. The 88mm cannon is the best part
I love the idea that some bureaucrat thought this monster needed a dainty little horn bolted to the front. A Health & Safety addition in the event that anyone should fail to notice the ground shaking and the hellish roaring and clanking as it rumbled over the horizon toward them?
goddammit i used to think that tanks had logs on the side for when the tankers needed to camp out and needed to make a campfire when they were out of base *facepalm*
+elliot boyd (XtremeAssasin99) same here looool
elliot boyd who said you couldn't do that
@@raiben4437 the general!
Love the log; straight off of a Mk IV tank from 1917. Same exact concept. In fact, the Mk IV has this machine beat as far as the log/unditching beam goes. The rails on top of the Mk IV allows the beam to be loosely chained to the track while sitting in place on top of the vehicle. Then the tracks turn, and drag the beam forward along the rails, then down under the tank. You drive forward, now unstuck, and the chains pick the beam right up out of the mud, and drag it back along the rails to the original location. You stop, unchain it, and drive away. The only drawback is if you are under fire, since you have to get out to attach the chains. But that's true of the ISU as well. And if you can imagine a tank so stuck in a morass that a single pass under the track won't get it out, you can just keep the beam traveling around the track, over the rails and under the tank again as long as you want, until the tank comes out on solid ground (or you give up or it breaks down). Clever system, especially in the Mk V where they put a little cupola and hatch in the roof so you could attach the chains without exiting the vehicle.
152mm of love
Nasty piece of work. That log is an old farmer’s trick to unstuck a tractor very effective.
Gunner of an ISU 152 meets a M4 Sherman gunner after the war. "That's not a gun this is a gun!" The commander migrated to Australia and became a crocodile hunter. He never forgot that line when he had a break in New York.
I love how he causally describes it as though it's the features of a house lol
Monster. Love it
There is something to be said about soviet engineering showing us when we don't need to complicate things. It's very simple, but it works. Exactly what you want for combat.
The ISU-152 is really nice!
The "log" solution to a common issue is brilliant
The idea was not exactly new though… "fascines" (bundles of sticks for easier traversal of uneven or wet ground) have been used at least in the 18th century and some of the first tanks in WW1 carried them.
Good, but the background music is distracting and drove me away before the end.

We all know that the most significant part of the ISU-152 is the log

The ISU-152 was capable of destroying a German Elefant tank destroyer or a pesky building as well, heavy formidable monster!
What a beast !
Fantastic, incredibly interesting! Thank You!!!
Before now I guess I didn’t have a good comprehension of how big the gun mantlet is, thing’s huge
When you try to do a presentation on a tank during a rock concert.
Just a point to note. The engine is the V2-IS, not B2. B is Cyrillic for V.
Letters sound too similar and the subtitles say V-2IS. Soo him having said B2-IS is false.
if it gets hit or breaks down in combat and the crew has to get out in cold weather the burning fuel on the outside makes sure they stay warm and everyone can see them and pick them up. this too is a cold environment operating design.
this absolute MONSTER of a gun would easily knock out the unsuspecting German Tiger

I never heard of the log with tanks. The closest thing I heard was some guys trying the same thing with a tractor and tearing off the fenders.
Very effective gun, against pretty much anything, although it would be better with a larger bottom, and with the gun above the engine compartment... I think it was nose heavy, and that gun mount is pretty iffy, although with a gyroscope and modern hydraulics, could be cool

No BL-10 wtf. I want an upgrade!
It should be called the nut-cracker, because its 152mm shell could bust Tigers and Panthers without breaking a sweat. At the least ring their armor like a bell, killing their crews with spalling metal from the interior of their tanks.
@John Cornell True. But German tanks had to remain motionless to shoot as well. By the time this vehicle came out, the Germans were fighting defensively, so their tanks usually were used as static gun platforms, and seldom did motion advances towards Russian forces.
That one tank destroyer you don't want to get in front of his aiming reticle...
You could snipe the gunner through that barrel. I have heard stories of Panthers being hit by this gun from close and being blown back quite a distance

The overall design and features of the 152 appear more refine and thought out than many Russian tanks.

It allows you to unditch, if you've center-highed or just sunk so deep into mud that you've lost traction. Chain the log to the two track cross-wise, and you get a good grip.
